From June: 'No ice at the North Pole,' to January: 'Sea Ice Ends Year at Same Level as 1979'
No pairing of any two stories better illustrates the child-like alarmism of global warming religionists than these two stories. The first from June of 2008 claims that all the ice at the North Pole has melted and will be gone for the first time ever, while the second shows that by January of 2009 the polar ice measurements show that it is the same as it was in 1979, with no ice loss seen at all between then and now.
The first story was published by the Independent newspaper in England. Written by their "science editor," Steve Connor, this piece was replete with dire warnings and shocked proclamations of how it all seemed "unthinkable" that all the ice at the North Pole was melted because of globaloney.
It seems unthinkable, but for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.
The disappearance of the Arctic sea ice, making it possible to reach the Pole sailing in a boat through open water, would be one of the most dramatic – and worrying – examples of the impact of global warming on the planet. Scientists say the ice at 90 degrees north may well have melted away by the summer.
Yes, it's the end of civilization as we know it. We're all doomed. Erect the tombstone over planet earth now.
Yet, by January of 2009, another story came out that proved that sea ice at the poles are exactly the same now than it was when scientists first began to measure it starting in 1979. In other words, no loss at all.
Thanks to a rapid rebound in recent months, global sea ice levels now equal those seen 29 years ago, when the year 1979 also drew to a close.
Ice levels had been tracking lower throughout much of 2008, but rapidly recovered in the last quarter. In fact, the rate of increase from September onward is the fastest rate of change on record, either upwards or downwards.
If you'll excuse the pun, these two stories are polar opposites.
In the first story, we see "scientists" wringing hands and worrying.
The polar regions are experiencing the most dramatic increase in average temperatures due to global warming and scientists fear that as more sea ice is lost, the darker, open ocean will absorb more heat and raise local temperatures even further. Professor Peter Wadhams of Cambridge University, who was one of the first civilian scientists to sail underneath the Arctic sea ice in a Royal Navy submarine, said that the conditions are ripe for an unprecedented melting of the ice at the North Pole.
But the second story explains just how wrong they were.
Why were predictions so wrong? Researchers had expected the newer sea ice, which is thinner, to be less resilient and melt easier. Instead, the thinner ice had less snow cover to insulate it from the bitterly cold air, and therefore grew much faster than expected, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center.
So, what we see here in the first story is "scientists" that imagine that they "know" that everything will travel in a straight line from their claims to the end of life as we know it. They make no allowance for the reality that, like it has for millions of years, this planet might just know what it’s doing after all! And we find them shocked and surprised by the time the second story rolls around that they couldn't have been more wrong.
Could anyone find two better stories to reveal the farce that is the religion of the globaloney crowd?

When did history begin?
January 1, 2009 - 22:59 ET by ThisnThatThe heck with the comparisons. The real question is: When does History begin? In 1979? The Summer of '08? Or does it begin now, January 2009?
The Alarmists need a way out, so look for History to have begun at 5 minutes past midnight, 1 January, 2009. If that's the case (and Libs get to define this, BTW, since the MSM won't report otherwise), then the short report is as follows:
"Never before has polar ice been so thin. Recent measurements show that that the ice thinness (750 meters) is unique in the world's history (since measurements began). We don't know what's going to happen next, but the situation is dire. Stop all cars. Ground all planes. And we are going to ask The One to put the nation on alternative (even/odd) breathing days. If you need to take breaths on your restricted day, you will be charged a Carbon Tax until we get this situation back under control".

What is Obama's plan to combat global cooling?
January 1, 2009 - 23:40 ET by riff_raffNow that we have irrefutable scientific proof that earth's climate is steadily growing colder, as an activist I demand to know just what is the messiah's plan to combat global cooling? One would have to assume that a 1degC drop in global temperatures would be just as devastating.

They call themselves scientists?
January 2, 2009 - 00:12 ET by pbthinker"the thinner ice had less snow cover to insulate it from the bitterly cold air, and therefore grew much faster than expected"
Anyone, not even a scientist, knows that, during the Winters up North, if you have a cold Winter, with little snow, frost lines goes deeper. Originally being from Massachusetts, I can remember a Winter there just like that, where waterlines, coming in from the street, were freezing in some neighborhoods because the frost-line had gone below 6 Feet, the normal depth of the lines coming in. Just for the sake of conversation, waterlines in Alaska come in at 30 feet.
The problem we have is these "scientists" the press goes out to find, aren't climate scientists, for the most part, so they have little understanding of how this all works. Snow is an insulator.
Election 2008-God's way of showing us that elections count.
Right you are. Where
January 2, 2009 - 00:50 ET by MidAmericaRight you are. Where I'm at in the Midwest the temperature can fluctuate quite a bit. When there is no snow and it drops to -20 the ground will freeze very deep but if there is a deep snow on top the ground is actually thawing out.
It just goes to show you AGW has nothing to do with science.
January 3, 2009 - 01:49 ET by JWFInsulation is all about trapping air which is a very poor conductor of heat. Snow traps air and acts as an insulator.
Ask any farmer in the midwest. They like snow covered cropland. It prevents the ground from getting too cold too deep and delaying spring planting.
This is known science. The wind is what carries away heat. It strips away the insulating layer of air around an object. It is why man has built shelters and started wearing animal fur that changed to become the clothes we wear.

January 2, 2009 - 03:15 ET by NorthCoasterClimate Crisis has been the description used recently to make allowances for the lack of warming since 1998. This allows the enviro-hysterics the opportunity to claim that natural changes in weather and climate are caused by CO2 emmissions. Most scientists have been using the term Climate Change to reflect the effects of natural cycles for years.
