The co-chair of Barack Obama's Transition Team, Valerie Jarrett, appeared on Meet the Press this weekend and used, shall we say, an interesting word to described what she thinks Barack Obama will be doing in January when he's officially sworn into office. She told Tom Brokaw that Obama will be ready to "rule" on day one. It's a word that reflects the worst fears that people have for Obama the "arrogant," the "messiah," that imagines he's here to "rule" instead of govern.
Jarret told Brokaw that "given the daunting challenges that we face, it's important that president elect Obama is prepared to really take power and begin to rule day one."
Someone needs to get to Jarrett and inform her that American politicians are not Kings and do not "rule" from office. But if this is the attitude of Obama's transition team, what does The One himself imagine he is about to unleash? Could the fears that Obama thinks he is being anointed America's King be far off with this sort of talk flying about?

But knowing the unpopularity of the President, they could have figured, "hey well let's give him his turn so he can shut up and never run again". Then he picked someone who wasn't already running for 2012 as his VP pick so that when he lost people like Romney, Pawlenty etc wouldn't have been harmed by being the VP pick of a failing campaign.
Trivia: Who was the last failed VP pick that wasn't on an incumbant's ticket to become a nominee later in life?

They may not get all that they expected, but the ones who voted to keep him out of office are the real targets and will be the ones who really will get screwed. After all, if you were so naive or so nasty as to vote for Obama in the first place, you are probably not much of a producer with something worth taking.
It is clear he was elected because of the color of his skin rather than the content of his character, which can't be a good thing. His plans and policies are so ugly and dangerous, but his worshippers are blind to the harm he presents to us and our country.

November 10, 2008 - 11:57 ET by moderncommentaries83I agree, ShanghaiRay. Those who voted for Obama are in for a rude awakening when gas is $10/gallon, or it costs $1,000/month to heat and power their homes.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if they tried to overturn the 2-term limits and create a "crisis" to justify making Obama ruler for life.
Then, of course, there's always the threat of terrorism. The Code Pink, "no war for any reason" crowd will fully expect Obama to give the terrorists warm fuzzies and bring about world peace. Which, of course, won't happen. I can't say I won't be satisfied to see the liberally-biased media, and the liberals who supported Obama, get theirs when all their pet causes are verboten under shari'a law.
My sympathies lie with the 56 million people who didn't vote for Obama, for the business owners and employees who will be taxed out of work, for the families who will have to choose between heating their homes or eating, for the unborn and just born who will die at the hands of abortionists and for the women who have abortions whose pain and suffering will be shoved aside as "distraction", for lovers of free speech and free religious expression who will find themselves persecuted and prosecuted, and for future generations that will have to bear out the brunt of Obama's "hope" and "change" policies.

November 10, 2008 - 07:24 ET by AgnosticThe article? Annoymous sources that can't confirm anything from a paper most people on this site wouldn't put in their birdcage is not going to do well for your argument but it is interesting that these types of missions were being called for by many liberals and Democrats as a counter to Bush's policy of going into Afghanistan and Iraq. However the article was interesting; thanks, I'll look later to see if someone can actually give some details.
President-Elect Obama is not a racist socialist who hates America. President-Elect Obama has used racism as leverage in his campaign and stood on the shoulders of true racist to acheive office. President-Elect Obama has extremely socialistic ideas but they are nothing that hasn't been floating around Washington since the 1930's. President-Elect Obama does not hate America but does tend to see America (judging from his rhetoric) as completely wrong and the leading cause of problems in the world that can only be healed through his leadership.
I agree we need to be critical of what President-Elect Obama does and says not what we think he is going to do because of his campaign promises. Afterall, like campaign reform and bipartisanship, we know his campaign rhetoric really means nothing at all.
Exactly, at least for the last bit
November 10, 2008 - 08:07 ET by Josh SNYour criticisms of what Obama actually does, and the results of those actions, will be a lot more credible if you haven't been decrying him as a racist, or "leveraging racism" or "standing on the shoulders of racists."
Come on, the Southern Republicans were born in white racism and opposition to people like Obama being allowed to sit at the same lunch counter. There were no Southern Republican Senators before 1964. Was there one? I forget. So, since some of those guys are still in office (Jefferson Beureugard Sessions called a white civil rights lawyer a "traitor to his race" and said he thought the Klan were a nice bunch of guys, until he found out they smoked dope, and he regularly gets elected Senator from Alabama)
You know which two parts of Civil Rights George Herbert Walker Bush had the biggest problems with? Public Accomodation and the EEOC. George Herbert Walker Bush very specifically wanted to make sure people like Obama couldn't sit at the same lunch counter as him.

But those are things he has done. They don't make him a racist but they do show that he will use race and the leaders of racial politics as a tool towards his own goals. So far that just makes him a politician with great morals but nothing new in the world.
Their are areas of racism all around this country and it is displayed by almost every single race representative in the country. And I'm talking 2008 not 1965 so it is a little more relevant to the conversation concerning Obama unless you mean to say the Alinsky like idealogy of victimhood is out of the 60's then I would have to agree.
Still I will offer my best wishes to our President-Elect and will support his endeavors for our nation. Hopefully I never have reason to regret these feelings of obligation but since I've been complaining all through Bush's term about the government I do feel some sort of freedom to complain should Obama continue making the same mistakes or come up with new ways to create problems.
Hate to break it to you..
November 10, 2008 - 10:10 ET by bertkillianHate to tell you, but the party of black oppression has always been the Democratic Party. Kind of ironic isn't it? It was the Southern Democrat that was the faction of the Democratic Party that was pro-segregation (i.e., "Dixiecrat"). Some of those guys transitioned out of the Democratic Party when it became clear that it was becoming a haven for liberalism; which those congressmen and senators did not like either.
The Republican Party has been the party of Emancipation, the Party of Lincoln. GHW Bush probably did not "make sure people like Obama couldn't sit at the same lunch counter as him."; that would be Democrats' Helms, Wallace, Stennis, Thurmond and their ilk.

November 10, 2008 - 12:42 ET by R D HelmUp until very recently, southern politics have been run by democrats, not republicans.
Almost all of the laws that once existed in this region that robbed black Americans of their rights were proposed by, voted for, and signed into law by democrats.
Had it not been for the votes of republicans, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 would have never passed.

November 10, 2008 - 08:18 ET by BDJoshSN:
We gave them a trial via military commission which is completely different than a civilin court.
I will be interested to see if Obama follows suit now that the incoming Obama administration has indicated that they will close our detainee holding facility at Guantanamo Bay. But knowing he is a shyster by trade (And one who never actually practiced) I would say that he thinks a civilian court will work just fine.
I will giggle and laugh as the civilian prosecuters attempt to find any sort of "Crime" that the enemy combatants committed that can be prosecuted in a civilian court. After all, attempting to shoot a US Soldier in Aghanistan during a firefight is not exactly prosecutable in New York is it? Nor is carrying a load of B-40 rockets from a cache to a firing position several miles away when they are captured.
What is more likely to happen? A US criminal court will seek sanctions on the US military for staging the ambush that killed three and captured the defendant without attempting to perform the necessary "knock Warning" that US police face when they attempt an arrest. Oh, and do not forget the necessary Miranda Warning that we needed to perform on the Abu The Most Merciful after we captured him.
THen I will chortle as the US is brought up on charges in the world court for violating the Geneva convention by TRYING a military detainee in a civilian court.
Then, my mirth will turn to sadness as the detainees who will be ordered released by said civilian courts and likely paid reparations for our capturing him in the first place then begin a bombing spree in Bali Indonesia, Manila in the Philippines, and downtown London.

Check your attitude
November 10, 2008 - 07:40 ET by islero47So we're to pray that thieves repent, but not politicians? The two seem to overlap quite a bit. If you're going to pray that Obama chokes on a sandwich, why not pray for other evildoers to choke on sandwiches?
It's attitudes like yours that give Christians a bad name. Praying for the death of your enemies falls in line with Islamojihadists and liberals. Jesus meant something else when he said, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."
"If it weren't for Christians, there'd be more of 'em."
I don't know who first said it, but I love that quote. Having worked in a church, it's depressingly accurate.
Until you can cite the verse where Jesus says, "Ask the Lord to smite your enemies with their own dinners, and you shall receive," I'll hold to the assertion that your attitude is out of line with Biblical principles.
Oh, and if you think I'm a hypocrite for including a link to a piece about Obama's narcissism in my signature, remember that Jesus called out societal leaders for what they were. Now that you know Obama has a disorder, you can specifically pray that God heals him of NPD.

November 10, 2008 - 09:58 ET by MrDebaterthe people of Venezuela thought they had elected a leader who would "govern"....and look what they ended up with...I wonder if Chavez uses ACORN during his elections as well...hmmmm....seems like he can't lose....and now he has taken over the gold mine, owned by Canada...I wonder how happy Canada is with Chavez....maybe Barack will give him a congratulatory call.
No Acorn

Why would you assume that because some of us here are not in Obama's court that we would then have to be in President Bush's?

All Communist dictators
November 10, 2008 - 10:02 ET by nadadhimmiAll Communist dictators RULE. American Presidents GOVERN . I'm not a SUBJECT to be RULED. I'm an American citizen, and there are millions like me that are armed and will not suffer subjection to the ilk of Bill Ayers, "The Messiah and giver of all light" and his communist minions. If defending the Constitution means bloodshed, well, the tree of liberty must be watered from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. SUBJECTS do not have the 2nd Amendment.
Their true colors are showing!
November 10, 2008 - 10:04 ET by northoneTeam Obama's true colors always show when they are not tightly scripted. Jarrett's comment is clear indication of their attitude. They plan to "rule"; not "lead"; not "inspire". It is going to be so sweet when the Obama-bubble bursts and all those kool-aid drinkers who voted for him and danced and sang come to realize what they have wrought.
King George III
November 10, 2008 - 11:03 ET by NorthCoasterOur last "Ruler" was King George III and the 13 Colonies fought a Revolution to throw him off.
Ready to Rule?
November 10, 2008 - 11:28 ET by TN MomHeck, I'm still questioning whether obama is ready to rule, er, lead:
On his 1st press conference he snubbed Fox News - a major US News Corp- yet he wants to sit down (unconditionaly) with leaders of countries who wish us harm...

Rule ??
November 10, 2008 - 11:40 ET by 10ksnookerIs what you do in Kenya or the junta of Indonesia. It's what Muslims do, have rulers, who double as tyrannical dictators.
I'm sure it's just a slip of the tongure by naive "dear leader"
A little history for naive Constitutional scholar The One -- America has no ruler(s), the people are the sovereigns. America has a written Constitution and has a representative government. I am sure "dear leader", being a Constitutional scholar and all, knows that -- Right?
Reject Obamunism.
Obamunism and you
November 10, 2008 - 11:43 ET by Sergeant ROCKYou better get your mind right and embrace Obamunism! The Constitution won't be around forever.

Ready to Rule video
November 10, 2008 - 12:44 ET by totsotvaitnThe truth is that the majority of American voters have spoken. Period.
Four years from now we will have an opportunity to vote again. It is up to Barack Obama to show the American people as to whether he is a good or bad President.
The American voter did not choose Barack Obama to become a messiah, a king, a dictator or a ruler. He was elected as President of the United States. We can speculate all we want but only time will reveal what type of leader we have chosen to occupy the highest office in The United States of America.
Ready to Rule?
November 10, 2008 - 13:00 ET by FormerMarineOfficerTime out coach. Is there a corontion in the offing on 1/20/09?
Are you kidding? We haven't even been presented incontrovertible evidence that Mr. Obama is in fact a natural born citizen. http://www.obamacrimes.org
Ready to rule, hardly, at most govern would be the operative term. As I recall Benjamin Franklin's response to Mrs. Powel's question was, "A Republic if you can keep it". That would be the intent, a Constitution having been framed and adopted.
Semper Fidelis and Happy Birthday Marines, our 233 year of tradition unmarred by progress.
Our sister service the Army also has an especially prescient motto, "This We'll Defend".
November 10, 2008 - 13:59 ET by SentryDan45 years ago this past June, I swore to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and to bear true alligence to the same. I will still honor that oath. We who served in the United States Armed Forces need to remember that.
Which is more important following a person who has only his own interests at heart or keeping this great country free for our children and grandchildren. Our government's prime directive is to protect/defend the citizens. It is not to take care of the citizen from cradle to grave, contrary to what many believe.
It you want to be a citizen of this country then be part of the solution and not part of the problem. Stop demanding "what can my country do for me."
Remember, "Freedom isn't Free. It was bought and paid for with the blood and sacrifice of the men and women who served and are serving in the United States Armed Forces."
Remember folks, it's hard to soar with eagles when you are surrounded by a flock of turkeys.

A million violent felons are rotting in prisons. We would be more efficient if we followed the example of the French and gave all those convicted of violent crimes a chance to serve their country. As an alternative to prison most will happily join death brigades and be airlifted to Afghanistan. With grenade launchers in hand hunting down Osama Ben Laden and killing him will be easy. If successful the hero's would be brought back to America and given a full pardon.
It it mighty generous of Him
November 10, 2008 - 17:05 ET by AbuNudnikIt is generous of Him to allow President Bush to remain President until the date set forth in the constitution for the President-elect to be sworn in, to "take power and rule." It's a good sign. He is prepared to follow the constitution until the day he "take[s] power and rules."

Just watching Obama walk makes me ill. He walks around bouncing around like a NY crack whore pimp. He just needs the wild hat with the feather in it.
And keep Bill Ayers, Rev Wright & Oprah out of the Lincoln bedroom!

November 11, 2008 - 09:58 ET by RobertG_Arizonathat someone told her she was important. Why oh why do they lie to these people, poor dear. Yes Dear Leader BroBama thinks he gets to RULE and with Pelosi, Dingy Harry and the Obaminites in Congress he will try.
We just might resist-and no it is NOT futile. Jeremiah Wright may have told Dear Leader BroBama he is the messiah, but he was wrong. Lock and Load anyone?
When Craig Ferguson was
November 11, 2008 - 11:06 ET by GrannyGrump42When Craig Ferguson was waiting for his US citizenship, he showed us his British passport -- something he couldn't wait to get rid of. And why? Because it said he was a "subject". And he wanted to be not a subject but a citizen.
It's tragic that this man, who only just got his passport changed to a US passport recognizing him a citizen, not a subject, should see the first election in which he was qualified to vote go to a man who evidently intends to turn Craig Ferguson back into the subject of a ruler.

Proof in the Pudding: Day 1
January 12, 2009 - 13:43 ET by pbr90Hillary, in accepting a post as Sec of State, will not say it, but women of America should - in that Obama claimed he would be ready day 1 to be effective in the White House.
He now has a chance to prove that promise, given the nature of current events, including the awful bail out mess, where no one knows where the money is.
American women are not anticipating the hemming and hawing that underpins most traditional elections - because of that very issue in the debate during the election.
If integrity and credibility is what he seeks, and campaign promises were not empty promises, the administration with its current cabinet will be under considerable pressure to prove its point - inaugural ball or no inaugural ball. The ball is in his court, as it should be.
