Students that belong to a pro-life campus group called Cornell Coalition for Life (CCFL) spent weeks and hundreds of dollars organizing a pro-life display to be featured on the Cornell University Engineering Campus in Ithaca, New York. This was no guerilla campaign, either, because the CCFL applied for and received permission for its display. Yet, scarcely an hour had passed before an associate dean for the university summarily decided on her own to support the removal of the display by an administrative assistant despite that the display was approved by the college. This incident happened on October 22, yet the media has completely ignored this troubling story.
The CCFL had erected its "Elena Campaign" signs in the Engineering Quad to raise awareness among students of the earlier stages of fetal development, stages when many falsely imagine that a fetus is just a "lump of cells." As the CCFL says, its "Elena Campaign" is "a series of light-hearted educational signs with pictures and text detailing the biological development of an unborn child."
The CCFL reports that regardless of approval, the dean and her assistant removed the display.
Less than one hour after the Cornell Coalition for Life (CCFL) set up their “Elena Campaign” signs in the Engineering Quad, the signs were abruptly removed by Dawn Warren, an administrative assistant, and taken to the Facilities Office of the College of Engineering. The “Elena Campaign” is a series of light-hearted educational signs with pictures and text detailing the biological development of an unborn child. Though CCFL had gone through the proper administrative avenues to get approval for the display, Warren removed the signs without permission because she did not personally approve of the content.
After this administrative assistant illicitly removed the signs, an assistant dean of the school helped her suppress the student's rights further.
Together, Dawn Warren and Cathy Dove, Associate Dean for Administration in the College of Engineering, attempted to prevent members of CCFL from retrieving the signs. Only when the Cornell Police were brought in did Warren and Dove relinquish the property. Even then, Dove tried to intimidate the students and requested that the signs not be put up again, referencing an “unwritten policy” among the College of Engineering to prevent “opinionated displays.”
Fortunately, the campus police were able to prevail upon the dean and her assistant to relinquish the signs for the approved display to resume.
The illicitly removed signs sat in the dean's area as the police attempted to resolve the dispute.
On the website of the free speech campus watchdog group FIRE, Adam Kissel has more on this story. According to Kissel, the dean claimed that the CCFL folks were violating an "unwritten" rule that such displays were not allowed.
The students tried to retrieve their signs from Dawn Warren and Cathy Dove, Associate Dean for Administration in the College of Engineering, but Dove reportedly said that the College of Engineering had an "unwritten policy" that prevented "opinionated displays" on the quad. Dove also reportedly said that Cornell was becoming increasingly concerned about not having its green spaces "cluttered."
In a further effort to suppress free expression, Dove also threatened that she would take up the "unwritten rule" with Cornell administrators to try to get it made official.
This is yet one more example, ruefully noted, of the oppressive tendency to quash free speech that is occurring on our university and college campuses all across the country. Now, if this had been a pro-abortion group that had its freedom of speech stamped upon by college administrators, who can doubt that the media would have made the matter front page news? Yet, since it was a pro-life group that was oppressed, we've heard not a peep about this story in the media.
Sad, but not unexpected.

All I can say is we all need to keep the faith. Setting the narrative is one of the most important things we can do in the arena of public debate. If all we do is simply react, we can't win the debate. That's why when I write, I analyze what I am critiquing as much as possible. If we can keep the debate on our terms getting out our ideas then we win half the battle for the minds of the public.
Oh, and keep your integrity. If the other side does something right, say so freely. But, don't be obsequious about it.
Lastly, read... A LOT!

October 25, 2008 - 06:29 ET by motherbeltThank heaven for FIRE! They are marvelous in their support of students whose rights are violated routinely on college campuses.
The excuse usually used by campus officials to "justify" removing displays is that they may "incite a disturbance." Translation: people here don't like opposing viewpoints, so you're just getting them riled up; can't have that!

Nice of them to provide us with their names and schools. It has not updated since it became public though - I bet there are probably 5x that many who didn't have the chance to give us their names.
What's truly scary is that they appear to have NO clue what McCarthyism was. They toss the term around, I guess with some knowledge that it was a bad thing and had something to do with punishing commies - but they have no real historical understanding.
And these are the people responsible for educating our kids? Scary.

October 25, 2008 - 06:29 ET by R D HelmSeriously, our nation's universities are run by left-wing, freedom-hating Speech Nazis. Just because someone sets foot on a college campus does not mean they check their First Amendment rights at the gate.
The administrative assistant who removed those signs should be fired forthwith, if not sooner.
I have been reading the F.I.R.E. site since it started. If I had a kid in college today, I would probably have an attorney on retainer for the duration of their collegiate career.
What truly makes my blood boil is that so many weak-kneed college students today merely knuckle under to such nonsense. If it were me, I'd be in these administrator's faces from the moment they confronted me.

October 25, 2008 - 06:44 ET by Warner Todd HustonIt is because they are rarely taught the ethical consideration of "there but for the grace of God, go I."
In other words, since the large portion of loud, activist kids on college campuses are left-wingers, they don't see anything wrong with oppressing the free speech of conservatives because, after all, THEIR cause wins if the right gets oppressed. They have NO problem at all with participating in the destruction of free speech if it doesn't mess up their side.
They don't for a second imagine that quashing others' free speech is quashing everyone's. It is situational ethics that our colleges specialize in. Anything to win, no matter the costs.

October 25, 2008 - 06:51 ET by motherbeltMorning, Warner.
Unfortunately the left-wing propaganda machine is working. I read somewhere last year that a survey showed that almose half of those asked thought there should be limits on speech that might offend someone. The operative word there is "might." And they said yeah, that was a good thing!
My daughter will start attending a public college here in PA come January. She is well, let's say she is very much pro-life, and not an Obama supporter, and a bit of a big mouth, like her mother LOL!
Gonna be interesting. Maybe I should take Dave's advice and keep a lawyer on retainer!
Congrats MB! My daughter
October 25, 2008 - 08:26 ET by MazziCongrats MB!
My daughter is in her freshman year at a liberal arts college. Interestingly though, there is (so far) no sign of serious political strife. Of course almost every one of her classmates is prObama, but she just listens to them and doesn't say much. Then she comes home and asks me why people are so dense.
She has already learned that you can't try to take on a pack of liberals - but, when you talk to them one-on-one, some of them are smart enough to "get it" - at least enough to think about it, and not just parrot the propaganda they have been fed from all sides.

October 25, 2008 - 09:42 ET by sherylsimsWhen my kids were younger I had several friends with children the same ages and we would have regular discussions about their educations. I believed that the schools did a disservice to Christian kids, and even sounded a little crazy when I would tell my friends that the schools were just indoctrination centers set up to produce "worker bees" who weren't able to think differently from the rest of the hive. (As a former teacher I have an interest in this area of society, I now homeschool my children)
My friends' saved their money and put it away for their childrens college education and were so proud to send them off to college when the day came.
EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM has been heartbroken and disappointed at the outcome in that their children are like strangers to them as far as the values they had been taught and modeled in the home as they were growing up. One's son is a liberal journailst who thinks his parents (and George Bush of course) are fools and can't even stand to be in the same room with them, another lovely young girl who was at one time interested in being a missionary is now very anti-God and pro abortion, her brother is into drugs and everything else, and yet another is now a very militant homosexual who is so full of anger and hate that he is unrecognizeable as the sweet young man we used to drive to church activities.
There are just so many options for young people in this generation besides college and each family needs to look at the reality of how much potential good vs. how much crap they will have to sift through to find the good and truthful parts of a college education.
I am not trying to say that you should re-think her college plans, I am just saying, she will need as much prayer and encouragement as you can give her from whatever distance you will be. I will keep her in my prayers too. (And if she is like you, well, maybe the college better look out for a big dose of truth to be walking onto their campus!)

October 25, 2008 - 08:15 ET by R D HelmIt is even more infuriating when you take into account that we hapless taxpayers are being forced to fund much of this nonsense.
It appears the left has maneuvered us into funding our own destruction. If we lose the right to express ourselves freely no-matter-what, this nation will not survive in its present form.

...Far greater is the problem presented by the generally hostile environment a conservative normally encounters on any campus. This includes destruction of flyers advertising one’s event, failure of the campus newspaper to publicize it and failure of professors to recommend or even require student attendance as they regularly do for radical speakers. Equally troublesome for a visiting conservative is the pervasive leftist mindset of a community that is constantly brow-beaten by leftist propaganda and is the subject of relentless intimidation by leftist bigots who will call anyone who disagrees with them a racist or a sexist or an Islamophobe at the drop of a hat....

Ster,
October 25, 2008 - 08:12 ET by R D HelmI have followed Mr. Horowitz's career for some time now.
I think what happened to him at Brown was criminal, as I do every time I read about how non-liberal speakers are treated at our nation's universities.
Back when the republican party controlled congress, I wrote several letters to my congress-critters suggesting that public funding for any tax-payer supported institution that engages in the stifling of contrary viewpoints be halted.
Sadly, just like funding PBS, the republicans didn't seem interested in correcting this lunacy.
I fear we are going to pay dearly for allowing the left unfettered control of our nation's universities in the not-too-distant future.
In fact, given the inexplicable support for the manufactured-fraud that is Barack Hussein Obama in the upcoming election, some would say we are screwed already.
