The campaign handlers for Barack Obama have obviously decided that there will be no more failed jokes ala Kerry's "stupid kids get stuck in Iraq" faux pas of the 2006 campaign. Barack apparently blew his chance for ostensible extemporaneous elocution after his failed "lip stick on a pig" joke went over like a lead balloon last week. According to CNN, Obama is suddenly speaking from a teleprompter at outdoor campaign rallies.
One can just imagine how McCain would be eviscerated by the press if he had to start using a teleprompter at the average campaign stop. What sort of "senility" jokes would the press be filled with at that point? One can just guess that this news will be greeted with a yawn even though it seems to be a pretty strong curtailment of Obama's freedom to speak extemporaneously on the stump.
Certainly it is nothing odd to see a candidate of any stripe delivering a set piece speech from the device, but to have one at outdoor rallies and average campaign stops, well, that is quite unusual.
But the Illinois senator used a teleprompter at both his Colorado events Monday -- making for a particularly peculiar scene in Pueblo, where the prompter was set up in the middle of what is normally a rodeo ring.
Obviously Obama's famous stammer, his uncontrollable ums and ahs on top of his inauspicious "lip stick on a pig" comment has caused the campaign to reign in their inarticulate (once on his own and off the prompter) candidate.
I wonder if the media, though, will see this as the curb on Obama that it truly is? And placed there by his own campaign bosses, at that. This seems a pretty loud statement that his own people cannot trust him.
What do you folks think? Am I making too much of this?

September 16, 2008 - 17:01 ET by Ten7sYou're definitely not making too big a deal here. Conservatives should go to every Obama rally and aggressively draw attention to the fact that now Obama's ALWAYS using a teleprompter. Also everyone should encourage him to do Town Hall meetings w/ McCain, that would really be a hoot.

September 16, 2008 - 08:29 ET by Susan IYou are not making too much out of this, because the MSM won't making ANYTHING out of this. Obama will get a pass as usual.
He is running scared now, and somehow, someway, someone got to him and made him realize that he can't talk without a teleprompter. He's a baffoon without one!

September 16, 2008 - 08:39 ET by Copperhead RidgeBecause Democrats have to be so worried about expressing their true beliefs on the campaign trail their handlers take over the campaigns. They worry over every word because they walk a fine line between their base and the rest of the voting public they have to measure every idea. They have to campaign as one thing so they can lead as another. Candidates have to say just the right thing so they don't have to eat their hyprocritcal statements if they win the office.
That's why in the general election their candidates move and talk like robots, especially leftists like Gore and Kerry.
If they campaigned on what they truly believe, they'd get clobbered. Obama was dynamite when he was trying to excite the base of the party, but as soon as he started shifting to the middle he lost steam. He started losing steam in Europe (the entire trip is one of the biggest gaffes in American political history) when he knew he had to start gaining the votes of another spectrum of voters. He was stupid for going to Europe. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
If he followed his defeat of Clinton with a barnstorming tour of the United States telling everyone how much he loved his country and how proud he would be to President of the United States, he'd be up by 15 points in the polls. Instead, he trapsed off to Europe to proclaim that he's a citizen of the world. Stupid! He's not fit to be president.
He's the High Priest of Mumbo Jumbo, A total and complete flake.

September 16, 2008 - 08:42 ET by ReconRngrI am glad someone is bringing this up.
It has always been my contention that Barry would not do townhall meetings because he would fail miserably without his teleprompter.
Plus, remember how the clintons would determine what questions were asked and then they had a few days to prep their answer (a Dem favorite)...of course they did not need a teleprompter.
Without these favorite Dem tools, Obama most definitely would flounder.
He is not a man of his convictions and is being decieptful - thus, the stammering and flying away from questions straight back to his talking points.

Obama is TOAST at the debates
September 16, 2008 - 08:42 ET by ChrisMillsI don't think the MSM moderators at the debates will be able to do anything for Obama. If he can't even get through a stump speech in front of ardent supporters off the cuff, then how in the world will he get past McCain in the debates?
We should be glad to see McCain and Palin in the polls lead. If they're winning now, just wait until Obama trips over his words at debates where a teleprompter is not allowed.

I would love to see a picture of the teleprompter at the rally. I'm sure it's a very odd scene. No wonder he doesn't want to do a townhall style debate with McCain.

No! you are not making too big a deal of this
September 16, 2008 - 09:30 ET by Dee BunkIt needs to be made an even bigger deal.
The media have tried to paint Sarah Palin using "the same speech" over and over even though that is what all candidates do. That's why they call it a "stump speech" ABC even did a montage of her repeating a line before Gibson's interview. Then yesterday and today I've heard various shows report on how she's "tightly controlled" even though she's out on her own. I can't remember which show I saw it on, but they made a big deal about her being controlled and said that people weren't even allowed to bring in their own home made signs and were given pre-made ones. What a shocker! That's never happened at an Obama rally - yeah right.
Palin is the VP and the media are focused on attacking her for things that the less experienced Obama is even weaker on and he's the Presidential candidate! He's repeated phrases, he's been "tightly controlled", and he needs a teleprompter. Sarah has proven that she can go without a teleprompter (as she did at the convention) and she's proven that she can handle the kind of tough questions that Obama rarely gets. The very few times Obama has had tough questions (Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday and Gibson/Stepho in the debate with Hillary) he's extremely bad. He hims and haws and obfuscates. Sarah's supposedly bad moment on the Gibson's phony "Bush Doctrine" question, was much better and stronger than Obama has ever been.
I say this teleprompter is a HUGE deal, especially in light of how they have been portraying Governor Palin. Everything they criticize her for, Obama is ten times worse whether it's on speaking or experience, or exaggerations.
Sure is

Here's something
September 16, 2008 - 10:51 ET by Insane ChipmunkHere's something I've noticed - like George W. Bush - over time Obama has come across as a bit less articulate and dare I say dumber. The gaffes are piling on, the uhs ums and other pauses are increasing.
It's been postulated that President Bush's decline in speaking on the stump ability over the years is a long-term affect of drug and alcohol use. A perfect catalyst would be stress - and running for/being President are two of the most stressful things I can think of.
And as a recovering alcoholic I can say that every now and then I just blank out on something I normally would never have. Last night for example it took me about 5 minutes to remember the word "compromise" was the word I wanted to use to mean ...well..a compromise.
For President Bush the long-term results has seem to impair his speech and his wordisms. For the Senator it's apparently been his math and geography.
Is the campaign catalysing the Senator's dormant results of his own drug use? Is he going to only get worse?
Dear Insane...
September 16, 2008 - 11:21 ET by Secret ConservativeI don't think GW or Barack are having drug or alcohol- related lapses, I think they are both nervous in front of the cameras. Most people are. And I think GW has a bigger problem because he knows that the media are out to get him, so no matter what he says, it will be taken the wrong way. I've thought for a long time that this is why Bush doesn't have more press conferences. If you get beat up every time you speak to a particular group of people, the normal human response would be to stop speaking to those people.
People who have met GW say that in private he is very bright and articulate and genuine. People who have met Obama say that in private he is an arrogant snob.
Clearly, the media have misoverestimated Barack Obama and it is coming back to bite him in the butt.
I see Barack as a ship
September 16, 2008 - 20:39 ET by celatorI see Barack as a ship without a keel--the deep-seated principles that should guide him, and stabilize him, as he sails through the hurricane called a political campaign. September 16, 2008 - 10:22 ET by BobMcCartyWritesObama's using the teleprompter because of the largely-unreported gaffe he made during his speech in Grand Junction. September 16, 2008 - 11:57 ET by Copperhead RidgeLet's face it George W. Bush mangles the English language. There's two things about that, though. First, President Bush has never portrayed himself as a great orator. Secondly, Bush has never said that he'd meet dictators from the Middle East and South America unconditionally.
My blood runs cold thinking about this stammering greenhorn negotiating with Hugo Chavez and Mahmoud Ahmadinijad without conditions. He's arrogant enough to try it, too.
My liberal friends love to wax in teary eyed fashion about what a great orator Barak Obama is. I contend that he's good at reading or presenting a speech, but he is not an orator. A true orator -- be he a backwoods stump speaker or a statesman -- can speak coherently without a teleprompter.

Obama wasn't the only one reigned in. His campaign kept the media corralled and didn't let them speak to anyone in the crowd. They had to stalk the porta-potty lines to get comments. (per the Rocky Mountain News, not online)

September 16, 2008 - 15:28 ET by 50mpgThe more dependence on the prompter the better for McCain. Obama already refuses any townhall meetings with McCain for precisely the reason he's now using the prompter.

When I was in my twenties, I was sharp as a tack and could pull obscure words out of the air and string together the most wonderful sentences. Now that I'm 43, I sometimes have to sit and think of an everyday noun to add to my sentence. I won't even play Trivial Pursuit because it's too depressing. I will immediately have the anwer in my head, but can't think of the word or name.
I think a lot of the pauses and "uhms" that Bush and Obama use are just that, getting older. Maybe McCain is an exception because he seems to speak just fine. In most instances he appears sharper than the younger Obama.
