Did ABC use particular camera tricks to make Governor Palin look small and powerless in their Charlie Gibson interview? I've been pointed to a blog that makes a compelling case that they did just that. Using still shots of the Gibson interview with Palin compared to similar Gibson interviews with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, it seems this blogger has proven it to be an open and shut case of manipulation of the viewer. The writer shows how ABC used special camera placements and lenses to make Governor Palin seem small and Charlie Gibson seem overpowering and large by comparison.
By now, just about everyone is aware of Hollywood's special effects and camera techniques. There have been so many TV shows explaining them, so many DVD extras laying out the techniques that most Americans are at least a little familiar with the effects and techniques that filmmakers use to heighten and enhance their work. The anonymous blogger is familiar with these special effects, claims to work in the business in Hollywood himself, and does a great job explaining and pointing out where such effects were used to belittle Governor Palin.
Citing the anti-conservative, Hollywood hatemongering we are all familiar with our blogger remains anonymous. He says he doesn’t want to hurt his career any more than he already has being a conservative in Hollywood. So, with deference to "HollywoodTrench's blog," I'll lay out his argument for you all to decide if he has hit the spot or if he is a bit too conspiratorial for your tastes.
Illustration One - Gibson/Obama
Notice how the camera angles for the Gibson interview with Barack Obama makes them both appear to be equal in size. Notice how their heads are aligned, neither looking smaller or larger than the other. Notice also, our Hollywood blogger says, how the shot was never a "tight" one, that it was a wide frame shot.
Illustration Two - Gibson/Clinton
Just for good measure, our blogger friend throws in a still shot of an interview Gibson did with Senator Hillary Clinton. It shows the same framing technique as the Obama interview.
Illustration Three - Gibson/Palin
Here is what our blogger says of the angles and framing of the Palin interview:
Now take a look at Sarah Palin's interview below. Funny how all the shots are no wider than the one on the left. There's a reason for this. While it's true that Governor Palin is of less stature than Mr. Gibson, the deliberate choice of the camera's height, framing and the use of telephoto lenses all serve to make Mr. Gibson look overpowering and Governor Palin the weak prey. This is common shooting technique we use to make a villain appear more ominous. How intuitive of ABC News to correctly portray themselves.
I have to say, it is an interesting observation that Gibson never looks larger, or seems to be occupying a higher position in the frame when he was interviewing Obama and Clinton. Gibson is always shot as an equal with Clinton and Obama. When compared to how monstrously large he was in juxtaposition with his subject in the Palin interview, well, it certainly makes one pause to think. Was ABC using camera techniques to make Charlie Gibson seem large and commanding and Sarah Palin correspondingly small and weak? Did ABC attempt to put Sarah Palin at a disadvantage to give the viewer the worst possible impression before she was asked even the first question?
I think the blogger makes a good case.
What do you think?
(This little tip came from the "B-Cast" from BreitbartTV folks and was brought to my attention by Evan A Slatis. By the way, the B-Cast mentions our Newsbusters post on the Tom Toles/Obama plagiarism story.)

Talented videographers did not make a mistake here
September 13, 2008 - 21:40 ET by nkviking75I say that network money buys the best videographers in the world, so it's hard to believe this effect is by accident.
The McCain campaign and their surrogates need to directly attack the MSM for openly campaigning for Obama. That was the subtext of the "celebrity" attack on Barry. They should also insist on their own camera in every interview and release the raw footage whenever a network edits their tape in a deceptive way.
When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.
How it actually works...from the source.
September 13, 2008 - 23:03 ET by MrCameramanThe following blog post is entirely the opinion of the poster and not that of any news agency.
Your assumptions here about biased camera angles and the secret motives behind them is completely untrue in this case. Your comment about network money hiring great videographers is true and I accept your compliment. Way too much is being read into this particular subject.
Let's just say that I have intimate knowledge of how and why the shot was framed the way it was. The Governor is definitely smaller than Charlie Gibson, and bcs. the interview involved three cameras, any use of a "riser" for Palin would have been seen by the viewer and looked crappy in the third shot. Had Charlie's camera been pedestaled down and shot more up, it would have been unflattering to Charlie and would have not shown the homey, warm background in the two shot. Why wasn't the shot wider? Too many cables and production clutter all over the floor, peripheral crap that doesn't belong in the shot. Raising the camera up would have shown too much floor and would have appeared un-natural. There were absolutley no alterior motives in the selection and framing of the shot...sometimes things just look they way they do...and the decision on how to frame the shots didn't come from ABC News brass, it was the work of the freelance cameramen on location...Most times, reversals or "two shots" are framed to compliment the news talent as well as showcase their backgound.
In your examples of Obama and Clinton, were those three camera interviews that showed floor to head framing? When two cameras are used, it's much easier to place risers (pillows or an applebox, etc.) under the interview subject to raise them up, not in the case of three or four camera interviews.
Did you watch the walk and talks with Charile and Sarah? Did you notice that Charlie is about 6ft. and Sarah about 5'2? Nothing was done there either...it looks how it looks...You have no idea how much work, thought, and detail goes into shoots like these, there is absolutely no time or headspace to think about putting messages into camera angles. Did you notice how great Sarah looked in her single shots? How flattering the lighting was? The depth in her shots that showcased her? The soft filtering on day two that made it look even better? Why wasn't her lighting done badly or done in a way to make her look sinister or otherwise? Because the cameraman's job is to make everyone look great...In my career, it has never even been a thought to make someone look bad in an interview, or think of how I cold use my long lens to play tricks on the audience...no professional news cameraman enters into a siutaiton that way.
Remember, the McCain campaign chose Gibson and ABC News for this interview, and I'll bet you they couldn't have been happier about the ratings it got and the way it was handled. Let's be careful not to throw conspiracy theories into every aspect of how TV news works. I invite other professional tv cameramen and production types to throw in their opinion.
That's helpful and thanks for that

September 13, 2008 - 23:09 ET by dmntd1So you're saying that in no way did the camera lenses have anything to do with this? I think this was a major point of the blog. That the telephoto lenses used also contributed to the effect of the framing was, as I read it, a bonus for a leftward biased entity.

Your claim...
September 13, 2008 - 23:19 ET by Warner Todd HustonWell, "mr.cameraman," it's your "expert" claim against the "expert" claim of the original blogger I cite. So, we have to decide which to believe, you or the source I cited? It's a he-said/he-said argument at this point.
actually, no it's not.
September 14, 2008 - 00:11 ET by MrCameramanThere's a big difference between Hollywood direction and news direction. It's not really a "he said, she said" when one of us was on location, and one of us was not. So yes, you have to decide who to believe as I sit in a hotel in Wasilla, AK waiting to fly home. Please feel free to remove the quotes from the expert reference to me.
Oh, I do
September 14, 2008 - 00:31 ET by Warner Todd HustonOh, I do feel free to remove them, just as I felt free to add them. You see, you are just an anonymous commenter on a website, just as the guy I quoted originally is. Neither of you can be taken as 100% certified because neither of you are willing to come clean with your identities.
So, you see, it IS a he said/he said argument here. You have no more credibility than the original source necessarily. You claim to be a cameraman, you claim you were on the scene and you claim to be in Wasilla. No one can verify these claims.
We can merely believe it on faith or feel you are just a crank. There is no middle ground, no way to place your claims in any context to assure veracity.
So, the quotes stay... for now.
You've stated your case and now people have to take it or leave it because there is no other way to assure its content.
But, you'll excuse us not to believe your assurance that the media is innocent. We here see proof every single day that the media is out to destroy any and all Republicans and conservatives. The media is particularly unAmerican at its core and we see that and chronicle it here.

September 14, 2008 - 01:53 ET by tomnkikiIf you scroll down to this post on Newsbusters.org, you will see a side shot of Gibson and Palin. It looks to be a little more accurate as far as size and detailing. She doesn't look quite as small...maybe about 4" shorter than Gibson. I do find it curious that Hillary Clinton didn't look that much shorter than Gibson, and Osama should look about the same as Gibson, since they are roughly the same height.

September 14, 2008 - 00:40 ET by nofateThen why wasn't all that "peripheral crap" in the way when the Obama and Clinton interviews were shot?
Really. And the MSM is objective. You may be an entirely honest and honorable cameraman, but I'm sorry, I'm having trouble buying it that there are not ulterior motives in nearly everything the MSM does. How many supercilious, hounding questions did Gibson ask Clinton and Obama? Not your job, I guess.

This caught my eye, and is an excellent question. Were they? I don't know, I can't tell. Maybe a professional videographer can. But, why use a technique that makes it more difficult to make someone look better in one case, but not in another? Surely a professional would be aware of the benefits and drawbacks of certain techniques.
As for the "peripheral crap that doesn't belong in the shot," wouldn't a skilled professional be able to deal with that, instead of letting it effect the "cameraman's job... to make everyone look great?"
I would also say that just because there is no blatant and obvious trickery on every shot is not proof there was no subtle trickery on any shot.
Finally, as seen on a thread yesterday about the shot of McCain on the Atlantic magazine cover, free-lance photography is no guarantee of a lack of bias being introduced in some subtle manner. Once it's in the can, it's "take it or leave it" for the customer. And ABC was not about to leave this, even if they did object to these "style points." Which I haven't heard them say. No assumptions here.
Consider me willing to consider your points, but not yet convinced of them.

It shows how low they'll stoop to make sure their pick is placed in the white house. We must be very determined that they DO NOT get their way.
One other thing to note...
September 13, 2008 - 21:59 ET by CortillaenI'm sure most people are already aware of the difference in tone between the Dem and Rep interviews, but these stills do an excellent job of capturing that, too. Take a look at Gibson's face in each of the five stills, particularly his eyes, brow, and lips. Notice that, of the three stills of his interviews with Obama and Clinton, the closest thing to a frown he displays is something like interest or intrigue in the first. Then take a look at the stills of his interview with Palin, and the stern, furrowed brow just jumps out at you. You can also see how the lines around his mouth are tighter, especially in the last still, in which he clearly disliked what he'd just heard. I also notice that the lighting seems rather darker in Palin's interview than either of the others. It's kind of hard to believe anything is an accident when it comes from the MSM...

absolute trickery
September 13, 2008 - 22:06 ET by MazziThere was no question that Palin was represented as smaller than Gibson, but I believe it backfired! Besides looking like he was weaned on a pickle, Gibson looked like a big mean bully. Palin supporters love the fact that she is a woman, so being smaller than him is not an issue!
I am going to go out on a limb here, but I am guessing that Gibson ordered that framing and the lowered seating because he is a pompus arse, and that it was not ABC's call. (Trust me, I give them no credit in most things, but this seems like Gibson's own egotrip).
It's typical lib mentality, though. Because the feminazi's started demanding boosters on their chairs thinking it would "equal" things out, they are too shallow to realize that the opposite is not true.
Anyway, just because it backfired does not mean it was not media bias. It seems like (finally) all of the MSM bias is backfiring. About damned time!

not true
September 14, 2008 - 16:13 ET by MrCameramanAnchors and correspondents don't order that type of thing. It's up to the producer and crew on site to determine what looks good for the shot...trickery or deception is never discussed, just doesn't work that way in the field. After shooting for the networks for ten years, that's never happened. There may or may not be bias behind the scenes, but not in the technical aspects of news production.
Am I naive?
September 15, 2008 - 10:52 ET by MazziI may be naive, but my understanding is that many of these anchors are prima dona's, and they DO make demands, and their demands are usually met.
Nothing personal Mr.Cameraman, but why should I believe you? I don't know who you are, or if you are what you claim to be. And if you are, you may well be part of the problem - hardly one to be trusted to be honest and forthright in their integrity.
Anyway, firsthand accounts from people who have worked with these ego-tripper's would lead me to believe that they absolutely can, and do, make stupid, petty, decisions like this, and that their crew geneflucts as they carry out the demands.
I may be wrong, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Body Language
September 13, 2008 - 22:30 ET by doug1950I understand they did a body language segment on Gov. Palin after the fact during this interview. I do not particularly believe in such stuff. To me it ranks right up there with reading the bumps on one's head to determine their future but I would be interested to hear one of the body language folks do a "read" on Gibson in the same segment. I already know what I think of him but it isn't fit for print or general consumption. Ive always found him to be somewhat of a pri*k.

That is a worthless interpretation when one finds out that he can't put his arms behind his back because of old injuries. I've used body language along with other techniques in order to get what i want in business situations. So, It does have some validity. And some might say it is just heightened common sense.
Telephoto Lens
September 13, 2008 - 22:32 ET by slpThe over the shoulder shots of Gibson are the zoom lens in its telephoto range. That makes Gibson look larger and Palin look smaller. The camera had to be farther away from Palin than the over the shoulder camera in the Obama interview.
In the Obama interview, the camera was nearer to Obama. The left photograph is the zoom lens in the wide angle range. That is why Obama looks larger than Gibson.
Of course, it may be than the area available for the camera at the Obama interview was smaller than at the Palin interview.
You should also note that Gibson wore red power ties for Clinton and Palin and a non-confrontational blue tie for Obama.
Gibson really is big in real life

Did ABC attempt to put Sarah Palin at a disadvantage to give the viewer the worst possible impression before she was asked even the first question?"
In a word, YES.
ABC showed a state Governor as a little girl - showed ABC's bias
September 14, 2008 - 01:15 ET by chazskiThe posing of Governor Palin in such an inferior position to Gibson was the first thing I noticed. It made the Governor look like a little girl being instructed by a vastly superior adult. It also showed beyond all dispute the triviality of ABC for engaging in such superficiality in what should have been a sober examination of Governor Palin's qualifications to be VP. Instead, ABC chose to engage in trite distortions with camera angles, cheap shots based of misquotes about God's will, and gotcha questions about a doctrine that exists only in the mangled minds of liberals.
Gibson and Palin Camera Shots
September 14, 2008 - 05:12 ET by holmesauthorIt was obvious that Charlie Gibson made gave Palin the smaller and more uncomfortable chair so that he could tower over her. Fortunately, she did not let it bother her own delivery.
Liar, Liar
September 14, 2008 - 06:49 ET by flyingmonkeyWith all due respect to MrCameraman, this is what the MSM is doing to themselves and their crews by lying so much. Do you believe that readership and viewership is declining because people don't care anymore? No, it's declining because people are tired of having to separate the truth from the lies. While your explanation sounds plausible, why would we believe you?
missing the point...
September 14, 2008 - 16:08 ET by MrCameramanthanks for the respect...appreciate that. I'm not really talking about MSM bias or lies or whatever, and I know that this blog is dedicated to that, and that's great...I'm speaking from a strictly technical point of view bcs. I was there doing the work...that's why my explanation is plausible. The freelance techs that get the work done aren't really in the business of seeing their work thru an agenda...We get called to do a job, we shoot it and leave...simple as that...the techs just don't care if the network they are working for has a bias or not....it's all about paying the mortgage and the healthcare bills for the family, like any other business...If you have issues with editorial decisions, that's one thing, but it really is two different worlds...that's what I've been trying to explain.
Yeah Right Camera "cough cough" man....
September 23, 2008 - 15:42 ET by RhinocerosCameraman,
Cut the crap pal, “IF” you were the shooter or a technician YOU did not make the choice. Unless you are shooting “down and dirty news” from a police scanner don’t try to make anybody believe that this interview was “Thrown” together and you just happened to get there first.
This was the most anticipated interview in the world. Youcan better believe that the network had producers and directors fighting over this one. They analyzed it to death and then created their game plan to shoot the interview based on which way the owner of the network was politically leaning. After much debate they chose the appropriate producer for this segment and the appropriate director. And this was done weeks in advance.
The crew did what they do. The 1st AC pointed his camera using the format, angles , lenses and staging that was dictated to him by the director. The 2 AC set the cables. The sound man was rolling separate sound and the gaffer set the lights according to what the director dictated and I can assure you that ( if you were the shooter) YOU did not light either of these subjects.
That news station must be feeling nervous about this woman because besides the obvious choice of lenses, made to make this woman look small, and the very very poor choice of framing where she looks like a little black cloud on Charlie’s horizon; there is the choice of background.
When Mr. Obama was interviewed they made the choice to interview him in an upscale restaurant, him wearing a blue suit, pink gel on the lights which brings out the red in the back ground. (We know the lights were gel'd because it also made the table cloths and subjects look happy and rosy as opposed to the table farther in the back with a white table cloth on it) The white shirt collar over the blue suit in fact enhanced the red, white and blue theme. Mr. Obama’s chair was turned toward the lense a bit so we can see the side of his face. Very nice. Charlie too had non-confrontational matching clothing and the background was lit so that it showed an upscale environment with no source light to draw my eye away from the candidate.
The choice of Hilary’s environment was an environment where we think of education, possibly a non confrontational choice on the directors part because he knew he was going to light the background with an almost irritating sourcie light that would make us feel uncomfortable and pull our attention away from Hilary except for that very hot light on the top of her hair. That light makes us look for a more comforting source of light. Which we can’t find because we have something orange in the background which clashed with Charlie’s red tie. So we come away from the interview with an uncomfortable feeling.
Now lets look at Ms. Palin's interview. The first thing I notice is the light behind Charlie. Then the window light with that huge blue and red whatever it is. The background is a complete mess. Her lighting is nonexistent, his key light was not put on the proper side so when he looked in her direction his eyes did not light up; in fact they looked dark and ominous.
Yes, the framing is a point but there are so many choices to be made here. Color, background, lights and where to put them. Key lights, choice’s of lenses and Mr. Cameraman who only hints at being the shooter but does not come out and say it because the real 1st AC will probably be suing you. Are you telling me that in this political environmentthat you and your sound guy went fishing? You did not jump on a plane and go to the next interview such as responses from political pundits about the most anticipated interview in the world?
Are you telling me that the director of the most anticipated interview in the world doesn’t know dick about lighting, lenses and proper framing so he let YOU make the choice?
And you have such a ridicules work ethic that you have wires strung all over the set, and equipment so people can trip over them. You actually had the sound mixer in the room? What? Didn't his cables extend enough to put the sound mixer outside the door? And you had campaign people in the room too???
I noticed no producer or director was mentioned. And I can assure you that no producer is going to watch from the monitor outside and if he did, the director would be in the room. Also I am going to guess that the attorneys for both camps were there as well as her handlers. Oh but of course that can’t be true because the room was sooooo small and the cables took up sooo much room that ………
Poser.
And another thing… how is it the secret service let a stringer shoot this? Not even a union man who know’s that the proper choice for a straight interview would be pedding up or down to equal the heights of the talent? And as we ALL know they weren’t standing! So 6’ or 5’2 would not have made that huge of a difference to a real shooter. And call the Ihop? Dude you don’t have the brains or the imagination to work in the industry if that’s the best lie you can come up with. “Me thinks he doth protest too much” comes to mind actually.
So Kid, take your $199. Camera back to target and stop pretending. Or yet go shoot another fishing show for your local cable station.
I love unbiased opinions from news people. I prefer them. It makes me ill that a newsperson has to screw up his face and give you his opinion if only by the wrinkle in his brow or the scowl on his face. What ever, now we know that Charlie is more interested in making the news, or rather making up the news than reporting it.
I don’t know who is going to win, I have no opinion about it. But I do know that using the news to deceive people is a terrible thing. It is an unforgivable thing by both political party’s. And you all know what I’m talking about. Put your information out there without all the deceptive tricks and stop causing Americans to hate other Americans.
I didn't watch the Bill
September 14, 2008 - 06:49 ET by nicksmith112I didn't watch the Bill O'Reilly interview with Obama in it's entirety but I noticed that the 6' 5" Bill O. didn't appear to be a giant towering over his guest as he usually does in these types of sit down interviews. No shots of both standing near each other either.
I'm very curious to see how the debates are setup. The Obama camp would loves to get the Barack standing next to a much shorter McCain.
I'm a refugee from the Democratic Party.
Thanks WTH -- this answers
September 14, 2008 - 08:12 ET by Jack BauerThanks WTH -- this answers some of my puzzlement at what it was that was making Governor Palin look so odd in these shots.
Remember guys, this is the interviewer they chose first because he was going to give them a fair shake.
He was bad enough, so what are the rest going to be like.
The McCain team needs to do three things...
#1. Never forget that the Main Street Morons are looking to screw you every which way they can, 24/7/365.
#2. From now on, only offer the VP pick up for live interviews, no editing. What's to be gained from not doing that?
#3. Have their own camera to tape the whole interview, post it immediately on line with a transcript.
Anything less than this is asking for it.

palin camera position
September 15, 2008 - 11:07 ET by mplumsteadAs a lifelong electronic media professional (60+ years) I believe Palin is more of a fox than even her supporters realize.
Most posts seem to forget she has TV camera experience. I believe she either chose her camera positions or allowed ABC to stage them. She knows exactly how tough she is, but everything in her demeanor and technique attempts to show the opposite. A camera angle enhancing a fragile image works to her advantage. It stirs the pot in her favor.
Gibson is a pompous buffoon like most TV anchors. He's been had by Lady Palin. It will be a gift that keeps on giving to her throughout the campaign. She leveraged her credibility against his ego and won.

I think
September 18, 2008 - 05:40 ET by Warner Todd HustonI think you seem a bit uninformed. Plus, I'd say you don't have much historical perspective.
You suffer from what post modernism spawned: doubt-of-everything. It takes no intellectual effort to doubt everything, any more than it takes to believe everything.
