The folks at Yahoo News Photos section must have been greatly amused by their web page titled "Anthropology & Archaeology." The first four pictures in the slide show are various archaeological discoveries... well, except for the third one. THAT one happens to be a photo of John McCain. Yes, Yahoo seems to be saying that John McCain is an archaeological artifact! Nice ageist slap, eh?
Here's a screen shot of the original page...

The first two images in the Yahoo slideshow depict a pair of photos provided by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki of artifacts from a dig in Greece. The McCain photo, on the other hand, has a caption quoting John McCain's thoughts on the latest Indiana Jones movie. All the rest of the photos in the slideshow deal with various archaeological subjects.
Needless to say, the John Mccain photo has no place in this slide show... unless you want to make a slam on McCain for his age.
Not very subtle, Yahoo News. Not very subtle at all.

How outrageous! Good catch WTH
August 30, 2008 - 09:16 ET by Dee BunkThese people are unbelievable.
The MSM also forwarded the Obama campaign talking point of "heart beat away" that's pretty outrageous also. Remember when Hillary tried to say that she should be allowed to stay in the race and that it wasn't the first time the nominating process went to the end? The media had a hay day with that implying that her comments meant Obama was likely to be assassinated. You had to take some leaps to gleam that from what she said, but this clear outrageous statement about "heart beat away" is considered legitimate by them.
Dee
August 30, 2008 - 09:56 ET by shawn228I could be wrong, but from what I remember the msm were upset, mainly because she tried to compare Obama to the Robert Kennedy assasination and did not have much to do with a "heartbeat away" reference.
Real life video games are cool
Even if that were true Shawn
August 30, 2008 - 10:07 ET by Dee Bunkshouldn't they be equally outraged about the much more direct statement of "heart beat away"?
Hillary was clearly stating her reasoning for staying in the race citing other candidacies that went into June (including her husbands). The OBAMA campaign (through operatives) pounced on that as a claim that Obama could be assassinated and the media ran with it. She never said anything about Obama being assassinated. One had to infer that. It's not like she said Obama was a "Gun shot away". That would be comparable
The Obama "heart beat away" claim is a clear slam aimed at picturing him dead. It's much more outrageous than Hillary's statement. There was nothing wrong with Hillary's statement.
" shouldn't they be equally
August 30, 2008 - 10:14 ET by shawn228" shouldn't they be equally outraged about the much more direct statement of "heart beat away"?"
I would have to say no. The implication of an assasinaton is totally different than a "heartbeat away" McCain is 70+. The life expendancy of American male is not much more than a decade on top of that. He has also had a few bouts with cancer.
The fact that McCain might die, or have a stroke is not out of the ordinary for his age, and that would make Sarah Palin the POTUS.
Real life video games are cool
I completely disagree Shawn 8 presidents have died in office
August 30, 2008 - 13:56 ET by Dee Bunk4 were assassinations and 4 were from health reasons. Only one died of a heart attack and that one (Harding) was 57 yrs old. Older Presidents didn't have heart attacks and got through the Presidency just fine.
Many Presidents had unsuccessful assassination attempts and in some cases others were killed. What if Biden is Killed then we have the slim experience of Obama (not that Biden's is very great). Oops that's right we'll have the slim experience of Obama even if Biden doesn't die.
I doubt anyone with a healthy parent or grandparent in their early 70's or a healthy boss in their early 70's or a healthy Priest or Pastor in their early 70's thinks of them as ready to keel over at any moment. It's absurd and part of media partisan brainwashing.
Both McCain or Obama is more likely to Die by assassination then they are of natural causes in the next four years if they are elected President. McCain's mom is still alive and neither of Obama's parents are. That shows you how meaningless death wishes are. Anyone can die at any time from an accident, murder or illness no matter what their age. McCain has longevity in his genes and could live to be over 100. Not only is his mom alive, but she isn't senile.
Now - even if he were to die Sarah Palin could easily pick a V.P. with much more experience than Biden.
If it's offensive to talk about the possibility of death, I'd think that talking about in in the context of justifying staying in a race because "anything can happen" (not just death) vs advocating not voting for someone implying that death is likely to happen is completely different. Hillary's comments were very appropriate but these McCain/Palin attacks are not.
Also - of the last 10 prior Presidents - all have lived
August 30, 2008 - 14:11 ET by Dee Bunkpast the age that McCain would be at the end of his term except two - Kennedy who was assassinated and Johnson who had a heart attack at age 64. Most of the others lived into their 80's.
Dee
August 30, 2008 - 16:29 ET by shawn228A few months ago Tim Russert had a heart attack and passed away at 58 yrs old.
John McCain,l I believe will be the oldest President to ever take the oath of office if he wins this election.
I want to be clear I don't approve of any smear jobs on Sara Palin, I am just saying it is not unreasonable for someone to point out that Sarah Palin will be the POTUS if McCain dies. A stroke or a disease or Alheizmers can also make McCain unable to lead and the 25th amendment will have to be implemented.
I like Sarah Palin and I believe it was a good choice, but it is not wrong for people to question her credentials to be Comander in Chief
Real life video games are cool
Shawn - you ignored all my points
August 30, 2008 - 16:53 ET by Dee BunkI've shown that with the last 10 prior Presidents they are just as likely to die from assassination as they are of a heart attack and that the one who died from a heart attack did so at an earlier age than most Presidents live to. Of the 8 remaining 3 are still alive and 2 are older than McCain will be at the end of his term and the other 5 died when they were older than McCain will be at the end of his term.
Your Russert example just further illustrates my point. He was only 58. I personally know 2 people (who were fit and not overweight) who died of heart attacks in their 40's. One was a smoker one wasn't.
People can question her credentials all they want but they shouldn't do it in terms of a Death wish. It's inappropriate. Hillary did not make her statement in terms of a death wish (she gave two examples) she gave it in terms of "anything can happen".
If they were outraged by her statement because they thought it inferred a death wish then they should have for sure been outraged at one that clearly puts one on McCain.
And by "Death Wish" I don't mean they are praying for his death or trying to cause it, only that speaking of someone as if they will die soon when they are healthy is inappropriate and in very bad taste.
Dee
August 30, 2008 - 17:24 ET by shawn228I am not ignorning your points. You make very good points with your statistics. I am just saying it is not over the line to say that Palin is heartbeat away from the Presidency, and there should be no reason for an outcry.
I'm guess you and I will just have to agree to disagree on this one. I'm just glad we can have civil debate :-) I see you are trying to defuse a situation on another thread. Good luck, it looks like it is starting to get ugly.

I don't really want to get involved in either of the two flame wars going on, I just had to give my opinion a couple times. I've learned that it's not worth the effort. I've faced the fact that my normally excellent ability to determine character in people is completely haywire on the Internet. People don't really show their true selves. Some show a better side others show a worse side - there is really no telling. I was way too naive.

Yeah, those are both barn burners, and it's sort of true what an old friend of mine once told me... that blogging allows people to assume a more aggressive and stubborn persona in debates then they would in person. Not saying/assuming that any of us are not strong-willed people face-to-face, but well...
Really, I've learned -- internet, in the flesh, whatever -- that at some point people are what they are and believe what they believe. For this reason, I never go beyond 3 or 4 exchanges in a debate. It's ultimately futile.

August 30, 2008 - 18:33 ET by Dee BunkI'm not blaming any of those people for anything (well except Poptech - I mean come on - he's gone off the deep end).
It's just that I kept clinging to the past of how this place used to be where all of the conservatives got along for the most part. There were arguments but they never dragged on for days let alone week and months. Those things only happened with the trolls. I guess it was just because we were all so united and in agreement about the horrendously unfair coverage of Bush (even though none of us agreed with him on everything).
I also think the crowd used to be older than me on average and now I think it's most likely younger than me on average. I also think they used to delete more comments and ban people more frequently. I hate to generalize but I think people that are under 35 have a much more inflated opinion of themselves than those of us who are older. Men under 35 definitley don't seem to have nearly as much respect for women. I Blame Clinton! Hell I don't really know why - it's just a different place and I know it's never going to be like it used to here.
I don't know how old PopTech is but I'd guess by the way he's acting that he's for sure under 35 and probably in his 20's. Same with Trach.

Key word searches dictate photos
August 30, 2008 - 12:43 ET by pumapurrThe comment about Indiana Jones is right. Slideshow photos are automatically pulled from online photo feeds (AP, Reuters, etc.) based on key word searches of the captions. There are so many gazillions of photos every single day that there isn't manpower from the wire services to hard code "tag" them - so it's all from the caption. If the caption is misleading a bad photo match can be pulled into the slideshow. Then it is up to a human to pull the "weeds". But that is easier said than done - there's a never-ending flood of photos pouring into Yahoo! (They actually do a great job.)
More important slideshows, e.g. "Obama Speech", are intently combed through, ordered, and managed. But something like "Archaeology" is exactly where a bad match is likely to slip by and I think this is just one of those not too unusual errors. (But it is understandable why it looks intentional.)
