Singer Randy Newman on McCain's Music List: 'Then Again, Hitler Liked Some Good Music, You Know?'

  • Bookmark and Share

Blender Magazine, self billed as "the ultimate guide to music and more," is famous for compiling "lists" of music for one thing or another. This month they've gone politics with the candidate's top ten favorite songs as reported by the campaign offices of John McCain and Barack Obama. To make a mountain out of this mole hill, they also invited as commentators on these lists aging funnyman Randy Newman and exhibitionist Gregg Gillis who goes by the stage name "Girl Talk."

For the most part, it is all pointless gibberish that these two "experts" are blathering concerning the two candidate's music picks. But two things stand out... but first the Blender lists:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

JOHN McCAIN

  1. Dancing Queen ABBA
  2. Blue Bayou Roy Orbison
  3. Take a Chance On Me ABBA
  4. If We MakeIt Through December Merle Haggard
  5. As Time Goes By Dooley Wilson
  6. Good Vibrations The Beach Boys
  7. What A Wonderful World Louis Armstrong
  8. I've Got You Under My Skin Frank Sinatra
  9. Sweet Caroline Neil Diamond
  10. Smoke Gets In Your Eyes The Platters

BARACK OBAMA

  1. Ready or Not Fugees
  2. What's Going On Marvin Gaye
  3. I'm On Fire Bruce Spingsteen
  4. Gimme Shelter Rolling Stones
  5. Sinnerman Nina Simone
  6. Touch the Sky Kanye West
  7. You'd Be So Easy to Love Frank Sinatra
  8. Think Aretha Franklin
  9. City of Blinding Lights U2
  10. Yes We Can will.i.am

As I said, two comments from these "experts" stand out. The first is where Gregg Gillis said that he found Obama's pick of "Yes We Can" by will.i.am a bit odd. He didn't seem to know if it was "cool or creepy" that the song was on the list. "Maybe he’s in love with himself," Gillis said, "and wants to hear his speeches over and over as collaged by will.i.am." (By the way, just as presented there was no question mark punctuating the end of that sentence on the Blender site)

Mildly amusing that.

I have to agree with both of them that it was interesting to see The Beatles shut out of the lists, too.

But, not to be outdone by Gillis' mild Obama hit, the dyspeptic Newman had to come out swinging at McCain.

McCain has a really likeable list. Then again, Hitler liked some good music, you know?

I see. So McCain is just like Hitler, eh?

Nice.

dm, Well, you know that

dm, Well, you know that liberals always compare Republicans to Hitler. Short quiz.

What famous leader:

1) Was a vegetarian and encouraged his people to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle?

2) Was anti-smoking and prohibited smoking and created some of the world's first smoking bans?

3) Believed that his nation's youth were out of shape and set up state youth fitness programs?

4) Believed in euthanasia; that old and terminally people should be able to end their suffering; a great burden on state resources?

5) Believed that guns should not be owned by the citizenry, but should remain only in the hands of the police and military for public safety. Prohibited citizen gun ownership?

Answers? Easy quiz. Of course ALL the answers are: Adolf Hitler.

Notice that all these beliefs are prominent in the modern liberal philosophy (several are part of the Democratic platform!). None are part of the Republican philosophy. Now, last question.

Was Hitler a Republican or a Democrat?

What bothers me much more

What bothers me much more than some washed-up loser making gratuitous Hitler comparisons in a glossy music rag that almost nobody reads, is how both candidates' favorite music lists are so clearly calculated to look attractive to as many demographics as possible, all the while remaining as bland and unthreatening as can be. There's just no way that either candidate really just put down the top-10 most played tracks from their iPods (or phonographs, given McCain's notorious dislike for computer technology).

Sorry, there's just no way I could vote for someone who names Abba twice in a top 10.

But seriously, it bothers me to no end that candidates actually have to do this sort of thing at all, much less doctor their lists to give them the widest possible appeal - but they do, because of course the country is full of dunces who will actually cast their vote based on superficial garbage like this. Maybe "who's your favorite band?" will be the "who would you rather have a beer with" of the 08 election.

"Issue-driven politics in red-and-blue America is like a man whose

wow Jason

What bothers you more than someone equating one of the presidential candidates with Hitler, and then being quoted in a magazine that, even if it's readership is on the low end, still gets read and certainly has some influence on tens of thousands of young, impressionable people.... is that the candidates favorite music lists are suspiciously calculated?

Perspective, Jason.

What do you have against Abba? I use to like Abba. Granted, that was when I was 8, but I still liked them. A lot of other people liked them too, so I don’t understand your point.

To me, this who “play list” story is just a bunch of fluff and it is totally irreverent to just about anything outside of a music store. Music is a personal choice and each person's preference is different. I wouldn't say that McCain's tastes in music, or Obama’s for that matter, is any better or worse than my own. I'm not going to judge someone based on their musical preferences and more than I will judge them based of the color preference of their house or their car.

Abba's not cool, okay? Come on, Jason's hangin' out in the NB hallway...

Don't look like a dork and tell people how you like something that is, well, not cool. Granted, okay, they were actually very good at songwriting and, okay, had amazing harmonies and production and, okay, had two hot girls to boot in the band.

Okay, a few points back for Jason. A few. But you're down a whole bunch, still.

But it's hardly gutsy to like them, or even say you like them. What white male doesn't? Girls often don't get them, and, sadly, they don't cross-over nearly as much as they should. The fact that the two guys are, indeed, about as nerdy as they come and rarely perform live doesn't help.

Cobra/Shy

What do you have against Abba? I use to like Abba.

I have nothing against Abba except for what my own taste dictates. Their music is, in my view, unlistenably bad. That said, I was being sarcastic in assessing it as presidential criteria; a candidate could listen to Norwegian death metal for all I care, as long as he's strong on the issues I care about.

And that is exactly the point I'm making; and yes, MrShy, it is relevant. Some loser gets an interview with Blender and indirectly compares McCain to Hitler? That's been going on for years now. And don't forget that it cuts both ways, as writers and posters on this blog, WTH included, routinely refer to liberalism and the Democratic party as fascist. I wholly reject that sort of rhetoric, but at the level to which our political discourse has sunk, I barely even clock these sorts of comments anymore. Just like certain factions on the right with their desperate attempts to equate Obama with Islamic radicalism.

Cobra, your last paragraph is exactly what I'm talking about. There are voters, a significant number, who base their vote on nugatory nonsense like this. And so of course when candidates are asked to compile a top ten list, a great deal of thought has to go into appealing to as many people as possible, representing artists of different races, not listing anyhting offensive; imagine if Obama had put down Dr. Dre as one of his obligatory rap choices instead of the relatively wholesome Fugees! Dr. Dre?! Why, he uses the n-word!

It's simply indicative of the cynicism of the election cycle, nothing more or less.

If you want me to concede that Blender probably wouldn't print the latter, I think you're wrong; I think they'd print it so that they could hype it. It would sell well, and whenever someone cited the conservative's "inappropriate comments" Blender would get credit for smoking out the speaker's prejudices.

Unsan,

I really grew away from Sepultura after "Chaos A.D.". Especially, after Max left, it just wasn't the same. "Arise" may be my favorite from them. There just isn't a bad song on that one.

That said, Amorphis is scheduled to be in San Antonio on Oct. 18 I believe. New singer, but I am still going. Esa Holopainen is underrated as a guitarist. Nothing flashy, just solid.

As a side note, I may be have to take the wife to see Testament and Judas Priest. I would normally be more psyched, but I think Priest is only doing the new songs, so I'm not so sure about it. Motorhead will it worth the ticket price though.

Metal of the World for Citizens of the World

You, me, and countless metal aficionados were weaned off of Sepultura after Max Cavalera left.  You are 100% correct; they just haven't been the same without him.

I just brought up Sepultura as an example of a non-U.S. act that a "citizen of the world" could listen to.  Right now I am on a symphonic metal kick.  Lots of Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, Epica, and Within Temptation of late for me, mixed in with very volatile bursts of Meshuggah (VERY NON-symphonic in every way).

Priest and Testament?  When do they arrive in San Antonio?  Granted, it won't be like their glorious show with Megadeth (that I wish I could have seen!!!) back in 1990, but still, that would be a good set.  The tracks I have heard from Priest's Nostradamus album aren't bad at all.
