For a little humorous break from the world of hard news, we have the embarrassing story of the Valley News that serves Vermont and New Hampshire misspelling its own name on the front page of the July 21 issue.
The big oopsie was followed on July 22 with an egg-on-the-face, editor's note apologizing to the readers for this ridiculous mistake.
Editor's Note - Readers may have noticed that the Valley News misspelled its own name on yesterday's front page. Given that we routinely call on other institutions to hold them accountable for their mistakes, let us say for the record: We sure feel silly.
Gosh darn it but don't they look silly? Still, it's great that they took the gaffe in good humor. After all, with a mistake that absurd, what else could you do?
You can find this amusing little tale on a favorite website called Regret the Error, by Craig Silverman, a site that tracks amusing little gaffes of media entities all across the world.

Warner, that is funny, as someone clearly dropped the ball.

I don't see a big problem
July 25, 2008 - 07:07 ET by FranksamI don't see a big problem here. Obviously this was a double edition of the paper, and everybody knows that "Newss" is the plural form of "News". English is, after all, a living language.
That would be correct if
July 25, 2008 - 07:18 ET by FoolicanThat would be correct if you were speaking Broken English Bloomberg Revised, Edition 2, but the correct plurality for "news" is "newsi." So, too, the correct singular form is "newsus." Yet, saying "news" by itself is perfectly acceptable since it is the nationally recognized abbreviation for the formerly mentioned words.

Valley News is a crappy little paper
July 25, 2008 - 10:11 ET by porterjervisI have family that lives in the area it’s distributed. You can burn though
it in 5 minutes.
Most of the articles are re-prints from AP and Washington Post. Can't
imagine how they could have let that happen given that all they do is parrot
other papers.
A Friend in Vermont
July 25, 2008 - 13:18 ET by Del DolemonteA friend of mine in Vermont uses it to start his fire every morning. After he's read the horoscopes and comics, of course.
Their competitor is much better, despite being a weekly.

This is the funniest thing since S.F. Chronicle
July 25, 2008 - 20:54 ET by L.N. SmitheeBack in the nineties, the unions at the S.F. Chronicle were locked out. The publishers put out a shorter version of the paper itself, while the strikers put out a tabloid called the S.F. Free Press. On the first Wednesday edition of the Chron, the front page had the day spelled "WENDESDAY."
The strike ended tragically -- an employee loved and respected by management and union alike died while trying to sabotage an electrical box in an attempt to disable the printers at the non-union shop the suits used. The day after, the parties came together.
"Well, I've got nothing against the press...they wouldn't print it if it wasn't true..." -- Joe Jackson, "Sunday Papers"
Um...
July 25, 2008 - 21:23 ET by Warner Todd HustonWas that said sarcastically? I sure hope so because the death of a law breaking, union thug doesn't seem too darn tragic to me! Especially since he caused it HIMSELF!
WTH, Union goons self-destructing.
