New PETA Ad Not Controversial At All

**VIDEO Below the Fold**

Apparently the newest big-deal-ad that everyone is supposed to get all upset over is an advertisement by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) that came out this week. Unfortunately for them, I can't see how anyone would get too exercised over it. In fact, to my mind the message and its treatment are perfectly well handled. So, it all is a humbug instead of a controversy.Yes, this is quite a first for PETA. An ad we DON'T have to get upset over.

I guess some people are wondering if the ad is based on a moral equivalence of spaying and neutering animals and teen pregnancy. Apparently, we are supposed to get all up in arms that the ad features parents telling their young teenaged daughter to go have all the sex and pump out all the kids she wants because they can just abandon the unwanted kids in the streets or in shelters. This, of course, is a satiric way to comment on the fact that pet owners don't spay and neuter their pets and, therefore, their pets have unwanted pregnancies that get dumped in the street or left at shelters.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

PETA is selling this as an "unusual birth-control message," and Fox News even did a report on the ad saying that PETA was using "teen pregnancy to push pet message."

But, in the end, there is no real there, there. The ad is amusing, the message is mainstream and it is obvious that no one is really saying unwanted teen pregnancies are the same as unwanted pet pregnancies.

But the ad isn't raising any hackles in the conservative community, that's for sure. The folks at HotAir didn't think it a big deal. Allahpundit said, "it’s clearly a goof it’s hard to see them as drawing moral equivalence between teen pregnancy and animal pregnancy." Even the folks at Free Republic didn't think the ad was a big deal.

So, PETA has a miss that is really a hit. They wanted controversy, they wanted to gin everyone up, but all they ended up with is a good message presented in an entertaining way. In other words, they did a good job with the message and a bad job trying for controversy.

Fox News has tried to make a big deal of it. Will the rest of the MSM try to?

I actually agree.  When I

I actually agree.  When I first read about the ad over at Fox I immediately became uncomfortable and was about to start ranting about how immoral the ad was, etc.  Then I watched the ad myself.  From start to finish, even a moron would know this was an attention-grabbing attempt on part of PETA.  It was like a "Saturday Night Live" skit and nothing more.

I'm More Into Those PETA Ads Featuring Nude Actresses...

Look, I could care less for PETA's messages they try to print or broadcast, but I always do get a kick out those I'D RATHER HAVE NO FUR AT ALL print campaigns. I mean, who wouldn't? It has sexy women in the buff! Other than that, though, I really don't care much for their politics.

FYI, I think the best one is the ad featuring Alicia Silverstone near a swimming pool.

Actually is a cute ad. And

Actually is a cute ad. And it does hit the point appropriately. A lot of people now-a-days think of their pets as their children.

Even a broken clock is

Even a broken clock is right twice a day so PETA is for once making a agreeable point with this ad.

note to PETA

Most people are smart enough to understand things like metaphors, so next time make your point a little more subtle if you want controversy.

It's sad that PETA has to make up controversy about their own ads to make it into the media.

OK.  I'll admit it.  I'm

After hurricane Katrina, PETA was given thousands of pets to care for until they could be reunited with their owners. When there was no more money to be made from this, PETA solved the problem by killing all the animals. Really ethical people aren't they?

OMG!!!

I'm sorry, but as much as I hate PETA, this ad is a riot!  I personally don't see anything here which can be misconstrued.  The parallel is genius and kind of hits home.  As such, I will immediately be taking my goldfish into the vet to have them fixed.

Sex, Drugs and PETA

I'm sorry, maybe I am too much of an old fuddy duddy, but I am tired of seeing everything on TV becoming sexualized.

I can't stand all of those commercials for Viagra, Cialis and other medications that are intended to enhance your sexual performance. Those commercials make it seem like they are selling an aphrodisiac. I hate watching them so much that I mute the TV at first sign that one is coming on.

I am also assaulted on the AM radio with similar commercials from Boston Medical Group and several other non-prescription pills that are supposed to enhance sex. They even have commercials for these over-the-counter products for women. I think that the over the counter products are scams and should be investigated.

I wonder how many people who do take Viagra or Cialis are physically healthy and are just using it as a recreational drug in order to enhance their experience. I wonder how many people are taking it to counter the sexual side effects of cocaine or other illegal drugs. I wonder if they sell Viagra and Cialis on the black market, in night clubs or in conjunction with cocaine; because cocaine tends to make your mind want sex, but your body is unable to perform..

I don't like any of those commercials on TV for medications. They are pushing many of the drugs on people who don't even need it. Did you know that 20,000 people a year die from abusing legal medications? Many of the medications that they are pushing on TV, are the same ones that people are abusing.

I often hear the media tout the fact that deaths from illicit drugs has dropped to 17,000 per year, but they never mention that 20,000 people also die annually from abusing prescription medications, like Kieth Ledger. Recently I heard a statistic that said 40% of Americans are currently taking some kind of medication. I wonder how much of that is actually necessary.

Pharmaceutical medications have replaced illegal drugs for many addicts, and the drug companies are happy to have their business. Thanks to the Medicare Prescription Drug program, our taxes are we paying for many drug addicts fixes.

Here is a link to an article, from "Times Online" that I read shortly after Keith Ledges death about the abuse of prescription medication.

I fear that many of our lawmakers in congress are on some type of legal medications such as Prozac, Zoloft, Xanax, Ambien, Valium, Ritalin, Viagra, etc. Although these medications can be legal prescribed, don't you think that they can affect a lawmakers judgment. Whenever I see Nancy Polocy on TV, it looks like she is on some type of psychotropic medication. She has facial twitches and it appears that she has a dry mouth. Wouldn't it be prudent to get rid of lawmakers that have mental problems that requires medication.

I guess I kind of veered off course from the topic, but it reminded me of all those commercials on TV that I hate watching.

I don't think that they should portray teenagers talking so casually about sex on TV. Also, I am not so sure how I feel about "fixing" animals. After all, if the animals aren't pedophiles, they are receiving cruel and unusual punishment for no reason. That entire commercial rubbed me the wrong way.

Well...

Well, me too!

But, um, who the heck is "Keith Ledges"?

Heath Ledger

Sorry about the typo, I meant Heath Ledger. He is the co-star in the new Batman movie that is coming out this weekend. He died in January (after he completed filming Batman) from a drug overdose of a cocktail of legal drugs, just like Anna Nichole Smith and her son.

Heath Ledger achieved fame and became a Hollywood darling after he portrayed a homosexual cowboy in Broke-back mountain.

yep

I thought as much.

;)

i agree with your first

i agree with your first point; i would like to say that Heath Ledger's death was more a caveat about the danger of taking Ambien--from what i recall reading, Ledger probably didn't even know he died, having slepwalked and took another medication that countered the Ambien. my elderly mother took Ambien, and there were times she would turn zombie-like and not even be aware of what she was doing.

Frankly, I'm dissapointed.

This was a great ad.  I'm dissapointed and surprised to find that there actually must be at least one sane person working at PETA.  Most of their previous output had demonstrated that they are litterally insane.

PETA finally said something...

...worth listening to.  I write and produce radio commercials for a living and that was a good ad.  What I liked about it was that it took something familiar and turned it on it's head to effectively make a completely different point.  That's what advertising is supposed to do

Now if PETA had stuck with that kind of message instead of the "meat if murder" or the "rather go naked than wear fur" B.S., they might have been taken seriously as an animal advocacy group like the Humane Society or the ASPCA.  Instead, their "edgy" (read annoying, classless, and often disgusting) protests over the years has made them appear as whack job activists.  That's an image of PETA that one good ad cannot overcome.
