WAFB TV Channel 9, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana pulled out all the stops for this ridiculous report claiming that "some women" in the Pelican State are resorting to working in strip clubs because gasoline is so expensive. To prove it, WAFB found one woman that said so. I'd say that clinches this as "fact," then, wouldn't you?
In typical sensationalistic news fashion, WAFB TV assumes that because gas is more expensive, women across the state are throwing away their morals to work as strippers.
During these tough economic times, many people are struggling to make ends meet. The city's housing market is in a slump, gas and food prices are rising, and some say it's either sink or swim. Now, some women are going to great lengths to make some extra cash right in Baton Rouge.
Really? "Great lengths," eh? So, to believe this report we have to assume that strip clubs are doing well enough that a great influx of new employees is possible. But here is the question: if the economy is so bad, how is it that strip clubs are going so strong? That doesn't make much sense, WAFB.
Still, the sensationalism continues.
It's a fantasy, an escape for some attempting to close off the outside world. However, for the women inside who are barely clothed and strapped into high heels, exotic dancing can be a way to survive. "All of my bills were getting to be too much, especially when gas started going up," says one woman, who'll be referred to as Amber throughout the report to protect her identity.
Absurdly, WAFB uses the "some women" line twice.
With the average price of gasoline in these parts at an all-time high of $4.00 per gallon, and food costs rising, some women are entering the world of adult entertainment. This world of quick cash is nothing new to Amber. She stripped for three years in local clubs, but took a break after finding out she was pregnant. She then got back into the profession shortly after gas prices started rising and feeding her child got difficult. "Honestly, there are some days where I just don't eat because I can't afford to go buy food. Especially when it comes to diapers or milk, oh my God."
Then the TV reports hits even more salacious material by talking about the "rapes" that occur in these strip clubs, the drug abuse, etc. WAFB pulls out all the stops for this piece.
The ending is interesting, too.
Amber says she is currently in school. She says she knows quite a few women who have recently turned to exotic dancing in order to either pay their bills, get through school, or take care of their children.
Say, WAFB, did you ever think to wonder exactly why our poor little Miss Amber knows so many women who have turned to exotic dancing to make a living? Might it be that it's because these are the sorts of people she hangs around with? I mean if one hangs around with feminists, then all one will know is feminists. If one hangs around a bowling alley, one will get to know an awful lot of bowlers. And, did anyone stop to wonder where Mr. Amber was? And did anyone realize that one of the reasons that Miss Amber is having such a bad time of it is because there isn't a Mr. Amber to help her?
Taking Amber's experiences and exploding them into some sort of state wide trend is amazing. But that is what WAFB certainly tried to do. Welcome to sensationalist TV. It's the Jerry Springer news in Louisiana.

These excuses are for the weak minded, lazy people who find it easier to stick their @$$es out then to find a real job.

July 17, 2008 - 08:49 ET by motherbeltsarc, no one here is disputing a stripper's right to work in that field if she wants to. If they want to do it because they think it's fast or easy money, that's their business.
For example, the woman in the piece has used this work to support herself before. She could do something else; she chooses to do this.
The problem is the media's depicion of women supposedly being driven to this out of desperation because of high gas prices.
But I guess a woman being "forced" to take a job at Home Depot doesn't carry quite the pathos.

My question on getting this story. Did the WAFB people have to watch the show 3 times to make sure they got the story straight? Kind of like when the police had to watch the show three times to make sure it was obscene. Did they includ scenes of her stripping in the news to keep people watching?
My hunch. The stripper is more honest than WAFB.

July 17, 2008 - 08:16 ET by Mean Gene Dr. LoveCan they set up poles at the gas stations so we can have some entertainment while we fill up? That way we could also make sure they're spending their tips on gasoline...'cause that is the whole reason they're doing it right?
I don't mean to be superficial, crass, or rude, but in the name of equal opportunity, what about the 'ugly' women...what about them, they can't exactly work the pole (at least not in the better clubs) what are they going to do for gas money? What about the men that can't afford gas?
The whole idea of women doing this "because they have to" is ridiculous. If higher gas prices is their justification for taking on this type of employment then would it be a reasonable guess that when milk starts selling for $10 a gallon these same women will start turning tricks.
What about studying hard in school and getting a good education while you're young to prepare yourself to live in a world that is full of uncertainty? Living well within one's means is also another good place to start.
This 'expose' was totally disingenius. WAFB should be ashamed. Oh, nevermind...isn't Shameless Reporting 101 part of the core curriculum in Journalism programs these days?

July 17, 2008 - 10:31 ET by Mike S"She says she knows quite a few women who have recently turned to exotic dancing in order to either pay their bills, get through school, or take care of their children."
I know all kinds of people who show up to work - just to pay the bills or take care of their children. If they didn't have to pay the bills, they wouldn't have to work. I'm sure that during Bill Clinton's 1990's there weren't any strippers who were there "just to pay the bills."
We all do what we have to in order to pay the bills. Women (and men) who can justify stripping in order to pay the bills have always been with us. Citing ONE case doesn't come anywhere close to proving that their numbers are increasing due to the price of gas.

Stripping as a profession?
July 17, 2008 - 10:40 ET by bassndudeStripping as a profession? Or for gas money? Or is it because the woman wants, needs money and one sure fire way to get it is to strip. As long as your morally anorixic, half way decent looking, dont mind putting your body on display and have no skills to market, stripping is a great way to make a buck to get your fix. You dont need any talent, dont need to count change, stock shelves, ect. Most of the Circle K stores here are looking for help. Convience stores are no more dangerous than working the late shift at the strip. As a matter of fact, it is less so. The gas money line is a load of crap.

strippers and hookers
July 17, 2008 - 12:04 ET by garyganuI hate it when I hear reports and movies about strippers and hookers that make them out to be virtuous women who are forced to to lower their high moral standards for a noble cause.
It is typical of liberals to believe that the ends always justify the means in tough situations. For example, they say that people resort to crime because they are poor. They say that people resort to drugs because life seems hopeless. They say that people resort to terrorism because of social injustice. etc, etc, etc. They justify the most horrific behaviour, even murder, because they are a victim of something.
The truth is, people do bad things because they are bad people, for whatever reason, they are bad people.
Usually women who become hookers and strippers, (yes, most strippers will have sex with you in the back room for a substantial fee, or they will arrange for a tryst after work), do so because they have extremely low moral standards. Most often they do it to support their drug habit. Often these women are continually allowing themselves to be victimized by men (pimps, boyfriends, bosses, etc.) You might say that I am stereotyping, yes I am, but this stereotype happens to be true in the majority of cases.
Why does the media look for the least likely scenario; a virtuous hooker or stripper and publicize her story? First off, I would not believe the word of a hooker/stripper, they often lie. In the Duke University lacrosse team rape scandal (fabrication), it turned out that the stripper/hooker was lying all along. They found semen from 3 different men in her body, but none from the accused rapists. However the media did not question her credibility and never mentioned that she was a hooker.
Every policeman that I heard calling into talk radio stations said that stripper/hookers often lie to police about being raped. They often threaten men that they will "cry rape" if they don't give them money, drugs or even a ride. The media played up this lying hooker/stripper in Durham NC as if she were a virtuous women, who was forced to strip because of hard times, when the truth was she was a mentally ill, drug addicted woman.
The generalizations that I am making are true for the vast majority of hooker/strippers, yet they constantly make movies about the least likely scenarios for hooker/strippers. For example in "Pretty Women" Julia Roberts was a good, honest, virtuous woman. I was amazed that in the movie she did not accept any money until the end of the weekend. How likely is that. In most cases a woman who is willing to sell her body is also willing to lie, cheat and steal for money, but Roberts was honest and trusting as the day is long. There were times in the movie where she actually turned down money. I don't think that any hooker in history has turned down money from a client.
I have also seen a "made for TV movies" portraying a hooker as struggling single mother who is working her way through school because her husband died and she had no choice. This is a very common theme, there were several movies made along these lines. The truth is that hookers who do have children, rarely take care of them. They are usually taken care of by a family member, the father, or they are wards of the state. They are often taken away from the stripper/hooker because she was an unfit mother, usually because of neglect or because she was a drug addict.
The movie "Taxi Driver" portrayed a hooker (played by Jody Foster) fairly accurately but if she was rescued in the end(I don't remember) that wouldn't last long in real life because they usually go back to their old habits of drugs and seeking out men that will abuse them. They are often addicted to the lifestyle.
I would be willing to bet that my stereotypes about hooker/strippers are accurate 95% of the time, yet the liberals in the media and in the arts, almost always portray them as innocent victims with a hard-luck story. The news story about a stripper/hooker that took to "that life" because of the high price of gas is preposterous, but it is not inconsistent that a stripper/hooker would make up that type of excuse, they usually make up rationalizations for their bad behavior. If you research it further, it is likely that she has a criminal record for drugs, prostitution, shoplifting and trespassing. It is also likely that she has a record with the DCFS (department of children and family services). Of course it is possible that she is part of the small minority that doesn't fit that mold, but I do not think that the TV stations budget would be big enough to sift through hundreds of hooker/strippers until they found the right one to fit their template.
