Boston Globe: Obama Afraid of Muslims Because of New 'Red Scare'

Photo of Warner Todd Huston.

Derrick Z. Jackson of the Boston Globe has done it again. Now, usually Z is one of those columnists that is sure every white American is a racist and many of his columns are based on that assumption, but it looks like he is branching out from his normal black/white identity politics angle and adding a new twist to his column. You see, Z has just discovered that whites don't hate only blacks, they hate Muslims too. How inclusive, eh?

Even more ridiculously, Z imagines that white Muslim haters in "red states" are forcing Barack Obama to distance himself from his Muslim background. In fact, according to Z, Islam is the victim of white America's newest "red scare" and Obama is feeling the heat because of that undue hatred. It all means we are "Holding Muslims at arm's length" to Derrick Z. Jackson.

I wonder where Z was on 9/11?

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Anyway, Z's latest Globe column lays into Barack Hussein Obama (yes, Z uses Obama's middle name here) chastising the candidate of change for turning his back on his Muslim heritage. Z is upset that Obama has pushed away Muslim assistance with his campaign and is incensed that Barack has taken pains to refute the Barack-is-a-Muslim line of attack.

I WISH Barack Obama were a Muslim. Better that than having supercilious staffers whisk women in Islamic head scarves out of photo-ops. Better that than telling Representative Keith Ellison of Minnesota, the nation's first Muslim congressman, not to come help Obama in Iowa and North Carolina.

Better that than wooing red states by wobbling before the modern equivalent of the Red Scare. In his year-and-a-half-long run for president, Obama has visited churches and synagogues, but no mosque. This has the musty feel of light-skinned African-Americans passing for white, paranoid over daylight visits from dark-skinned relatives.

"Red Scare"? Again, where was Z on 9/11? Did he miss that little fracas in New York? What "scare" is there in a world wide attack on the west by radical Islam? Hundreds of thousands of people around the world have been murdered by Islamists, Z. How is that just a "scare"?

And, need we remind you Mr. Jackson, that the "Red Scare" itself was no mere pointless jeremaid? Once the Soviet Union fell and its archives came into public scrutiny, it was proven that the Commies had, indeed, infiltrated all levels of the Federal government and had intended to upend our country through sabotage in high places. Presidents from FDR to JFK were surrounded by Soviet agents, so continuing to pretend that the "Red Scare" was merely an artifice for wild-eyed American fascist, rightists to control the country is an idea long shown to be but leftist trope. It was not just paranoia. The Reds really were out to destroy us from within.

Z does cut Barack Hussein Obama some slack. He says it's "understandable" that Obama feels a bit wary about Islam because "Political woodpeckers hammer falsehoods from the right." But, Jackson still feels that Obama is somehow going too far in his desire set his religious record straight.

...Obama's "Fight the Smears" part of his website has some Muslims feeling betrayed by an over-the-top effort to denounce every Obama-is-a-Muslim claim as a "lie" and saying, "Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised a Muslim, and is a committed Christian." How about something like, "Senator Obama is a Christian who, having lived in the world's largest Muslim country [Indonesia], having traveled in Pakistan and having many Muslim friends, appreciates American pluralism like no other candidate in US history"?

What, exactly, is wrong with a candidate trying to make clear where he stands on something? In fact, this is the ONLY issue that Obama has not nuanced his way through to date. This is the only issue that Obama has stood firm on. The man does not want to be considered a Muslim. PERIOD!

Of course, it doesn't seem to matter to Derrick Z. Jackson that there is not one shred of evidence that Obama ever really embraced his Father's religion. I have to stick up for Barack on this one. All evidence says that he was an indifferent student of Islam as a child and once he turned away from Islam he never really looked back, embracing Christianity instead. Now, one can doubt Obama's sincerity on any religion, of course. It is easy to imagine that Obama only turned to Christianity to help along his political ambitions... but who can truly say what's in a man's heart?

The facts, the evidence, the history, though, say that Barack Obama never seriously considered accepting Islam into his life. So, for columnists like Z to get all upset that Obama has insisted that people understand where he stands on religion is a bit contrived to say the least.

But, Jackson's real message here is not Obama. He may be a bit miffed at him, yes, but Jackson's main point is that we eeeevil Americans are too mean to Muslims.

A lot of Muslims are waiting because, seven years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, an undercurrent of suspicion remains. In the 2007 Pew survey, a third of Muslim Americans said that within the last year, they had either been treated with suspicion, called offensive names, profiled by police, or even attacked. Kaleem, a graduate of MIT, said he sometimes is asked during grant proposals how radical his group is.

Actually, this part is sort of humorous in the sense of Jackson’s lack of introspection. He says that we should get over 9/11 because it was 7 year ago? I see. Well, civil rights was passed 44 years ago and slavery was ended over 140 years ago, yet Mr. Jackson is still all upset over those little things. Can’t you just get over it, Mr. Jackson?

Now, it might help us to get over it and to feel that American Muslims belong standing beside the rest of us if Muslims in America would speak out loudly and continuously against their radical brethren. But all too often they remain silent against the radicalism of their own as they point fingers at Americans. It’s a bit hard for us to get over it when it doesn’t seem like too many of them even feel that their fellows did anything wrong that fateful day.

In any case, what we have here is just one more excuse for Derrick Z. Jackson to inform us all that white Americans are racists.

Warner, the point that you

Warner, the point that you missed, or may have missed, is that this writer is saying that Obama is distancing himself from Muslims because of fear of losing votes. Now that is courageous leadership, not to mention, taking a principled stand against the darkness of bigotry! Yeah, he's ready for the Oval Orifice.

There's that too

I didn't focus on that, but you're right. (my pieces are long enough without adding even more to them! Ha, ha)

Damn, had to look up

Damn, had to look up "jeremaid."  Always an education.

You know, I wondered if that word was too out there. Funny thing is, it is used so little anymore that even spell check didn't know what the heck I was talking about!!

Ha, ha.

Truth is I read too much from 19th century books.

The Red Scare

Ahh, the Red Scare label. How well I remember that false charge of fear mongering.

Back in 1986, when I was stationed in Germany as a part of NATO, I had a discussion with a German citizen about the "Red Scare." The German asked me why it was necessary to have so many "foreign troops" on German soil and claimed that it was all a "Red Scare" tactic used by Americans in order for us to impose our will upon the German people. I pointed out that the Soviet Union had over 10,000 tanks that are poised to roll across the Fulda Gap and spearhead a military invasion of West Germany, as well as the rest of West Europe, and that we were there to make sure this wouldn't happen. The German replied that Soviets had no designs to expand their territory by armed invasion and that we had noting to fear from them. I responded: "Nothing to fear? I'm sure the Afghani people probably felt the same way about the Soviets in the 70's and look how THAT turned out!" The German stopped talking to me and left. His friends, on the other hand, thanked me for defending them from invasion by the Soviets and told me that they had no doubt that we were the only ones preventing another war in Europe. I was quite touched by that.

Cobraman, I had a similar

Cobraman, I had a similar occasion in Germany in 1987 near the closed Brandenburg gate in Berlin.  A young unwashed man of ayear or so younger than me began telling me the Sov's had no designs on German soil.

I was exasperated, as you could plainly see the Wall about a hundred feet from me. But he was just repeating the latest buzzphrase he had learned in the beergardens.

→ Visit to East Berlin

In 1972 our Army Company visited East Berlin.  It was as though travelling from living color to black and white.  By this I mean everything was literally black, brown or white with not a splash of color.

Only children dared look up at us, grownups would not.  Only children smiled at all, grownups would not.

I was 21 and will never forget those sights.

Cool arrow.  Yeah, I

Cool arrow.

Yeah, I went across in 1987, having to wear my Class-A uniform.  THe city of West Berlin was largely rbuilt using brick and is a"Beautiful brick red color" as well as just plain beautiful and lively on the Kurfursterdam strasse.

East Berlin was rebuilt using poor grade cement imported from Mother Russia and was certainly grey, but also disintegrating before your eyes.  Most buildings had scaffolding permanently installed around them to allow for almost continusous patching of the flaking concrete.

I went to a store to purchase anything to take home as a souvenir and discovered something that confounded me.  At the Zeiss Optical store near Checkpoint Charlie they had store with about as much space as one would expect to see in a grade school classroom, but it was largely empty and the murchandise for sale was only contained in two glass cases at the far end.  Each case contained one example of each piece of murchandise and lets just say that the store only had about five seperate items on display.

Three women stood side by side behind the cases watching my every move.

There was a decent pair of Binoculars in the one case and I told the first lady that I wished to purchase them.  She then wrote down the price on a sheet on paper and handed it somewhat ceremoniously to the second woman who then glanced at me and asked me for the east german money to pay for it.  East German money being made of poor grade tablet paper and aluminum coins, I handed it to her very gingerly to prevent it from disintegrating or the coins from tearing.

The second woman then wrote out a short note on a piece of paper and handed it to the third woman standing beside her who upon reading it handed me the binoculars.

I was dumbstruck by the whole event.  It was not until I was about a hundred yards away that it sunk in that the communists had acheived 100% employment, but that no one really DID anything.

Amazing stories.

I was in Germany visiting friends we'd met at Riley when the wall came down and the East Germans poured into the West.

It was absolutely stunning...tiny little cars packed to the rafters, matresses on the roofs...and when they'd see the U.S. plates on our car, huge smiles and waves.  I'll never forget that, either.

The point I think you both missed ...

... is that the self-righteous and ridiculous "Z" was inventing an excuse for Obama's hajib freakout.  Obama's not bigoted, you see, he LOVES Muslims, as they are a part of Everybody, and he loves Everybody.  UNITY, don't you know.

What Obama was doing was behaving preemptively to avoid a problem with those bigots in the red states.  Not just pandering, but pandering with a purpose.

Deranged we can all believe in.

a bunch of hooey

"only 58 percent of Americans think Obama is a Christian"

I don't think he's Christian because I don't think the theology of his church is Christian.  It's racial and political, and he was probably only amember for the purpose of getting votes anyway.

And I do hold muslims at arms length because I've taken a look at mainstream Islamic tafsir and fiqh, and I don't like it one bit.  I work with Muslims no problem, but if they are devout, they have a problem with me right from the get go, so why pretend everything is all buddy-buddy.

A few things

1) Not to put too fine a point on it, but it doesn't matter what poll or what opinion exists about Obama's supposed Christianity.  He's gone out of his way to demonstrate that he is not, and never has been, a Christian.  By his own words, he has advanced the discussion past poll numbers and personal perceptions.  When someone insists "I am a Christian," and in the next sentence denies the salvific exclusivity of Jesus Christ, that someone is not a Christian.

2) The analogy between Islam and Communism is, at its core, an excellent one.  Islam is, contrary to popular perception, not a religious system, but a governmental system with world domination at its heart.

3) Just as there are nominal Christians (Obama being a prime example), so are there MINOs (Muslims In Name Only).  MINOs can be pleasant people, but folks who take Islam seriously are problems waiting to happen.

Hypocrite alert

one of those columnists that is sure every white American is a racist

Mr. Jackson says that seven years after Sept. 11 there is still an undercurrent of suspicion toward Muslims

With an air of moral superiority He seems to be scolding whites for not getting over their suspicions and claiming whites are exhibiting intolerant behavior toward Muslims.

How long ago was slavery ended? I think it was longer than 7 years ago and yet he still is suspicious and intolerant toward whites.

He said Obama should take a more positive approach toward Muslims and learn to live more comfortably with Muslims.

What about Mr. Jackson taking a more positive approach and learn to live more comfortably with whites.

"Red Scare" ... What A Pathetic Fascist.

No sir Z being a "whitey" I don't "hate" muslims. I HATE ISLAMIC TERRORISTS AND THEIR APOLOGISTS.

Being that my family is more of a rainbow coalition than Jesse Jackson or Barrack Hussein Obama's entire living family combined, I can only conclude; most Africken American's who hail from Chicago, Boston and Detroit are A--holes.

This has the musty feel of

This has the musty feel of light-skinned African-Americans passing for white, paranoid over daylight visits from dark-skinned relatives.

OK....  so if obama is half black and half white but because his skin color allows him to 'choose' to be a 'black' person doesn't it hold that a person of mixed racial background that is light skinned enough to pass as a white person and if they choose to be 'white' aren't they just as much a 'white' person as obama is a 'black' person?

You know what...I am just

You know what...I am just so tired of people like Derrick Z.... everyday we hear this on the msm...I am weary of the Muslim crap too...they are infiltrating us to take over...

Simple as that..we aren't going to wake up until it is too late.

Who cares what this liberal tool says or thinks?

Why do we fall all over ourselves trying to prove to these liberal idiots that we are or are not racists?  That we like or don't like Muslims?  Who cares what they think?  Quit playing their game and dancing to their tunes?  We continue to fight this fight on their terms.  They keep making stupid accusations and we continue to cite logic that we are not racists.

It's like my mother told me about my first wife, "you're never going to make her happy, so why do you keep trying so hard?"

Let liberals say and think what they want.  Deep down they know they're wrong.  Besides, a liberal has not paid my house payment yet.

What I find incessantly

What I find incessantly hysterical about being a racist white guy Republican is talking to a friend who is an Obama's Witness and how he feels the need to remind me Obama's black. Yet again, I never used that as criteria for liking or disliking the guy, or anyone else for that matter. To spare myself the sermon to chide me for my racist ways (you know, the guy who couldn't care less about Obama's skin color), I just say I don't like the guy because he's an empty suit, borderline communist.

An interesting side note with this same Obama's Witness friend: we were having a very juvenile conversation about attractive actresses in Hollywood. I had mentioned that Sandra Bullock and Ashley Judd were always my two favorites and Halle Berry was in the top five. He told me he didn't think Halle Berry was the least bit attractive. Why, you ask? She's black.

How I live with my racist ways will forever be a mystery.

Red scare? What about Black scare?

[Self-appointed media hate committee hearings]

Black scare? Ask family of Eve Carson at UNC about it?

The MSM and black "leaders" never seem to take into consideration that there might just be a reason why whites are wary of certain groups.  9/11 covers the muslims.  This blog covers the blacks.

You're just not getting it

Those "Black leaders" would argue that Whites commit crime against Blacks every day - it's just institutionalized. You know, "The Man is holding me down!"

Individual acts of violence by Blacks perpetrated against Whites are a form of rebellion. They are all modern day Nat Turners.
