SPJ Suggests 'Omitting Race' in Crime Reporting

The Society of Professional Journalists has decided that it is best to leave a suspect's race out of crime reporting except for "extraordinary" reasons. Of course, to the SPJ, "good reporting" means race info in a story about crime isn't "useful to people in the community" even if the race of a suspect is part of a police report apparently. Despite their claim that they aren't toeing the PC line, their explanation is filled with just the sort of reasoning based on PC thinking -- one of which is that all whites are racists.

Some of you may remember the story in September of 2007 when the Sacramento Bee announced that they were revisiting their policy of including race in their crime stories. A particularly gruesome crime occurred that brought the Bee to revisit their policy when they reported on the suspect leaving out race while Internet reporting as well as the Bee's own comments section on their internet posting of the story reported the race of the suspect anyway.

SPJ continues, however, to come down on the side of leaving the race of a suspect out of crime reporting. I find their reasons, though, less than convincing. In fact, their concerns are so broad as to make all reporting on every issue untenable if applied farther than just race in crime reporting.

The SPJ says that whites will always assume that "an object in a black man’s hand" is "a weapon," seeming to accept the premise that all whites are racists. They point out that racial intermarriage and breeding makes skin color and race impossible to determine. They say that Hispanics can look black and they bring up the unreliability of the human memory. All these, they say, are reasons never to mention the race of a suspect in a crime story. "Fuzziness" and that "memory is delicate, and especially so when it comes to emotional situations, as well as cross-racial descriptions" seems to be enough for the SPJ to exclude race in crime reporting.

It is absolutely a fact that the human memory can be vague and unreliable. Part of good police work is to record the testimony of more than just one witness if at all possible. Still, however, it seems a bit odd for a paper not to report the information that the police reports contain. In fact, there is only one prevailing reason to leave it out and the SPJ clearly assumes the argument.

When police and the community are blinded by ideas about what a particular race looks like, whole groups suffer from suspicion and the actual culprit can escape.

So, as far as the SPJ is concerned PC "social" concerns are more important than reporting the information of a crime. Instead of actually reporting all available facts, the SPJ is saying that a news source should be more about having greater societal concerns in their work and that the "news" should be written less to report the facts and more to engage in the social "sciences." Also, while they claim not to be bowing to PCism, it seems like every one of their reasons seem based on PC principles.

This raises a whole different concern: what is the news for? Is the news for presenting the facts of current events, or is the news an avenue for social engineering?

Obviously, the SPJ imagines for "professional journalists" a far greater role than just reporting the news. In fact, the SPJ imagines that they should be the arbiters of what people should be allowed to be exposed to. This seems to me to be a far different role than what any normal person would assume a reporter's role would be. And, can we assume that the average journalist is trained enough in the social sciences to be able to fulfill this expanded role the SPJ imagines for all journalists? Do journalists have the same training as sociologists? I think not.

They certainly think an awful lot of themselves, don't they?

The SPJ writer of this piece, by the way, seems to visit the subject of race often. Apparently it's a big concern of hers as the search option at SPJ shows many of her articles are based on racial and gender concerns.

So, what do you think? Should a journalist be responsible for writing about the facts or should they be concerned with deciding what is best for society?

Would it also be good journalism to omit surveillance camera photographs or sketches which would tend to show a supsects race? Should an exception be made for rapists of feminists?

Sarc off

lol

That is what it has come down to.

Well, this is easy

Well, this is easy. I will now assume all criminals are black until proven otherwise. Why should I assume any difference? Statistics prove that black men are 9 times more likely than whites to commit violent crimes. I will assume this is the case, and act accordingly.

FOX (Fair and Balanced) News Update

Scott - Your post reminded me of an email I received not long ago --

In response to a number of complaints that FOX doesn't show enough Black and Hispanic people on the network, FOX has announced that they will now air "America's Most Wanted" twice a week.

Ha!  Thanks for the

Ha!  Thanks for the smile!

Scott... Thank you...you

Scott...

Thank you...you said it all.

I am so tired of this all...this has been happening more and more in the msm too...they have NO problem showing the white person immediately, if we do not see a picture when it is addressed to the urgent story you can be sure the person is most likely black..this is what the msm is doing all over the place anymore.

It is outrageous...crime is crime, show the person, describe the description given who gives a rats rear if it can save a persons life.

Our nation is going down the drain if we keep this up.

Btw...as an aside, I just saw a news story about the blacks and mexicans in a high school from my home state in Calif. having major fighting, sounds like gangs within the school, over 600 students involved, many cops having to go to the scene...I cannot beieve what has happened to my state let alone all over this country...and this is a school, a place where you used to show respect and learn...not anymore.

Nothing but sorrow do I see everywhere at times.

LOL. . .  Kind of like

LOL. . .  Kind of like leaving out the big 'D' when it involves a Democrat; but plastering 'R', Republican, and GOP when it involves a Republican.  Leftwing media bias?   What bias :-)

PCism

anneftx

This is absurd on the face and back of it. If someone robs a bank or carjacks a person, if the police want help in i.d.ing the suspect leaving race out of the equation is ridiculous.

Guess I'm a person of undetermined race, sex and identity. Excuse me while I go hold up the local liquor store.

Speculation Need Not Apply

"Should a journalist be responsible for writing about the facts or should they be concerned with deciding what is best for society?"

Journalists (term used loosely) certainly had no self-imposed restraint in speculating that the DC sniper(s) was a white middle class man.

Screw Demograpgihics, Useless Dactoids

18% of the population commits 60% of the crimes, 80% of the murders.

Who needs to know about useless facts employed only to inflame?

Unless it's to confirm the Guvmint invented Aids to destroy a certain ethbic group - then it's "impotant."

Twain said "There's lies, damnable lies and then there's statistics."

(sarcasm off)

Sometimes, race is simply part of the story

As this sad case, among others shows all too well, even as their obvious antilibertarian bias keeps the "mainstream" media from noticing OBVIOUS racial angles on crime stats. There's a disparity, and even though it's obviously a result of policy, an alien could read the "mainstream" biased media and see our society's racial disparities as the result of old newsletters or nutty preachers.

Perhaps the SPJ should concentrate on getting members to reveal MORE information -- like, for example, the crook's political party in scandal stories -- rather than less. One would think a society of "professional" journalists would notice the beating we've unleashed on what should and could be a dead horse by now. If only these people would get over their minor-racist obsession, they might do some actual journalism.
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

Maybe groups such as the

Maybe groups such as the NAACP and La Raza as well as people like Jackson and Sharpton should work to *decrease* crimes committed by hispanics and blacks rather than *focus* on so-called racism.  Maybe racism would decrease if black and hispanic crime decreased?  Wow, there's a thought!!

MostlyModerate

Mostly, blacks don't want to hear that they are the blame of their situation. That would put Jesse the Extortionist and that other idiot Sharpton the Tax Cheat out of business. It is much more profitable to blame whitey and "racism" for all their troubles in cooperation with the useful idiots in the MSM.

Don't Even Report The Crime

Hell, don't even report the crime, remember you might be offending the criminal. don't they have rights too?  Don't  report the city because it will give the city a bad image and for God's sake don't report the gender of the criminal or the victim.

Lately I feel like a bobblehead doll at some of the crap the PC police try to pull.

"Don't let the bastards grind you down."

Red

Politicians = Criminals

If  you read a story about a criminal politician and no party in mentioned. 100% of the time it's a democrat.

If you read a story about any type criminal and it doesn't mention race, can we assume that it's a black 100% of the time. Most of the time smart media whores aren't smart at all.

Old, Retired and glad of it.

Why not just

say that whatever they did isn`t really a crime because they are members of an oppressed minority, more sinned against than sinning ( barf!) - that is, UNLESS the perpetrator is caucasian?

In what passes for a  newspaper locally -  there are 3 of `em , one based in each of 3 towns approx 40 mi apart  - are all owned and run by one ultra - liberal family -  the suspect`s race is NEVER mentioned , yet they  do publish photos of the suspect(s) BUT only if they are white, some of us nasty ole folks kinda figure if only a name is given - well, it`s politically incorrect, I guess - but maybe you`ll be able figure it out for yourself.

I remember hearing somebody say, many years ago, that the role of the journalist was to COMFORT the afflicted and to AFFLICT

the comfortable! Seems to me journalists today AFFLICT just about everybody  that`s decent and COMFORT the people who ought to be locked up!

Omissions already in place where I live

On the local news (TV and print) where I live, if there is a bank robbery, abduction, or the like, they will report it something like this:  The suspect is described as 6 foot 2 inches, mid-30's, wearing jeans and a t-shirt, driving a black SUV.

If I was related to the victim of crime and it was reported like this, I would hit the roof.

E-e-e-vil whites

It's necessary to omit race from crime reports because, as we all know, whites are all prejudiced and will hate minorities even more if they are identified.  After all, whites are the only race to ever practice slavery and would enslave minorities in a heartbeat given a chance.  Admitting that some minority members commit crimes would give whites the excuse they need.  Besides, whites shoot minorities full of drugs and AIDS, so minorities can hardly be expected to control themselves.

Does that about sum it up?

(sarcasm off)

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

1-Adam-12

I wonder what "special circumstances" they mean? Like a police press conference or a recording of the 911 call, both of which the MSM LOVES to use as often as possible.

I wonder how long before the police adopt this strategy as well?

"1Adam12, see the black woman, ahh, I mean African-American person, about an armed robbery, ahh, I mean unlawful acquisition of personal property by a gang, ahh, I mean gathering, of ahh, description redacted due to cultural sensitivity"

(on edit: sorry, I repeat myself repeat myself)

To really categorize crime...

I suggest that all reports, including print, radio and TV include a persons race, gender and political affiliation.

Except in the case of Michael Jackson when only 1 of the 3 is truley known.

»→ WTH, get real!

If news media decided to report the race of violent offenders, eventually somebody besides Walter E. Williams (column 04/23/08) might be tempted to report the following statistics:

"According to Bureau of Justice statistics, between 1976 and 2005, while 13 percent of the population, blacks committed over 52 percent of the nation's homicides and were 46 percent of the homicide victims. Ninety-four percent of black homicide victims had a black person as their murderer."

Why would we possibly want the facts to challenge Barry and Michele's message of white devils.

Better the devil you know than the devil you don't.  I guess.

How much more irrelevant can...

How much more irrelevant can the "professional journalists" become? I suppose they could adopt the French approach by ignoring the race-ethnicity-religious aspect of all news stories. The French simply don't label their maraudering Muslim youths by what they are--Muslim youths; they call them disaffected youths or something. Besides, the Muslim youths in France always stop burning the cars--after they have burned all they can find. The SPJ will no doubt continue with their delusional approach to the news reporting. A rose by any other name.. and all of that. How much worse can they make their agenda driven drivel? We'll see.

Unfair double standard

Whenever a White is accused of committing a crime against a Black the media will ALWAYS tell us the races. They NEVER mention the races when the races are reversed. So this suggestion is ridiculous.
