According to The Hollywood Reporter, film director Paul Verhoeven is soon to release a book that is claimed to be a new "biography" of Jesus Christ. In this new publication, Verhoeven feels that he successfully proves that Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, was raped by a Roman soldier during the Jewish uprising in Galilee and the boy Jesus was the result of that attack. No virgin birth for Christ, but instead a rape.
Verhoeven is best known as the director of the films "Basic Instinct," the Arnold Schwarzenegger film "Total Recall," as well as the spectacular flop "Showgirls." The Dutch director reports that he's had a "lifelong ambition" to make a movie about Jesus and hopes this book will spur interest in his film ideas. Verhoeven spent 20 years writing the tome and this has led Catholic League President Bill Donohue to scoff at the claims as being overwrought and unproven even with 20 years of research. Donohue says they are "laughable" claims and wonders why 20 years of research only led to a claim that Christ is "probably" descended from a rapist.
"Here we go again with idle speculation grounded in absolutely nothing," Donohue told FOXNews.com. "He has no empirical evidence to support his claim, which is why they say 'may have.'"
"He's been working 20 years trying to sell this argument and hasn't come up with anything. This won't make a dent with Christians, nor with scholars somewhat wary of the biblical account. It's a European version of Hollywood. He should go back to Sharon Stone's legs."
Verhoeven has been known to haunt several conferences and seminars, one called The Jesus Seminar, that have been put on since the 1980's that call into question Jesus' divinity and the legitimacy of any miracles traditionally connected to him.
As Donohue told FoxNews:
"The Jesus Seminar was big in the '80s and somewhat in the '90s," Donohue said. "They have been very controversial in challenging the accepted biblical account of Jesus. The goal is to question the divinity of Christ -- to say he was nothing but a happy carpenter who worked at Lowe's or Home Depot."
But the claims that Jesus was the product of a Roman rapist is not new and have been around since the 1st or 2nd century. So, Verhoeven's claims are hardly new. In fact, this old-news aspect of this Jesus claim causes one to more easily accept the idea that the film world has run out of new ideas. And they aren't just looking to some other country or a 20-year-old TV show to do a re-make on, now they're reaching back centuries!

Ancient news actually.
April 28, 2008 - 14:12 ET by Davester65It goes back further than that. The Romans themselves were claiming this way back in the 1st century (they said seduced rather than raped) as a way of both bringing Jesus down and justifying his growing popularity by saying he was at least half-Roman, not just some lowly trademan from a conquered race. What's-his-face should be sued for plaigerizing an ancient Roman propagandist.

Bal is right about Black Book but
April 24, 2008 - 12:34 ET by Dee BunkI'm not so sure about the attention part.
I think most people who bash Jesus do so out of fear. They fear that they could be wrong and so they need others to agree and convert to feel better. They attack because they know they can do it with impunity. They won't be killed like the Dutch filmmaker who dared to make a film critical of radical Islam and they won't be harassed internationally like the Dutch politician who made the film against radical Islam.
People who make films against radical Islam are scared to, but they are afraid of being forced to accept a religion they disagree with or die whereas the Christian/Jesus bashers fear only the comfort that others get from religion. There have not been any large groups of Christians for many years who have tried to force their religion on people with threats of violence. They don't even threaten violence on people who openly insult it.
I have enjoyed Verhoven's films in the past, especially Black Book and Total Recall, but this is enough to make me not want to watch him again. He's a weak cowardly bully.

Another Twisted Hollywood Mind
April 23, 2008 - 22:21 ET by Gothampc"But how do you make the leap to a Roman rapist?"
Because a rape scene in a movie will play better. It's guaranteed 20 minutes of sex and violence rolled into one. It's the sick fantasy of this director that he can't play out in real life.
But the divinity of Jesus has always been questioned. The people of Jesus' day accused Mary of fornication.
"Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, [even] God." John 8:41
The bigger question is what will be the response of secular humanist Jews like Abe Foxman? Will they scream that it will cause anti-semitism like they did with Mel Gibson's The Passion or will they praise the director for opening an intelligent discussion?

Well, I'm bored today, so I
April 24, 2008 - 01:14 ET by CortillaenWell, I'm bored today, so I guess there's nothing to do but poke fun at an oh-so-compassionate lefty. In all seriousness, does the sheer magnitude of their hypocrisy (not to mention irrational hatred) even occur to some of these people? Apparently not "Mark", a poster on this article, which you may have already read thanks to the link in this story. Shortly after my amused jab at everyone who thinks Christians and Muslims are basically the same, Mark posted this: "Xtians [Christians to those of us who don't much care for disrespecting the title] are simply socially accepted retards, who believe in a magical man in the sky, and fellate little boys." Yep, I'm feeling that lefty love alright... wait, that actually feels more like burning hatred. Meh.
It's occurred to me recently that the sort of hatred we regularly see directed at Christians generally stems from a single source: Unwillingness to be obedient, pride, whatever you want to call it. You see, when you get right down to it, Christianity is the religion of choice. Humanity's raison d'etre is choice; free will. More than that, choice brought about the introduction of sin, and a choice is offered to be saved from it. Through and through, Christianity is all about choice. Have some Christian institutions restricted and even persecuted choice? Oh yeah. However, losing the way doesn't mean the way isn't there; it just means you're lost. Lights tend to help with that sort of thing... Hey, somebody ought to make some parables or something about that! Heh, heh.
Anyhow, back to the original point: Obedience. See, while Christianity is all about choices, the most important one, salvation, involves a humble submission and obedience to God. It involves asking for help. This does not go over well with a lot of people. Free will has this annoying habit of encouraging independence, something rather contrary to the whole, asking-for-help thing. Annoying, huh? Of course, that's the point: Who's willing to sacrifice their pride, and, more importantly, help others through the same thing?
Hm, I got a bit off topic again... I'll just blame my OCTD (Obsessive-Compulsive Thinking Disorder). No, I don't think such a thing really exists, but I do have an annoying habit of entertaining every thought that pops into my head, including this one. Right, getting back on track now... Ever seen a kid get told by his parent that he can't do something on his own? What usually happens next? The kid gets mad. Then, when he thinks Mom and Dad aren't watching, he tries to do it on his own and falls flat on his face. This, of course, makes him even madder. So he tries again and again, with predictable results. Eventually, some will admit they can't hack it on their own and ask for help. These would be the Christian sort. Unfortunately, some will give up, usually telling themselves something like, "It wasn't worth doing, anyway," but the anger and resentment are still there, ready to lash out the moment the kid who got help mentions it. These would be those folks we all know, the ones with that seething hatred and resentment for Christianity in general and Christians in particular, usually masked behind disdain.
Not that any of this is in any way new or unexpected. The true ideas of Christianity have faced persecution even before its inception, sometimes even from within the churches, and these days are no different. Still, understanding what makes these people tick (and hate) is a big step towards dealing with them. Oh, and poking fun at the truly intractable ones is a good way to relieve terminal boredom. Sometimes a good slap in the face helps them get a clue, too.

Career Gamble?
April 24, 2008 - 01:54 ET by SquonkamaticPaul Verhoevan has made some fabulous films -- "Robocop" and "Total Recall" not among the least -- but he hasn't had a genuine populist hit since "Starship Troopers" in what, 1997, and has in fact become synonymous with bad movies. After eleven years and a couple of disappointing flops ("Hollow Man", the recent "Black Book") not to mention the megabomb "Showgirls" which earned him a place in the Edward D. Wood School of Advanced Bad Filmmaking for all time he may miss hearing his name in the news. I sense some twilight career effort here to try and stay relevant by pushing a few buttons, and likely trying to do so by creating an ironic juxtaposition against the Dutch cultural ban on anti-Muslim films. He's going straight for the jugular of Christianity in the same way that he went straight for the jugular of good taste with such epics in applied sleaze as "Basic Instinct", "Showgirls" and "Starship Troopers", which I happen to think is one of the most absurdly entertaining movies ever made.
One wishes he would avoid such ideological waters as trying to set religion on his ear to get some buzz back and stick to making movies with stuff getting blowed up real good. He was at one point one of the hottest "oustider Hollywood" directors and maybe this is just his idea of trying to get some zing associated with his name again, though I am sure he really means it too, which is disappointing. Probably had a revelation in the hash bar one night after a few too many gravity bongs of Dutch weed, deciding that if Mary never identifed the father of her son then she must have had some reason to hush it up. I've come up with some dumb, tasteless ideas when in that kind of a state as well but usually keep them to myself. It's disappointing that he is responding to his inner typical liberal media zeal for arriving at the worst possible conclusion based on the flimsiest of evidence, then promptly announcing it to the world with a bullhorn just to rile people up. I still admire him as a filmmaker but this is just plain stupid.

I Can't Say I'm Suprised...
April 24, 2008 - 22:23 ET by The7SticksWhile I certainly am no fan of Catholicism (as you could tell from earlier hostile posts I've done), I do feel somewhat disheartened, if not offended, when someone goes after Jesus with false accusations. I suppose, though, I can guess why...
1.) Paul Verhoven, according to some articles I've read about him, tries to make films that will shock people with shock value (i.e. the ultra-violence in Robocop, the concept of an invisible rapist in Hollow Man, etc...) This is just an example of that kind of shock value.
2.) Some peoples' attacks on Jesus are more of a residual attack against Christianity or Catholicism, which undeniably, they despise because they don't like being normal, which is safe to say that Christians do like, which is being normal. They can't stand the fact that there has to be standards and morals practiced in the public square or in the government (i.e. abortion, gay marriage, etc...) so they have to take there anger out on what they believe is the root problem: Jesus Christ.
3.) Some people are just afraid that Christianity may be right, that there might be a Judgment Day, and by criticizing the existence or divinity of Jesus, they are just insulating themselves from the possibility of being wrong about being judged on their sins.
Since I am a secular Jew, I don't believe in the concept of Hell. I do, however, have the belief that Jesus was a man who has divinity and that he walked the Earth to save the souls of many who needed saving. My mother, who herself was a secular Christian, always kept pictures of Jesus around her because she loved him so much and wished for him to get rid of the pain she suffered. Since she passed away a couple years ago, I do have a feverent belief that Jesus did just that for her, and now she's one with the angels. I just feel disheartened that some people are just so afraid of being judged that they recklessly judge others in the process without any tact at all.
