Houston Chron: Obama Flag Pin Question 'Planted from the Right'

Houston Chronicle blogger Bob Cavnar needs to take some time off, or lay off the caffeine, or maybe someone should gently tell him that the black helicopters aren't following him after all. Whatever the case, Cavnar used his April 19th posting to go off on a wild eyed rant that is so twisted that it ends up blaming Republicans and Mickey Mouse for the fact that Barack Obama isn't patriotic enough to wear an American flag lapel pin! This is just another hilarious example of the overheated far left's panty bunching extravaganza that we've seen since the ABC debate aired.

During the last Democratic presidential debate, a woman from Pennsylvania was shown on videotape pointing out that Barack Obama refuses to wear an American flag lapel pin unlike most of the other candidates who do from time to time and Cavnar has decided that some dark, Obama hating conspiracy at ABC pushed this woman into the debate.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Here was her question at the ABC debate:

Senator Obama, I have a question, and I want to know if you believe in the American flag. I am not questioning your patriotism, but all our servicemen, policemen and EMS wear the flag. I want to know why you don't.

As Cavnar points out, the woman, Pennsylvanian Nash McCabe, was quoted as concerned about that very question by The New York Times on April 4th. So, because this woman's point against Obama was known before the debate, Cavnar claims that McCabe being presented as a "typical voter" by ABC is somehow a lie.

Cavnar also points out that Philadelphia Daily News columnist Will Bunch agrees that McCabe's question was unfair and more proof of the "travesty of a mockery of a sham of a presidential debate" that ABC perpetrated on the nation. Bunch was just as peeved as Cavnar and said, "So Nash McCabe wasn't located at random at all. Instead, someone at ABC News decided that they wanted to go after Obama on the patriotism issue, and they actively sought a Pennsylvanian who they knew wanted to bring it up."

But, it all amounts to a big "so what?" Did ABC ever SAY that McCabe was chosen at random? No would be the answer to that. Both the Houston Chronicle's Cavnar and the Philly Daily News' Bunch set up a nice strawman that they could then easily knock down. Of course, it is true that ABC sought out this woman and that she wasn't found "at random," but I'm not aware that anyone at ABC DID say she was found by accident in the first place.

ABC did look for this woman to pose this question, without question. But it was not an ABC hit job at all. It was a substantive question on an issue that Obama himself made into an issue. Cavnar and Bunch's absurd claims of ABC's malfeasance aside, it was Obama himself that we can blame for the lapel flag issue.

Americans are interested in why Obama won’t wear his American flag pin. It’s just that simple.

Here was Charlie Gibson's follow up to McCabe's video taped question:

Just to add to that, I noticed you put one on yesterday. But you've talked about this before, but it comes up again and again when we talk to voters. And, as you may know, it is all over the Internet.

And it's something of a theme that Senators Clinton and McCain's advisers agree could give you a major vulnerability if you're the candidate in November.

How do you convince Democrats that this would not be a vulnerability?

So, yes, this was ABC's specific goal, to get at this question. McCabe's video tapped question was not random and was not supposed to be.

But, Cavnar especially goes off his nut on this business. Here is how he describes the situation...

So...ABC, owned by Disney, who benefits from Republican policies, decides to make the leading Democratic contender look bad. They get their two most prominent talking heads to "moderate" the debate to lend credibility, even though one of them owes everything he has to the Clintons. They then go after Obama with a few token challenges to Hillary, using planted questions from the right and a bitter woman in Pennsylvania to do their dirty work.

Hilarious! So, Disney and Republicans are at fault for Barack Obama's refusal to wear a flag lapel pin? And, even worse in Cavnar's eyes, George Stephanopoulos shouldn't have been allowed to be involved in the debate because he “owes everything to the Clintons"? I wonder if Cavnar ever doubted Stephanopoulos' ability to be an unbiased newsman when it was first announced years ago that he was becoming one? I'd bet no is the answer to that. Of course, now that Georgie is seemingly standing in the way of Cavnar's candidate, suddenly Stephanopoulos is not to be trusted!

But, as I said, this is all Barack Obama's fault in the first place, so the nutroots claims that ABC sandbagged the candidate of "change" is patently absurd. They have no one but Obama to blame for the whole mess. As Jake Tapper reminds us all, Obama is the one that made this a problem issue for his campaign.

Back in October Obama replied to a query of why he wasn't wearing the flag pin with this bit of tortured "logic":

"You know, the truth is that right after 9/11, I had a pin. Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq War, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security, I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest. Instead, I'm going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great, and hopefully that will be a testimony to my patriotism."

This Obama reply begs the question: do you not think, Mr. Obama, the country is great already? Do you think that only YOU can "tell the American people" what "will make this country great"? "Will" as in future tense, not "is" as in currently great?

Anyway, the whole point that the lefty whiners are attacking ABC over in this case can only be blamed on their favorite candidate. The whole lapel pin deal is Barack Obama's fault, not ABC's. As Tapper points out, "So…wasn't it Obama who made an issue out his not wearing a flag lapel pin?"

No, all we have is the conspiracy mongering of the far left upset that their candidate is finally being held to account for his many anti-American sentiments, sentiments that he has been given a pass for by the very MSM that the nutrooters are now attacking.

Taste of their own medicine

Did the Chronicle notice the lefty plants at Republican debates? And when did conservatives lose the right to challenge a Democrat candidate?

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Some were noticed: e.g. the

Some were noticed: e.g. the guy who asked about gays in the military; but in general they don't need "plants"...the moderators do a good job of hitting them with questions from the left point of view.

Wrong Gibson

WTH, don't you mean Charlie Gibson instead of John Gibson?

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Wait... maybe it was Mel

Wait... maybe it was Mel Gibson?

You lost me at Houston

You lost me at Houston Chronicle.  This fish wrap is a Hearst newspaper and is as Anti-American as any newspaper in the country. When the Houston Post went out of business I didn't pick up this terrible newspaper.

So a blogger from this paper is to be taken with a grain of salt.

True...

... but then again ANY reporter with the MSM must be taken with a "grain of salt" and if we so easily dismissed ALL the news... well, there would be no reason for Newsbusters!

Obama should relish that question

When you make a stand for something you believe in and somebody asks you why, you should be happy for the opportunity to explain.  Obama should know that this particular question will come up, like ones about why he doesn't put his hand over his heart when the National Anthem is played or whether his wife is "proud of [her] country."

He decided to make a statement with his actions and now his supporters are whining that nobody is allowed to question those actions.  If Obama had given a plausible reason for his eschewing the American flag, these professional whiners. . .I mean, journalists wouldn't have to cry foul.  The bottom line is, Obama can't explain why he freely chooses to forego minimally patriotic acts.

plants and lies

Wingnut ---Where is Hillery's flag pin????  This could have been a plant --like hillery has been proven to do in the recent past but I doubt it...ABC is afraid the plant might leak out but it could have been a suggestion from a supporter in the audience...I have seen this happen and used it in state politics.

Think the issue really is that it took so long to get to the real meat of what the voter is concerned about. The rest is just prejudice or fill for the media.

docb, Hillary is not the issue

The story is about how these "journalists" are calling it a right-wing plant.  My point was that Obama should actually relish the opportunity to explain this away.  Regardless of where the question came from, it is a statement that he chose to make.  Now that he is floundering to explain that action, his minions begin to point fingers and call names (kinda like you did).

To clear the air, let's point out the facts:

1)  Obama refuses to wear an American flag lapel pin

2)  Obama refuses to put his hand over his heart during the National Anthem

3)  Obama's minister, spiritual advisor, campaign advisor and friend is decidedly and unapologetically anti-Semitic, anti-White and anti-American

Bottom line:  Obama has a problem with the growing perception that he really does not like the US (his wife is proud of this country for the first time), the middle-class (who cling to guns and religion), or those not of the same skin color (he chose Wright as his spiritual advisor).  If these are truly weaknesses in his character and campaign he needs to address them forthrightly.  Therefore, he should relish the opportunity that having a national audience provided.

"The Issues" are only part of what makes a good President.

"Think the issue really is that it took so long to get to the real meat of what the voter is concerned about."

Who makes the determination as to what the voters are concerned about? Hillary? Obama? The MSM? No, we do. It's not up to the candidates to pick and choose which questions will be asked during a debate, that's up to the moderators and I hope that they continue to ask about more than "The Issues" that the candidates have already been talking about for months. I want, the hard, probing. personal questions that could tend to embarrass the candidates and will put pressure on them as this isn't just a question and answer period, it's a demonstration as to how each candidate will perform under the pressure of facing the unknown or unpopular aspects of international politics.

If they can’t stand the relatively low heat of answering questions during a debate, then I have serious doubt about their ability to face the really tough questions that a president will confront in a global environment and how that president will handle the stress of office. If Obama can’t handle simple questions like the lapel pin or his past associations with controversial people without whining about how “unfair” these types of questions are, then he obviously isn’t presidential material as a President need fortitude as well as insight.

In other words, I want to see how Obama and the rest will respond to the questioning they’d rather avoid. If they whine about how “unfair” it is and refuse to accept responsibility for a poor performance in a debate by blaming others for their own mistakes and misfortunes, then they will not have my support. I don‘t want a whiner in office, I want a leader. At this point, Obama looks like a whiner, not a leader. That’s his fault and he has only himself to blame.

The meaningless MSM

Judging by the brouhaha occurring in the MSM  after the last debate, it can now be said that they have finally reach the state of paranoia as editorialists, critics, pundits, etc., proclaim all manner of conspiracies took place by ABC against one or the other of their ‘in the bag for’ candidate.

Just like cockroaches that can’t stand it when the kitchen light is turned on and scurry to safety, liberals, too, can’t stand the light of honest debate as they scurry away from the kitchen’s heat by trying to convince everyone that the questions asked were not proper, and they proceed to ‘eat their own’ for posing such questions.

If this occurred with Republican candidates they would be salivating and stumbling all over themselves saying that their questions were fair. Of course, the Republicans would not be complaining in the first place. That seems to be a liberal characteristic.

It is said the “all’s fair in love and war”. I think that politics should now be included to that pronouncement. After all, they are running for the President Of The United States, not for the local Kiwanis Club.

But take heart. The MSM, according to recent articles, are racing toward oblivion so what they say now is meaningless.

So, good riddance to bad rubbish.

Mr Cavnar

Mr Cavnar  is one of the oil executives who has raised money for Sen. Obama. He proudly boasts about it on his blog. The same oil executives that Barack says he doesn't take money from. He has raised enough for Barack's campaign, that Howard Dean has given him a pass to blog at the convention in Denver. He is as left as you can get. In one one his previous blogs he has called Justice Ginsberg just left of center. I read it for laughs.

Kinda like

Norman Hsu, Jonny Chung, Peter Paul, Marc Rich and wife, the wall streeters that are maxed out, big oil, pharma, gun manufactors, and etc.. All hillery supporters and most dirty...
Where is hillary's lapel pin?

Plants..

Nash McCabe is a clinton supporter but not a transplant like the goatee guy in her Penn ad that is registered in New Jersey....

 Where is hillary's lapel pin????

The funniest part of the

The funniest part of the debate is just after Obama was asked the flag pin question, the camera switched to Hillary for the normal reaction shot and then zoomed into her lapels --- thus pointing out that she wasn't wearing one either. The zoom in sure looked intentional.

I Know Why Obama Refuses To Wear A Flag Pin...

I think Obama doesn't wear a flag-pin because it, in itself, is a desecration of the flag. The American flag means much more to any of us than a stupid flag-pin that doesn't even convey the same meaning. Flag pins, as well as those mini-plastic flags that are obscenely adorned all over car antennas, are a gross desecration to the blood and sweat that was used to build our country. I bet most of the people who wave these flags don't even know the stories of the people who constructed and respected the flag, like Betsy Ross, or Francis Scott Key. The flag has been hijacked by corporate interest who want to make a profit off of the blood spilled to defend our country from the Nazis, the Communists of Russia and China, the Islamo-Nazi terrorists.
It would be far more honorable to have someone who should rightfully hold the flag instead of some politician: The American Soldier, who gives up the normality of his life to fight for the freedom of our country.
