Barack Obama has been airing a shamelessly anti-business TV ad in Pennsylvania for a while now. In the ad Obama himself, in his own voice, makes the claim that he doesn't "take money from oil companies." But there is a two-fold deception in this claim that Obama doesn't tell his sycophantic fans. So where is the media to pounce on these cynical deceptions? They’re nowhere to be seen.
Recently I saw the ad where Obama claimed he didn't take contributions from oil companies and the claim struck a chord in my memory. I was under the impression that oil companies could not legally donate to a campaign at all. So, I did some checking and it seems that FactCheck.org did an entire page on Obama's deceptive Pennsylvania ad.
Here is the transcript of the Obama ad:
"Since the gas lines of the ’70s, Democrats and Republicans have talked about energy independence, but nothing’s changed -- except now Exxon’s making $40 billion a year, and we’re paying $3.50 for gas.
I’m Barack Obama. I don’t take money from oil companies or Washington lobbyists, and I won’t let them block change anymore. They’ll pay a penalty on windfall profits. We’ll invest in alternative energy, create jobs and free ourselves from foreign oil. I approve this message because it’s time that Washington worked for you. Not them. "
Yet, as FactCheck.org reminds us, it has been illegal for the last 100 years for an oil company to directly donate to a political campaign. So, while it is technically correct that Obama isn't taking money from oil companies, it is ALSO true that neither is anyone else! Yet, here is Obama saying he doesn't take oil money as if he has made a conscious decision to refuse their support. Someone who does not know that oil companies are barred by law from donating to politicians might easily be led to imagine that Obama is standing up against Bigoil with this ad. It is truly deceptive.
But, there is also another deception, one of omission, in Obama's ad. Again, FactCheck.org reveals the reality that two of Obama's biggest "bundler" donors are executives at oil companies. "Two of Obama's bundlers are top executives at oil companies," FactCheck.org says, "and are listed on his Web site as raising between $50,000 and $100,000 for the presidential hopeful."
The Clinton campaign has made some complaints about the Obama ad be known, but it doesn't seem that the deceptions in this ad are getting much play. I have seen a few blogs like the Huffington Post discuss this thing, but not very many MSM sources of news have investigated the charge.
Clinton complains that Obama's ad amounts to "false advertising" and that his claims of not taking money from PACS and Bigoil are deceptive. For once, I agree with Hillary.
Here is FactCheck.org on this charge:
When the Clinton campaign criticized Obama's ad, calling it "false advertising," Obama's campaign quickly noted that he didn't take money from political action committees or lobbyists.
We'd say the Obama campaign is trying to create a distinction without very much of a practical difference. Political action committee funds are pooled contributions from a company's or an organization's individual employees or members; corporate lobbyists often have a big say as to where a PAC's donations go. But a PAC can give no more than $5,000 per candidate, per election. We're not sure how a $5,000 contribution from, say, Chevron's PAC would have more influence on a candidate than, for example, the $9,500 Obama has received from Chevron employees giving money individually.
In addition, two oil industry executives are bundling money for Obama – drumming up contributions from individuals and turning them over to the campaign. George Kaiser, the chairman of Oklahoma-based Kaiser-Francis Oil Co., ranks 68th on the Forbes list of world billionaires. He's listed on Obama's Web site as raising between $50,000 and $100,000 for the candidate. Robert Cavnar is president and CEO of Milagro Exploration LLC, an oil exploration and production company. He's named as a bundler in the same category as Kaiser.
And still we get silence from the Obammites in the media. It is becoming clear that the MSM has dumped their longtime favorite Clinton and jumped with both feet onto the Obama bandwagon. It is just as clear that they have abdicated to the Internet their proper role as reporters and watchdogs.

Time and again this Obama
April 13, 2008 - 11:24 ET by ConservativeRexTime and again this Obama will attempt to pull the wool over every ones eyes. By the looks of things, he's done it his entire life. He has the MSM fooled, but then again, when you're a lib you can pretty much say anything you want and the MSM will believe you. Well, anything but tell those little monkeys to get out of a tree, that they will crucify you over and throw another supporter under the bus.
It pretty much clear that it is illegal to take money directly from Oil Companies, but his constituency doesn't know or care on the veracity of that statement. And he knows his constituency. But, that's not enough to win, he needs enablers from the majority. But he'll not get enough of them either.

Obama – Black is Wright
April 13, 2008 - 12:12 ET by olandugObama – Black is Wright
Obama attracts thugs and bullies to his campaign and personal life and is able to do so with impunity.
If Obama where Caucasian, he would have been bulldozed by the media long ago.
Look at Obama’s affiliations:
- Senator Meeks who openly hates whites and gays and is listed prominently on Obama’s campaign website as a major Obama supporter and backer and is one of Obama;s super-delegate. Mr. Meeks has been integral in helping Mr. Obama succeed in politics.
- Mr. Ayers of the Weather Underground, a group that killed police and tried to bomb the US Capitol, served with Obama on the board of the leftist foundation called the Woods Fund.
- Robert Malley a close senior adviser to Obama who advocates negotiations with Hamas and providing international assistance to the terrorist group.
- Larry Sinclair alleges in 1999 Senator Obama’s arranged to meet him in a limousine, sold Senator Obama cocaine and then gave Senator Obama oral sex. Larry then claims that he and Obama went to a hotel and preformed oral sex again. Mr. Sinclair is testifying in court under oath that these allegations are true.
- Mr. Auchi is an Iraqi billionaire and major financial sponsor and closely connected to Obama’s rise to power.
While working with Saddam Hussein, Auchi made his fortune through the selling of arms in Iraq and the funneling off of money from the Oil for Food program.
- Mr. Rezko an Iraqi citizen and Obama’s and Auchi’s long time friend and a major mob figure. Rezko is NOT known for his civic sense of duty and does not do favors without asking something in return. Coincidently in the Chicago Times today it was reported that Rezko was negotiating to purchase rehab buildings in Obama’s district.
- Mr. Wright a racist who hates America and whites with Hitleresque triads. Mr. Wright has been Mr. Obama’s spiritual mentor for over 20 years. Before the media exposed Mr. Wright, Mr. Wright was on Obama’s campaign staff as Obama's chief religious advisor. Mr. Wright and Mr. Meeks are ideologically closer to Karl Marx and Black Nationalism, than to Christianity.
- Rashid Khalidi a fundraiser for Obama and is one of Obama’s close friends. Khalidi Khalidi claim Israel as a "catastrophe", and supports Palestinian terrorist groups.
- Mr. McPeaks is Obama’s military adviser and national campaign co-chairman who publicly states that American Jews are the "problem." and “Christian Zionists were driving America's policy in Iraq to benefit Israel.”
- Michelle Obama trumpets Obama as “the second coming of the messiah,” and also states that she “has never been proud to be an AMERICAN in her adult life".
The list goes on…
How can Obama’s bad judgment to choose to affiliate with criminals and fanatics be justified?
Had Hillary Clinton had any of the above ghosts in her closet, she would have been thrown out of the election long ago.
Hey everybody - am I missing something here?

really he doesn't take money from oil companies
April 13, 2008 - 12:26 ET by lunaticcringeradioas a senator i wonder how many times he voted to continue or to raise taxes on gas. isn't that taking money from the oil companies and in proxy me.
who was it, i think it was rush limbaugh either thurs or fri in his 5 minute precast where he laid it on how much profit the oil companies are in the billions, money they earned by finding the oil, drilling the oil, transporting the oil, refining the oil, and storing it ready for our use. all through those efforts there are sandwiched inbetween each majorstep tariffs and taxes slipped in there, and the oil companies still only make a single digit precentage of profit. yet the government who does nothing to make any effort to lift a finger to work for "us" taxes oil compaines in the trillions. so basically the governments parasitic profit margin is basically 100%.
but oil companies are the greedy ones, and if obama, being a democrat who never turns down a vote for increasing taxes, ever voted to continue or increase taxes on oil, then yes, he does take oil money. obama has taken oil money in the worst way possible, he's taken it by force instead of as a campaign contribution. at least the later is a more respectible.

the government gets trillions

Who's Financing Obama?
April 13, 2008 - 12:35 ET by geoff.galeThis discussion brings up a point that I think has gotten precious little scrutiny - exactly who is financing SnObama? When he brings in that $55M in a month, where exactly does it come from? Is it all $5, $10, $20 contributions from the masses? Or, is most of it coming from PAC's that tie back to corporations, foreign sources, or advocacy groups? My gut tells me that there's a big story waiting to be told about who SnObama is going to owe, if he get elected.

I'm sick to death of the "Pander of the Week" style of Obama's campaign. If the MsM decided next week that the incidence of foot calluses constitutes a national health crisis and that Dr. Scholl's is enjoying record profits as a result, Obama would deny any campaign contributions from Dr. Scholl's and promise to increase the availability of public transportation so that people didn't have to walk so much. Which would in turn provide more opportunities to pander to those who have health problems because of lack of exercise. See. The liberal/socialist just never runs out of things to do for the common people because socialism creates a new problem for every problem they claim to have solved.

Oil is
April 13, 2008 - 16:53 ET by Gary P JacksonOil is ANTI-PROGRESS!?!
Leon, you've outdone yourself. Just when I thought you couldn't say something sillier, you prove me wrong.
OIL is ALL about progess. Oil completely fuels our civilization. Oil took us out of the 19th century in a hurry. Oil has elevated the life of every man woman and child in the industrial world.
If for no other reason, we don't ride horses anymore. Horses are ill tempered big stupid animals, but the real issue is their by product. Talk about harmful emissions! Horses did their "business" where they stood, or walked. (still do) The amount of horse manure on city streets, along with the accompanying flies and other insects, played a big part in the disease problems of the era.
Oil is indeed progress. And you have no answer for it's replacement. Wind and solar ain't gonna do it. And there is no whizzbang new science fiction fuel out there either.
Bio-fuels, forget it. Besides the obvious stupidity of using food for fuel, there is simply no way to make enough of it, or make it without using more energy than it produces or without unbelievable amounts of water per gallon of fuel produced.
Bio-fuels are nothing new. Rudolf Diesel developed his engine in the late 1800's to run on vegetable oil, or whale oil. Obviously we don't do that now, because it's not cost effective for mass markets. Sure there are guys who buy up old Mercedes and other diesel powered cars, that go and recycle restaurant cooking oil. But those are one offs.
As for ethanol, Henry Ford, who grew up on a farm, played with the idea as he was developing his new automobile. I'm talking late 1890's early 1900's. Back then gasoline was expensive, rather poor grade, and not easy to get. For safety most supplies were kept outside of populated areas. Ethanol was actually a better fuel, but even at the turn of the last century, when cars were still little more than a curiosity, Ford, and others realized bio-fuels were a non-starter. The scale of production was impossible. Still is.
Oil is the engine of democracy. It has made everyones life better. It's not evil. It's not all that unclean of a power source. And only really stupid people think it is.
We absolutely do NOT have
April 13, 2008 - 16:02 ET by Warner Todd HustonWe absolutely do NOT have "viable alternatives" to oil. EVERY alternative is far, far more expensive than oil. That makes them NOT "viable" at all.
In fact, were you to suddenly eliminate oil and try to substitute any of your so-called "viable alternatives" you would send the third world into the dark ages and impoverish billions.... yes EVEN worse than they now are.
Of course, to a environazi, human lives are meaningless, so... whatever.
WTH, Alternative enery is
April 13, 2008 - 16:11 ET by LeonWTH,
Alternative enery is inevitable. It's the guaranteed future. There's no reason to fight it.
Furthermore, Alternative Energy is an amazing stimulant for the economy. Creates jobs, rewards innovation, and is an amazing opportunity for America to dominate a market of ever-increasing revenue.
I see no down sides to moving towards alternative energy exclusively. Oil is finite. There is a limit. Why invest in something that will ultimately be obsolete? It makes no sense.
Are you afraid? Is that it? I really don't understand. I genuinely think the only reason you all support these position is b/c of your hatred of all things liberal. It's more about attacking your opponents than advancing a viable position. Very petty.
PS WTH where'd you go the other day? April 13, 2008 - 16:28 ET by Warner Todd HustonWrong on every count.
#1- I never said we should STOP trying to develop alternative energies. So, your claim that I am "fighting it" is just plain stupid.
#2- We have HUNDREDS of years of oil that we still have not gotten to. So, financially it makes NO sense to rush to untested and unprofitable alternatives.
#3- The ONLY reason you support these so-called alternatives is for political/religious reasons. It is a matter of pure faith for people like you to dream the dreamy dream that alternatives are plentiful. They are not. Someday they will be and we should move to put them in use then. That ain't NOW.
#4- I have been in Washington D.C. since last Wed. and only got back yesterday, so I am not aware of the thread you are talking about.

And demand for oil couldn't be skyrocketing because of enormous economic growth in the two most populous countries on Earth, China and India, could it?

Learn something from our generation, Leon
April 13, 2008 - 17:16 ET by nkviking75Unfortunately, the lesson of our generation is that a lot of baby boomers wrongly thought they were smarter and better than anyone who came before. They thought they'd bring love and peace to the world. They were smug and self righteous. And they were dead wrong.
By all means, keep up the search for alternative energy. But in the real world, oil is one of the cheapest and most abundant sources of energy. Oil would be a lot cheaper if the envirowackos would stop blocking new drilling and new refineries and roll back silly regulations. But even as things are, no one has improved on oil.
We're resisting a commitment to these alternative energy sources because at the moment, we cannot afford them. When and if something better than oil comes along, there won't be a need to twist people's arms to adopt it. They'll gladly embrace it.
When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

April 13, 2008 - 16:34 ET by CobraMan"We now have plenty of viable alternatives."
You mean like ethanol? You know, the food crop derived fuel that's already causing global food shortages and could very well lead to mass starvation? Is this what you call progress? I think NOT!
Come to think of it, killing tens of millions of people in the name of progress is a tried and true method of advancing society, right? I mean, it works SO WELL for the citizens of China under Mao's "Great Leap Forward" whom took part in that “progressive” policy, didn't it? It was so progressive that only a few tens of millions of people died do to fact that they gave up their backwards thinking and embraced the future by making steel instead of growing food. That's just like the progressive policy of making fuel from grain, instead of using it to make food, that we employ today to create a viable alternative to oil.
Hell, with that kind of historical record of successful government mandated "progress" as a guide, I guess we conservatives really do need to move forward and let tens of millions of people starve to death just so we have a viable alternative to "anti-progressive" oil. Isn’t that right, Leon?
You notice that when I
April 13, 2008 - 16:48 ET by motherbeltYou notice that when I asked Leon to elaborate on his "plenty of viable alternatives" he ignored me. What a surprise.
Solar, wind and water...oops...scratch water. Can't build a dam if it might harm a snail darter or salmon...Oh, and scratch wind if it's within view of Ted Kennedy's home. And solar: I read somewhere that the entire state of Illinois would have to be covered in solar panels to supply Chicago.... well, what the heck...everyone in Illinois can move to Chicago.
Not a suprise at all
April 13, 2008 - 17:13 ET by CobraManLeon fails to understand that his "viable" alternatives to oil will invariably lead to the deaths of tens or hundreds of millions, or possibly billions, of people who won't be able to share in his "progress" and enjoy the benefits of his “viable” alternatives to oil.
I would love for Leon, or any other proponent to "viable" alternative energy sources, to go to Africa, for example, and explain to them why they need to stop growing grain for food and use it instead to make "viable" ethanol. I would love to see him explain to them that this policy is actually beneficial to them in the long run, except, of course, to the millions who will starve to death in the process. Buy, hay, you can’t make an omelet unless you’re willing to break a few eggs. Right, Leon?
Hay Leon, in case you don’t know it, we don't eat oil. We DO, however, eat grain. It's foolish beyond belief to burn our food instead if eating it. You may save oil by burning your food supply, but not for long as you'll starve to death in the process. So, tell me, just how "progressive" is that idea again?

Get of your high horse.
April 13, 2008 - 18:12 ET by CobraManSyrius,
Get off your high horse, the lack of O2 at that altitude is starving your brain cells.
If you’re so smart, then tell me of an alternative replacement to oil that is as abundant, efficient, cost effective and generally useful to mankind than oil. Which alternative replacement to oil does mankind have today that will not lead to a massive decrease in the production of staple food crops and will not raise costs of manufacturing so high that people can't afford even the basic necessities of life like housing, clean water, and clothing?
I want just one example. Can you provide it? I don’t think you can. As you are well aware, every alternative to date can not match the incredibly useful properties of oil, nor can they be used in so many products and in so many helpful ways as oil has provided us over the last 100 years.
Until you can come up with a real world VIABLE alternative to oil that doesn't cause more problems that it creates, I suggest you keep looking as you definitely haven found one yet. Good luck on your search though.

Yes, it is, and do you know why? It's ”choice” because it demonstrates the fact that you can't refute any of my arguments and that's driving you nuts. I’ve given you examples of the harm that can, and will be, caused by your “viable alternatives” to oil. You’ve seen the folly of a mandate to replace oil with alternatives like ethanol and the harm that mandate will cause. It’s contrary to what you’ve been led to believe and it‘s counter to your political beliefs as well. A damn conservative just showed you how wrong you are. That’s really bothering you, isn’t it?
You can’t refute the fact that oil is necessary to provide the massive amounts of energy that is required to produce the food and additional resources which is necessary to support the large number of people on this planet and that your vaunted “alternative” sources are actually harmful to everybody. Your “solution” to the oil “problem” can very well kill hundreds of millions of the very people you wish to save. Because you can‘t refute this simple observation, and because it‘s contrary to your beliefs, you resort to insulting and demeaning posts in order to get me to stop making similar observations.
Your reactions are not indicative of someone with high intelligence. As a matter of fact, they’re down right childish. Contrary to some people’s beliefs, childish behavior is hardly intelligent; it’s actually quite the opposite.

BTW bigtimer, I'm halfway through Thomas Sowell's book "Economic Facts and Fallacies". I'm sure I'd heard it before, but he states throughout the book that 90% of the land in the U.S. is undeveloped - much as a result of restrictive enviromental policies. And he explains how these policies stunt economic growth and prosperity. If you haven't read the book, I highly recommend it. I'm not someone who's savvy in the field of economics; so I really appreciate the way Sowell is able to make the topic understandable. And I'm storing up lots of ammo for discussions with libs about their short-sighted, feel-good solutions.

It's a mad, mad world at times.

Queen thanks for the heads
April 13, 2008 - 17:28 ET by bigtimerQueen thanks for the heads up on Sowell's book, we both like him here, I will jot that down and try to order that with my other list of books I get about every three months...yeah Sowell is absolutely correct, everything from timber, mining and oil has been hurt greatly by the lefties in congress, the greenies, towns and their economies have completely dried up...and all that goes with that.
I have written endlessly about this, here and elsewhere...it is maddening.

The "little" people
April 13, 2008 - 16:34 ET by iveseenitallSmall town, mid-American whites to Barack (the uniter):
"So you don't like our "religious" ways. So you have nothing but comtempt for our way of life. So think you are better than we are.---Then go back to the ghetto and give some more help to "your own people", the drug pushers, the rappers, the boys from the hood. Go back to your own "church" where hatred, not religion is fostered. We'll be just fine without the likes of you, your wife, and your minister, Barry."

Right
April 13, 2008 - 16:49 ET by iveseenitallRight on. And we're also tired of whites like Trent Lott or Don Imus, or Jimmy the Greek losing their jobs when they utter ONE insensitive sentence, while guys like you, Barry, and your "minister", and your wife, and the Jacksons and the Sharptons get a pass every time. We know what you said, what Rev.Wrong said, what your wife said! Stop insulting us with your pathetic explanations. We're not buying what you're selling anymore.

....and I am danged tired of the constant barrage of apologies, if you feel the need to apologize, so be it, do it once with meaning and move on, don't back down.
We have had a bunch of wimps that have aided and abetted this very situation we are in now regarding racism...with pay-offs to the likes of Sharpton and Jackson and never demanding an immediate apology from them when the situation is reversed two-fold at times.

Apologies
April 13, 2008 - 17:20 ET by iveseenitallBT:
You are so right. O.W. Holmes once wrote:
"Apology is only egotism wrong side out. Nine times out of ten, the first thing a man's companion knows of his shortcomings is from his apology."
Barry, et.al. keep apologizing because they don't want to be found out. Ironically, however, all these apologies are working in the opposite direction for them. Good point, BT.

I am sick of the
April 13, 2008 - 17:29 ET by motherbeltI am sick of the non-apology!! The "if anyone was offended" tripe. No one is ever sorry for what they said, only that someone was offended by it. It's done thus:
I am really sorry if you were offended by my calling you pond scum, or if you were injured by my punching you in the mouth. It was not my intent to hurt you.
Not sorry that I did either of those things; only that you were hurt by them.
This is the new apology, and not only in politics. A guy who goes to a party with his fiancee and flirts shamelessly with other women says "I'm sorry that you were upset by that."
Drives me nuts!!
"I'm sorry that you were
April 13, 2008 - 17:40 ET by QueenMum"I'm sorry that you were upset by that."
Means that you really didn't understand what I was trying to say because you're too stupid and/or you're too sensitive, rather than what I said was wrong.
I am the exotic Queen Mum, and I approved this message.

April 13, 2008 - 17:40 ET by bigtimermb...
Of course as you can tell I agree, what has driven me crazy is the msm protecting the three spins in the wind of Obama's with his non-apology apology....
The msm and the Obama minions are praying and I use that term lightly... that this matter is done by Monday and we all just move on.
Not going to happen, there may be a lull but these very words will be used by groups against Obama in the general election if he is the so-called victor.
Btw....I used so-called on purpose because I am sick of the talking heads constantly using that word as a deragotory all the time in their pieces, on the air during the shows...so-called surge for example, used ad nauseum.

Deleted for contrary thought?
April 13, 2008 - 21:19 ET by RiharI went to the above Youtube video and posted a comment with the above-stated info from FactCheck.org. It has now been several hours (as of Sunday 9pm CDT) and my comment has not been posted. Is anyone aware of the review methods of Youtube? Or are there any review methods for that matter, I've seen some pretty ugly comments under some things I've seen there.
Does anyone here have knowledge of what I'm talking about here?

April 13, 2008 - 21:25 ET by bigtimerRihar..I know what you are talking about regarding comments on Youtube...but know nothing of how they rate or decide to put comments on, I always assume they posted it when it says your comment has been posted, I don't always check back, maybe I should.
Hope I didn't confuse you more.

April 13, 2008 - 22:25 ET by RiharNo, I got it. Thanks. Upon further review of the page I noticed that it's similarities are closer to an Obama campaign site than a Youtube site. Maybe contrary thought is indeed verboten after all.

But, oild companies can donate to the DNC and do.
April 14, 2008 - 07:40 ET by c5thenThe DNC also allocates some of their money to individual campaigns including Obama's. Therefore Obama does take oil money and he knows it.
