Remember the iconic 1951 Cold War era film, “The Day the Earth Stood Still”? It was a black and white film starring Michael Rennie as Klaatu, an alien who came to Earth to warn our warring nations that a galactic police force had deemed the world a “danger” to intelligent life everywhere and that we faced annihilation unless we acted nice. It was one of the classic, dystopian films with a utopian message. If only we could all just get along! Well, true to the axiom that there isn’t anything new in Hollywood, it is being remade as a Keanu Reeves vehicle (that’s Hollywood talk for “starring Keanu Reeves").
Now, the original film was all about love for your fellow man, ending war, planting daisies and a being nice little Earthling… or Klaatu and his trusty robot Gort will blow you up. As the Cold War was looming in the minds of the civilized nations and MAD* had set the table for “doomsday clocks” and backyard bomb shelters, the original “Day” was a timely, if not a bit hamhanded, epic with a message. The title character, Klaatu, when hiding as a human, even took the name “Mr. Carpenter” as an allegory to Christ. Naturally, the bad, bad humans martyred the kindly “Mr. Carpenter” in the end. It was all very much geared for its time.
Well, as mentioned, they are now about to remake “Day” and they have searched the world over for a new timely message to expound upon. Is it that we still have too many people on this planet living in poverty? Is it that we still lamentably have regimes that use force and tyranny against their people? Is it that war is still all too common? Could these things be why the new “Day” film will posit that a powerful alien race wants to just erase humanity like a bad virus?
Nah. As far as the new “Day” movie goes, these powerful aliens are mad at us not because we are mean to each other, not because we might then bring that meanness with us into outer space. No, the important message that the Keanu Klaatu wants to bring us, the message that will warn us of an apocalyptic impending alien police action is….
Global warming.
That’s right folks, apparently the new “Day” movie is positing that the worst thing man has done, the one thing that will make an alien race ponder our destruction, is that we caused global warming.
Why, exactly, any alien race would care that we are supposedly causing our own world to die is anybodies guess. At least in the original the alien's reason to consider destroying us all is because we might have infected their idyllic existence with our human pugnacity and violence. At least that is somewhat believable -- though, it always begged the question that if peace was their goal, why did the aliens have to do it at the point of a gun and threats of genocide, but whatever.
So, a little pollution, a casually tossed plastic bag, a smoke stack or two, that is enough to destroy the Earth and commit genocide for the alien race in this new version of “The Day the Earth Stood Still.”
Of course, since the movie is fantasy, it seems only fitting that the fantasy of man-made global warming is made out to be such a danger to the universe, isn’t it? It is also amusing that the globaloney crowd has now expanded the eeeevils of man’s destruction of the environment from just being a danger to the Earth to now being a danger to the entire Universe!
Yes, not only can man destroy the entire Earth by ignoring our “Carbon footprint,” now man is destroying the entire universe! Talk about a god complex! This movie has it going in spades.
What do you think? Oscar material?
Maybe if we just say "Klaatu barada nikto" it’ll all go away?
*MAD= Mutually Assured Destruction.

I won't be watching any remake that screws up the classic theme of the movie. I've got it in my collection, Hollywood back in the day knew how to do good music scores to set the mood. This new one will flop just like all the Anti-War movies, people are getting fed up with all the propaganda and certainly aren't willing to PAY for crap.

I actually might be heading down that way this fall. It's strange but in the past year, 4 of my friends (born and raised in the Northeast) all moved down to Houston. 3 for jobs, one for PhD at Rice.
As a result, several of my friends and myself are thinking about taking a week or so to head down to Texas, namely Austin & Houston. A nice little road trip. I have 2 goals for the trip.
1) Party hard in Austin
2) Big game fishing in Houston

April 11, 2008 - 10:40 ET by LeonMarpel,

That's cool that your son can play. It's literally, in my opinion, the single most bada** thing you can be good at. I would sacrifice every other skill I have to be good at guitar. I played for a bit when I was younger, but just didn't have the time with sports and everything. Plus I didn't have the natural talent.
My little brother, however, is incredible. In fact, end of the month, he's opening for two major American groups. Should be a fun time. Do you get to go to many of your son's shows? My parents go to as many shows as they can. My friends always think it's funny to see them out like that. Not quite as funny as when my grandparents come though! ha.

April 11, 2008 - 10:53 ET by marpelMy son plays only for pleasure now. He's traded performing for movies. He's a CG artist and animator. That's why he's in Austin. He was one of the animators for A Scanner Darkly with Keanu Reeves. In fact, he was the one who animated Keanu. I'm very proud of him.
His guitar playing was so good that when he graduated high school I bought him a Gretsch 6120. I felt that he had gotten so good that having a Gretsch for his rock-a-billy shows was the only way to go. If I was at one of his shows he would close it out by playing Sleepwalk, because he knows it's one of my favorites. But, I also did my fair share of "roadie" work for him when he was even too young to drink at the clubs he was playing in.
Those were good days, but his best days are ahead of him with his career.

April 11, 2008 - 12:01 ET by LeonMarpel,
He sounds like an extremely talented guy. He's got a dream life. Ex-rocker into cg animator. Not a bad way to go! I have a friend who works as a cg animator and I know from talking to him that that is brutally hard work. Rewarding, but it's not easy. You're son must have a stellar work ethic (not to mention some big brains!)
I enjoyed Scanner Darkly. Thought it was a great flick. I loved the book too. Bit of a Philip K. Dick fan. The animation was spectacular. I still can't figure out how they do it.
The Gretsch eh? That's a beautiful guitar. Plus hollow body's the only way to rip as far as I'm concerned. My brother's spent almsot every cent he's ever made on guitars. There's nothing better than a good guitar. These days my brother's rotating three guitars. Heritage hollow body, Gibson ES-335, & a Paul Reed Smith single cut.
It's a surprise for his college graduation this spring, but with some of my bonus from last year I've ordered him an Alembic custom. He's wanted one for years but my family could never afford it. I'm just hoping it arrives in time.
I imagine you and my mother could share some great roadie stories of the days before your son could drink! ha. Sleepwalk's your favorite eh? (i like the Ventures version) Good jam. I really do think it's amazing when a family gets behind someone's talents like that. I'm sure there were nights when you might not have felt like going to a bar but you went to support your son anyways. Very impressive. I think you could easily argue that your early support of his artistic endeavors helped him to find his current career.
Hopefully, even though he's probably working all the time, he's still rocking out when he can, right?
I'm glad you liked
April 11, 2008 - 12:58 ET by marpelI'm glad you liked "Scanner"... It was done w/ Rotoscoping. They filmed the movie, and then the animators rotoscoped over it to make it a moving comic book. It was well received at the Comicon the year it opened. My son purchased his pad and stylus he used during the movie. He uses it now for his photoshop paintings and the other FX he does. He's doing some matte paintings for a new dinosaur special that will be on the History Channel.
I'm 100% behind my son. And now he's found a wonderful girl to share his life with. I think she will look after him.
He still gets together with his buddies and plays some good tunes. Sometimes I get lucky to be able to listen in...
And, yes, he's got a great work ethic. It took him a while to get his degree because of the movies he would be working on, but he finally did it and graduated cum laude. :o)

Stolen from "Plan 9 from Outer Space"
April 11, 2008 - 11:19 ET by Hunter12Plan 9: The plot of the film is focused on a race of extraterrestrial beings who are seeking to stop humans from creating a doomsday weapon that would destroy the universe. In the course of doing so, the aliens implement "Plan 9", a scheme to resurrect Earth's dead as zombies to get the planet's attention, causing chaos.
Why do the aliens need Plan 9?
"Once inside, Eros tells the humans that his people first came to Earth to talk and to ask for their aid, but the humans wouldn't listen to their messages. According to Eros, the humans will eventually discover the "solarbonite," a bomb that has the effect of exploding "sunlight molecules." Eros explains that a solarbonite explosion would destroy everything the sunlight touches, causing a chain reaction that would eventually destroy the entire universe."If you have the solarbonite, you have nothing!"
Obviously, the non-military use of solarbonite is to absorb AGW, but the White House will only see it's other use and will precipitate the need for Klaatu to implement Plan 9.
If you've never seen this movie, it's worth the watch. The reason Bela Lugosi just walks around in the cape and does the Dracula impression is that he's actual dead. Ed Wood used the only footage of Bela several places. The space ships "fly" on visible wires and when they land, they turn into silver painted square tool sheds. Rated one of the worst movies ever made, the un-intentional humor and bad acting are a riot.

April 10, 2008 - 17:29 ET by kidkosmicMy first post and I have some info to add!
The director of TDTESS, Scott Derrickson, is an out-of-the-closet Christian in Hollywood. This has no bearing on his belief or non-belief in man-made global warming (obviously, a growing number of Christians of all stripes are buying in to The Great Hoax), but it is of interest, I think. The guy goes against the flow to let the world know he's a Christian in an environment where that's not really cool. Scott's last pic was "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," and he is also slated to direct an adaptation of Milton's "Paradise Lost."

needle, I don't think there's any real danger of Paradise Lost being slagged by Hollywood. There's not a lot of heat for the project right now. Lots of projects get set up and go straight to "development hell." I know, I've been there.
won't get fooled again
April 10, 2008 - 20:56 ET by m1xrama growing number of Christians of all stripes are buying in to The Great Hoax
Not this one. Paul tells us... "Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil." 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22
I'm at a loss to understand how bankrupting this Christian Nation would be beneficial. Should I just send my money to the Gorical? Nah.
Stewardship
April 10, 2008 - 21:27 ET by kidkosmicI agree.
Some Christians see it as a stewardship issue--God expects man to take care of the Earth for Him. I agree with that, but, at least for me, I don't see that as a reason why I can't run the air conditioner in my SUV while driving all by my lonesome anywhere I want to go, anytime I want to go. I don't think God cares either.
Other evangelicals see the Global Warming issue as a way to "reach out" to the world and...evangelize. "Hey, I see you care about the environment, well, so do I! Did you know that Jesus...."
stewardship balance
April 10, 2008 - 22:16 ET by m1xramThat's right. Genesis 1:26 says that we're in charge. Therefore, we must manage our resources wisely to meet peoples' needs and not screw every thing up. (What that means is debatable.) Those issues must be balanced as best we can. We should care about what God has given us and use it to help others. How to find the balance?
I'm sure this has nothing to do with Al Gore Warming (AGW) or his plans to profit from it though.
→ That's it mixram !!
April 10, 2008 - 22:21 ET by Cool ArrowI've often wondered about it, but now it's clear.
When God told Adam and Eve to replenish the earth, it must have been after a previous population, millions of years before caused Global Warming.

Carl Sagan
April 10, 2008 - 22:50 ET by m1xramNo you're thinking of Carl Sagan. He thinks there was no Big Bang, we're just going around and around, over and over.
...I feel like I've had this conversation before. Bill-yunns and bill-yunns of stars in that galacktic stufff.
Hey Kid, Maybe they can
April 11, 2008 - 11:24 ET by Hunter12Hey Kid, Maybe they can make Paradise Lost a sequel to The Day, after it's boffo box office, of course. Welcome aboard!

"Stood Still" premise update
April 10, 2008 - 19:15 ET by Mica the MagnificentUpdate on The Day the Earth Stood Still - 2008 premise:
Chris Matthews: Hey, Klaatu. Your presence gives a thrill up my leg. What do you have to say to the earth people?
Klaatu: You must stop this global warming. We have no oceans on my planet, no mountains, no rivers - therefore, no view! Earth is the major view for upscale real estate buyers on my planet.
Screw up the blue oceans, the puffy clouds, or anything else- you screw our real estate values. This makes Klaatu, and our real estate lobby - pissed.
Klaatu barada nikto.
Chris Matthews: What does that mean?
Klaatu: It means I'm free on Saturday, (wink wink.) Why stop with a thrill up your leg, dough boy? My robot likes to watch.
They'll never learn
April 10, 2008 - 20:24 ET by pbthinkerI can just imagine all the hype that will come out about this flick. After the first weekend, when all the Gorebal Warming nuts see it, it will be judged for what it is, another Hollowood attempt to get their agenda out. It will fail, as always, because movies with agenda's are very seldom good movies.

The Day The Earth Stood Still Remake?
April 10, 2008 - 21:04 ET by BeukeboomThe Day The Earth Stood Still Remake?
Can you say "BOMB" boys and girls?
I knew you could.
The original was better
April 10, 2008 - 21:19 ET by m1xramThere are very few remakes that are better than the original, especially when they hose up the story. "3:10 to Yuma" was completely unbelievable. "Legend" (was Omega Man) messed up the ending also. "The Day the Earth Flipped Out" will be worse due to the bizarre propaganda that will be in there. One can only hope that Gort destroys the Earth before we have to watch it.
Why don't they stick to G movies? They always make lots of money and are usually enjoyable for the whole family. It's like they have no marketing departments in Hollyweed.

I always thought John Carpenter's "The Thing" was a great remake.
Would you guys consider those great Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns to be remakes of Akiro Kurosawa's classics? If I remember correctly, "A Fistful of Dollars" was a remake.
What about those Japanese horror remakes? "The Grudge"and "the Ring"?

I agree, but I'm not sure it's better than the original.

April 11, 2008 - 10:43 ET by NewsbusterbrownI also agree that Batman Begins, Ocean's 11 and Casino Royale are better than the originals. I would also throw in King Kong, The Fly, His Girl Friday, the 1973 version of The Three Musketeers and the Bogart version of The Maltese Falcon.
