This ’Artist ’ is a Jerk


We talk of liberalism in the news media every day here on NewsBusters, of course. But the leftist lack of standards and morals that we decry in the news media is reflected in much of our entertainment and art, as well. We've discussed leftism in music and in the movies many times, but here is another story where the degradation of western culture is plainly visible. Now we can add a new outrage to the world of "art" with the exhibit of Spent by "performance, installation" artist Jordan McKenzie that features the artist's ejaculation patterns on paper, sprinkled with colored powder to make the stream visible, then framing bunches of them on a wall.

Please excuse the language here, but here is the Sun’s report

AN ARTIST has created a new exhibition of drawings by masturbating over paper.

Um, yeah. Hooray for “art.”

This one is just another absurdity hailed as "art" in this day of the artless, pseudo intellectuals of the left. It isn’t the first by any means. Remember the supposed art piece that debuted in 1999 in New York that featured elephant dung glued to a picture of the Mother Mary? And who could forget the 1989 Maplethorpe exhibit or Andres Serrano's photo of a crucifix in urine?

And, we don’t even have to look for “art” that stirs outrage to see the degradation of the concept of what is art. We have but to look to New York’s Whitney Museum to see the current display of the “works” of Lawrence Weiner and his so-called art of his "text-based structures" which consists of non-sequiturs scribbled on white walls. Yes, that’s the whole thing… just words on a wall with no attempt to tell a story or make any real sense. THAT is called "art. "

So, here is our modern "art" that pointy-heads all across the western world are pulling at the chins over, as they exclaim how "simply mad" they are about all this "art. "

It is simply the death of real artistic expression replaced with empty gestures of kitsch and a reductio ad absurdum of the very concept of art.

Yes, we are inching closer to self-destruction every day.

All of this is a symptom of

All of this is a symptom of the disrequirement of "talent" to be considered artistic.... which was a direct result of our educational policies that emphasize self-esteem over academic performance.  We teach our kids, it's not worth it to try hard to create quality with effort... just do what makes you feel good, because the pop-psychologists and shyster lawyers are ready to sue the pants off of anyone that makes a kid feel less than stellar about being a total idiot.

There is no doubt this person "felt good" about their mockery of art, and lacked any actual talent.  Ironic that the act which "will make you go blind" is going to make so many others wish they WERE blind.

Andres Serrano, may he live to swim in it, was the artist of the crucifix in urine. Mapplethorpe took pictures of, among similarly pleasant things, a guy with a whip handle where the moon don't shine if you get my drift and I think you do.

Nowhere in the original article is any mention of politics; in fact the article that is referenced has no one promoting this “art” except for the artist Mr McKenzie. Bad art is bad art, Mr Houston. If you think this comes from the “liberal” side, you need to broaden your reading material and websites you go to. Standards and morality are not political they come from upbringing

they say art isn't something that can't be clearly defined, which i do tend to agree with, but let me try and boil it down a litl here. where has it ever been found that in between hunting for food to survive, gathering sticks and twigs for a fire or to whittle a spear to survive, and sewing up animal skins for warmth to survive was all done and over and the cavemen finally had a litl free time to practice a litl bit of freedom of speech and entertain others by producing artwork on their cave walls did they ever color their semen and paint the walls with that?

Not many, but conservatives do realize that health and safety regs are right, they are for taxes of reasonable amount, etc. Few conservatives are laissez faire... even Adam Smith wasn't.

in order to codify capitalism and prevent the abuses of mercantilism and outright theft you have to have some base laws and regulations to spell out the details, to whit:

1) the outright permit of private property and all that entails including buying, selling, modifying

2) the freedom and sanctity of contract between consenting entities without interferrence by the government with exception to protecting the innocent from abuse, including laws to enforce contracts legally entered into

3) freedom of movement between and in states of people and capital without let or hinderance

These are merely the top of the pile. There are others.

I originally responded to this with a long rambling post (yes, longer than this one) which even I regarded with a WTH! when I was done. Short answer: it is not about the individual when you are dealing with society so my thoughts on the subject are useless. What is about the individual is that he/she uses those skills and talents they possess to be a positive influence on society and offer the opportunity for future generations to improve their position.
To answer your questions:
"When do I, as an American Citizen, according to you, become a positive part of the community?" - that is up to society but in today’s world if you are not making a negative impact I would say you are doing well.
"How will you judge what is positive or negative?" - Once again it not up to the individual in society but IMO a person who gives as much to society (not necessarily monetarily) as they take is a positive influence. It will be up to society to judge that contribution as "good or evil".
"Liberal or Conservative?" - The country needs both to varying degrees. If the country was ever to go too far in either direction it would self-destruct.
"What is morality to you and how do we as Americans fit into your world?" - My morality is more situational and flexible than the conservatives of this site so if you are looking for a conservative answer I can't help you. But morality to me is making the effort to find out what is right and making decisions based on that goal.

Look at the movies we take

Look at the movies we take our children to see, look at the video games we let them play, look at the tv shows we all watch. 

Umm, Leon, some of us don't send our kids to watch movies or let them play video games or let them watch TV, some of us actually raise our children.

Perhaps you and your friends do these things, but you do not, in any way, represent all Americans.

Sure it's not representative of ALL Americans but if you look at the revenues of these entertainment companies, they're raking it in, so you can reasonably argue that a fair number of Americans are buying into this garbage.

As for you specifically, sounds like you are doing the right thing and I applaud you for it considering how hard it is to avoid this trash when it is so prevelant in daily life.  I for one, don't have children, don't go to moives, don't watch tv shows, and don't play video games.  I just brought those up as examples.
