Wash. Monthly Blog Shows for Left, Name Calling = Political Analysis

Now With Updates, Kristol Responds to critics and Steve Benen responds to me!

Washington Monthly has a blog called Political Animal that is also picked up by the CBS News website. It is written by Kevin Drum, but recently has been guest penned by a former Clinton intern and Internet gadfly named Steve Benen who makes no bones about the fact that he is an extreme leftist. Looking over his Wash. Monthly blog posts shows that he also makes no bones about the fact that his chief mode of political analysis is to name call his opponents. None of his recent work, though, goes nearly as far as the hatred he displayed for conservative Bill Kristol, newly minted New York Times columnist and Editor of the Weekly Standard magazine. It looks like someone forgot to administer Stevie's distemper shots or something, but it does go to show that the left is pretty comfortable with wild-eyed name calling in place of real political discourse.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Benen calls Kristol a "cast off from Time magazine," a writer of "shallow, predictable tripe,"an embarrassment," a speaker with "bitter, sycophantic belligerence," a "thug," "clownish," and says that The New York Times has "damned standards and consequences" to have hired him. That's quite a litany of name calling all stuffed into one short post nearly half of which consists of pulled quotes from other sources. Benen calls Kristol that many names in only six short paragraphs three of which are merely sentences instead of full paragraphs.

Quite an achievement, really.

The amusing thing is that Benen was an intern in the Clinton White House speech writing office! Looks like young Stevie wasn't a very attentive intern, eh? Unless, he learned his potty mouth from Hillary who, form all accounts, was a screaming, lunatic while co-president in the 1990s.

Since Benen's blog post is little else than a screed penned by an infant tyro, I'll only bother with this one quote, one of the more egregious ones in the piece:

True, except now, one of the world's most prestigious news outlets has apparently given this thug space on the most valuable media real estate in existence.

It isn't surprising that a leftist in America resorts to calling his political opponent a "thug" as any glance at sites like the DailyKos and The Democratic Underground proves, but it is lamentable that the Washington Monthly, the Huffington Post and CBS News all give such a name caller a prominent place to show his childish, low-brow style of writing and make like it is serious political analysis.

Talk about a loss of "standards" and "damning the consequences," both which the left in America sadly dispensed with as long ago as the reign of Tip O'Neill as Speaker of the House during Reagan's terms in office.

**UPDATE NUMBER ONE**

New NYT columnist Bill Kristol laughs at the libs with their "heads exploding" over his new position at the extreme left, so-called "paper of record."

In an interview with Politico, Kristol said:

"I was flattered watching blogosphere heads explode. It was kind of amusing."

And followed up with:

"contribut[ing] to the diversity of the Times is a worthwhile goal. And anyone threatening to cancel subscriptions can toughen up and take it.”

Hilarious that the leftists can't take a little "diversity" of opinion, isn't it? Of course, that IS the more "civilized," more "caring," more "tolerant" left we are all used to, isn't it?

The "fascists."(LOL)

**UPDATE NUMBER 2**

Well, Stevie Benen has responded to me on his personal blog, The Carpetbagger Report it appears! And his reply smacks of a "me thinks he doth protest too much” variety, too.

And I briefly respond to him on my own blog at Publius' Forum. Go on over and check it out.

NYT the most valuable

NYT the most valuable media real estate in existence.?????

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Uh, Steve, have ya checked lately????

OK,got that out of the way.

That Benen could describe someone else as writing with "bitter, sycophantic belligerence," in the midst of that tirade is amazing.

Sounds like a classis case of Projection to me.

When leftists cannot

When leftists cannot dispute another point of view, they call him or her names--happens a great deal.  They're vacuous empty suits with nothing to contribute.

Liberalism is a convenient lie.

There's No Greater Waste Of Time

Then to give people like Benen and I'll throw in Ann Coulter, any kind of space for their venomous writings. I understand the meaning of far left and far right. What bothers me, in both of these cases, is that they have abandomed reasoned dialog for gutter humor that they think is funny because it sells books and gets them attention. I'm sure they're right regarding the sale of books but it remains, in my opinion, egregiously rude to dump their hatred on the public on what ever platform they have access to. Both sides have learned and respectable representatives who carry their messages far better then these two with their childish stupidity. One last thing, Benen is far off the mark on Kristol. Too bad he's unable to entertain any thought of opposing views, which automatically should eliminate him from receving any consideration for thoughtful dialog.

No Concessions to the Left.

"Then to give people like Benen and I'll throw in Ann Coulter"

Ann Coulter says some harsh things, but have you ever read one of her books? Half of them are endnotes.

Here's one example: Her book, "Treason," was a spiritual sequel to John Stormer's 1964 "None Dare Call it Treason." Well, she did - with the benefit of 40 years of revelations of just how the American Left had in the past, and continues to today, aid agents of murderous, failed ideologies.

I mean, I get it - she's angry because she's right, and has mountains of actual pesky facts, collated through actual research, viewed in actual historical context, to back up her assertions.

To throw her into the same bin with Leftist screechers who offer their bong-hit generated ideas as Facts and whose "historical context" is something along the lines of "Communism and the Beatles would have been SWEET if America and the Nazis hadn't RUINED it all!" isn't the right answer.

No, I know it's nice to be able to throw a bone to the leftists and say, "OK, OK, see, here's one of *ours* who goes too far, too. That means I'm balanced, and we can have a reasoned discourse!" But in so doing, we allow the value of facts and reality, and otherwise well-reasoned argument, to be dismissed just because the author hurt somebody's feelings. And nobody's better at manufacturing some sort of victim, or aggrieved status than the American Left.

So, don't do that - don't concede that, just because Ann Coulter says crazy stuff sometimes, that we can ignore the non-crazy (factual, right) stuff she says. That's just "moral-equivalency"-creep.

I agree....whether or not

I agree....whether or not you agree with her, Ann Coulter documents her view and facts with voluminous footnotes and bibliography. Whatever you think of her conclusions, her views are the result of prodigious research.

If Benen did half the research Coulter does, there is no way he could dismiss Kristol's opinion of the Khmer Rouge etc. with a straight face.

One of the funniest comments regarding Benen's screed was this, concerning Kristol, at Benen's "The Carpetbagger Report" by someone called "The Answer is Orange:" (emphasis added)

The neo-cons don’t make arguments or engage in debate the way sane
people understand it these actions
[sic] because to them, there is nothing to
argue or debate about. Bush Good, Liberals Bad. Neo-cons make
statements and then attack anyone who disagrees.

And that was presumably said in all seriousness.

Excuse me while I pick up my jaw off the keyboard......

This type of reaction from

This type of reaction from the left often has a commonality --- it is a rabid (thus irrational) attack based on fear.....Nothing scares them more than an articulate conservative with a brain. It is rather pathetic ---- very pathetic

Drum is not very bad

Looks like this "guest" blogger is wearing out his welcome mat. Drum occasionally hits a note of sanity in his off-key piano-punching. This guy Benen is a real Bolshie from the bad old days.

Well, he ACTS like a

Well, he ACTS like a "Bolshie from the bad old days." Problem is, the guy's a KID. He's barely old enough to drive and I wonder if he even shaves, yet?

Warner, he may be a kid to

Warner, he may be a kid to you and me (definitely to me LOL) but whatever his problem, youth ain't it (from his HuffPo bio):

Benen got his Master's at the George Washington University while
interning at the Office of Speechwriting in Bill Clinton's White House.
He has written direct mail for a major Democratic consulting firm,
worked as a communications director for a congressional campaign, and
for six y
ears, was part of the communications department at Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

The Clinton White House

No surprise that he worked for the Clintons. This is what they are all about-- and we're in for more of it if , God forbid , madam Hillary gets elected. How could any mature, responsible adult cast a vote for her? Benen is typical of her followers--immature, vicious, ignorant "liberals" of all ages.

BTW, Coulter and Kristol are extremely smart and well -educated.

NEVER, NEVER trust a "liberal"

Steve Benen

Blog on Brave leftie! His rubbish passes for intelligent comment to almost the entire spectrum on the left. And with it the delusion that this insanity will prevail politically in the end. If you are reading this Mr. Benen, prepare yourself for the coming disaster. When the Democrats fail to seize power your madness will split the Party and bring it to ruin. With it will go the house of cards known as liberalism. As Mr. Huston hints at very broadly, this kind of rhetoric is increasingly finding less and less acceptance in the political world.

No, its not available for Advertisements

Hmm, if I were this guy I'd be alittle more prudent. Because its only a matter of time before someone like me comes along and lands a helicopter on that forehead of his with the express purpose of digging for prehistoric beasts trapped in the rocky bedrock.

Benen is a Beast; Ann Coulter a Beauty!

Baboo's comment on Ann Coulter was right on! Okay, I sometimes think she goes 'round the bend' in her offhand comments, but when a total impostor like Andrew Sullivan intones that her joke about Edwards perv leanings was "hateful, truly hateful," it turns me into a fan of Ann. Ann's sometimes nasty asides always contain a couple of grains of ugly reality, like her comments on the Jersey crones preening & queening at Dem political events.

And as for her writing, Ann shows her U. of Michigan Law School education. Lots of facts the libtard 'intelligentsia' like the odious Arthur Schlesinger Jr & fellow 'historians' have washed away in writing their agitpreppie screeds.

Like the fact revealed by KGB records that both Jimmy Carter & Teddy Kennedy sending emissaries to the Kremlin in '83 to "head off 'world war III'" by sluicing funds to the Democratic Party. That and John Edwards' 'love child' don't see the light of day because it puts the perps & pervs of the Dem Party in a bad light.

I hope Ann blows the whistle on Rielle Hunter as RH enters her third trimester!

Right on

Right on. The truth be told, Ann Coulter scares almost EVERY commentator in the MSM because she is smarter than they are. Goes to show their own insecurities. It's why they resort to name-calling and ridicule.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Bill Kristol - A Conservative?

There is no question that Mr. Kristol is a "conservative" on foreign policy and military issues.

And, yes, he was Dan Quayle's chief of staff.

However, his positions on immigration, taxes, global warming, government spending, government activism, and free market capitalism can clearly be classified as "center-left."

Name Calling

Since this kid is in the name calling mood - I thought I'd throw in my two-cents. How bout we take up a collection and get this kid a year supply of proactiv?

Even better, how about a

Even better, how about a thesaurus and a dictionary!

I am absolutely loving the irony here, Warner

....loving it, I tells ya....   :^)
