AP Blaming US Border Agents for Illegals/Drug Dealer's Violence

Photo of Warner Todd Huston.

US border agents have been increasingly suffering physical attacks at the hands of drug traffickers and illegal entrants across the southern border, "nearly 1,000 times during a one-year period," AP reports. Naturally, this has caused the US border patrol to step up their replies and the levels of force they use to subdue these attacks -- after all, should our agents just take being attacked by flying rocks and bullets without reply? But, what does the AP report in theirs titled, "Border Patrol’s counteroffensive riles Mexico"? They report that the Mexicans are mad at us. AP makes it appear as if we are at fault because they are increasing in their level of violence to which we are forced to reply.

Check out the sympathy that the AP offers Mexicans living near the border...

The Border Patrol says its agents were attacked nearly 1,000 times during a one-year period along the Mexican border, typically by assailants hurling rocks, bottles and bricks. Now the agency is responding with tear gas and powerful, pepper-spray weapons, including firing into Mexico.

The counteroffensive has drawn complaints that innocent families are being caught in the crossfire.

"A neighbor shouted, 'Stop it! There are children living here," said Esther Arias Medina, 41, who on Wednesday fled her Tijuana, Mexico, shanty with her 3-week-old grandson after the infant began coughing from smoke that seeped through the walls.

First of all, AP quotes someone who claims they saw a "neighbor" who "fled" with her child, but does not interview the actual woman herself. AP broke the very first rule in reporting: verification. After that, the following sentence AP gives us is this one...

A helmeted agent on the U.S. side said nothing as he stood with a rifle on top of a 10-foot border fence next to the three-room home that Arias shares with six others.

This line falsely presents the American officer as some jack-booted, faceless, uncaring stormtrooper who thoughtlessly attacks poor women and children and who stays menacingly silent when confronted. But, in truth, these agents were attacked before the incident. A reply with non-lethal force to an attack does not deserve to be treated as somehow worse than or equal to what elicited this response. Not that AP lets that get in the way of a good over dramatization of a story.

AP goes on to repeatedly plead the Mexican's case against our beleaguered border patrol.

"We don't deserve this," Arias said. "The people who live here don't throw rocks. Those are people who come from the outside, but we're paying the price."

I have an idea Esther, have YOUR people band together and stop those "people who come from outside" from getting there in the first place. It's called community, Mrs. Arias. Or, vote the crooks who are allowing this out of office. You DO have a democracy, after all.

In any case, AP then goes on to flavor what has been happening there with more misleading wording.

Witnesses in Arias' neighborhood described eight attacks since August that involved tear gas or pepper spray, some that forced residents to evacuate.

This sentence reads as if these "attacks" were all perpetrated by American forces on poor, innocent Mexicans, but these are not "attacks" but RESPONSES to attacks on our guards.

The AP does give our side a small chance to try to explain the situation.

The Border Patrol's top official in San Diego, Mike Fisher, said his agents are taking action because Mexican authorities have been slow to respond. When an attack happens, he said, American authorities often wait hours for them to come, and help usually never arrives.

"We have been taking steps to ensure that our agents are safe," Fisher said.

Still, AP doesn't let the fact that our agents are being attacked on a weekly basis and that their lives are daily put in danger deter their desire to blame the USA. AP gives us more complaints from Mexicans about the non-lethal responses to attacks on US border patrol agents.

Robis Guadalupe Argumedo, a seamstress in Tijuana, said she has been startled by tear gas on four nights since Aug. 7, when her 12-year-old son suffered a nose bleed. That attack also shattered a window of her neighbor's car.

And did these "attacks" cause the nose bleed? No claim is made that they did, but the nose bleed is coupled with the tale of the "attack" to lead readers to relate the two together.

Argumedo, 31, said she shouted in protest across the border at a helmeted agent on Dec. 8 after opening her front door to a cloud of tear gas. "He said: 'I'm the policeman of the world and I can do what I want.'"

It is amazing how the AP reports this claim of what the "policeman" supposedly said! AP reports the words of this carping aMexican woman as if it is fact. There were no words on AP's part mitigating the factual nature of the claims with AP simply letting her words stand as gospel. Then they follow up with more unproven claims.

Benito Arias said his 19-year-old sister-in-law fainted during an apparent tear gas attack about two weeks ago. The woman, five months pregnant, was given oxygen at the hospital.

As I said, this report does give the US side of the story, but all sympathy is with the Mexicans and no attempt is made by the AP to remind readers that all the claims made are still unproven claims and not facts. The AP also made no attempt to prove that hospital visits by border Mexicans are up because of actions by our border agents, for instance and no other sources are presented to prove any particulars of harm to any innocents. AP repeatedly used the word "attacks" in describing US agent's actions when the truth is our border agents were RESPONDING to being attacked, not doing the attacking.

All in all, this report elicits sympathy for the Mexicans and causes scorn on our border agents. Worse, little effort is made to place the blame where it really belongs: on the drug traffickers and illegal entrants who are increasing their violence.

But, who could doubt that the AP wants to blame the USA, anyway?

Warner, the headline alone

Warner, the headline alone says it all, but it's not surprising from AP. The increased enforcement is depicted as the cause, rather than the result of the rock-throwing.

This is a typical tactic. The PLO throws rocks at Israeli soldiers, knowing they can only stand there or use their rifles. What are the border guards supposed to do? Oh, I forgot....they are supposed to just stand there and let everyone cross; then the Mexicans won't throw rocks at them.

I do sympathize with the Mexicans caught in the crossfire. But what do they expect? The woman quoted says, "This is a matter between government and government....They have to work out an agreement."

And we all know what our part of the agreement will be: we ignore anyone crossing the border illegally. But what about the Mexican government; what will they be expected to do?

Maybe the Mexican people in those border towns should demand that their own government send soldiers to protect them from Mexicans using their town as an illegal pipeline to the US.

A helmeted agent

AP uses this phrase at least twice: "A helmeted agent".

I think they have made a big, big mistake in their reporting, here. They left out "Jackbooted". How careless can you get? Fire that AP writer, or at least send him back to re-education camp.

Well, TnT, what with the

Well, TnT, what with the agent up there atop his watchtower, he probably couldn't see his feet. But you're right..it should be obvious they would wear jackboots. Aren't those standard issue down at the Border Agents' Training School?

No more AP for me

AP has lost all my respect until they start using the proper terms. Jackbooted is a respectable, well-worn description, and it surely can be used to describe our Agents, especially when the purpose is to portray their violent, abusive tactics on innocent, freedom-loving Mexicans. And, I want to see those pictures that AP is obviously hiding. Suffering; bullet holes in the doorways; funerals; and marches of course, lots of marches with everyone holding American flags and anti-Bush flags. All in living color, of course.

AP needs to send in their seasoned agents and teach these rookies how real reporting is done.

"responses to attacks ".

...well, obviously, responding to attacks is wrong.  (sarc/off)

Seriously, let's not overlook placing a good part of the blame for the increased attacks (and necessary responses) where it belongs.

President Bush, with his foot dragging on constructing the fence, his prosecution of Border Agents, and his wink-wink attitude toward enforcement, has helped create a sense of entitlement among the illegal border crossers.

Knowing all that, the would-be crossers have become more bold and aggressive in expressing anger at being prevented from exercising their "right" to cross the border.

Agreed, RJ.

Agreed, RJ.

But let's not forget others like President Reagan in 1986, and Bill Clinton, who signed amnesties in the 90's....here's the rundown of all the "one-time" amnesties that have convinced others that if they just get here, they can eventually become citizens.

Not just that...

The President just completed pardon-season, and he didn't pardon the 2 border agents who shot the smuggler in the ass. I'm amazed by it because O'Reilly's been going nuts for months, but I guess they've got some reason not to do it. I just hope it's legal, and not political...

I agree, sarc....I was

I agree, sarc....I was stunned that he didn't do that. But I harbor a fear that it was political...as in being loathe to antagonize the Mexican government.

sarcasmo, I know, isn't

sarcasmo,

I know, isn't that maddening...I just can't believe what is happening to those two men, still in prison while the President pardons common criminals. It is really quite a shame.

Thanks for that great link about granting amnesty, motherbelt

It's absolutely true that the blame can be shared by many in Congress and by several Presidents.

Two points, however:

First, the issue has come to a boil right now, and President Bush has exacerbated the situation rather than taking steps to resolve it.

Second, the link doesn't reveal that the largest common demominator in all of that amnesty granting is Ted Kennedy.  Beginning with the very first amnesty program in 1986, he has been absolutely obsessed with granting amnesty to illegals, and has used his considerable powers to make it happen.

Right on both points,

Right on both points, RJ.

McCain is right there with Ted Kennedy on the latest amnesty proposal. If he doesn't change his stance, he can say "Adios Amigo" to any chance he ever had of securing the Republican nomination.

Knowing all that, the

Knowing all that, the would-be crossers have become more bold and aggressive in expressing anger at being prevented from exercising their "right" to cross the border.

And let's add, shame on the USA for imagining it has something mythical like its "sovereignty" to uphold!!

Right you are RJ!

Right and I think that's

Right and I think that's why, as RJ says, the situation has come to a boil presently. It has been heating up little by little, for all the mentioned reasons.

"Spending Bill Shrinks Border Fence"

Quietly added to the proposed spending bill is the gutting of the "2006 Secure Fence Act."  The act mandated a two-tier fence at specificed locations.  Both mandates have been removed.

"As it's currently written, the omnibus language guts the Secure Fence Act almost entirely. Quite simply, it is unacceptable." -Rep. Peter T. King

More proof that neither Congress nor the President is serious about protecting our borders.

The AP is in bed with

The AP is in bed with America-hating marxists. Go figure.

If you all could indulge me

If you all could indulge me for a moment...I have a co-worker whose daughter-in-law is from India, she has two daughters still in India (with their father), it has taken her THREE YEARS to get her daughters to America. She said the paperwork is unreal, no one seems to know what they are doing. First it is one thing that is holding the Visa up, then it is another thing. Finally the mom went to back to India to get her daughters just this week.

The point I am trying to make is that the illegals practically waltz over the border and no one in our Government cares. Oh, and when they make it here illegally they get free healthcare! That is another story which I know a lot about...

msh, the pro-amnesty factions never admit

that the illegals are already clogging up the legal immigration system.   Granting amnesty will push even further to the back of the line many of those patiently attempting to enter the U.S. legally.

I ask you (rhetorically, of course), which group will make better U.S. citizens; those who obey the law or those who don't?

Personally, I am 100% FOR

Personally, I am 100% FOR making it really hard for immigrants to become Americans and bring their extended families over here. We SHOULD make it hard so that when they finally get it done it is more appreciated by the immigrant.

But, what we have is illegals ruining that and turning what should be relief and a sense of accomplishment in those who do it legally into hatred and disgust that they had to wait so long while these fetid illegals get by without a by-your-leave, free as you please!!

Illegals mess things up for EVERYONE including and especially other immigrants.

Dont buy into the lie that

Dont buy into the lie that all illegals just want to come to the USofA to have a better life either. Ive seen so many come over and turn their neighborhoods into little Mexicos its unreal. '

SPANISH OFFICIAL LANGUAGE

Why would any border patrol agent be stupid enough to perform his or her duties when several have been arrested and put in jail ?  The border Patrol has been smacked down over and over by the liberal left wing media, so much so that it is now impossible to close the border. America should make spanish the official language open up the borders and surender to Mexico. America is going down without a shot being fired because too many people such as the associated pricks want to be politically correct. Most imagrants from Mexico do not asimilate and learn the culture and language, we are supposed to change to accomidate them.

the next step...

is lining the borders with tanks.

better alternative..

just put an open bounty on 'em, I bet I could get a few hundred of my fellow veterans to wander down to the border for a bag limit of illegal invaders

This was very interesting

This was very interesting "Mexico's acting consul general in San Diego, Ricardo Pineda, has insisted that U.S. authorities stop firing onto Mexican soil" because it mentions nothing about what the Mexivcans are doing to stop the attacks from Mexico to the USA.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

No surprise with the AP

They have a left wing agenda and have for quite a while. What really bothers me is our own congress passed a bill for the fence but are dragging their feet on paying for it.Homeland Security  is takeing their sweet time about putting it up.Mayors and other local and state politicians are trying to derail it as well as buissness. The  msm is portraying the illegals as farm workers and doing only the work Americans wont do.Forget the fact that many work in construction and processing plants. It all comes down to this.

  1. Dems (Anti Worker)want votes
  2. Repubs(Chamber Of Commerce) want cheap labor
  3. Unions want due paying members
  4. Churches more people in the pews
  5. Buisnesses cheap labor without the cost of running a legitimate buisness.Undercutting those that do.

All Americans pay for it.Doesnt matter about race, ethinic or anything else.It cost us.

  1. Higher taxes
  2. Social Security accounts being used and screwed up by illegals
  3. Overcrowded class rooms
  4. The cost of educating illegals
  5. Hospitals passing on the cost of treating illegals to Americans
  6. Wages for American working people kept down
  7. Legitament buisness loseing money due to ones that hire illegals being able to underbid them.

When are we going to stop are own goverment from selling us out.

I missed it, was the interview material submitted by Jesse Macbeth? It sounds a lot like his Excellent Adventures In Iraq story.

Maybe it's just me, but I

Maybe it's just me, but I always thought when one country invaded another, it was casus belli for war.

We know that it's not just the poor peasants, who throw rocks, that are the problem. There have been many skirmishes between the border guards and armed Mexican militia. (or at least Mexicans dressed as such)

I doubt any President would ever have the backbone, but seems to me the right thing to do would be to put troops on the border with orders to stop the incoming by any means necessary. And if Mexico didn't like it, too bad!
