Helen Thomas Says You Bloggers are 'Dangerous'

I don't know... I don't feel that dangerous. But, gee, I guess I am? Well I might be, at least according to Helen Thomas, one of the most uncivil "reporters" in all of journalism. Apparently she has proclaimed that citizen journalists and bloggers are "dangerous" on a HuffPo blog of December 4. HuffPoster Seema Kalia reported an exchange with the equine visaged Thomas where she raised alarm over her fear of the common American citizen and that terribly annoying Internet thingie. Yes, folks she thinks that if you are a blogger or Internet writer you have no sense of "ethics" and you are "Dangerous." One wonders if she really knows any journalists at all if she thinks they show any sign of "ethics"?

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

As Tim Graham reported, Seema Kalia, relied on Thomas for her first entry in a proposed series titled "My favorite mistake" in which folks Kalia deems worthy of her focus will recount the mistake that "taught them the most." Ostensibly this little foray into feels-goodism is meant to "teach" us all something it appears. Unfortunately for Kalia, Thomas miserably fails to give the entry any pop psychological umph for her fist little attempt. It seems that the woman who is constantly badgering government officials to admit their mistakes has proclaimed that she, herself, has been entirely perfect since she began her career some time in the late Pleistocene period.

Helen Thomas: I don't have any mistakes to tell you about.

No? Nothing? Not even her sense of fashion is a mistake? At least as far as she is here to tell you, anyway.

But, while the interview fails to perform to the stated purpose of making us all warm and gushy inside because our favorite personages can admit that they are fallible, it does succeed at one thing. It is a wonderful showcase of Thomas's arrogance along with her hyper sense of paranoia.

After telling us she has never made a mistake, Thomas goes on to suspect a HuffPo blogger of trying to make her look bad. Kalia tries to explain the purpose of the article to the aged scribe. "The spirit of this interview is really to explore the role of mistake-making as part of the growth of people who are really successful at what they do," Kalia says. But Thomas is having none of it. "No, no, no...you're looking for something else; you want people to flagellate themselves," she suspiciously replies. To which our sycophantic HufPoster assures her that, "There are many people I'd like to see flagellated in Washington, but you are not among them."

I won't go much further into Helen's hypocrisy on that point as Tim covered this part of the Kalia/Thomas interview well and, of course, most of the interview is meaningless jabber. But one short exchange from this leading figure of the fossilized media establishment does reveal the same sort of arrogance that we chronicle here every day.

After Kalia discusses reporter's mistakes she asks Thomas about the new media.

Kalia: Do you think technology is changing that? That a good reporter will always find a venue because there are so many media outlets now?

Thomas: No, but I do think it is kind of sad when everybody who owns a laptop thinks they're a journalist and doesn't understand the ethics. We do have to have some sense of what's right and wrong in this job. Of how far we can go. We don't make accusations without absolute proof. We're not prosecutors. We don't assume.

Kalia: So if there's this amateur league of journalists out there, trying to do what you do...

Thomas: It's dangerous.

There you have it Newsbusters. YOU have no ethics... and coming from one such as Thomas that really means something. I guess we can't even use those wretched laptops to look the word up on Wikpedia, huh?

So, let me take a moment to revel in my "dangerousness."

OK, I'm done for now. But I'll have to warm my pusillanimous 'puter up to find some more trouble later, though.

In any case, this is precisely the sort of attitude on the part of the old media that has driven their market share to an ever dwindling number of customers over the past 10 years. The arrogance that Thomas displays against you, the average American, is palpable. Even CBS News blogger Matthew Felling was a bit amused by this business on his Public Eye blog post of December 6.

Felling joked that Thomas wasn't at all going for the everyman as a journalist theory. (Emphasis in original)

Well, not that it should come as too much of a surprise, but old school White House scribe Helen Thomas isn’t drinking that “everybody’s a journalist!” kool-aid.

So, you untrained, ethically confused bloggers should give up the notion that you could be in any such exalted position as being considered a "journalist." You should leave the real writing to the professionals, doncha know? After all, you wouldn't want to be "dangerous" now would you?

Well, Warner, YOU may not be dangerous, but there's Tim, that Insomniac Internet Goon......

HELL-EN...

Gee, Helen wants only the elites of the Washington press corps to have their say, who knew? I have some advice for the old horse, shut up about bloggers & other new media types, then look at the trend in the media.

You work for a newspaper, in another 100 years, nobody will have seen a newspaper. Consider yourself lucky to have gotten your start in the media at a time of very limited compitition. You would never make it today, drop to your knees & give thanks to God you at the end of your career now instead of trying to break in.

When Helen says...

"No, no, no...you're looking for something else; you want people to flagellate themselves..." she sounds a whole lot like White House Press Secretaries have sounded over the years. I'm pretty sure the irony's lost on her, though. And I'll stick with my own "dangerous" ethics over Helen's, thanks.

Now we can add "no sense of irony" to her mistake list.

Doesn't Helen know that everyone with a laptop is also a doctor, lawyer, and Indian Chief?

Gee Helen, just 'cause you sat in the front row of WH pressers for a couple centuries doesn't make YOU the freakin President!!!!!

"Gee Helen, just 'cause you

"Gee Helen, just 'cause you sat in the front row of WH pressers for a couple centuries doesn't make YOU the freakin President!"

It doesn't make her a journalist, either. When was the last time she just asked a question to garner information instead of inserting an editorial comment? There are very few journalists anymore, and Helen is not one of them. Neither was/are Dan Rather, Brian Williams, Chris Matthews, Katie Couric, etc. People like Tim, Noel, Warner, Michelle Malkin, Charles Johnson, etc., fit the definition of "journalist" a lot better than people (I'm using the term loosely here) like Helen Thomas.

"A communist is someone who reads Marx. An anti-communist is someone who understands Marx." Ronald Reagan

What is sad is someone who is suppose to report the news tries to create it.

Just call me Maverick :-)

Gee, neither Helen Thomas, nor the journalism likes me because I am dangerous?

To quote Maverick:

"THAT'S RIGHT!  Helen...I AM DANGEROUS!!!"

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

The Helen Thomas school of .... uh, er, 'journalism':

"You'll read what I want you to read, written the way I think it should be written... and LIKE it!"

Helen Thomas is a liberal hack, and is screeching because she has now become irrelevant.

that's the nub of it

So-called journalists like Thomas have been left on the side of the road by faster moving technology and folks that know how to use it and she (they) can't stand it. The attacks against internet news generators rises to a crescendo every time the Lame Stream Media gets caught doing something unethical. No one is supposed to challenge their imperial right to decide what are the facts and what is news. Bah humbug!

Keep on blogging!

Helen Thomas Says You Bloggers are 'Dangerous'

  She is right,we are dangerous.

We are a danger to her,for the simple reason,we question her facts of what she writes.

Yes how dare we question her.

Beat me to the Punch!

Spot on my friend!

I completely agree with Helen 100%!!!

Yes we are dangerous to Helen's little world. No longer will the media go unchallenged.  "when everybody who owns a laptop thinks they're a journalist and doesn't understand the ethics."

I think if I were in the presences of a journalist making this comment there would be an out break of projectile vomiting. People like Helen Thomas image journalist ethics and integrity means you tell the part of the story you want and forget the part that doesn’t fit your agenda! It has been happening for years, but the days of going unchallenged are OVER Helen. Yes we are dangerous, dangerous to the idea that you and the rest of MSM will go unchallenged.

So don’t go away mad, JUST GO AWAY!

Hellen is just worried

That the bloggers and "Citizen journalists" are not propperly indoctrinated into the socialist ideology as they should be by having gone through a School of Journalism. She is worried that the various stories that the public has access to won't have the required left tilt and that some stories and issues that should be ignored will be reported. This could serve to undermine the 50+ years of work that the liberal socialists have accomplished.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

no no no helen just had a slip of the tongue

she ment to say her bloomers are dangerous and we all agree.

i'm so glad we have michelle maulkin as a conservative face compared to liberals helen thomas. the comparisons between those two ladies are as distinct as the ideologies and the promise of both of those agendas.

LOL @ Helen

And she publishes this statement on HuffPo of all places?

Sounds like she just thinks Republican bloggers are bad.

Day of the Dinosaur --- Helen Thomas speaks

Thomas: " No, but I do think it is kind of sad when everybody who owns a
laptop thinks they're a journalist and doesn't understand the ethics."

No less sad to realize that every journalist with an agenda thinks he/she is a genius.

And ethics? Who's she kidding?

Thomas: "We do have to have some sense of what's right and wrong in this job. Of
how far we can go. We don't make accusations without absolute proof.
We're not prosecutors. We don't assume."

What utter nonsense! Apparently she doesn't read a major newspaper or watch the network news anymore.

Just when you think Helen Thomas has reached the bottom of the irrelevence pit, she digs further.

This "We don't make

I have to agree with Helen Thomas on bloggers are dangerous.  Anybody who is willingly posting that picture with out any warning is very dangerous.

My husband read the newspapers and magazines. I read bloggers.  When we conversed, I find that he does not have the "rest of the story" so to speak.  We used to subscribe to Newsweek, Time, National Geographic, Popular Science, Popular Mechanic, PC World and USA.  We now has Popular Science, Popular Mechanic and PC World.

I think that covers it.

I would imagine that Helen would like for all bloggers to graduate from "Pravda" truth and justice school before blogging. We just can't have people posting on the internet, unless they have been approved by the editors from "Pravda."

Hypocrite

Helen Thomas can't think of a mistake she'd like to share when asked?

Well isn't this a case of "what goes around, comes around"!

In April of 2004 President Bush was asked during a national televised, prime-time news conference to name a mistake he had committed during his presidency.  Bush couldn't think of one at the time.  Helen Thomas, and the rest of her MSM comrade jackals, pounced on this and wringed all the juice she could:

"The president appeared totally flummoxed when asked to name one. He hemmed and hawed and aw-shucked, suggested that such a question was better left to historians."

"Well, let me try to help. Let's start with his invasion of Iraq."

"Maybe after June, the president will find time to ponder whether he has made any mistakes."

Be very careful Helen.  I am sure there are people who know your skeletons and will delight in exposing your hypocracy.  Maybe after the New Year you'll find time to ponder whether you've made any mistakes.

Kettle-Pot and Glass Houses.

Any chance she will be more understanding of those being questioned?  I don't think so either.

Now she's really going to dislike us internutters.

Killing them with kindness isn't working.  Time to get scrappy with the Donkeys.

Of course Helen and the MSM

Of course Helen and the MSM think we are dangerous, to them a citizen with a laptop asking questions to determine the facts is like a child wielding a gun and indescriminately pulling the trigger saying bang, bang your dead!

In their world view, questions that don't bring forth facts that support the agenda are unethical.  Propaganda must be carefully and thoughtfully crafted to create the desired impression.  Having citizens ask questions or pull up contrary facts destroys the whole effort.  Therefore there can't be any interaction that allows the citizen to respond to the assertions made by the MSM.  We saw this in the Soviet Union with the VOA.  Propaganda is only believable when there is no contrary view to challenge the assertions and get people to see the contradictions just under the surface.

Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity. dscott's corollary: The line between malice and stupidity is called depraved indifference.

POOR HELEN

Poor Helen she can't help it, you should all be ashamed. This poor woman has obviously fallen out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down (Several Times)....Seriously if I woke up with that next to me I would cut off my arm with a hacksaw so as not to wake her....

geeesh!

"I do think it is kind of sad when everybody who owns a laptop thinks they're a journalist and doesn't understand the ethics.  We do have to have some sense of what's right and wrong in this job. Of how far we can go. We don't make accusations without absolute proof. We're not prosecutors. We don't assume."

This is so loaded, I can't tackle each point individually... although I'll try...  But she's totally confused about reality.

First, given the total LACK of ethics I see in the products of modern "journalists", I don't think I'm a journalist, nor would I WANT to be considered one!! So much for that self-inflated sense of importance.

Second, the "ethics" she alludes to are also delusions of grandeur. Whatever standards "newspaper writers" must adhere to were put in place by their publishers in order to avoid running afoul of slander and libel lawsuits and other constitutional potholes.

Third, regarding that "some sense of what's right and wrong in this job" - most of us ordinary folks (read: those who think and write intelligently without certification papers from some school of socialist indoctrination) learned a sense of right and wrong when we were children, and we learned it from our parents and families and spiritual communities. We did not need to have some self-important writing school tell us what's right or wrong. As for what's right or wrong "in this job", why the distinction, as if what's right or wrong is somehow different "in this job" from what is right or wrong in every other aspect of one's life. This is another clue that there's a double standard in operation in the minds of those in the MSM - and that they view themselves above the rest of us.

As for the rest of the assertions, I'm not going to tear each apart. I figure we are all aware of how flimsy they are, and can rattle off a list of examples to refute each one of them. But I will summarize my view that these again reveal media elitism. And as such, they have no credibility. (She really does need a reality check! She probably believes CNN truly IS "fair and balanced"...)

I'm an ordinary citizen, using the tools of communication at my disposal, to converse and discuss issues of the day with my fellow citizens.

On the whole, I don't see any difference between those of us on blogs and forums nowadays from those folks who gathered in the town square or in a tavern or inn, to discuss the news events of the day.

In my view, the role of the media is to report the facts of the story. Period. Commentary is for the rest of us - we each have an opinion (as the old saw goes), and regardless of how it may stink, we are not only entitled to it, but we are entitled to express it to anyone who will listen.

Hopefully, rather than just talking to express ourselves, we engage with each other to examine thoughts, reveal the truth, and help us make better decisions.

The blogosphere is the modern town meeting, and we will participate to whatever degree our lights shine, and we will not be silenced. We are exercising the democratic process, where we each have a voice and we use it. ("Sad"? What's sad about that?)

And there I think is the root of Helen's problem! She is accustomed to pontificating, to telling others "we have looked into the story, and here's what you should think about it."

We are not dolts and don't need to be told what to think. We read and sift through and filter tons of information each day in order to understand the events of the day and their significance to our lives. We are accustomed to being confronted with and evaluating many alternate points of view. It's our way of communicating, and it's called "dialog", not diatribe (like this is getting to be...oops, am I sounding like a "journalist"?)

We are the wave of the future. This is the new way of participating in our communities. The old ways are going, and are almost gone.

What I think is kind of sad is when everybody who says they're a journalist doesn't understand they're obsolete.

Please stop!

Will you please stop putting her picture on this site! Your killing me!

I'll second that one...

Or at least not THAT picture. Don't they have something taken back in like 1909 when she was about 40 or so?

It is dangerous to Ms Thomas' being perceived as a feisty, yet fair journalist.
