CBS Veteran Suicide Numbers Bogus?

  • Bookmark and Share

On the CBS "Early Show" on Nov. 13th, co-host Julie Chen claimed that there was "an alarming suicide rate among veterans" of the Iraq/Afghanistan conflicts. CBS then aired a report that went on to claim that the suicide rate for our troops had wildly climbed. Fellow NewsBuster Kyle Drennen had his doubts about the report when the show originally aired and now comes an editorial by oftentime military reporter Michael Fumento further casting large amounts of skepticism on the CBS report.

The CBS show specifically wanted to make it seem like Iraq war vets are the ones that have seen these outrageously rising suicide rates. Reporter Armen Keteyian included in his report this opener:

Staff Sergeant Justin Reyes spent a violent year serving in Iraq...Medical records show Justin suffered severe psychological trauma after witnessing "multiple dead" and having to "sort through badly mutilated bodies." Earlier this year, one month after separating from the Army, Justin hanged himself with a cord in his apartment, at just 26...families recently sat down to talk about losing loved ones, all veterans of Iraq, to suicide...Mia Sagahon's boyfriend, Walter, shot himself at age 27 about a year and a half after he came back from Iraq.

Clearly CBS is pinning these so-called high numbers on the war on terror.

But, Fumento comes out now to throw some cold water on CBS's inflamed claims and give us some much needed facts to ponder. Initially remarking that the statistics that CBS arrived at were had by their own reckoning, not that of any third party agency that might be less biased than CBS, Fumento wonders how those numbers were arrived at?

Problem is, we have absolutely no way of verifying the CBS data nor how the network claims it collected the info. CBS News admits to collecting the data itself, rather than relying on an independent outside party. It also concedes its rate is "much higher" than that in an uncompleted Department of Veterans Affairs study.

Like CBS, Fumento focussed on the age group of the 20 through 24 Vets that CBS claimed were most vulnerable and found a conflict between CBS's claims and that of other sources.

For example, CBS put special emphasis on vets of the current wars. "One age group stood out," it said: "veterans age 20 through 24, those who have served during the War on Terror. They had the highest suicide rate among all veterans, estimated between two and four times higher than civilians the same age."

CBS said the suicide rate of these young vets was 22.9 to 31.9 per 100,000 people.

Which looks very strange next to the data on active duty soldiers in the War on Terror.

Last month, the Army released a report finding that the suicide rate among these GIs in 2006 was 17.3 per 100,000 troops -- rather lower than CBS's rate for veterans. Why would soldiers who were recently on active duty be killing themselves at a much higher rate than those still serving?

Fumento also found that the CBS claim that the suicide rate was "two to four times higher" than corresponding civilian rates is untrue.

More important still, the Army study corrected for some key demographic facts -- notably, that the military is largely male and that men are much likelier to commit suicide than women are. Among civilians who match the overall age, gender and race profile of the U.S. Army, the suicide rate was 19 per 100,000 -- higher than for the troops.

So, even if CBS's numbers for younger vets' suicides hold up, the rate isn't twice the relevant civilian one -- let alone the "two to four times higher" that CBS claimed.

Fumento goes into more depth and you really should check out the link to read the whole thing.

What we have, though, is a TV station presenting wildly inflated numbers, uncorrected by demographic factors, all presented in order to sensationalize the important work of assuring the mental health of our vets in an obvious effort to discredit both the government and the war on terror.

No agenda there, eh?

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

After the Rather-gate fiasco why would any sane person believe anything coming out of CBS?  I wonder now how many other bogus stories were put out there by Rather and even Cronkite just to screw up some Republican candidate?  How many years has this been going on?  What did they know and when did they know it?  What’s the frequency Kenneth???

Dan Rather would be proud.

These people at CBS don't get it.

they got their propoganda out and that's all that matters

they planted their seeds in the minds of the public and that's all that matters to them. they don't care if it's true all they care about is pushing their "it's good to be a loser anti war" agenda on the public. regretably the mass public is stooopid enough to believe it because they are too stooopid to see the bias and too stooopid to see how agendas are slipped into the "news". these are the same people that keep the pills that burn off fat while you sleep industry alive or that buy samurai swords on late night tv for 3 easy payments of 19.99, (it has a dragon painted right on the blade), or the ultimate sales pitch scam, global warming. the masses don't understand the difference between marketing and substance, and the media has picked up on it and taken advantage of it to slip in their political agendas in the "news" to mislead the public.

they accomplished exatly what they wanted and nothing can be done, they lied and got away with it and will smirk in anyones face about it who stands up to them and say what are you going to do about it, we can get away with it all day long.

Disturbing

It's bad enough that these sobs traffic these stories, which can only demoralize our troops and get more people killed. But they have the gall to cook the "data"?

And then they say they are "against the war, but FOR the troops".

Are these people insane?

I read these posts and I

I read these posts and I wonder..  how is it that they come up with these story lines?  These people - the Armen Keteyian types - they are always on the lookout for some new emotional angle, and when they find it, like with this suicide angle (it's not a story, it's just an anti-war angle), they just throw out lies because they know that most of the viewing public will not check it out.  Thanks, Warner!

Armen Keteyian - wasn't he an O.J. groupie?

Nothing new under the sun.

Nothing new under the sun. Last week they tried the desertion angle. There is nothing these POS's won't say or do to further their agenda (read lies). They pulled the suicide angle during and right after the Vietnam war throwing in mental illness, homelessness, PTSD, drug addiction, crime etc ad nauseaum. I really hate these sanctimonious traitorous jerks. I have read books where the psycho killer was an Iraqi vet (closed the book right at that revelation) and a TV show where Iraqi vets were robbing banks. They (dis?)honestly think they are not traitors.

Last time I saw Armen, he was a sideline reporter for NFL games. Musta gotten a promotion to hard news.

Paging "Professor Truth"...

The Little Professor was on this story like Bill Clinton on an intern last week. This is apparently where he got his "15,000 soldiers dead" figure.

What bothered me about See-BS's "methodology" in this case was that they dud not taki into consideration how many of these suicides were of people pre-disposed to doing something like that-depression, mental illness, etc.

Del,, the 15000 dead number was an estimate

On the Randi rhodes radio show yesterday, she stted that the pentagon is covering up the fact that 150000 soldiers received brain concussion injuries.  I have no other surces for this, but it true, it would be astounding.  Other unverified stories stated that injured soldiers were denied their signing bonuses.  If true, this is unconscionable

Did she say 15,000 or

Did she say 15,000 or 150,000??

A congressman is

making that claim of 150,000. It doesn't say what criteria they're using to define brain injury, but they must be pretty liberal -- maybe headache or ringing in the ears.

Jeez-o-Pete --

Being facetious just gets harder all the time.

Troops eat dead -- claims.

I also hear that some concerned folks are claiming American troops are so short of food, they are eating the dead!!!!

If true, this is a scandal -- and heads should roll forthwith.

"If" true?

"if?"  Then why did you crow about it?  Oh, wait....the fringe left believes in "the seriousness of the charge", not the evidence.

Oh well, Randi Rhodes, we

Oh well, Randi Rhodes, we all know if SHE says it, it HAS to be true!

Time for a 'nuther bloody mary!

Suicide rates at CBS

I wonder if the suicide rates at CBS and CBS News have risen since Ms. Couric jumped on board?

(The first time in history a rat jumped ABOARD a sinking ship!)

I hear she's a foul mouthed harridan to the little "people". I know I'd probably go postal and kill myself if she was my boss.

This is all part of the

This is all part of the liberal agenda for the military. It just dident work out the way they invisioned. They did not take into account the type of person that joins the military. Most of the undesirables are filtered out in basic or other training stages. Some are filtered later, but not many. The MSM always assumes that those in the military are mentaly unstable, and in their minds, will do things like kill themselves, more than the stable civilian population. They just dont get it.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!
