Seattle PI Columnist: 'I Understand' Burning 'Oppressive' Churches

**WITH UPDATE**
Dorothy Parvaz, a columnist, blogger and member of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer editorial board, posted a short P-I blog post in which she sympathetically says she understands how someone would want to burn a church down because it is "an oppressive institution." And she isn't just shrugging her shoulders over the threatened arson of a church, but the planned arson of San Francisco's Grace Cathedral, a landmark building on Nob Hill. Is there a little hatemongering going on against religion in the Post-Intelligencer? Sure seems so.

We've met Miss Parvaz here on Newsbusters before, the last time when she said that GOP voters were "White, male, middle-aged and slightly stupid," and intimated that terrorism was nothing to worry about by calling the WOT "Bush's asinine 'war on terror.'" Well, this time she is ready to "understand" the burning of churches in a blog post about the arrest of a mentally suspect man named Paul Addis who was the goof responsible for the too early torching The Man figure at the last pot-head festival Burning Man 2007. This time, though, he meant to burn down the famous Frisco Cathedral.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

After describing Addis' arrest, Parvaz sympathetically assesses his newest target:

On the one hand, I can understand the power of the image to someone who sees the church as an oppressive institution. On the other hand...it's still arson. And given how fires can get out of hand, there's a chance that this little stunt could have damaged other property and hurt some folks.

"On the other hand... it's still arson"?? On the other hand? Someone needs to tell Parvaz that there isn't any "other hand" in a case where someone is threatening to burn down any building, much less a church. It's wrong to commit arson on EVERY hand, not just the "other" one.

She further relays her hate for religion by only worrying that burning down the Grace Cathedral would be bad because the fire might "get out of hand" and harm other nearby structures.

Besides her sympathy to Addis for destroying those "oppressive" churches, Parvaz seems to offer him sympathy because he is a "performance artist." In fact, she seems to treat the whole incident rather lightly. And even her advice to our nutty arsonist and so-called "performance artist" is filled with hate for churches.

Perhaps he should have settled for painting a picture of a burning church rather than trying to destroy an actual historic landmark. That wouldn't be performance art, I guess (unless he created the painting in public or something), but at least it wouldn't be a felony.

It is amazing that a person so filled with hate for the ideas and institutions of the Heartland of America is given such a prominent role at the newspaper of one of the West Coast's largest cities.

Imagine, if you will, what kind of hew and cry would occur if a newspaper would host the work of a person that said that all Democrats were "slightly stupid" or excused the burning of Universities or Newspaper offices because they were "oppressive institutions." Does anyone imagine that the hate of such a column would be so easily excused should it be as extremely from the right as Parvaz' work is from the left?

More to the point can you imagine the condemnation that would be visited on a newspaper that might have on their editorial board a columnist that comes from as far right as Parvaz comes from the far left? There would be a cacophony like you've never heard before. For an example, imagine if Ann Coulter were to be hired for the editorial board of the New York Times. It would stir that kind of hatred on the left if an arch rightist would be placed on the editorial board of any national newspaper.

What ifs aside, it is sure that no one on the right would get nearly the same consideration and leeway that this extreme Seattle leftist gets. That is 100% sure.

**UPDATE** 11/04/07

Dorothy Parvez... um, I mean Parvaz (apologies there, my sloppiness for sure), has answered to my Newsbusters post about her outrageous blog post supporting the arsonist cum "artist," Paul Addis, on the Seattle Post-Intelligencer blog.

At the top, here, I'd like to say that I wish I had been able to be on the Dori Monson show on KIRO, but the show's producer sent me an email inviting me on only hours before the show aired. Unfortunately, my personal schedule finds me asleep roughly between 11AM and 8PM, so when the email arrived I was asleep. And I did not see that invite until about 8PM that evening. I would have enjoyed appearing on the show as I have so many other radio programs.

In any case, go on over to the Seattle P-I and have a read of Miss Parvaz' reply to our story as she tries to explain herself away using the last refuge for most on the left: the "I was only joking" defense. (Saying of her original post that it was "tongue-in-cheek.)

Of her back tracking, I have little to say. But one comment stood out, showing her hate once again. Miss Parvaz suggested that, instead of the old Valentine's Day photo, we use a photo of her in which she is wearing a Muslim Hijaab because, in her words, it would "better serve" our purpose.

What purpose might that be, Miss Parvaz?

After all, we are sure you are a lover of religion... not that we would ever employ that filthy tongue-in-cheek stuff to describe that deep, heartfelt love.

But, should Miss Pavaz wish to shoot us over an updated photo of her, we'd be happy to post it. Maybe she has a nice photo of her burning a flag, or a Bible, or maybe a nice photo of her throwing a molotov cocktail at a "peace" march somewhere.... oops. There's that tongue-in-cheek stuff again. Sorry.

Oppressive religions

Where do people get the idea that religions in this country are "oppressive?" Unless I'm mistaken, we still live in a country where religious authorities can't imprison you for disobedience. If you're conflicted about what religions teach, you're free to ignore them.

Like a parent, a religious official's only leverage is the ability to bless or condemn.

  • But that leverage only becomes powerful when someone respects how the parent or official feels. The blessing is only as powerful as the degree to which the child or parishioner values it.
  • And, like a parent, a religious blessing is not something the child can demand. As a father, my blessing is mine to give, as I see fit. My children can't compel me to bless whatever they're doing. It's my choice, not theirs. Grace is not earned.

That's why an emotional hatred of the church's "oppression" is really just a neurosis. If the parishioner didn't respect the church's blessing, they would just ignore whatever the church says. The neurotic conflict is that they do value the church's blessing, but they want it on their terms, validating their beliefs and behaviors. When the church refuses to bless their beliefs, they have a conflict they can't resolve ... to either abandon the church or their own beliefs. That's where the anger and frustration comes from. (And unfortunately, the fires ...)

Your words are so

Your words are so evidently, simplistically, compactly and overtly correct that I continue to be amazed at how ridiculous folks that bloviate this angle are even listened to let alone given a bully pulpit from which to proselytize their disconnect from reality.

Killing them with kindness isn't working.  Time to get scrappy with the Donkeys.

The slightly stupid Parvaz

The slightly stupid Parvaz understands the psychology of someone who wold burn a church for its oppresive nature?  No one is forced to join, go or support any church, Parvaz.  A church can oppress you as much as a box of kleenex.

Liberalism is a convenient lie.

It's always attacks against Christians

It's always a church these people go after. If these writers and religious haters would think a little bit I'd imagine they've had little to no oppression of their rights due to religion. I have yet to see a Christian religion (or any religion for that matter) in this country oppress anyone...as it was said you are free to go to whatever church you want and believe whatever you want. It just reminds me that Christ said the world would hate him and his church and we get that verified almost every day in the media.

any religion?

not to strike flint against steel here, folks, but have you read anything about the fundamental muslim atrocities in this country as of late?  I don't have links, I'm sorry say, but be careful not to lump all religions into the non-oppression group.  the grievances against women by fundamental muslims world over are an embarrassment to peaceful religion.

Oppressive???? So when is

Oppressive???? So when is Parvaz going to write her column saying she can understand why people would want to burn down a Mosque?

I would guess, as soon as she can arrange to go into self-imposed exile.

Makes me want to commit

Makes me want to commit arson on the building that houses Seattle Post-Below Intelligencer.

Oh, wait, though, I know it's arson, and there is no other hand.

Bomb through her window

Well, being that she is all but committing those horrible acts herself, is it ok if somebody throws a bomb through her living room window? Can we understand that? Oh, wait, I forgot. Christians have yet to commit such horrible acts of violence. It's something called self control and self responsibility. Two things the liberals are completely bankrupt of. Oh, and morals. Why is it always the 'peace loving' people in this country the first group to behave violently?

"I don't give DAMN what you think you're entitled too."

  They don't get it...

They don't get it... the church is it's congregation, NOT the building. Burning down the building does NOT destroy the church, just the building.

Isn't it ironic?

They only call Christianity "oppressive" because it is the only religion where it's your choice. To the atheists and humanists, it's a terrible thing to have the opposing view be so tolerant and non-overbearing. They need to call it oppressive to perpetuate the lie that they are "resisting".

To them it is a terrible thing that there is an ideology that defines right and wrong and then (gasp) points out various behaviors and catagorizes them into the two. "You see those people over there, they are doing wrong. You see those people over there, they are doing right. It's your choice what you do."

My GOD! How oppressive!

Burning Black Churches

I suppose this slack-titted gorgon would find it okay if a black southern church burned down.

Or maybe she would stridently demand that the national guard be dispatched and arrest every redneck within the area that has a confederate flag sticker on his pickup.

I'm just guessing here.

(For the record, I think any racist who burns ANY church should be thrashed soundly and locked up)

I have to wonder

I wonder if they would be so blase if someone were to suggest burning down the Seattle PI for it's oppressively biased opinions?

Let me help

Let me help on this. This persecution of God's Church is nothing new. As a matter of fact it is ancient. Christians are very well aware of where it comes from and where it is attempting to go.

This young lady is allowing herself to act as the tool of something that she has no concept of. She is not the first and she will not be the last. We should pray for her soul which is obviously in great peril; although she will deny it.

And so it goes. We fear not the end result because we have read the book and we know how it ends.

Doesn't this nutjob,

Doesn't this nutjob, Parvez, realize that one of the premier recreational actrivities of the Ku Klux Klan was burning 'oppressive churches'?   Nazis burned Synongogues.  Muslims in Yugoslavia have been burning Christian Churches under the noses of the EU "peacekeepers".  Bolsheviks burned churches.  Attila the Hun burned Churches.  By excusing a plot or an overt attempt to burn a Catholic Church because she doesn't care for it's doctrines, she clearly identifies herself with these other thugs.

Clear message here:  Leftists = thugs and arsonists

Parvaz

If Parvaz’s name were not mentioned in the article, I would have thought it was Rosie O’Donnell making such a remark. We, of course, know why O’Donnell hates religion.

Might one suppose that Ms. Parvaz is like O’Donnell in so many ways?  Hmmmmmm!

Burn dimwit, burn

You think Ms Parvez can understand why someone would burn down a Mosk.

After all, many Mosk attendees really do have a different view of the role of women in society. Especially those funded by Saudi whabbists.  I think when it comes to "oppressive" they are world class.

The problem with Democrats like Pavez is that they're white, pretending to be young, and totally stupid.

Oh-- and didn't the Nazis burn synagogues in the 1930's. Ah well, you know those oppressive Jews, they sure got what they deserved.

always a violent response from the left...

When will 'the people' ever catch on? I am sure someone can dig up a right wing individual or group espousing or actually committing violence, but it is endemic to the left. Compare the list of leftist speakers who have been physically attacked to the list of conservative speakers who have been attacked. QED.

The Reactionary Right is represented by the KKK, but their violence was racial and not political. In general, that pretty much sums up most violence from the right side of the aisle - racial.

The left, on the other hand, is religeous in nature. They attempt the Auto Da Fe against any unbelivers. Such a rabid response is the default hysterical response when an insecure psyche has it's foudation beliefs challenged. In other words - they're nuts, moonbats, howlers, psychopaths, etc., etc., etc. I guess that is redundant. A single label says it all: Leftist.

Maybe the "Intelligencer" should change their name...........

Let's call them the "Seattle post - (toast)ies"

In the minds of people who

In the minds of people who believe in "new age" and its relative morality, any religion that teaches absolutes becomes oppressive. Its a sad comment on American culture, that these new beliefs are taking hold. I'm not sure if people truly believe this way, or do these "beliefs" give people a way to avoid personal responsibility.

Background on Parvaz

Parvaz is a native Iranian whose family left Iran when she was a kid.  She grew up in British Columbia and considers herself Canadian, even though she now lives in the U.S.  Among her exploits for her job:  Traveling around Seattle in traditional Muslim attire less than a month after 9/11 (no doubt looking for persecution of Muslims) and a trip back to Iran last year.  She also recently cancelled her voter registration after it came out that she used the paper's office as her home address.  (h/t Sound Politics)  She claims she's afraid to have her real home address in the public record because of threats.  She also mentioned last year that she's a Canadian citizen, but didn't mention American citizenship.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

... then someone should make

... then someone should make her new "secret home address" in CANADA! Ship the creep out.

local talk show host....

questioned her, to try and straighten the record.. (the talk show host is Dori Monson, on Kiro 710, the only NON-liberal on that station)

She spent the next ten minutes digging herself a bigger hole, she obliviated in moral relativity, and kept calling this thug arsonist an "artist". And when Dori confronted Her on that she said, "He is an artist in 'his' words";

"If a murder called himself an artist would that make him an artist?"

etc, She also kept saying that there are ALWAYS two sides to everything, (No I don't think so Parvez, ARSON is always wrong no matter what.) and that instead of "burning the church in artistic expression, it would've been better if he painted a picture of a burning church", NOT understanding that the church is an important image for MILLIONS of people around the world.

There were some great callins after she left the show, and one that was saying that if someone drew a picture of a male raping a woman would that be "artistic"? If someone threated to burn an abortion clinic would she understand the viewpoint of abortion clinics being opressive to the pre-born?

NO. The only truth liberals recognize are their own lies. Liberals lie and ACCEPT evil as truth to continue believing their own lies.
