ABC Tries To Credit Democrats for Rush's $2 Million Ebay Letter!

  • Bookmark and Share

**WITH UPDATE**
If this doesn't take the cake, I don't know what does? On an ABC News Blog called the Political Radar, ABC reports on Rush Limbaugh's $2 million condemnation letter and throughout the piece continually links "Democrats" to the charity donation that Limbaugh and the ebay bidder for the letter are giving the money to. After reading this ABC blog report, one gets the sneaking suspicion that ABC thinks that Harry Reid and the Democrats are the ones that should be hailed as the good guys responsible for raising this monumental sum for charity. It is clear that ABC did their level best to play down Limbaugh's part in the story and play up the supposed positive contribution of Democrats.

The report by Z. Byron Wolf starts off trying to massage the outrage of the original faux controversy into a mere episode of political fingerpointing instead of the outright calumny it actually is. "Who says the political fingerpointing in Washington is all for naught?," the post begins lightheartedly.

And even though there is a lot of "explanation" in this report, the Political Radar report does not take any time at all to fully explain what the letter even is nor the controversy that surrounds it, a move that further softens the outrage surrounding the letter, making it all seem just an amusement.

Here is how the post begins:

Back in September, when Democrats and Republicans were sniping at each other over the Iraq war, Republicans passed a nonbinding resolution in the Senate condemning Moveon.org for calling David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, "General Betrayus" in a newspaper ad.

For their part, Democrats sent a letter calling for Rush Limbaugh to be reprimanded for calling soldiers who opposed the war "phony soldiers."

The furor seemed to have died down as the Senate moved away from voting on a string of Iraq resolutions to voting on domestic spending bills.

So, they describe the "Betray us" ad in detail even though that episode doesn't really track the Reid letter story exactly, but all they have to say of the letter situation is that "Democrats sent a letter" to Rush? Then to further soften the outrage over the whole letter incident, ABC blithely tosses it off as something that quickly faded from view because it wasn't as important as "voting on a string of Iraq resolutions to voting on domestic spending bills."

The Next paragraph again links "Democrats" to the letter...

But today comes word that a Wasghinton, D.C. area philanthropist, Betty Casey (or bettyc588, as she is known on Ebay) is going to pay over $2 million for a letter Senate Democrats wrote to Mark Mays, President of Clear Channel, asking him to condemn Rush Limbaugh for the "phony soldiers" comment.

ABC also takes great pains to show that the woman who won the letter, Betty Casey an east coast philanthropist and long time political donor, gave money to Barack Obama and other "disparate political interests" like trying to donate $50 to build a mayoral residence for the mayor of Washington D.C.

Then ABC is back to linking the letter to Democrats.

Back on October 1st, Harry Reid brought the letter to the Senate floor and asked Republicans to join him condemning Limbaugh for saying that soldiers who oppose the Iraq war are "phony soldiers.

They give Reid's side of the story and mention that Rush supposedly said "phony soldiers" several times in this piece and not one time do they fully flesh out the fact that Rush did NOT say all soldiers who oppose the war are phony. Nor do they even give Rush's side of the story using the "Limbaugh claims" rhetorical device. They simply state he said "phony soldiers" as if there was no question of the fact or any other context to inform the readers about.

And the ending of the piece is an exercise in the absurd as ABC reports with a straight face the efforts of Harry Reid to take credit for the great good the $2 million charity donation will do.

Today, Reid was more conciliatory to Limbaugh and whoever is paying for the letter. Though he said on the Senate floor that as he had watched the bidding throughout the week, he never thought it would get to $2 million.

"Now, everyone knows that Rush Limbaugh and I don't agree on everything in life and maybe that is kind of an understatement," Reid said.

"But without qualification Mark May, the owner of the network that has Rush Limbaugh, and Rush Limbaugh should know that this letter that they're auctioning is going to be something that raises money for a worthwhile cause. I don't know what we could do more important than helping to ensure that children of our fallen soldiers and police officers who have fallen in the line of duty have the opportunity for their children to have a good education," he said.

You have got to be kidding me? Harry Reid LIES on the floor of the Senate. Harry Reid FAILS to get support from his own party for the effort. The Democrats create a FAKE controversy to help deflect from their supporter’s outrageous attack on one of our most decorated soldiers. And ABC lets Harry Reid take CREDIT for this charitable donation like HE was the one responsible for it.

You can't say that the Democrats and their ABC supporters lack gall, that's for sure.

And catch this last line in the ABC report:

The bidding ends at 1:00p.m. No mater what, Democrats are going to make a ton of money for a charity off their political vitriol.

Seriously. You have to be kidding me? “Democrats are going to make a ton of money for charity?”

Democrats are responsible for this wonderful thing?

They don’t lack gall, for sure, and neither does ABC for their outrageous efforts to give the Democrats cover for their calumny.

UPDATE: New York Times' Faulty Coverage

Well, not surprisingly, the NYT's coverage of the sale of the letter is even worse than ABC's.

The Times' account starts with an outright lie:

After Rush Limbaugh referred to Iraq war veterans critical of the war as “phony soldiers,” he received a letter of complaint signed by 41 Democratic senators. He decided to auction the letter, which he described as “this glittering jewel of colossal ignorance,” for charity, and he pledged to match the price, dollar for dollar.

Of course, only the nutroots and MoevOn.org still thinks that Rush said any such thing as "Iraq war veterans critical of the war" are phonies. he did no such thing.

It takes the entire story before they even give Rush space to deny the "phony soldier" quote. But, at least the Times does that. The ABC post doesn't even bother to reveal the truth of the matter at all.

"Without qualification"??? What does THAT mean?

And in the coup de grace, he actually says that he "approves" of what "they" did.

Well, which is it Harry? You and Mark May(s) cooked this up (he actually called me about it...."we" didn't think it would make much money)...or May(s) and Limbaugh did it, but you think it was for a worthwhile cause?

This is contemptible.

I actually read the responses to the ABC 'Reid' Letter Story

Most of the responders had it right.

But none that I saw addressed the issue in 'frame' context.

It isn't so much that ABC chose to include and then ignore factual history in their story about this incredible auction, but that they framed it in the most pitiful light regarding the context.

Worse, in their news bite mentality they lent credence to the implied idea that the Democrats were actually (Reid in particular) were hoping that Rush would take the action that he took.

When in reality, the story could have been slanted to the reaction of the Democrats to a rather clever move by Limbaugh to their silly waste of taxpayer time and Senate credibility in attacking a poor commentator with their thinly veiled FCC powers.

That was the issue.  That the Senate of the United States of Amerca at War - regardless of personal principle - would take time to deal with a private enterprise broadcaster such as Rush.

Where were they during the CNN famous Chemical and Bio Warfare story in Laos?  Where were they during the mis-reported and terrible asparations against our Marines by Murtha which have all been proven false?  Where were they during the John Kerry Senate Hearings that produce a myth and long-lived lies about our brave brothers in arms killing babies?

Where were they when anything is proven to be jerked around to fit some anti-military and anti-American agenda?

Investigative Reporting is both a farce and a propaganda tool of the Left.

I went and read the ABC

I went and read the ABC story online. I couldn't find the comments, but this caught my eye, which I guess I had forgotten from the earlier report:

"I strongly believe when we can put our differences aside,
even Harry Reid and Rush Limbaugh, we should do that and try to
accomplish good things for the American people," Reid said.

Really, Harry? You and Rush both "put our differences aside" to do something good? Rush didn't put anything aside. And what did YOU put aside to "accomplish good things for the American people"?

That was the most self-centered pathetic little attempt to steal the limelight that I have seen in a long time.

Where's Harry?

There's a great pic and several related stories at:http://drudgereport.com/

Hmm, Harry seems to be missing from the photo. I thought this was all his idea.

(It appears DR pulled the photo. It was a shot of Rush surrounded by a friendly C-130 flight crew.)

Absolutely AMAZING!

And they wonder why less and less people actually watch or listen to them.

I suppose the MSM will say that the Goldmans should thank OJ for any funds that they recieve from sales of the book "If I did it"?

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Fred08.com

Of course the MSM will give the Dems credit

It would be like giving credit to someone who was drunk and ran their car into a schoolbus, killing 20 children.  Then on the way to the accident, the police saw a terrorist attack unfolding and were able to put a stop to it.  I could see the MSM:  "Why if he hadn't been drunk and killed all those kids, we never would have stopped the terrorists.  Yay, drunkie!"  Of course the cops would get no credit either.  The MSM is so blatantly bias.  It disgusts me.

Frakking mind-blowing!

The MSM really IS in some psychopathic sociopathic black hole universe all of its own ...

drill, I think only Rush's

drill, I think only Rush's listeners know that he was not supposed to be in possession of the letter. Even Newsmax doesn't make it plain that the letter was put on Ebay by Limbaugh, in retaliation against what he called Reid's overreach and abuse of power. They make it sound like the letter just magically "turned up" on ebay.

In fact, none of the coverage of this that I have seen today made it plain that Limbaugh did this in retaliation for Reid's smear of him and his abuse of power.

Classic Neo-Stalinist

Classic Neo-Stalinist actions from the MSM.  This kind of crap is right out of the leftist playbook.  They are getting tiresome.

I'm actually impressed.....

I never thought Reid (or ANY dem for that matter) had any sort of testicular fortitude at all, but this proves that Harold's got his'self balls big as church bells to try and take credit for this.

Not to mention the fact that ABC was the first to use ther terms FAKER, PHONEY HEROES, PHONEY US SOLDIER:

And if the amazing comments there are any indication of the pulse of America, this election will not be kind to Democrats.

Did ABC mention that Al Gore invented the internet?

nice post

Nice coverage of the ABC story, Warner.

I was listening to Rush today, and upon hearing Reid's statement on the Senate floor, Rush predicted that the media would run with the sentiment that the Democrats had something to do with the fundraising. He was right ... thank you ABC. It's infuriating, but all too believable.

It has been interesting to see back-to-back attacks on O'Reilly and Limbaugh. A week ago, I was prepared to think we'd see constant attacks on these guys through the '08 elections, but with Rush shoving their own words down their throats, I'm beginning to re-think my position on that.

Rush

So much for Harry's credit-grabbing attempt!  Now, let's get to that challenge Rush threw down to those 40 Dems to individually or even collectively match the proceeds of the auctioned letter to show how much they care for the families of their fellow citizens who gave their lives in defense of their country.  THAT will happen when Porky Pig is seen flying over the capitol dome.

Shameless

Reid is shameless, it's as simple as that. They write a letter to Limbaugh that is so stupid it reads like a rejected script for Sat Night Live. Limbaugh then turns it around and gets a double home run: 1. He creates a huge contribution to a very worthy cause and 2. He shows how politically bankrupt the Dems are.
Now Reid, after we have all followed the story pretty closely, has the unmitigated gall to even suggest that somehow he (Reid) has done a great thing. And he expects us to buy it. This guy is a dolt.

I know I am repeating, but

I know I am repeating, but to me the worst was making it out to be his idea with Mark May(s). ("He actually called me about it.")

Mays probably called him to let him know that not only was he not going to force Rush to apologize, but he was going to give him the letter.

OK, Harry, explain this please: If you thought this was such a "worthwhile" idea, why did you not say one damn word about it the whole time the auction was on? Why did you completely ignore it? Why weren't you talking it up, as Rush was, and encouraging people to go online and donate to the cause even if they couldn't take part in the bidding? Why did you wait until today to suggest that?

We all know the answer to that, don't we, Harry?

Off topic but ...

Just like Lt. Murphy's MOH, this wasn't covered either.

It's shameful what this administration did to General Pace....allowing him to be drummed out because the reconfirm would have been "difficult" in a dem Congress.  Bush's treatment of General Pace in this regard was probably the straw that broke my back.

Peter Pace represents the absolute best of the best.  I wish I knew where to write to him.

When I saw drill's link, it blew my mind.

But just typical of the MsM...not a peep.

General Pace is such a cut above the rest who've recently held his job.  40 years in the Corps....and he left his stars at the Wall?

terric site

Thanks for the great site!
As I was reading through it, I asked myself "Where do these amazing men and women come from?"
The answer is they come from the cities and towns and crossroads of this great country. They come in all sizes, shapes and colors, and have one thing in common--a big heart. They somehow found the backbone, the patriotic calling to serve their country, and they have done it exceedingly well and still do it as we speak. They are the teachers, lawyers, doctors, truck drivers, plumbers, writers, athletic coaches, and politicians of the future. I know that those who gain political office in the future--whether democrats or republicans--, will make the current crop of '60's era politicians who serve now look like fools.

I listened to Rush playing

I listened to Rush playing Reid's speech as he tried to take credit. A coworker I was listening to the show with called it and I was just amazed. Now, I consider myself a NB regular but to see such a subordinate like Reid try to take credit for the attempt to silence Rush totally redefined how terrible the democratic party is.

If I was a democrat and had a brain (I've known the two are mutually exclusive but bear with me), that's all I'd need to totally dismiss myself from such a hopeless endeavor such as the democratic party. As the post mentioned, I'm grappling with the amount of gall of the democratic party to self-aggrandize their party by unabashedly spinning an embarassing character flaw of the democratic party in their favor. I can't see how anybody could attribute anything positive to such a party after such a massively damaging event. I say dissolve the Democratic Party, the novelty wore off decades ago, now they are just dragging unsuspecting sheep (aka the liberal elite) down.

this fairly well tonight.   I had a couple of minor quibbles, but they got the gist of the story right.

Quite a day on this

Quite a day on this story

ABC was caught altering the story on the blog without noting the changes per some of the blog commenters

AP actually published a more correct story and so did Reuters I belive , will have to check that.

Reid didn't have a clue as to who the charity even was.

Reid then comes up with low life tactic to try to link himself to the good outcome of the issue and in his speech doesn't even mention the fact that Rush is matching the contribution to the charity.

More evidence of big brass ones on the left.

The durn nutroots are saying it was sure nice of Rush to finally appologize for his smears of the Troops and the Frost family and deciding to "pay penance"

NYT Just as outrageous

Just read the article by Stephanie Strom of the New York times regarding the auction.  It too follows the line the Rush called military personnel opposing the war "phony soldiers" and patted little Harry Reid on the head, saying he was a good boy.  Other than misstating facts and leaving other key facts out, it wasn't a bad effort.  Media Matters will be proud of Ms. Strom.  Her junior high journalism teacher might not be so favorably disposed.

Grrrrrrr.......

Reid can't fool me.  In the Senate offices, behind closed doors, Reid is seething with rage that Rush upstaged him and publicly revealed him for the fool he is.  He had to do something, and his options were limited.  So he compressed his anger and frustration, hid it deep inside himself, and made his little lying speech...hoping against hope that the MSM would do exactly what ABC did.

Somebody needs to be careful...I'd wager that Reid is planning his revenge; don't know where or when, or against whom, but just look behind you, Rush (or ???)...he's coming.

Pathetic

Reid's little speech was pathetic (as was his PURPLE shirt & tie...what was up with that?  Some kind of sap to being a "tween"?).

Milquetoast.

Someone posted an article earlier, titled "Krauthammer's Razor"....a takeoff on Occum's....and I suspect Charles' thesis may be true.  It's not malice...the simple explanation is that it's just plain stupidity (the idiot things these dems do).

Seriously, there is no THERE there.

card holding member of the vast right-wing conspiracy

Lets be realistic

The percentage of the American population that has any knowledge of this controversy is not as large as we news/political junkies tend to think, and of those that do, the percent that no the truth is not as large as we think.  A great example is my father, who while not obsessed by the news is relatively well informed, and highly intelligent.  He believed that Rush really had referred to troops who disagreed with the war as phony, because he had seen a little blurb on the MSN page about it.  That's all.

Of those that know about the letter, again the percentage that know what is really going on is lower than we believe.  I know several people that believe that this is merely CYA on Rush's part.  And more people than we realize will by into Harry Reid's ridiculous taking credit for the charity money.  Those of us that listen to Rush and other talk radio shows, and read blogs know the truth, but that is not enough.  The choir has been preached to.  We, meaning the entire conservative movement, need to realize that calling into shows with like minded audiences or participating in blogs allows us to know the truth, but it does not spread it to those that need to hear it.

Warner's UPDATE re the NYT article sez:

as one reads the Times' piece, they never bother to even mention that Rush is matching the $2.1 million sale price bringing the whole donation to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation's haul to $4.2 Million!

Thanks for pointing that out. I missed it for sure! I've altered the update to reflect that.

EL RUSHBO...

No matter how the MSM try to spin this, most people know the truth. In football terms, Reid & the Dem blitzed Rush, who picked up the blitz & went deep for a long touchdown.

Reid & his cronies are no match for El Rushbo, he is more politically astute then the Dems "leadership". Reid & Pelosi end up looking like a 1 legged man in a butt kicking contest. What's funny is that they don't even know it.

"Some of us are wise, some of us are otherwise"  Mark Levin

You Can't Make This Stuff Up

But I'll tell you this, it's genuinely discouraging to see entities like ABC MSNBC and others, do stuff like this, with reckless abandon. It's come to the point where, I believe, the networks, broadcast and cable, should be required to staff an Ombudsman to respond to egregious acts of misreporting. I'm not naive enough to believe it will fix the problem, but it seems to me, when people are permitted to flagrantly misreport the facts, there needs to be an outlet for rebuke. I've stopped buying and reading the Times, except when there's a story I hear about. However, I believe their Onbudsman has demonstrated, on more than one occasion, the willingness to take on the entrenched elite which, at the very least, causes them to step back and listen. It's time for the networks and cable outlets to do the same.

Once again Rush has gotten it right...he predicted that the msm would follow Reid's lead and claim that the Dems were in on this from the beginning. Rush is the man!

WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

What Rush did was irritate Harry Reid, raise a boatload of money for a great cause, and greatly amuse those of us who are on the "right side" of the force.

These are all admirable accomplishments, but most people, ya know, the regular people who aren't obsessed with the news and politics, DO NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT THIS.  The real world gets its info from little newsbreaks between songs on their classic rock or R&B station, or by perusing the little blurbs on the MSN or Yahoo homepage, or by turning on the Today Show and occasionally glancing at it as they are preparing for work in the morning.  Outside of our little rightwing community, most people aren't aware of this.

WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

Aetius728, I see from reading your bio that you've been a member of the blog for only about one month.  Because of the tone and substance of your thoughts, I believe you have some frustration with a lot of the daily participants of this site and their use of it as sort of a group cheerleading coffee shop gabfest.  If my perceptions are correct, I feel your pain.

I agree with your observations that most plain folks are not political in nature and are very easily mis-led with lies and distortions by the Democrats and the MSM.  The Democrats know quite well that their supporters are at least one of the following: Ignorant; Manipulative; Dependant; Lazy or Vapid.     As such, they feel confident that anything they say or do, truthfullness be damned, it will be gobbled up by their followers  like bread being thrown to a school of hungry fish.

I don't mean to disparage fellow contributors on this blog, and I must admit, it feels good sometimes to have others agree with your point of view, by responding in kind.  But, this non-sense chatter of, where you been, missed you guy/girl, what's new in your area, you go girl, and other assorted kumbaya junk terms makes me want to scream, "Get each others phone numbers and have a big conference call if your all that interested, but talk of substance and not personal BS on this site."  It seems like the same 20 or so people who constantly do this, you know who you are!

Now that I've got that personal rant out of the way, I agree with your headline "Wake Up People."  Most of the blogs are preaching to the choir and are not changing anyones mind who are members of the afore-mentioned group of uninformed or doltish Americans.  I swear there should be a litmus test, more than being able to find your a$$ with both hands, before your allowed to vote.  I don't profess to have the answer as to how to educate these folks that are quickly bringing this country down to the lowest common denominator, but I know something has to be done to the ring leaders that are encouraging them to destroy our country.  Of course, the ring-leaders are the Democrats in Congress and the leftist MSM.  It might just be time to consider storming the Bastille.

If that happens, look for pigs to fly past your window! Dingy Harry's tail is so far up between his legs is it any wonder he is now tripping over it?

Even his approval ratings in his own state have plummeted over 20 points! How much more negativism can he throw out until he gets the message?

BTW, doesn't he look like a pouting 4 year old in this picture?

"Yeah! That's the ticket!" - Tommy Flanagan

So, if Reid thinks the auction is so great, is he matching it?

Dingy Harry didn't even mention the auction all week! Wouldn't you think, if he thought it was so great, he would have talked it up, encouraging people to go and donate if they couldn't bid? But no, he recommended that when it was all over, when he made his simpering little Eddie Haskell speech.

Nice try, Harry.

Rush challenged them ALL to pitch in and match the bid. No takers, apparently. They're only good at spending other people's money.

Now I've heard

Now I've heard everything.  Next thing Gorbachev will try to take credit for ending the Cold War.  What?  He has?  Oh.

Deafening Silence

The First Amendment states that "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of
speech, or of the press ...
"

Of course, the Dems will say this letter does no such thing.

Really?

Sure, it's not an unconstitutional piece of legislation demanding Limbaugh be censured, censored or otherwise punished for his (alleged) words; this is nothing more than a "letter to the editor", right?

Well, when 41 out of 100 United States Senators - including the Senate Majority Leader, two Democrat Presidential front-runners, former Democrat Presidential candidate John F. Kerry, and Ted Kennedy - sign a "letter to the editor", that makes it a bit more significant than one written by you or I.

It becomes much more - shall I say - intimidating.

This letter is another attempt by the Democrats to get around the Constitution; the First Amendment prevents them from shutting him up directly, so they use their combined stroke to persuade the powers-that-be in the private sector to do it for them.

I point out all of this to draw attention to the deafening silence from the MSM on this end-run around the First Amendment. What would we be hearing today if Republicans had executed a similar scheme against, say, George Soros? However, the MSM instead minimizes this atrocity as "petty bickering" and tries to credit Democrats with the $4.2 million donation to charity, when they should be drawing attention to the fact that this simple letter represents a greater threat to First Amendment freedoms than the Patriot Act ever did.

(Of course, if the Democrats would stop blocking appropriations for life-preserving equipment for our soldiers, there'd be fewer dead servicemen's children in need of scholarships. But I digress.)

The precedent has been set: any time a conservative dares to speak words disagreeable to liberals, he/she may expect to have the full weight of the U.S. Senate brought to bear on their employers, seeking future restrictions on said conservative's speech that The Government could never enact on its own.

Is it getting chilly in here?
