Reuters Misleads About Bush Saying 'Mandela's Dead'

  • Bookmark and Share

This one takes the cake as today, Reuters is trying to manufacture a controversy. Apparently Reuters doesn't understand the concept of "context" because they're idiotically claiming that in his Thursday press conference Bush said that Nelson Mandela is dead. Calling what Bush said "an embarrassing gaffe," Reuters took Bush's words out of context to make it seem as if Bush was talking about something he was not talking about. But any intelligent person can easily understand Bush's context merely by listening to his whole sentence instead of shortening it to just two words.

With a headline that reads, Mandela still alive after embarrassing Bush remark, Reuters does its best to make a Bush "gaffe" where none exists.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Nelson Mandela is still very much alive despite an embarrassing gaffe by U.S. President George W. Bush, who alluded to the former South African leader's death in an attempt to explain sectarian violence in Iraq.

Heartwarming that Reuters is so concerned over Mandela's health, isn't it?

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

But here's the problem. During the press conference, Bush was not talking about the actual Nelson Mandela. He was talking about people like Nelson Mandela and speaking metaphorically. And listening to Bush's entire segment, while not artfully stated, makes it clear that he was not talking about the actual Nelson Mandela.

Here is Bush's entire segment transcribed: (My bold emphasis)

"I thought an interesting comment was made when somebody said to me, I heard somebody say, 'now where's Mandela?' Well, Mandela's dead. Because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandela's.

He was a brutal tyrant that divided people up and split families and people are recovering from this. So there's a psychological recovery that is taking place and it's hard work for them and I understand that it's hard work for them."

Could it be any more obvious that Bush is saying that there aren't any Iraqis filling the same sort of role in Iraq that Nelson Mandela filled in South Africa? Could it be any more clear that Bush was saying that Saddam "killed all the Mandelas" of Iraq?

But even with that, Reuters seems to understand that their headline is a lie because they include this paragraph in their story:

In a speech defending his administration's Iraq policy, Bush said former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's brutality had made it impossible for a unifying leader to emerge and stop the sectarian violence that has engulfed the Middle Eastern nation.

OK, then if you KNOW what Bush meant, what he was actually talking about... then why this trumped up story?

Ah, it's solely because you want to make Bush look bad, eh Reuters?

Now we get it.

Update 09-22 18:18 | Matthew Sheffield. It's a fundamental rule of argument that if you're going to say someone else is an idiot, you need to make sure all your facts are straight.

Zell Miller, please call your office. Another media type needs help understanding what a metaphor is.

Similarly firing intellectual blanks was self-righteous left-wing comedian Jon Stewart for whom 80% of all political jokes involve the punchline "Because Republicans are idiots." The irony is thick enough to cut with a knife.

Devastating DNC campaign slogans:

IT'S THE METAPHORS, STUPID!

HELPFUL METAPHORS ARE ON THE WAY!

WHERE'S THE BEEFY METAPHORS?!?

i think i could do this all day:)

lol

Please do.

Very misleading headline or

Very misleading headline or Reuters had absolutely no idea of the analogy he was referring to.

I am amazed.

NO! I am not amazed anymore.

The gaffe is all

The gaffe is all al-Reuters'

But I doubt they're one bit embarrassed...(that would require a sense of right and wrong)

I'm Surprised They Didn't Misinterpret This One Too...

"Bush Says School Is Pointless..."

... is how Reuters probably would have interpreted this quote from the President's news conference the other day:

"I remind people that, like, when I'm with Condi, I say she's the Ph.D. and I'm the C student and just look at who's the president and who's the advisor."

MSM

I thought these people understood nuance?

I guess we can say Bush was talking over their heads.

All those books they're supposedly reading and still dumb as a rock.

Al Reuters

Yeah, they know what they are doing. They have been doing it for a long time. Where does it stop. Some call it BDS, I think it is simply anti-Americanism.

Mandela is a Communist

Reuters instead of Oprahizing Mandela should look what this communist ilk have done to Africa. They have destroyed Rhodesia Zimbabwe, ripped to shreds Angola and are in process genocidal warfare against Boers in Africa.

Mandela is a scourge to all free peoples for the smiling face of Castro butchery he helped implant on all Africans.

WOW, it looks like Reuters

WOW, it looks like Reuters even gets their news from people like Jon Stewart now.

Whoa whoa whoa Lame

Whoa whoa whoa Lame Cherry.

I missed the sarcasm note because there's no way this post is serious.

What are you talking about?

Mandela fights apartheid, instrumental in dismantling a racsit/oppressive regime, and you call him a scourge to all free peoples?

Wow.

i think it would be great

i think it would be great if, at some point, bush actually acknowleged the MSM's intentional misrepresentations in a sarcastic manner ... maybe, he could have his speech transcribed in crayon or baby blocks and have it projected behind him ...

"...speaking

"...speaking metaphorically"

And we all know what a master of the metaphor George Bush is.

... so you're saying YOU are

... so you're saying YOU are too stupid to get it, too, blaster? Just like alReuters, I guess, Just not too smart.

Hey buddy boy...how about

Hey buddy boy...how about laying off the red meat for awhile...

Bush tried to talk like a big boy and once again planted his hoof in his mouth.  If you're such a hifalutin' writer, try replying politely and in complete sentences with proper punctuation.  I highly recommend "The Elements of Style" by Strunk and White.

blaster, people who play Grammar Nazi on the internet

only prove that they have small, weak, minds...but I repeat myself....

(h/t Samuel Clemens)

And you weren't one of the

And you weren't one of the drooling throng that attacked me earlier in the week when I made a grammatical error?

No.

But I see what your repeated, small minded stints as Grammar Nazi must be about....retribution....in itself a small minded exercise.

Olberman did it on his old blog, too, until I told him it made him look small minded...I guess even a man with his obviously limited and narrow perspective was able to see that....how about you?

"But I see what your

"But I see what your repeated, small minded stints as Grammar Nazi must be about"

I'm here to help.  By the way, you forgot to hypenate small-minded.

Small minded is as small minded does, blaster...

....but I repeat myself....

Funny I always thought it would be impossible to find an individual even more small minded than Olberman, but maybe I was wrong.

By the way, you forgot to

By the way, you forgot to hypenate small-minded.

Glad you know what a hyphen is. But it kind of looks like dictionaries don't agree with your assumptions that the hyphen is sacrosanct: Hyphens dropping from English

(By the way, sacrosanct means untouchable and special or not to be altered. Just wanted to save you the time of looking up such a large word. I'm here to help.)

You're the regular little

You're the regular little Oscar Wilde aren't you.  Thanks for getting me current on the use of the hypen.  If it's all the same to you I'll stick the "classical methods" taught to me by the greats, rather than the lowly public school clatter that is in practice here.

To the Wilde comment, I like

To the Wilde comment, I like girls too much. To the hyphens, I'll admit to having the same inclination! LOL

I love a good grammar

I love a good grammar prescriptivist vs. descriptionist argument!

pharisee that ever ransacked a Bible to rake the promises to himself
and fling the curses on his neighbors."

blaster, it's not surprising, but you just don't get it

the internet and places like this is about ideas, not addiction to form.  Constant correction takes away from the free flow of ideas....and often provides a hiding place for those who can only muster low grade arguments.

Like they say, "consistency

Like they say, "a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."

Best post of the day so far.

A Freudian slip ('parapraxis' to the pedant)?

Killing them with kindness isn't working.  Time to get scrappy with the Donkeys.

... is it anything like YOU

... is it anything like YOU trying to write like a big boy, blasted?

Thats the funniest thing I

Thats the funniest thing I have seen all day.  A reporter thinks he can rip President Bush and then becomes a laughing stock because he isn't smart enough to follow a simple metaphor.  The fact that it was on Reuters only makes this journalistic gaffe even funnier.

With malice aforethoght

Except they knew what he meant. It was just a hit job. Period.

Ignorance is bliss. It's easier to repeat a mindless slogan than to do some actual research.

London newspaper piles on

London's Daily Mail is piling on with their own story.  They provide the whole quote, but the message is clear:  Bush screwed up again.

The MSM's motto seems to be, "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story."

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

these are acts of desperation...very sad

"Bush is not perfect in every single possible way!" This is all the left has to go on now...

how the once-mighty left has fallen:(

Founding Fathers absent in Iraq

I daresay that if someone was to do a LexisNexis search they would find at least one story about how Iraq can't form a democracy because they don't have (Thomas) Jefferson or any other "founding father" to lead them in the effort. Isn't this the same thing the W said, except he a contemporary figure (Mandela) instead?

Blogger's headline

Betcha this was some blogger's headline and the so-called al-Rueters reporter just did his job of reporting what the blogger said...isn't that how all these stories crop up!!  And there will never be a retraction!!

I think you are right. I

I think you are right. I would also bet Olbermann predictably repeats this journalistic gaffe while making a fool of himself tonight.

Illiterate Literalists

The leftists in the MSM who found wiggle room in the statment "I did not have sex with that woman," suddenly can't (or won't) understand phrasing that would be clear to a seventh-grader?

If Bush had used air quotes when he mentioned "Mandela" and maybe thrown in the obvious parenthetical, saying "(Iraq's) 'Mandela'" then he likely would have been tagged for being racially insensitive.

Reminds me of an MSM joke I heard some time back.

Bush and the Pope are out on the Potomac in the presidential yacht. A big gust of wind comes along and blows the Pope's hat into the river. As six Secret Service agents move into action to retrieve the hat, Bush says "wait, I'll get it." Bush steps over the edge of the yacht, walks across the water for twenty feet, grabs the hat, and returns to the yacht.

And in typical find-some-bad-in-everything MSM fashion, the next day the headlines read:

"Bush Can't Swim"

Thompson/Giuliani 2008

"Bush tried to talk like a

"Bush tried to talk like a big boy and once again planted his hoof in his mouth."

No he didn't. But, as ususal, when the script doesn't go the way they want, dems re-write it.

This piece should end once and for all any debate as to whether the media is biased.

"The ultimate Democrat constituent would be a public schoolteacher on welfare who needed an abortion and was suing her doctor."

Ann Coulter

Joseph Goebbels would be

Joseph Goebbels would be proud of the AP.

Interesting. I had heard

Interesting. I had heard nothing about this until yesterday when a liberal in my office mentioned what Bush said, and proceeded to then, based on that "gaffe," mumble how much of an idiot Bush is.

And to that point I'd not heard anything other than that and thought to myself, "what the heck is Bush thinking?" Well, I guess the lib got his "facts" from Air America during his lunch break, as usual, then brings back the enlightening uh....."information".... to me.

I'll drop this revelation on him Monday and let him know that he can direct his "idiot" statement toward those who were obviously too shallow to understand the context.

Liberalism is a true mental disorder.
