Walter Williams Column: Should Black People Tolerate This?
Each year, roughly 7,000 blacks are murdered. Ninety-four percent of the time, the murderer is another black person. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, between 1976 and 2011, there were 279,384 black murder victims. Using the 94 percent figure means that 262,621 were murdered by other blacks. Though blacks are 13 percent of the nation's population, they account for more than 50 percent of homicide victims. Nationally, black homicide victimization rate is six times that of whites, and in some cities, it's 22 times that of whites. Coupled with being most of the nation's homicide victims, blacks are most of the victims of violent personal crimes, such as assault and robbery.
The magnitude of this tragic mayhem can be viewed in another light. According to a Tuskegee Institute study, between the years 1882 and 1968, 3,446 blacks were lynched at the hands of whites. Black fatalities during the Korean War (3,075), Vietnam War (7,243) and all wars since 1980 (8,197) come to 18,515, a number that pales in comparison with black loss of life at home. It's a tragic commentary to be able to say that young black males have a greater chance of reaching maturity on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan than on the streets of Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit, Oakland, Newark and other cities.
A much larger issue is how might we interpret the deafening silence about the day-to-day murder in black communities compared with the national uproar over the killing of Trayvon Martin. Such a response by politicians, civil rights organizations and the mainstream news media could easily be interpreted as "blacks killing other blacks is of little concern, but it's unacceptable for a white to kill a black person."
There are a few civil rights leaders with a different vision. When President Barack Obama commented about the Trayvon Martin case, T. Willard Fair, president of the Urban League of Greater Miami, told The Daily Caller that "the outrage should be about us killing each other, about black-on-black crime." He asked rhetorically, "Wouldn't you think to have 41 people shot (in Chicago) between Friday morning and Monday morning would be much more newsworthy and deserve much more outrage?" Former NAACP leader Pastor C.L. Bryant said the rallies organized by Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson suggest there is an epidemic of "white men killing black young men," adding: "The epidemic is truly black-on-black crime. The greatest danger to the lives of young black men are young black men."
Not only is there silence about black-on-black crime; there's silence and concealment about black racist attacks on whites — for example, the recent attacks on two Virginian-Pilot newspaper reporters set upon and beaten by a mob of young blacks. The story wasn't even covered by their own newspaper. In March, a black mob assaulted, knocked unconscious, disrobed and robbed a white tourist in downtown Baltimore. Black mobs have roamed the streets of Denver, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Cleveland, Washington, Los Angeles and other cities, making unprovoked attacks on whites and running off with their belongings.
Racist attacks have been against not only whites but also Asians. Such attacks include the San Francisco beating death of an 83-year-old Chinese man, the pushing of a 57-year-old woman off a train platform and the knocking of a 59-year-old Chinese man to the ground, which killed him. For years, Asian school students in New York and Philadelphia have been beaten up by their black classmates and called racist epithets — for example, "Hey, Chinese!" and "Yo, dragon ball!" But that kind of bullying, unlike the bullying of homosexuals, goes unreported and unpunished.
Racial demagoguery from the president on down is not in our nation's best interests, plus it's dangerous. As my colleague Thomas Sowell recently put it, "if there is anything worse than a one-sided race war, it is a two-sided race war, especially when one of the races outnumbers the other several times over."

➚ What I want to know ...

I want to know why Walter Williams' column hits NB 2-3 days after I've picked it up on Drudge?
But as always, Mr. Williams hits hard and accurately at the subjects he addresses.
I know there are liberals here at NB who believe black on black crime is something that shouldn't be broached publicly, but tended to almost exclusively within the black community (whatever that means), but it's evident that's nothing more than hiding condescension.
I remember how horrified America was when the Tuskeegee Experiment was exposed. Today's liberal plan is far more insidious in that liberals have convinced an entire race they don't know any better.
Maybe it's time America expects excellence from its children. All of them.
Well Cool...

for liberals Black on Black crimes fall under the guise of "acceptable losses". I believe its the only time they are all for "don't ask, don't tell".

In one of yesterday's threads, Melissa Harris-Perry let this little nugget of condescension slip:
"It’s something -- you know, that’s part of why, for example, we have an underreporting of rape and domestic violence in African-American communities, because we know that the violence enacted on black men by police. So we often don’t call, right?"
This should be a story in itself, but Harris-Perry uses it to explain why she doesn't want to be judgmental of misogynistic Muslims.
I guess it isn't "rape" rape.

It occurs to me Liberal Americans are far more outraged when a black man mistreats dogs than when he kills another black.

I have to agree with you though it sounds awful to think blacks are treated like tools by liberals. I have posted links many times over the months about local news stories regarding black on black crime. Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Houston, and other large cities in the south have all shown an increase in population of Katrina and Rita refugees. As a result, the crime rates in these cities have now put them along the same numbers as Chicago, Detroit, Phillie.
The local black Churches and politicians, with little support and news coverage, are setting up town halls, group meetings, to talk about the problems in the black community in those cities. A worthy cause but little or no national support because they are talking about issues not liked by liberals. They are talking about violence among teens, the school drop out rates, single parent homes, no fathers in these kids lives, increased dependency on government more than ever before. The most important statistic is that drugs and drug addiction is involved in over 80% of all crimes in Baton Rouge. The average age of the victim is 19- 24, the average age of the perpetrator is 19-24. 95% of all blacks death due to violence is perpetrated by other blacks.
The sad thing about Baton Rouge is that they never had this number of violent deaths before. A city of about 275,000 and they rank amongst the most violent cities in the country with 10 times the population. At least there are some in the black community trying to take some leadership role and enlighten the people about the real causes of their problems. They are not blaming whites, they are not blaming the police; they are focusing on the issues within the black community.
People like Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, and Starr Parker have been trying to speak out for years but notice how seldom they are on MSM.
I wish the black leadership in La and Tx best wishes, courage, and honesty because that is the only way they will make significant changes. Continuing to buy into the democratic plantation rhetoric is the way to continue the downhill slide. To quote SoL....I am sick of liberals.
The real crime?
Submitted by Newsbubba on Fri, 05/25/2012 - 7:45pm.
Liberals don't even consider blacks killing other blacks a crime. That's because their regard for blacks is so low that they're less important than the baby whales or seals!
Even Obama has no use for them beyond their vote.
It's really sad.

There is a sense of superiority among white liberals that black people are less capable of controlling themselves than those they consider more evolved.
It is absolutely not true, but we've met these losers here (*cough* Vandamage).

The media chastized black preachers for going against Obama's stand on gay marriage but they ignore those same black preachers concerned about violence in the black community.
The media knows they have a lot of influence over issues in this country, that is sad on many levels.

While Mr. Williams, and others like him call for an awakening, we have a President who narcissistically proclaims:
Today, we're announcing the 2012 launch of African Americans for Obama. (White race for Romney, anybody?)
While a voice from the grave cries out:
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin...
How long ago did President Obama quote the same speech? "Don’t tell me that words don’t matter. ‘I have a dream.’ Just words."
Yes, Mr. President. you have demonstrated that, to you, they are indeed, "just words". Worse yet, those who watched Dr. King die, and mourned his passing, march lockstep to the staccato cadence of President Obama . . . because he's black.
A change is gonna' come.
Thank you Walter

And totally incomprehensible that it goes uncommented on. And yet, NBPP want to excoriate white America.

Thank you for the excellent column Mr. Williams (and to NB for posting it). The statistics about the number of Blacks killed in War versus the number murdered here at home is shocking. It's also frightening and disheartening -- that so many feel so disillusioned and disenfranchised, that such cynical disregard for life and well being of others has been created, whatever the cause.
Definitely putting this on my Twitter account to share. Thanks again.
