Upgrade Update

Author pictures, as you can obviously see, are back again. I had to rewrite the code from scratch and am testing them in the blog posts only.

If I feel confident in the code, user avatars will come back in the comments but a two restrictions: 1) pics can be no bigger than 3kb in size, 2) they must be exactly 85 pixels high if you don't want them to appear stretched out.

Private messaging is working again also.

Okay you are PC savvy, how is someone suppose to tell what the heck the size and height it is before inserting?

I already had one in, but not sure of size...sure hope it qualifies.

I put my pics on the "desktop" - then when there can "right" click, on the pic, and choose "properties" it will tell you the size of the file.

If you are selecting from the Internet, right click and look below to Properties. Left click and the pop-up will display width and height. Those numbers can be played with (increased/reduced) by using a common percentage and round off if necessary ie 160x175 simply use 85x85 and the results will work.

width=80 height=56 -- use width=70 height=70

I just opened a big picture in MS Paint, press Ctrl-E and it'll display the height and width and even the file size. I used Paint to crop and shrink an image down. It works pretty well for the simple things.

Once Rush Limbaugh & I manage-by-example to get BT using a Mac, she'll no-doubt be computing circles around everyone here in a matter of weeks. :) And these days, if she wants to have it, Windows is just an additional expense/feature, and the first month trial period (which should be long enough to show it's most-times simply not-needed) is free.

I haven't forgotten your advice about a MAC, I also have heard Rush too and others who recommend them.

Long story how I got my PC but I finally got one, and I didn't have a choice of a MAC in my area, even if I would of understood the difference, which I wouldn't of...lol.

One thing at a time for me.... 

Just learning how to navigate, understand the lingo ect. is never ending for me...but I love it!

Since I'm willing to buy my own notebooks, and because in certain cases there's strength in diversity, I'm (barely) tolerated on our network, which they do by giving me my own IP address, which has worked fine so far. IT guys don't like 'em because Apple users tend not to need many IT guys, which means it kinda threatens to fall over on a lot of jobs, but that's JMHO. ;)

Mr. Sheffield is it possible for you to just keep photos for the staff who post and run the site as a kind of badge of honor, because when bloggers start loading their pictures it takes allot on slow net service and it distracts when people start putting spangles and things in picture posts from the thoughts in the debate.

Just one assessment as I believe you people deserve the credit in all the work you do. I really appreciate the new program you have generating. It is wonderfully fast now.

I agree that the pics in comments tend to distract, my avatar appears in my user account now which i think is sufficient.

Also since the upgrade the users online number has risen to unprecendented heights, is this due to the no auto log-out so people appear here even if the've long gone?

I like the pictures a lot myself...it doesn't distract me in the least of what the subject is...I love the variety of each individual, adds jazz and all that stuff to the site IMHO....

As to your last point, yes, indeed - for instance, it was very impressive that Matthew accomplished this site overhaul without losing old comments.  Even if I had the capability of doing something like this (ha!), I'd have said, sorry, everyone's comments are gone.

I like the old style comments. I hate change. Except I like the pics idea. How about a toggle switch for users to change the look and feel of the comments section? Thanks and keep up the good work.

Just checked to pic I previously uploaded and it meets the new criteria (smaller than 3kb and exactly 85 pixels high). As long as the picture doesn't have to be pretty, I'm good to go!

I would like to be able to toggle the avatars in the comments section. It is nice... but can get distracting, especially in heavily indented threads. If a user could choose in their account whether they want to see avatars in the threads... nice but probably would be a bit of code.

Matt, I've tried to get rid of the picture I had and replace it with one that fits the size constraints.  I've deleted the original from my own desk-top hard drive, I've deleted it from my account here and closed the search window, re-opened and tried to put in the new one and still I see the old one (me next to the NRA shooting range logo).

Is the system still in flux and I can expect miracles within mere...days?

I like what you've done, Matt.  It always takes awhile to work out the bugs.  I'm trying to test for a bug now with my image icon.  The 3K limit is a challenge.
