AP Panic Is Evident Over Obama's 'Private Sector Is Just Fine' Comment, Non-Walkback
Today at a press conference, President Barack Obama said that "we’ve created 4.3 million jobs over the last 27 months, over 800,000 just this year alone. The private sector is doing fine. Where we’re seeing weaknesses in our economy have to do with state and local government ..."
Later, in a cleanup attempt, in what the press is claiming is a walkback, Obama really didn't walk it back: "Listen, it is absolutely clear that the economy is not doing fine. That's the reason I had the press conference. ... what I've been saying consistently over the last year, we've actually seen some good momentum in the private sector. We've seen 4.3 million jobs created -- 800,000 this year alone -- record corporate profits. And so that has not been the biggest drag on the economy." He never pulled back from saying that "the private sector is doing fine." The abject panic at the Associated Press is evident in tonight's report by Ken Thomas and Philip Elliott (HT to a NewsBusters tipster; bolds and numbered tags are mine):
Story Continues Below Ad ↓Obama gets grief for saying private sector 'fine'
President Barack Obama made Mitt Romney's day by declaring "the private sector is doing fine" and opening himself to the accusation that he - not the rich Republican [1] - is the one who is out of touch with reality. Obama quickly clarified his remark Friday but Republicans already had their teeth in it [2] and weren't letting go.
"Is he really that out of touch?" GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney asked as Obama's initial comments ricocheted through the presidential campaign.
Seeking to head off any damage, Obama backpedaled and declared it is "absolutely clear that the economy is not doing fine." [3] While there had been some "good momentum" in the private sector, Obama said, public sector growth lagged behind, making it imperative that Congress act on his proposals to hire more teachers and first-responders.
Obama's original six-word sentence, even if taken out of context, amounted to an unforced political error. The economy is the single biggest issue on voters' minds and a weak spot for him, given the nation's stubbornly high 8.2 percent unemployment rate.
Nearly every day, Obama finds himself having to defend his stewardship of an economy that has struggled to recover from the 2008 economic downturn and pleading with voters to stick with him because, he says, Romney would pursue policies that led to the recession.
But on Friday, Obama may have given his rival an opening. [4]
... Obama's comments at a White House news conference were reminiscent of Republican nominee John McCain's assertion in mid-September 2008 that the "fundamentals of our economy are strong," [5] just as the U.S. economy was melting down. Candidate Obama seized on those comments then. Now, as president, he was getting grief along similar lines.
... But while "doing fine" is in the eye of the beholder, Obama was correct that the job picture in the private sector is brighter than in the public sector. Since the recession officially ended in June 2009, private companies have added 3.1 million jobs. [6]
Notes (in how Thomas and Elliott might have discussed these matters among themselves):
[1] -- "Geez, we have to get something in here really quick about the fact that Romney is rich, even though it's totally irrelevant to our report."
[2] -- "We need a wild, out-of-control animal reference to make Republicans look like the unreasonable meanies."
[3] -- "We know this really isn't a backpedal, because he didn't admit that the private sector isn't fine, but we're going to pretend it is anyway. Those dummy subscribing publishers and broadcasters who use our content won't know any better."
[4] -- "Even though we know it's something Mitt Romney and Republicans will be driving a Mack Truck through for the next five months, let's just call it an 'opening.'"
[5] -- "We know that McCain was only talking about the economy's capabilities as opposed to where it actually stood, but we pounced on it when we had the chance. So let's use it now, even though Obama's out of touch flub is obviously different, as it clearly refers to his take on the private sector's current actual health."
[6] -- "Let's be sure not to tell anyone that 737,000 of those jobs are with temporary help services, that the number of part-time employees is at an all-time high of 28 million, that full-time employment is down by 1.6 million since Obama took office (and only up by 1.5 million since the recession ended almost three years ago), or that non-postal federal employment is up by over 140,000 since January 2009. And whatever we do, we can't say that states like Wisconsin which have addressed public sector employment costs have largely avoided public employee layoffs, while states like Ohio which tried but failed to rein in costs due to union activism are seeing public-sector layoffs all over the state."
Obama had a chance to simply say he was wrong, and didn't. It's too late now; for reasons far beyond what is detailed here, this seems destined to haunt him all the way until Election Day. The way Thomas and Elliott pathetically and desperately tried to construct their defenses at the Administration's Press clearly demonstrate that.

Six words...."even if taken out of context"
"we’ve created 4.3 million jobs over the last 27 months, over 800,000 just this year alone".
I believe this is the "context" the President was offering. Of course maybe they are on to something....these are pretty lousy numbers considering.

I'm sure Obama and his greedy wife really DO think the economy is 'just fine'. After all, they're hobnobbing with Hollywood's glitterati on a daily basis. They throw lavish orgies disguised as state dinners every week. They jet around to the world's most lavish resorts, hotels and tourist attractions.
And they steal OUR tax dollars to foot the bill.
I'm sure while they're swilling champagne and stuffing their faces with caviar bon-bons, they look around at all their ill-gotten finery and think everything's dandy.
They don't give a d@#^ about the 3 million people they've put out of business, out of work and out of hope with their failed policies.

The President didn't say anything that was untrue because it was HE that said it, therefore, OF COURSE he was 100% accurate...
This is the level of self delusion this man operates under. He truly believes himself, "Exceptionally gifted" and simply not on the same level with everyone else. All of us are simply to listen, believe and heed whatever he says.
So, when one contemplates the level of arrogance it must take for him to say things like, "The private sector is doing fine", and compares it with the reality we all live and breathe in, I believe only one of two conclusions can be made: The man is delusional beyond measure and he believes his own contradictions and lies or; the man is a souless schemer without a moral rudder.

Why is the economy still idling in neutral? Well, it's unseasonably warm weather. No, wait, it's the Eurozone crisis. No, actually it's the Japanese tsunami. Oh wait, scratch all that, it's Bush's fault. Why didn't $1T in stimulus reap that <6% unemployment we promised? We didn't spend enough.
Obama exhibits all the traits of someone who has had a professional path paved for him his entire life by friends, connections, and mentors. Whom he summarily discards whenever it becomes politically expedient. Consequently, he folds like an accordion during any true test of leadership and character. He is incapable of a Clinton-esque political triangulation because he is utterly convinced of his own superiority.

or the first time he referred to something as 'his' in an inappropriate way, I'd probably pass over it. I think Obama automatically states things from a perspective of utter self-absorption, like when he referred to our troops as fighting for him. I'm tired of it after listening to it for four years. A normal person would have said "my staff" or "my administration", because those do indeed belong to the President.

That just reminded me of an article in American Thinker a couple of weeks ago,
Obama's Sons: They Are Real for Him.
....he is a megalomaniac, in the literal, clinical sense.
He is not a liar, or not simply a liar. He envisions himself as more than a man. Not a god, exactly, but a kind of ethereal, roving force -- a collective (or collectivist) energy enveloping the world.
The historical "majestic plural," colloquially known as "the royal we," is the manner whereby those perceived as ruling by divine dispensation refer to themselves. When such a man -- a king, for example, says "we," he represents himself as the symbol of his entire kingdom, all things together in one person. Obama turns this around. When he says "I," he seems to be trying to portray the world -- or at least the world of desirable possibilities -- as a mere symbol of himself.
So it's quite possible that he does think of it as "HIS" house, if "we the people" are merely a symbol of him.
Read the whole thing.

EXCELLENT article. I thought the same thing at the time, that his 'sons' comment was meant in a grandiose metaphorical sense, but that piece fleshed it out in a really chilling way.
Once again Obama made that little twist from the way normal people would phrase it, saying 'my' sons and daughters instead of 'our' (as in "America's") sons and daughters. We have the perspective as Americans that we're part of something bigger than ourselves, but Obama takes bigger things and makes them part of himself.
If that doesn't make your skin crawl, it's on too tight. Blech.

George Harrison and the Beatles cut a tune on the 'White Album' (ironic name, huh??) titled 'I, Me, Mine' (and I guess they could have added 'my' also), which fits Boy Baraka to a tee, even to this day. George also wrote a very precient song titled 'Taxman', which is up-to-date still. And, of course, John Lennon penned 'Nowhere Man'.........................and the late Billy Preston, who actually recorded with the Beatles, is well known for his tune called 'Nothin' From Nothin' Leaves Nothin'...............which was even written in Obamaspeak!!!!!

Just for argument's sake, just for a moment let's assume Ear Leader told the truth about the number of new jobs created in this country. Now, HOW MANY JOBS WERE DESTROYED by Ogabe and his Marxist Minions? In other words, what is the net number of new jobs in the country since Black Jesus was immaculated? Why has Bureau of Labor Statistics had to revise upward the number of new appications for unemployment nearly every week? Why is it always "unexpected" that there are 300K+ new applications for unemployment?
And, what kind of jobs has SCOAMF created? If they are good, permanent, well paying jobs, why has the median income dropped since he took office?

Let me just add something about those poor state governors and mayors woes. I would have to post about 57 links so I will just give thoughts on Obie's actions and folks can look up in each of their own states.
Many programs that are "mandated" by the feds are actually administered by the states. Those program costs are partially reimbursed to the states varying percentages based on the programs. For instance, Obama has been cutting states reimbursement costs for medicaid and other medical programs such as alchohol and drug treatment facilities. They have also cut the payments of medical treatments under the medicaid programs so that first line medical providers are absorbing the loss. Hospitals, clinics, and private physicians are losing money rapidly. Due to "emergency" declaration after Katrina and Rita, La had medicaid expenses far above normal. The government recently decided to cut our share of those "emergency" funds and La now has a huge deficit in medicaid costs that would have been "eligible" for "normal" reimbursement percentages. California is also having similar problems due to the generosity of their local policies of providing free medical care to illegals that they tried to put under "medicaid" and now has lowered reimbursement percentages putting California is serious deficits for their "Cal-Aid" programs.
Not just medical programs, but also education, highways construction and repair, foster care, changing states share of oil and gas revenue, Dept of Agriculture, police and other law enforcement agency reimbursements, grants and contracts have all been cut as well. It is easier to look at state to state obviously great differences because of locations, environment, resources, population, etc all come into play. One note of interest, in all of these changes coming through agency regulations and executive orders, the hardest hit states are run by Republican Governors. Hmmmm
