Hysterical CNN, AP Headlines: 'Walker Survives'

As of 11:15 p.m., with about 74% of the votes counted, Wisconsin Governor Scott was ahead of Scott Barrett by roughly a 56-44 margin. Late-arriving votes from Democrat-heavy areas of Milwaukee and Dane Counties seemed likely to narrow the margin to perhaps 10 points. (UPDATE: Because heavier margins of support for Barrett in those two counties, the final margin was 6.9%, roughly the same as Barack Obama's 7.4% margin in 2008, which was never labeled a "survival" or "narrow" or anything similar.)

The headlines currently at CNN (HT to a NewsBusters tipster) and the Associated Press both act as if Walker squeaked by. Pics follow the jump.

As usual, and as noted earlier today, Bauer persists with the "eliminated union rights for most public workers" falsehood.

Readers can rest assured that had Barrett won by even a single vote, the press would have considered it something like a "crushing mandate."

In another example of media accuracy, CNN's home-page headline for tonight's NBA playoff game reads: "Live: Pivotal Game 3 for Celtics, Heat." For those who don't follow sports much, it's really Game 5.

If a black cherry/vodka was around.....I would definitely try it. If its good enough for Mom its good enough for me.

I'm a firm believer of celebrating the good when it comes because who knows what tomorrow brings. But, I'm also a positive thinker. The pendulum has swung so far to the left its eventually got to come back to the right. May not be in my lifetime but hopefully for the grandkids.

Tip one of your drinks for me and lets get working to make November even better!!! ;~)

Just looked at the Three Olives Cherry website. Nice recipes to try. Also, there are a couple dozen flavored vodkas. There's a Supercola flavor so you can dispense with the cola and just use their booze for cola flavor. Add the Three Olives Cherry vodka and you have a cherry cola made entirely with their vodkas. Killa would go ballistic. ;-)

Wow, I missed all this action

Wow, I missed all this action somehow!! I've tried Cherry Three Olives - it's pretty good, actually, and not overpriced. What I do is mix some designer black cherry 'new-age' drink with my vodka - I can get Kettle One at Costco for a good price, and some NB gal (maybe Ms. Rad or Blonde) told me about the Costco brand of vodka. Otherwise, I try and buy some upper-shelf brand that isn't too hoity-toity or overpriced, like Gray Goose is.

As I have admitted to before - my preference is considered to be a 'chick drink' by the REAL drinkers - but I'm not much of a hard-liquor or beer or wine kind of guy, so I have to find something that goes down easy and makes me mellow without wrecking my next day!!!

I'd like to mix one up for MsYardley - she might get a little looped!!! I got my Mom a little bit animated one night, and that was fun.

Yeah, I'm seeing these 'survives' headlines over here in Asia/Hawaii. I was really busy at work today, and didn't get home until late in the afternoon/evening - and there wasn't any radio going on at the jobsite, so I basically didn't think too much about this until I came home. But I'm really glad that it turned out this way, and I'd have to say that not only did Walker 'survive' this manufactured BS, but he WHOMPED the whole pile of crap!!! And apparantly he's got some success along the way, as far as proving that he can do what he did. Of course, the libs, the unions, and the StateRun Media are apoplectic - but............it couldn't happen to a 'nicer' bunch of idiots!!!!

Not only did Mr. Bauer use the "eliminated union rights" lie, he also dropped this bomb in his AP story:

"Democrats and organized labor spent millions to oust Walker, but found themselves hopelessly outspent by Republicans from across the country who donated record-setting sums to Walker."

So, you see, it wasn't the legitimate will of the voters; the Democrats were "outspent". There is no mention, of course, that the "Democrats and organized labor" also received money from "across the country".

Oh yeah, in what part of the Bill of Rights does one find "union rights"?

They are confused about how the 'exit polls' were so far off in showing a near tie in the recall vote, then turn around and rejoice how these same exit polls show a 9 point margin in supporting Obammy. Uh, if the only people who cared to interviewed at exit polls were pro-recall doesn't that indicate that the anti-recall thus pro-Romney folks chose not to be interviewed at exit?

I am not a Rhodes Scholar and apparently that makes me a little smarter than some who are.

It was hilarious watching Cavuto's election coverage, when he exposed CNN and how they were doing a tight, close up shot on a small crowd that had gathered outside the Wisconsin capital building in Madison. CNN was making the crowd appear to be huge, but Cavuto had FOX Business's cameras pan back and expose the lie/joke that the crowd was actually quite small!

"Survived the recall" is judgement free, and it's highly accurate, for that's exactly what he did. "Beat the odds" would be far more judgmental.

You can't say that he "won" the recall, for he wasn't recalled. A recall is used to get someone out, not put someone in.

Rush may have used the word "barely," but the AP didn't. He's the one insinuating that the AP used that term to indicate "squeaked by," but, if that were the case, wouldn't have they used the more appropriate term "barely survived?"

What's wrong with the headline, other than it was used by a liberal news source? Objectively, it's nether inaccurate nor biased. In this case, you're insinuating a bias that doesn't exist, all because it didn't say what you felt it should say. The bias, in this instance, is on your part.

I know what Rush was saying, but Rush is wrong. You're basing the entire augment on what Rush's interpretation of the headline is, not on what the headline says. The headline is objective. Its Rush who's making it subjective, by inserting things which aren't included in headline. That's bias on his part, plain and simple.

It is this type of bias, this intentional insertion of words and statements that were never included in the original statement, or, in this case, headline, in order to change the meaning, the intent, in a biased manner, that this site is dedicated to ferreting out and exposing. To be honest with you, I'm surprised that you fell for Rush's ploy.

IMHO, the only way to see bias in this headline is to find examples of how the media handled similar Democrat wins. Since this is a unique election in that the incumbent won a recall there will be no direct correlations but similar percentage spreads should be easy to find.

That may be difficult to do, as a lot of news services rely upon on or two wire services in which to produce the majority of their articles, especially on national stories. That means that a lot of the news sources will be similar in their headlines and their content. To me, that's one of the biggest disadvantages in using those wire services, a lack of originality.

Reuters and AP - the life spring of the lazy and bias media. Where would we be without them. Between the emergence of the wire service and the conglomeration of media 'empires' they took away much of the opposing opinions in the print media. The TV media has always been subject to limited opinions due to lack of national and varied opinion.

trial is a helpful comparison. The vote for conviction was well short, but his avoiding removal from office is frequently described as "survival", "survived", or some related form of "survive".

While I can see the comparison I would like to point out that Clinton was actually guilty of the charges for which he was being impeached and therefor to 'Survive' is actually more apropos than in the Walker case who seems to have had a steady and reliable lead through the entire process.

I don't really see bias in the headline because it is an acceptable use of the word but I believe in my heart that if the party identification was on the other foot that the mood and wording of the headlines would be completely different.

You are mixing separate standards. Clinton's guilt or innocence of the specific charges is no more relevant than whether or not the grounds for Walker's recall may have been valid. The controlling issue is whether or not the voters (the Wisconsin electorate and the US Senate)--in whose hands the decisions rested--considered their behavior sufficient to warrant removal from office. In both cases they did not. And thus both individuals survived the attempted ousters by healthy margins.

If we are speaking of the specific cases away from media coverage I would agree with your summation of the events. However, they are relevant when you examine the collective point of view of media coverage and, something a good reporter would always do, critically determine who benefits.

The overblown media event that was the accusations against Clinton were handled poorly. However the fact that he 'survived' the impeachment was because he was at risk due to the entire nation knowing that he was guilty of the actual charges even though not all understood what the charges were due to an excellent defense strategy by Clinton, his handlers and the media - he survived.

The overblown media event that was the Wisconsin Recall was also handled poorly. However the fact that he 'survived' is a different context because despite the attempts of the media, unions and Democrats to paint this as a close race - it never really was that close.

In fact, it was similar in scale to the Obama/McCain election percentages in which the media clearly stated that the historic election was a mandate for the ideas of Obama and clearly demonstrated the mood of America. So while the word 'survived' is completely appropriate there definitely exist a bias in the coverage to which the selection of the word 'survives' only acts in abetting existing bias - looking at the use of 'survive' outside the context of existing bias there would be no bias in its use.

I don't really see a bias in "survives." Of course one can -- and apparently Rush did -- interpret a meaning if so inclined. But the use of the word itself is pretty straightforward as far as I'm concerned.

For instance, if a headline read, "Man Survives Crash On Interstate" is there an implication of barely making it?

There's nothing in that statement to say that the driver was near death, or climbed out and walked away without a scratch. It's a simple declarative statement of fact: The person didn't die.

Death threats are a sad reflection on the psychological and political pathologies which spawn them--regardless of the recipients. I supported Walker's policies and believe the recall effort was ill-advised and the partisan rancor associated with it inexcusable.

But if you wish to inject an angle to the implications of "survival" other than the one under discussion, then It would only be fair to note the death threats that Democratic politicians have "survived" as well.

Enilghten me on how Southern Democrats, or Americans in general, were for abortion, gay rights, Jewish bankers, illegal alien rights, etc before the Klan existed.

us conservatives were going calculatedly and deliberately insinuate things about you cuz you are a lefty; or did it take you all of being one week shy of a total of five years on board to decide you were being picked on?

The attempt, in your last paragraph, to be facetious, actually shows why you are consistently at odds with conservative regulars on these threads ---

We know conservatives are not perfect; but conservatives are far more likely to call out their own for misprision, than are lefties and  liberal/progressives when it comes to treating with their side.

 NewsBusters may go primarily after liberal media bias, but I have seen conservative posters on these threads decry GOP actions / inactions many times.

Can't say the same when it comes to lefty libs going after other leftists or Democrats - in any venue.

You always point out how often you state, on these threads, your feelings regarding Lib--Dim miscues; but one drop of water does not a rainstorm make.

Who's making false assumptions?  You, Jer.  Again, you conflate and confuse history.  The KKK kept the same values of the traditional Democrat while the rest of the Left went further Left.  Your mistake is to compare today's Left with yesteryear's Left.  They are not the same except in the fact that both are not Constitutionalists.  It's like comparing the so-called Liberal of today with the Liberal of the 50's and 60's.  How in the hell do you justify calling yourselves the same name when the Left of the 50's and 60's wanted government out of their lives and today's Left want to force more government upon the people?  The Left are screwed up and dangerous to America.  The Left's way is not America's way.  Utopia is impossible.  Democrats, Liberals, Progressives, the Left - whatever the flavor of the day is - are enslaving people again, incrementally, not freeing the people or even maintaining current liberties.

My point was to draw attention to the hate and calls for violence in Wisc. by unions both homegrown and imported. If this is how the democrats want to win elections and recalls, then every state may be in trouble. Politicians are already thinking twice about running for re-election, even democrats, because of the threats if they dont vote for the liberal agenda. The thugs in Wisc damaged the capital, cost the taxpayers millions for damages and police protection, as well as additional money to the state for this recall election

The unions want to control working people, businesses, and government decisions about government employees. Waaay too much power to unions when almost every state and the Feds that have rules to protect workers. The unions are fighting for other people's money for their power since they are becoming obsolete. "Survive" is more than just a republican governor's fight, it is a fight for the evil useless violent union brown shirts that have no respect for the election process, the voice of the people.

So I'll repeat what I posted earlier. I backed Walker against the unions. Death threats are inexcusable. The recall election was ill-advised.

However, although the death threats in Wisconsin made by union thugs and their allies were and are contemptible, it's not as if Democrats are the only ones who have ever authored such threats, nor are Republicans and conservatives always targets and never instigators.  It's a two-way street traveled by low-lifes from all ideological directions.

And I'm a little confused why you enlarged the "survival" issue and addressed it to me.  Others had weighed in on the use of the term earlier.  I agreed with their interpretation and merely added the impeachment comparison.

Again, I was talking about the force of the unions involved in this story. The "little Hatch Act" adopted by every state, does not allow for government employees to become involved in politics. It is probably the easiest of violations to fire someone. State and federal employees are highly protected, have wage rules where ALL employees at certain GS levels all make the same amount. And trust me, it is very difficult to fire a government employee even if they committ grievous violations.

The most powerful organizations are the unions and here they have decided to control the political environment in Wisc. They released names of voters, they spent millions of members money for an agenda the members were against. They used intimidation and threats against public servants at great costs to taxpayers. Again, disregarding the voice of the citizens, their safety, their money, their voice.

There are nuts all over the country, that we agree on. But this is an organized bunch throughout the country and have openly called for intimidation and violence to achieve their goals with no interest of the citizens in mind. The unions have become self serving rather than serve their members. They have become similar to the Mafia in the manner they operate.

Whether you agree on "right to work" or not,we can all agree, violence in the election process is a threat to our country, threats against public servants of any kind is horrific, regardless of the numbers involved, you know that the threats of violence does not come from the majority of ordinary Americans. It comes from the well organized radical groups from the left regardless of the target. Unions should never have that kind of power nor should we have a DOJ that turns the other cheek since they represent "their" people.

People like Trumpka has been to the White House a lot more than Cardinal Dolan. Alan West has been a target of the media, the black caucus, and never been invited to the white house. He is a favority of the TEA Party which has never engaged in riots, threats, month long sit ins, or damaged property. But it is always a constant that conservatives are as dangerous as the left, threaten violence as much as the left, death threats as much as the left, and are the most danger to America.

The story about Wisconsin is extremely important because it brings out the worst of the left progresive agenda, the means justifies the ends, and the hypocrisy of the media and even rational democrats. This election is very telling as to what will happen in every state as we near Nov 2012. THAT is what I fear will be the "end of our republic", not a republican president as the media states.

You and I agree on some things but the most important is that this isnt about d's and r's. Its about the radicals in this country who want to destroy the process where d's and r's ASK the voters for their voice and their support.

Tom, a biased headline would read "barely survives " or "easily survives" because both "barely" and "easily" are subjective. It all depends upon one's definition of each term. It takes a certain amount of bias to define them.

"Survives," on the other hand, is objective because there's no opinion based values that are needed to define it. You ether survive or you don't. So, the headline "Walker survives" isn't biased because it isn't subjective.

I don't think you will get gruff because it is true. In addition, it was record setting, from my understanding. From what I have read, of the 3 governors recalled, only Scott Walker has ever survived it. So, as far as semantics go, it is an accurate statement to make, that he survived the recall. It'd be like people denying that Clinton was ever impeached because he was not convicted -- semantics -- he was impeached.

In our local newspaper (Sun Journal), the most inept and liberal partisan paper in Maine, the editors played the AP "Walker Survived" story on page A7 his morning. Seriously.

Their big front page stories included the earth shattering news that the local Kiwanis Club had canceled its pancake breakfast this year, and the opening of a new gambling casino. And oh, yes, the Venus transit.

This is the same newspaper that placed the news that McCain had chosen Sarah Palin as his VP candidate on page B10 or so in 2008.

No bias there, no sirree.

The use of this word implies that the situation was perilous, when in fact, Walker was ahead in the polls the whole time, both before and after a challenger was nominated. That is how it's use shows bias on the part of the media.

Cal Thomas, a conservative pundit and strong supporter of Governor Walker, penned that recent column when all indications pointed to a clear Walker victory. And yet he too employed the term "survives" in the context of the upcoming recall vote.

Cal's usage reaffirms its propriety. But I wonder if Mr. Blumer thinks Thomas is biased or just weak in writing and language skills.

By the way, you really have to love some of the headlines and some of the leads in the stories about the Walker victory. How about this from the Washington Post: "Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker Survives Recall Election." Survives? I saw that all night last night. "Survives"? That implies barely. That implies by a gnat's eyelash. Survives? This was a thumping! It was a bigger margin than it was two years ago.

"Scott Walker Survives Recall Election. Long lines and close vote. Race tests both parties, November strategies." Not one thing in that headline or lede in the Washington Post is accurate, not one thing.

Well...ONLY that both were politicians facing efforts to remove them from elected office and both easily withstood votes taken in accordance with those efforts. But other than that, no, there was no parallel at all.

Sheesh. One gathers the only "parallel" you would acknowledge is another gubernatorial recall election in which the sitting governor prevailed by the identical margin.

I have a relative in my extended family who is a Yellow Dog Dem and will always support Dems. He is a personal injury attorney and has made a ton of money in his profession. He is a smart guy and knows that if conservatives ever got in control, they might enact "Loser Pays" laws that would basically put him out of business, or severely curtail his earnings potential.

Not saying that Jer is in the same situation.  I'm just saying that I know nice people who have a vested interest in being a Yellow Dog Dem.

I was merely pointing out how it's understandable that certain people support Dems. I read most of your posts, but certainly not all of them. I didn't know where you stand on tort reform.  I still don't really know where you stand on tort reform, and even if you spelled it out, I may forget in the future where you stand on tort reform.

Even if I had known your position on tort reform, it would not have meant a thing regarding my post, as I went out of my way to say that it had nothing to do with you, personally.

If your not sure, than why consider my point insulting in the least?  I always advise my family members, who from time-to-time engage in the Facebook Drama arguments that occur so frequently there, (I have a FB account but only use it four or five times a year), to give the other person the benefit of the doubt when it comes to perceived grievance or insult.  I'm surprised I'm asking you to do the same.

No insult exists in any of my two posts above.  If you're not sure, just ask for a clarification.

My family member is "like you" in that he argues incessantly from a liberal viewpoint.  Not a far left loony bias, mind you.  More of a "NY Times" liberal slant on things.  He has a vested interest in arguing from that perspective, because of his profession, so it's understandable why he holds his viewpoints.  Scuba Dude, in reference to Democrats, asked, "Why Jer keeps defending and identifying with them is beyond me, he seems like a nice intelligent guy."   So I offered a plausible reason and related it to a relative of mine.  And followed it up by pointing out that I wasn't saying that you were in the same situation as my relative, (because I have no way of knowing that one way or the other).

So where is the insult?  I'm was merely offering a valid explanation of why a totally rational individual keeps defending what many of us here consider the indefensible.  (And the "totally rational" remark is in reference to my relative.  I don't want to make any assumptions about you that you might perceive as an insult.)
