AP Coverage of Walker, Barrett Wis. Recall Campaign Visits Lacks Sense of Direction and (of Course) Fairness

As one who has made the occasional dumb mistake (which readers tend to be quite adept at catching), I figured I'd give the Associated Press's Todd Richmond and his editors a while to correct a pretty obvious miscue relating to a Wisconsin gubernatorial recall campaign visit by challenger Tom Barrett. In a report whose first version appeared yesterday morning and currently has a 2:42 p.m. Saturday time stamp, Richmond wrote that Barrett's campaign Saturday started "with the Barron County Dairy Breakfast in Hillsdale, a burg of 1,250 people about 90 miles west of Minneapolis." Well Todd, if Barrett actually was 90 miles west of the Twin Cities, he would not have been in Wisconsin; he would have been about halfway between Minneapolis and the North Dakota border. (Hillsdale, Wisconsin is really about 90 miles east of Minneapolis.)

On more substantive matters, Richmond, with the help of an agenda-driven headline ("Wis. governor works to meet voters before recall"), portrayed Walker as an awkward in-person campaigner, someone not instantly recognized by many people who have lives outside of poltics (imagine that) and, of course (while not mentioning union and leftist spending at all) as a beneficiary of "a jaw-dropping $31 million in campaign cash." He also wrote that polls show the race as close while failing to note that Walker leads in either every one or nearly every one. The relevant paragraphs from Richmond's report are after the jump (bolds are mine):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Republican Gov. Scott Walker and Democratic challenger Tom Barrett began a final push Saturday to connect with voters in person before next week's historic recall election, appearing at farm breakfasts and restaurants and rallying campaign workers.

... Polls show a tight race with only a handful of voters still undecided before Tuesday's election, and Walker and Barrett have been struggling to win them over for the past month. Barrett released a new television ad Saturday, again calling on the governor to explain his role in an ongoing investigation of associates during Walker's tenure as Milwaukee County executive, but the candidates mostly used the day to meet voters.

Barrett, who serves as Milwaukee's mayor, spent the day on the other side of the state, starting with the Barron County Dairy Breakfast in Hillsdale, a burg of 1,250 people about 90 miles west of Minneapolis. The rest of his schedule included stops at a cafe in St. Croix Falls, a pizza joint in Superior and the state Democratic Party's office in Chippewa Falls.

... Walker began his day before 7 a.m., serving food at a dairy breakfast on a massive farm just outside Evansville, a city of 5,000 people about 25 miles south of Madison, the state capital. His agenda called for a stop at another dairy breakfast in Monroe County before visiting campaign field offices in Hudson, Wausau, Green Bay and Wauwatosa.

"I feel good," Walker said. "We're not taking anything for granted. We're working all the way up to 8 p.m. on Tuesday."

Dressed in blue jeans, hiking boots and a button-down shirt and flanked by 18-year-old Evansville Future Farmers of America Queen Emily Templeton and 18-year-old La Prairie 4-H Club Queen Erica Ballmer, the governor handed out yogurt and applesauce to scores of people at the annual Rock County Dairy Breakfast.

A smiling Walker tried to engage people in short, friendly conversations, commenting, for example, on the beautiful morning. Most didn't seem to recognize him. They simply said "thank you" as he placed yogurt cups on their plates and moved on. A handful of people shook his hand, though, and congratulated him on his accomplishments.

One of them was Ken Pierson, 44, who runs a tool-and-die shop in Janesville with his father. He made a point of introducing his two sons to the governor. Later, he said he thinks Walker's changes will help the state in the long run and the recall isn't justified.

Neither Richmond nor Brian Bakst, who also contributed to the report, told us whether everyone instantly recognized Barrett at his campaign stops as he "tried" to engage people.

As to the "jaw-dropping" campaign contributions, Walker, in an April 22 Newsmax interview, estimated that, in the words of reporters David A. Patten and Kathleen Walter, "big labor will invest as much as $60 million in its bid to defeat him." The item's headline reads that it's the "Democratic Machine" which is spending that much. If it weren't the case, AP, USA Today, and others reporting on the Wisconsin race would have called Walker out on his claim long ago. But they haven't. Ergo, it safe to say at the very least that Walker and those behind him are more than likely not outspending the governor's opponents. Yet the press, by ignoring spending by labor and leftist special interest groups, is conveying the impression that they are.

This of course sets up a Tuesday night write-up, if Walker wins, that "big money" drowned out "the little guy." What utter horse manure.

According to the democrats

Submitted by ohio granny on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 10:31am.

According to the democrats no republican can ever be allowed to have a level playing field. For years unions, both public and private, have spent enormous sums of money helping democrats. They not only have spent huge sums of money, they have spend enormous numbers of man hours. It is about time the republicans have been able to compete with both the man hours, thanks to the tea parties, and money thanks to the Citizens United ruling from the Supreme Court.

To say that the Supreme Court ruling and the tea parties make democrats furious is an understatement. States passing voter identification is another thing they hate. Democrats have always counted on unions being able to spend unlimited amounts of money, while the republicans were limited by campaign finance rules. They have been able to steal close elections by dead people voting, illegal votes and certain trusted people voting as many times as needed, (i.e. found ballots in trunks).

With voter identification making the stealing of elections harder and the financial field being leveled, no wonder the democrats are trying everything in their power to demonize their opponents. They cannot run on their records or how they want to govern. Their arsenal for winning elections has been seriously hampered.

No wonder the democrats are acting like cornered rats. That is what they have become.

Yes, Granny found ballots in trunks, We in CT know all too well.

Submitted by NavyBuckeye on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 10:41am.

That happened during our Governor race and elections. Magically the Democrat AG forget to send enough ballots to cities that were known to be weighted on the Conservative side and when the word came that Malloy was losing New Haven and Hartford magically she allowed the polls to stay open in those cities longer because of ballot issues. And you guessed it when they showed the ballot counting on TV, the counters were were SEIU tshirts.....amazingly Malloy won a very close race after 3 recounts.....and Malloy won New Haven finally on the third one...after ballots were "found". Same in Harford.....hmmmmmmmmmm

And now we have over 90 new taxes and the state workers still go their new benefits and raises even though Malloy said he wouldn't allow it...pffffftttt as my son would say.

Just the beginning too.

Submitted by NavyBuckeye on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 10:36am.

This is just the start. First they will attack Wisconsin. It doesn't matter who the People vote into office, the liberal machine and Unions will keep attacking. They will use the Union thugs to count votes, intimidate voters and attack those who don't vote (see other story on front page). Then if their candidate lose, they will sue and ask for recounts until they manage to "find" enough votes to win. See Florida as to how they are planning to set this up for Obama. Florida wants to purge illegal voters, dead people and non citizens from the voter records but the DOJ has issued a warning...why? Because they and Obama know they will need to count on this non legal voters to cast votes to win the election. It is simply amazing at what these drones are getting away with at the moment.

I think someone needs to do a followup piece. Poor Barrett and crew apparently completely lost their collective sense of direction and missed that great breakfast. At least Walker knows how to stay IN Wisconsin. ;)

As for the rest of it, I wish they would stop editorializing what is supposed to be a news piece. So sick of that junk. They don't even try to sneak it in anymore -- it's so ridiculously blatant.

Attack ads

Submitted by CobraMan on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 12:01pm.

I saw several attack ads in WCCO yesterday, from both sides in the Wisconsin recall.

In the pro Walker ads, they showed news clips describing Milwaukee as having the 4th highest unemployment rate in the country. There was eve one from FOX9, a Fox affiliate in Milwaukee, complaining about how the horrible unemployment rate is in Milwaukee, but here's the thing: all of those clips were from 2010! That was two years ago! Everyone's employment rates were terrible two years ago. What does that have to do with 2012? (Instead of using them to attack Barrett, they should have used them to show how much better the entire state is under Walker.)

Soon after those ran, a Barrett ad would run (and they always followed the Walker ads), one that claimed that Walker is, get this: "trying to start a Civil War. (That's news to me! I didn't know Walker was going to have the State of Wisconsin leave the Republic.) and that Walker was putting his "national desires" ahead of Wisconsin (by starting a civil war, perhaps?). Barrett then claimed that Walker was traveling the country collecting millions of dollar which he is using to "distort my record." You mean like how you're distorting Walkers record by claiming that he's trying to start a civil war?

I feel a bit sorry for the citizens of Wisconsin. Both Walker and Barrett are using the same tactic, attack and distort. It looks to me that it's a loose/loose situation for Wisconsin.

I can't believe Walker's side is taking that approach. Dumb. They actually have some positive things to say about some decent results he is bringing...they need to go that way, for sure. This foot-shooting stuff is getting old and frustrating.

Conservatives/Repubs need to wise up and listen to some legit focus groups (that guy on "Hannity" -- what's his name?-- actually does a decent job getting down to what people respond positively to with ads and what turns them off). Isn't a lot of this just common sense? But if they're not sure what's effective, at least consult a good PR person...or psychologist!

There's anothe one that's annoying

Submitted by CobraMan on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 12:56pm.

There's another anti-Walker ads that's been running, one that tries to link Walker to some illegal activity by someone else (I can't remember the name) because, supposedly, Walker received an e-mail about some "criminal activity." No real insight as to what the e-mail actually said, or when it was sent, or even if it was read by Walker, but plenty of demands for Walker to turn over ALL of his e-mails. As the announcer said: "What does Walker know, and when? If Walker can't trust us with his e-mails, can we trust him with our vote?"

What do I care about Walker's private e-mails? HE didn't send that e-mail that they're referring to, someone else did! It could have been sent by the very group who made the ad, all so that they can force Walk to turn over his private e-mails. Besides, when will the group who made that ad turn over all THEIR e-mails to Walker? How did they get that e-mail, and when?

In accordance with federal law, the group who produced that ad has the disclaimer at the bottom explaining who they are, who actually funded the ad, but here's the thing: even on my 28 inch, wide screen, HD TV, the font was so small I couldn't read it! I thought those were supposed to be prominently displaced? It's not prominent if you can only read it with a magnifying glass! That;s the first example of "fine print" I've ever seen on TV.

Importance of WI recall

Submitted by chatmandu002 on Mon, 06/04/2012 - 12:38pm.

We all believe that the recall in Wisconsin this week will be a harbinger of what will happen in November. We can only hope the good citizens of Wisconsin will re-elect Gov Walker.
