Cleveland Plain Dealer: One of Five Arrested in Bridge Blowup Plot Signed 'Occupy' Group's Warehouse Lease

The last national press reports on the five men arrested Monday for plotting to blow up a Cleveland-area bridge reassured everyone that none involved were in responsible roles in the Occupy movement. On Thursday, the Associated Press's Thomas J. Sheeran wrote that Occupy Cleveland spokespersons "said the men were associated with the group but didn't represent Occupy Cleveland or its non-violent philosophy." An earlier AP report paraphrased a claim that they "had been associated with the anticorporate Occupy Cleveland movement but don't share its nonviolent views." Reuters carried this quote: "They were in no way representing or acting on behalf of Occupy Cleveland."

Well, last night, the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Michael Sangiacomo reported that at least one of the five was once in a sufficiently responsible position within the Occupy group to represent it while signing a lease for space the group used. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, the wire services just noted and others will do with what follows:

Suspect in bridge bombing plot signed lease on Occupy Cleveland warehouse

One of the five self-described anarchists arrested last week for attempting to blow up a local bridge signed the lease for a West Side warehouse where about a dozen members of the Occupy Cleveland group live.

In a one-hour recording of a Friday evening general assembly meeting of the group posted on its website http://occupycleveland.com/live-stream/, occupy leaders expressed concern about Anthony Hayne's name being on the lease, which strengthens his link to the group.

"We have a person facing terrorism charges on the lease of our warehouse," said one of the leaders. "If this gets into the media, it would be a disaster."

... An FBI affidavit said Hayne helped plan the bombing attempt. It also said he was one of a group that last Sunday picked up a duffel bag containing smoke grenades and gas masks, as well as two black boxes that the suspects thought contained bombs.

Joseph Zitt, spokesman for Occupy Cleveland, told The Plain Dealer Saturday that when they learned Hayne was arrested in the terrorism plot, the organization started working to get his name off the lease at the 3619 Walton Avenue property."

The landlord said it would be fine to change the name. We're working that out now," Zitt said. Zitt said Hayne happened to be on hand when the organization leased the warehouse to store items and serve as housing for some members.

"We needed a name on the lease, and he agreed to be it," Zitt said. "I want to stress that rent [$600 a month] for the warehouse was paid directly to the landlord. No money was ever given to Hayne."

It's not clear whether Hayne was the lease's sole signer, but if there had been others, I believe the PD's Sangiacomo would have let readers know. In general, the PD has done a very good job of not pulling its punches in its coverage of the bridge-bombing story. That's not something you can say about other city papers' coverage of violence associated with their Occupy groups, particularly in San Francisco and Oakland.

As to the Cleveland Occupy group's worries about a "disaster," that would seem to depend on whether the establishment press outside of Cleveland cares enough to do follow-up reports. I'll bet they won't. But if this story were about someone active in the Tea Party who had gone rogue, it would already have been widely headlined nationwide.

Note to Occumorons.

Submitted by Newsbubba on Sun, 05/06/2012 - 10:43am.

The tried and true way that communist revolutions are started is to organize a pack of fools, infitrate it with "anarchists" who know how to lead the morons around by the nose, and cause so much chaos that the existing governmental structures are torn down and replaced with the "people."

Then they boot your sorry asses to the curb, and give you just enough to keep you tame, and we move into the wonderful era of a "workers' paradise."

Oh, and it really helps if over half the morons in the country have elected a "professional community organizer" as president.  That really moves things along much more quickly.

One more note, Occumorons.  Guess who the "workers" will be once your paradise is achieved? you can bet your sweet asses you won't be camped out in lower Manhattan having sex and free food anymore, you dumb bastards.

"Accurate, but false"

Submitted by Galvanic on Sun, 05/06/2012 - 11:17am.

A couple of weeks ago, Romney -- in response to Dem charges of a "War on Women" -- cited Bureal of Labor Statistics data that indicated since Obama was sworn into office (January 2009), over 92% of the jobs lost belonged to women.

The DNC was knocked on its keester and desperately reached for an twisted explanation, which ultimately came down to acknowledging that while the government statistics were true, they didn't tell the real story (aka The Truth).

I expect that they will pull a similar tact here. Somehow they will find a way to put some distance between the terrorist and Occupy Cleveland, and berate any MSMers who don't play along.

Not only were these terrorists associated with the Occupy movement, but at least one of them was a leader of that group.

Let the cover-up begin. The silence on this item from the national MSM will be deafening.

Imagine if this had happened but instead of the Occupy movement they were associated with a local Tea Party group?

Here's a good question...

Submitted by CobraMan on Sun, 05/06/2012 - 12:21pm.

Here's a good question: why do the Occupiers need a warehouse? I though they were a loosely aligned band of concerned people, gathered together in protest? I can't think of any need they would have for a warehouse. What are they storing, their "hand made" signs or something?

Oh, I get it, some of them are "living there," which is totally illegal. No wonder they're worried about "living here when the FBI shows up."

You guy are renting a warehouse and using it as residential property! Did you get tired of your "impromptu" camps so quickly?

You signed a capitalist lackey document of subservience, all for a bit of urban space?

What chickens*t wussy suburban liberal iPhone SUV-and-Blue Tooth full-grown radical children you OWS guys are!

You call yourselves Occupy Any Ol' Thing for a reason. Just occupy the building, why doncha? Or do you pay landlords you like in Cleveland while your fellow tent-dwellers ruin coffee shops in lower Manhattan ... just because you can? And because destroying things is kewl.

The OWS and the Sin of Presumption

Submitted by berlet98 on Sun, 05/06/2012 - 5:28pm.

The OWS and the Sin of Presumption

At one time or another, most of us assume and presume too much but few of us ever envision the United States of America collapsing as a great nation. Historically, such a presumption was not uncommon.

The thought of ancient Rome being overrun by barbarians had to have been unfathomable to the average Roman in the street, until it happened.

The idea that Russians would be ruled by Lenin and his Bolsheviks after Czar Nicholas II must have seemed beyond the pale of believability, until it happened.

Most Germans were unaware that Adolph Hitler would initiate one of the most brutal genocides in human history and precipitate a world war leading to Germany’s near-extinction, until it happened.

And, thanks in large part to the complicity of the mainstream media which prefer to liberally slant news and ignore what is the most dire threat to America’s existence since Hitler and the USSR, the presumption that we will survive the insidious Occupy Wall Street movement aimed at undermining the capitalist foundations of our prosperity and success, could very well come to fruition in the not too distant future.

The mortal sin of presumption is a Roman Catholic doctrine which essentially holds that to arrogantly believe and trust in one’s own merits to the exclusion of any divine intercession can lead to salvation is the road to perdition.

Whether or not Americans accept that religious teaching, vainly presuming the United States will exist indefinitely, that we as a country are immune to forces which can effect our dissolution, that we are impervious to external and internal threats, is not only presumptuous but reflects a dangerous ignorance of the history of all great nations and empires.

Those nations and empires have had an average life-span of two centuries. As of 2012, the U.S.A. will be 223 years old.

The reality of presumption, that Americans and America will continue to regard the OWS, the Occupiers of Wall Street and everything else they choose to occupy, destroy, and desecrate as just another protest group, is beyond foolhardy. In fact, they are busily plotting the overthrow of government and institutions which have served us, never perfectly, but satisfactorily, for centuries.

An extreme scenario? Please read on. . .
