Climate Skeptics Are Like Racists; Oregon Prof's Looniness Not News Until UK Daily Mail Reports It

By Tom Blumer | April 03, 2012 | 22:19

Tom Blumer's picture

For the umpteenth time, news unfavorable or embarrassing to the left comes from the UK instead of the USA.

In this instance, it was an unbylined item in Saturday's Daily Mail. For years, Oregon University Sociology and environmental studies professor Kari Norgaard has been spewing forth bigoted characterizations of anyone who dares not surrender to the gospel of global warming. But her bizarre outlook didn't get meaningful notice from the press all these years until she presented her, uh, work at the annual four-day ‘Planet Under Pressure’ international conference in London. Here is some of what the Daily Mail found, and which Rush Limbaugh for all practical purposes broke in the U.S. media. I hear echoes of the former Soviet Union's serial abuse of psychiatry just around the bend (bolds are mine throughout this post):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓
'If you don't believe in climate change you must be sick': Oregon professor likens skepticism to racism
An Oregon University professor has controversially compared skepticism of global warming to racism.
Sociology and environmental studies professor Kari Norgaard wrote a paper criticising non-believers, suggesting that doubters need to be have a ‘sickness’.
The professor, who holds a B.S. in biology and a master's and PhD in sociology, argued that ‘cultural resistance’ to accepting humans as being responsible for climate change ‘must be recognised and treated’ as an aberrant sociological behaviour.
Resolving skepticism about climate change alarmists, she added, is a challenge equitable to overcoming ‘racism or slavery in the U.S. South’.
In the last 30 years, Norgaard said, climate change has been seen as either a hoax or fixable with minimal political or economic intervention.
‘This kind of cultural resistance to very significant social threat is something that we would expect in any society facing a massive threat’, she said.

Rush noted yesterday that Ms. Norgaard is not a harmless goofball:

Now, before you start laughing at this, understand that this woman is teaching impressionable young skulls full of mush this stuff, and they're coming out of Oregon University believing this. And if they're not challenged anywhere the rest of their life they're going to believe this everywhere they go, and some of these students end up at the Environmental Protection Agency or end up in a Democrat administration either at the statehouse level or at the presidential level, this is the kind of person that Obama would hire. This the kind of person Obama has hired. This is the kind of thinking that Obama believes and sponsors. It's what he believes. It's what he was taught.
This is what has passed for science education for over ten years now, and it is not science. It's pure politics. It's pure politics disguised as science. This professor, if you read whole story, this Kari Norgaard, sociology and environmental studies professor, wants everybody packed into the cities so that we're not strolling around nature and ruining it. She wants it something seen only in pictures, with accredited photographers allowed to go there and take pictures of nature, but the mass population should not be allowed.

This will shock absolutely no one, but a Google News Search on Ms. Norgaard's first and last name (not in quotes; sorted by date with duplicates) returns seven items, none of which are establishment press news sources.

In another move which will shock absolutely no one, Watt's Up With That reports, with supporting graphics, that Ms. Norgaard's university is feverishly working to scrub information about her and her work from the web:

Rewriting history: “treatment” of climate sceptics disappears from University of Oregon press statement
Apparently, the maelstrom of embarrassment and public ridicule created by Kari Marie Norgaard, professor of sociology and environmental studies at the University of Oregon was too much for the University to bear. So, in the best Soviet style, they rewrote history, as if nobody would notice, without so much as an apology or update. I find it amazing in this day an age that University types still don’t understand the Internet and that disappearing things like this only makes it worse for you.
... It seems Norgaard herself has been “disappeared” from the University of Oregon web server.
... apparently her official uoregon.edu email address has been replaced on the Sociology Faculty page.

Of course, none of this possibly be news to those in the U.S. establishment press either. (/sarc)

How does the socioscatologist propose to treat the "aberration"?

Submitted by drsamherman on Tue, 04/03/2012 - 10:25pm.

Re-education camps? Perhaps high-dose traditional antipsychotics and aversion therapy ala "Clockwork Orange"?

Sociologists are NOT licensed to diagnose or treat anything or anyone unless they hold the proper training in clinical psychology, counseling or therapy. Even then, the modes of treatment they can employ are quite limited, and with good reason after reading her drivel.

The "Daily Mail" is a tabloid but...

I agree that some good scoops on US politics have appeared in the MailOnline.com. They are also known for the latest scandalous gossip on the British royal family.

I was an one time a graduate student in Ecology at a US university. I am familiar with the tactics that professors use to silence people with opposing points of view. I heard the term "INTUITIVELY OBVIOUS" bandied about. That would imply that anyone who thinks differently is irrational.

Before then, I had no idea that science was determined by INTUITION!

A spoof?

Submitted by Arlen Cooper on Wed, 04/04/2012 - 7:35am.

I almost took this article seriously until I read ex buff e-dub's comment. This must be Jim Carey in drag promoting some forth-coming movie. Where I come from we accept "ugly" people on their own merits. But when the "uglies" are obviously mentally awry ... we don;t give them tenure, ... when put them in with the "bulls & boars." Their offspring have a sweet taste and the stools produced by those who digest the meat thereof, look like Michelle's "big-hind-end." Kari Norgaard, is an anomaly, ... how can one so far out in "left-field" be taken serious enough to be editorialized in mainstream media? You can thank the liberal "dumbing-down" media.

...being "This is what passes for science these days".

Rush said: "This is what has passed for science education for over ten years now..."

Thanks for listening, Rush. ;)

On a more serious note, if history CONTINUES to repeat itself, this is a prelude to group think, totalitarianistic, almost if not totally fascist government control. There's a belief out there that with all the communication available to us, the world has shrunk to a global village, so naturally, we will be needing a global government for that village. Of course, for this to happen, implies that everyone will have to think the same way.

Scared yet? I am, and it's not "global warming" that frightens me. There's a far bigger threat looming in the horizon.

Sadly

1. It is the University of Oregon not known for a third tier education. The reality is that it is just slightly better that a community college. No insult to community colleges everywhere.

2. It has a far left reputation and agenda that is well documented over the last couple of decades.

3. Most liberal arts school earns the title "Liberal" by providing indoctrination not education.

4. Unfortunately this is common practice in academia today; knowledge is only rate as a positive if that knowledge is firmly based on the liberal agenda.

As a business man and an employer I have found over the last ten years or so that it is better and wiser to hire a high school kid then most college grads. They are often harder working and are not so obstinate in understanding the real world or with dealing with the public. They do not try and convince the customers that they are stupid for not believing the indoctrination that they received in college.

Hold on a second...

Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Wed, 04/04/2012 - 12:47pm.

"Oregon University Sociology and environmental studies professor Kari Norgaard..."

"The professor, who holds a B.S. in biology and a master's and PhD in sociology..."

And these degrees qualify her as an environmental studies professor how? What does she know about climatology, geology, astrophysics, etc., which are all closely tied into atmospheric and climate studies. This UNBELIEVABLY ugly (the Jim Carey remarks were spot on!), ignorant whack-job has no business preaching, let alone teaching, environmental studies. She (it) therefore has absolutely no business making a presentation at an international climate conference. None. Hell, she (it) has no business teaching at an institute of (supposedly) higher learning in the first place.

Also, granting her potential-possible-implied knowledge of sociology, what is her basis for accusing "climate deniers" of mental illness? Does she cite examples of non-science based diatribes? Speakers (screamers) with no scientific credentials lecturing on the subject? "Deniers" who are making millions and billions from their position on the climate? "Denier" scientists making their living on government grants? Opponents of climate change (or whatever they're calling it this week) caught red-handed manufacturing or manipulating data to "prove" their point? Of course not. It's the proponents, not the opponents, of climate change doing all of the above.

So, Ms. Norgaard, based on scientific sociological evaluation, who is in need of treatment for mental illness?

Rush Limbaugh's Sweet Victory

Submitted by berlet98 on Wed, 04/04/2012 - 5:22pm.

Rush Limbaugh's Sweet Victory

After the FOX News Channel, Rush Limbaugh has been the most potent voice of conservatism in America for a generation, a virtual dagger in the sides of liberals who, until the advent of FOX and the growth and popularity of talk radio, had enjoyed a decades-long monopoly on what and how news was reported and whose opinions would be heard by the public.

FOX has long been in the liberal crosshairs as has Limbaugh but, most recently, Rush has been the liberal target of choice since they believe they could more easily take down and destroy an individual than a billion dollar cable network.

As with the lib campaign to discredit Glenn Beck, who completely recovered after a concerted effort by Media Matters for America, George Soros’ MoveOn.org, and other left wing organizations to silence him, they have failed miserably in their quest to destroy Limbaugh by targeting his advertisers.

The Washington Post’s Paul Farhi admitted that the claim that over a hundred advertisers had dumped Limbaugh was a fraud and he conceded the defeat of the left’s six week boycott on those advertisers even if they haven’t yet given up the fight.

The end result of the battle? Rush lost 2 small market stations of the 600 total that carry his show and 5 advertisers, some of which have tried to return and have been told where to go, and it isn’t to Rush.

The mistake the left consistently makes is underestimating the commitment–and the intelligence–of America’s conservatives. Liberals are so devoid of . . . (Read more at http://www.genelalor.com/blog1/?p=20689.)
