GM Suspends Production of Volt, Blames Media

By Tom Blumer | March 02, 2012 | 20:58

Tom Blumer's picture

Well, I guess when you think you're going to sell 45,000 cars and you're on track to achieve about 25% of that, something's gotta give.

Something gave today, as Government/General Motors announced a temporary suspension of production of the company's centerpiece of environmental correctness, the Chevy Volt, and the layoff of 1,300 employees. Oh, and as readers will see in the Examiner.com excerpt, it's the (cough, cough) media's fault:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

GM laying off 1300 due to low Volt sales

General Motors Co. announced the temporary suspension of Chevrolet Volt production and the layoffs of 1300 employees, as the company is cutting Volt manufacturing to meet lower-than-expected demand for the electric cars.

"Even with sales up in February over January, we are still seeking to align our production with demand," GM spokesman Chris Lee said. The car company had hoped to sell 45,000 Chevy Volts in America this year, according to the Detrot News, but has only sold about 1,626 over the first two months of 2012.

"GM blamed the lack of sales in January on “exaggerated” media reports and the federal government's investigation into Volt batteries catching fire, which officially began in November and ended Jan. 21," the Ann Arbor (Mich.) News (actually, it's at MLive.com -- Ed.) reported.

Surely GM is not referring to the New York Times, which has been overly sympathetic to electric toys -- I mean, cars -- for years. Nick Bunkley's coverage describes the production halt as a "pause."

The company also can't complain about how the Associated Press has covered the Volt story over the years. Today, the related AP story takes artificial solace in GM's move, claiming that "Although the Volt has not been a big seller, the low-emission vehicle has improved GM's reputation for innovation." It also found someone to moan about how "the perception of a safety risk has hurt sales." Fires will tend to do that.

The fact is that the Volt has been cut tons of slack through the years, up to and including its you've-got-to-be-joking designation as Car of the Year by two different auto industry publications.

Perhaps -- only perhaps, because this modern-day Edsel might have flopped even in a great economy -- the biggest irony is that if the GM-owning, "green" car-loving Obama administration had successfully turned the economy around with the right policy prescriptions instead of massive, misguided, counterproductive "stimulus," its pet car company might be having better luck finding 45,000 drivers per year with lots of money ($41,000) and a whole lot less sense to buy the things.

They WERE thinking

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sat, 03/03/2012 - 12:34pm.

No, they knew what they were doing.  I suspect that in the case of hybrids, the majority of the drivers of those putrid things don't have a clue that the batteries in those things will die out in three years(or less) and that they cost about 3500-4000 to replace.  That's because they don't have a clue or didn't do the research(or wouldn't just plain listen).

In the case of these re-Volt-ing electric cars, the same is true that they kept the public in the dark(literally in some cases) by not mentioning the crucial factor about power in that it comes from power plants, the same ones that DuhOne wants to close down.  And I can't believe that people who get these charging stations at their houses aren't saying anything about the exponential rise in electricity bill costs, who pays for that if not the consumer??

So yeah, they think these things through and when enough people are in it hook line and sinker, they'll be in a bad bind without a normal vehicle to rely on and will be forced to rely on mass transportation.  No, there's no "not thinking through" on this, it's all about destroying America's self-reliance and independence which is what the internal combustion engine gives us.  The high gas prices are just part of the same problem of trying to get people away from those to hybrids or the dumbass electric cars.

The Volt has a major flaw in

Submitted by big.league.slider on Sat, 03/03/2012 - 1:44am.

The Volt has a major flaw in its basic business model. It costs far more to manufacture than it sells for. The Toyota Prius has the same problem, but because it was first to market it captured most of the buyers that are more concerned about image than price or value. These image-conscious buyers are willing to pay a large premium for this type of product if it comes from an "environmentally sensitive" company like Toyota, Subaru, or Volvo. But Chevy products do not have this same public perception, so the Volt market cannot support the premium sales prices. If you're an image-conscious liberal, would you buy a $40,000 Chevy Volt or a $30,000 Toyota Prius?

The auto buyer market for over-priced hybrids and EV's is limited, and is rapidly becoming saturated. High-end EV companies like Tesla and Fisker are quickly learning this fact. Tesla and Fisker will both likely be out of business within 2 or 3 years. The Chevy Volt will be out of production in a year or two, when the taxpayer subsidy gravy train comes to halt. Volt production is a huge negative cash flow for GM going forward. Regardless of how much GM juggles its financial reports, shareholders will not tolerate continued production of a car that loses big money.

So, in a Michigan winter, setting outside for 8+ hours, driving to and from in below freezing temps, no way a Dolt could make it to and from, on it's batteries. And, there is not a single charging station in the county we live in, or 3 of the 4 adjoining counties. The one county that has any, the stations are all in downtown Grand Rapids, no help there.

Home charging stations go from about $800 and up, and who knows how much charging the car will cost, especially when electrical rates will "necessarily skyrocket" under Chairman Mao's, er, Chairman Obama's plan.

To re-elect Obama would be like the Titanic backing up and hitting the iceberg again.

The next big push is electric vehicles with batteries that can be swapped out in a few minutes. Here is the next company to invest/throw away your money, Better Place. This will mean you can take your EV out and 'fill up' with a fully charged battery as you approach 'empty' (as long as it's not one of the EV's currently in production). Sounds like a good idea, if you don't spend too much time thinking about it. Like, who wants to stop every 30-120 miles to refuel.

Liar, Liar, Volt on fire

Submitted by CobraMan on Sat, 03/03/2012 - 12:26pm.

So, GE claims that the media's over-hyping of exploding batteries are to blame for the Volt's dismal sales. Is that like how Apple was forced to "temporarily lay off" an x amount of people because the Mac Book's batteries would explode, as the media reported again and again? What's that you say, existing customers just replaced the faulty batteries, for free, while other people continued buying the "faulty" product, knowing of the risk, and the "cure," and no one was laid-off? Humm.. Two similar situations, two radically different outcomes. I wonder.... Are GE's proverbial pants on fire?
.
Come on, GE, be honest with us. You deliberately produced a car you knew would only be used by a VERY limited segment of the population: A young, rich, single urbanite; a condo dwelling, modern day version of a Yuppie who has no need for carrying cargo of any kind, but a large need for displaying the latest status symbol, and NOW you feign surprise when the sales didn't "drift" into the "common market" as you unrealistically expected? How many young, rich, single, modern day Yuppies, who don't already own a Lexus, do you think are out there, anyways? I would say you pretty much saturated the market, there's not too many left to BUY your Yuppie Toy, so how is the MEDIA to blame for your declining sales?

Face it, GE, you make a very poor decision by heavily investing in the production and marketing of a vehicle that would only be bought by about 1 out of every 5,000 potential customers. Who did you consult before you made that decision, Delorean?

Look at the health care crap going on, Obeyme thinks he can make a statement and what he says will be the word of law, and he forces the electric cars, the windfarms, the CFL bulbs, closing down coal fired power plants, and illegal drilling moratoriums and so on, thinking people will just bow down on one knee and just do what he says.(just like Moooochelle and her eating mandates)

And as we are seeing, it's not happening fast enough for him, which is why he's accelerating some of the things that he has been.

A gamble at OUR expence

Submitted by CobraMan on Sat, 03/03/2012 - 1:06pm.

The problem is, that gamble was taken at OUR expense. The US Taxpayer paid for the retooling the production of that Yuppie Toy required for manufacture, remember?

It's too bad that the MSM doesn't have the objectivity necessary to question, in public, the decision made by GM executives to spend tens of millions of dollars of bail-out money to produce a vehicle that everyone knew would only be bought by a very small segments of the population, as well as the decision by the Obama administration to offer a TAX BREAK for those who wished to buy what is nothing more than a Yuppie Toy destined for an extremely narrow margin of the customer base. Of course, in true protectionist fashion, Obama's name is never even MENTIONED in conjunction with the dismal sales of the Volt, even though he, himself, promoted it!

By the way, when was the last time you saw a US President on national TV promoting a commercial product, like Obama did for the Volt? It's the first time I ever saw that! It';s also the first time I ever saw the US government offer a tax break for a single "brand name" product. What, did Obama make a personal investment in the Volt or something? He sure is eager to see it succeed, at the expense of all other manufactures, and even the other models produced by GM! As far as I know, this is unprecedented.

Can you imagine the liberal uproar that would have occurred if, say, G.W. Bush would have gone on TV and promoted the sales of, say, the Ford F150, and offered a tax break to everyone who bought an F150, but no other make or model, just like Obama did for the Chevy Volt? They would call it corruption. They would question his "financial investments" in Ford. They would demand Congressional investigations. They would be calling for his impeachment. Obama? Well, he's just a guy who's trying to help out GM, you know?

GM and Chrysler

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Sat, 03/03/2012 - 1:52pm.

Whoever is Obama's opponent should run with a position that the Federal Government has no business owning GM or Chrysler. I'm not a big fan regarding Presidential edicts, like when Obama raped the bondholders of the old GM and Chrysler, and gave a big portion of the new companies that emerged from his phony managed bankruptcy to the UAW, but here is my idea:

If it's good for the UAW to own a portion of GM and Chrysler, then it's better for them if they own the whole thing.  Force the pension funds of the UAW to buy up the rest of the equity in these two companies and make them "privately held".  Now the UAW will be saddled with the future failure, (or success if that happens), of these companies.  If the UAW wants to keep paying their members crazy compensation packages, so be it, but it will only hasten their demise.

Of course, you have to write into law that there can be no future bailout of the UAW by the Feds.  But this is impractical, because we have seen how the Dems regard the rule of law.  Oh well.

Barry Obysmal, Your Chevy Volt Is Ready

Submitted by Motormouth KOS on Sat, 03/03/2012 - 2:18pm.

You can pick it up in November.

You won't be in office then.

Even with an Obysmal Bailout which makes the actual cost for a Volt equal to $250,000, GM has to shut the line down.

It's the media's fault?

Is it also the media's fault that Ford is making better cars but never took the bailout, you excuse-making clowns?  You're still a joke.

Every time Barry wants to hump how he "saved Detroit" the RNC needs to air a commercial with an interview from Ford.

The free market still works, you pinhead.

Another Screw-Over Obama Failure

Submitted by NathanBickel on Sat, 03/03/2012 - 4:25pm.

Those of us who don't have our heads up Obama's ass, know that big government has no business running a car company. Yet, these same type people are involving themselves in people's sex lives wanting taxpayers to pay for female contraceptives.

In short, Obama continues to screw-over rank-in-file taxpayers. Obama had his fling with being GM's failed Executive. Now, he wants to continue screwing over taxpayers so that unmarried college girls can solicit taxpayers' monies for their "preventive pregnancy health care."

Finally, I suppose Rush Limbaugh was spot on with his recent observant comments. When you (logically) come to think of it, big Obama government, is not only shafting normal American taxpayers, but, he is forcing good people to assist funding his pimping new government policy.

The absolutely

Submitted by Bob K on Sat, 03/03/2012 - 6:44pm.

funniest comment I came across at the ultra far left website democratic underground was this:

"all those freaking billions bush got us into in Iraq could have been spent lowering the cost for Americans to buy vehicles like the Chevy Volt."

Yeah, if we only throw more money at people so they will buy it, it would be a big success. LOL And as they always, they end up saying......It's Bush's fault!

You can't make this crap up.

Midas Touch

Submitted by m1xram on Sun, 03/04/2012 - 3:23am.

Or, in this case, the anti-Midas touch. Everything the WH touches turns to sh*t. We could be ashamed of their incompetence if they weren't doing it on purpose.
