AP Misstates Pro-Life Purpose of Rand Paul's TSA-Caused Missed Flight to DC
A frequent emailer saw a silver lining in Rand Paul's detention this morning in Nashville by the Transportation Safety Administration which prevented him from speaking at today's March For Life rally in Washington: "Best way to get the MSM to mention pro-life rally."
Well, that's largely true. The local Nashville TV station video posted at Real Clear Politics mentions Paul's prolife purpose up-front, as does a commentary by James Fallows at the Atlantic (who incidentally described the rally as "mammoth"). But my emailer underestimated the lengths to which reporters at the Associated Press would go to keep anything pro-life out of a story. In their 750-word report (saved here for future reference, fair use and discussion purposes), Erik Schelzig and Eileen Sullivan completely misstated why Paul wanted to get on the flight he was not able to board -- which also means that their story's headline is incomplete:
Story Continues Below Ad ↓Sen. Rand Paul stopped by Tenn. airport security
Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, the son of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul and a frequent critic of the Transportation Security Administration, was stopped by security at the Nashville airport Monday when a scanner set off an alarm and Paul declined to allow a security officer to subsequently pat him down. The White House said airport security acted appropriately.
Police escorted Paul away, but he was allowed to board a later flight. The security scanner identified an issue with the senator's knee, although Paul said he has no screws or medical hardware around the joint.
Paul, who frequently uses the airport about an hour from his home in Bowling Green, Ky., told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that he asked for another scan but refused to submit to a pat down by airport security.
Paul said he was "detained" at a small cubicle and couldn't make his flight to Washington for a Senate vote scheduled later in the day.
The March for Life Rally at which Paul was to speak went from 12 Noon until 1:30 p.m. Paul's planned participation was before any scheduled events at the Senate, whose first event on the floor schedule did not take place until 2:00 p.m.
Perhaps Paul told the AP about both the Senate vote and the prolife speech; it's extremely hard to believe that he would not have mentioned the prolife event at all. It's much easier to believe that Schelzig and Sullivan decided not to mention it, especially since so many other news outlets -- over 40, based on a Google News search done at 9:10 p.m. on ["Rand Paul" "March for Life"] (typed exactly as indicated between brackets), including the New York Times, the LA Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, Boston.com, UPI, Business Insider, the Washington Post, the Washington Times, and Slate -- got it right.
Paul arrived on a later flight at 1:50 p.m., according to Business Insider. Over six hours after Paul arrived, the pair of AP reporters only told readers that "The TSA said Paul was allowed to board another flight after a different screening," and didn't note that Paul should have been able to be present for most of the Senate's scheduled business if he had chosen to go there after his experience. I guess that disclosing when Paul really arrived would have disrupted AP's deceptive, non-life-mentioning narrative. Can't have that.
How absolutely pathetic.

I heard Rand on FNC and his

I heard Rand on FNC and his account is frightening. The TSA was braking the law detaining him because they cannot detain a Senator for any reason; Judge Napolitano said its in COTUS.

And they said they weren't "detaining" him either. Um, twist the definition much?
You say this is frightening and I'm inclined to agree, but what's even more frightening is that there doesn't seem to be any action taken against the TSA to suffer the consequences for breaking the law. This leaves the TSA free to do whatever the hell they want.
And that's what I'm really sick and tired of these days, Congress and even SCOTUS doesn't seem to want to enforce the law against this bogus potus and his gang of thugs.
It's gotten to the point that I don't care what this administration does anymore because no one's going to do anything to penalize them. Hell, they broke the law again about the budget which was apparently the third time they are doing so and I guess the third(rhymes with turd) time was definitely the charm that nothing's going to happen. What's the point of claiming all this "outrage" if those people won't get off their sorry asses and do what's right? This mess of a WH should have been stopped in the first year ALONE. And now we're in "election year," so guess what, WHO THE HELL CARES ANYMORE??

The Judge is an idiot!

The Judge is an idiot. The only time a member of Congress can not be detained is when they're traveling to or from a Congressional session. As Rand wasn't traveling to attend a session of Congress, unless a definition of Congressional session now includes giving a speech at a private event (I wouldn't past them!) there's no way anyone can justifiably claim that the TSA broke any laws for detaining him.

He was going to a senate vote

CobraMan, he was going to the Senate House to a vote yesterday in addition to the March of Life event that he was going. And according to the Constitution(article 1, section 6):
The Senators and Representatives shall receive a compensation for their services, to be ascertained by law, and paid out of the treasury of the United States. They shall in all cases, except treason, felony and breach of the peace, be privileged from arrest during their attendance at the session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any speech or debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other place.
The TSA violated that, just like they violate everything else they touch.

How does it feel, Rand?
Submitted by CobraMan on Tue, 01/24/2012 - 2:52pm.
Rand, I know you're "upset" at the "treatment" a special individual like yourself, you must be special as you are a Congressman, received, treatment that your constituents have to face every time they travel, so, I must ask, how does it feel to be one of the "little guys" for a change? What's the matter, Rand, did you forget your little pin?
Rand, I have no sympathy for you. As a matter of fact, I am appalled at your arrogance. You're using your position as a member of Congress to demand, yes, demand, special treatment, treatment that most of us will never receive. And, since the TSA has violated your dignity, apparently, you're using your position as a venue to voice your complaints, no doubt as a means of punishing those who dared to violate your dignity. You remind me of Cynthia McKinney. The situations are nearly identical, except for the "racism" charges.

That's not the impression I have -- and besides, he is clearly one of the more outspoken legislators calling out TSA abuses.

Common sense has to trump this TSA bullshit at some point.
Rand Paul
Submitted by Duke C on Tue, 01/24/2012 - 3:45pm.
Make No Mistake, This was a deliberate Act by the TSA. Senator Rand Paul flys out of Nashville, TN; usually on the same Airline, which means the same TSA screening agents on duty. His Luggage and Briefcase are clearly marked with 'US Senate' Business Card attached to briefcase, as are all members of Congress. This was an Orchastrated Smackdown by Big Sis and her TSA brownshirts, probably because of Rand's Father Ron Paul, or some 'other' nefarious reason Janet Napolitano has. This was no 'mistake', And Senator Rand Paul is no 'ordinary passenger' as the White House tried to spin it.
Um, just a thought, really.

If the screener knew that Sen. Paul's father was, in fact, Ronpual, I think they'd have given him a sympathy card, not detained him..
