AP Item on 'Summer Jobs Initiative' Omits That Most of 180,000 'Opportunities' Are Unpaid

An unbylined item appearing at the Associated Press shortly after midnight (captured in full as a graphic here due to its brevity; for fair use and discussion purposes) crowed about how President Barack Obama "is looking to boost summer job prospects for kids," has "gotten commitments for nearly 180,000 youth employment opportunities for next summer," and only says that "Many of the positions would be unpaid training opportunities."

How many? Well, most, according to the Hill's Eric Wasson:

Obama to launch summer-jobs initiative

President Obama on Thursday will unveil a summer-jobs initiative that the White House says is already on track to create 180,000 “work opportunities” in the private sector in 2012.

That is the number of opportunities, which includes mentoring and unpaid internships, that companies have told the administration they are willing to create. Some 70,000 jobs are paid, the White House says.

The initiative was hatched after Congress failed to approve a $1.5 billion summer-jobs fund that President Obama had been seeking as part of the American Jobs Act.

“Today’s announcement is the latest in a series of executive actions the Obama administration is taking to strengthen the economy and move the country forward because we can’t wait for Congress to act,” a White House statement reads.

In 60 days, the administration plans to create a jobs bank in order to facilitate more hiring of youth for summer jobs.

If that "jobs bank" (which by the way probably duplicates dozens which already exist) works like Cash for Clunkers, school will be in session again in August and September before anyone is placed.

The main point though, is that the AP wouldn't tell readers that about 60% of these "jobs" aren't jobs at all (one must get paid to be classified as holding a job and being employed, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics spokesperson). Even Wasson at the The Hill chose to obfuscate a bit by only concentrating on the number of "paid" positions. I doubt that either the AP or Wasson would be so considerate to a Republican or conservative president.

Why do I get the feeling that

Submitted by killa37 on Thu, 01/05/2012 - 6:21pm.

Why do I get the feeling that these 'companies' that are making a deal with the REGIME for these so-called 'jobs', whether they are paid or not, and part of that deal is to 'train' these young people to be of some 'value' to the REGIME.............maybe even as part of the new civilian corps, now that the US military - which would probably NOT be on Barry's side, if the sh*t hit the fan - is being degraded.

And I see that Boy Barry got some very tepid response at some high school speech with some remarks, and even got laughed at by the audience for telling them that 'they inspire him'!!! It would appear that a lot of young people can't even take this poser seriously..................of course, the MSM is WAAAAAAAAAAY behind the curve on that one, and they STILL think he's some kind of deity, or messiah, or D(EAR) Leader.

Really interesting

Submitted by bkeyser on Thu, 01/05/2012 - 6:28pm.

Little to any "journalism" in either the AP or the Hill's reporting. Either the questions they asked revealed some uninteresting answers, or few questions were asked in the first place. All we have is a vague White House statement meant to further the idea that the president is willing to go it alone, and a comment from Hilda saying these are new jobs. Well, I've got lots of questions Hildie:

Where are these jobs? How much will they pay? Are they mostly temporary and part-time positions that'll go away once the summer ends? If they're for the 16-24 age bracket, are we to assume that for most, a college degree is not required? How about a HS Diploma?

And what about these unpaid internships and training opportunities? Who committed them? Is it possible that some of these positions would have been paid jobs had they not enrolled in your program? How many of these unpaid positions are for firms connected to, or are large Obama donors? A glorified go-fer at the Center for American Progress isn't exactly a major achievement for a 24 year old. Nor an unpaid copy boy at WaPo. How many are at AmeriCorps?

Speaking of which- why didn't we see a big push by AmeriCorps at OWS camps? You'd think there would have been AmeriCorps kiosks at every corner. If ever there was a candidate for doing good for Americans and across the world, OWS'ers would seem to be the perfect fit. ??

This is the Left still

Submitted by Van Halen on Thu, 01/05/2012 - 7:27pm.

This is the Left still thinking they can trick us all. What do they think will happen when all the people go to apply for these 'jobs' and find out there's no money involved? Do they REALLY think that will sway them to vote Democrat in 2012?

Who's going to pay for it?

Submitted by CobraMan on Fri, 01/06/2012 - 1:25pm.

"In 60 days, the administration plans to create a jobs bank in order to facilitate more hiring of youth for summer jobs."

Just how does he plan to pay for it? He can't draw upon existing funds, for their isn't any. And he can't simply withdraw money from the Treasury, because he doesn't have that authority. As the Constitution clearly states: NO money shall be draw from the Treasury, but in the consequence of appropriations made by law. As only Congress can make a law, only Congress can authorize Treasury funds expenditures. Congress hasn't authorized this "plan" via legislation. So, Obama, how do you plan to pay for it? I doubt you'll be using your own money for this "plan."

Obama, you took an oath to abide by the Constitution. When will you actually abide by that oath?

That is a funny line: ...because he (Obama) doesn't have that authority.

It is imperative to the nation that the omnipotent one be granted the power to help out us mere mortals. See recess appointments.

America's first Dictator

Submitted by CobraMan on Fri, 01/06/2012 - 1:50pm.

It seems that we finally elected ourselves the Country's first dictator. Every other President in History has gone through Congress in which to implement policies, create departments and the like, especially when it comes to funding those policies, departments, and the like. Even during FDR's Great Expansion, he always went through Congress for authorization, especially when it comes to Treasury expenditures. . The same is true with every other President, with the exception of Obama. he not only ignores Congress, he's now gleefully, proudly, telling America that he's going to do things his way, because HE can't 'wait for Congress to act." He's ignoring the separation of powers. He's withdrawing Treasury funds illegally, unconstitutionally, and he's doing it publicly and with great fanfare . That's what dictators do.

Well, America, I never thought I'd see this happen in my own lifetime. We elected a dictator. How's that for "progress?"

Do you know what the worst part about this is? It's the blatant hypocrisy of the people who support Obama's dictatorship. For the entire 8 years of the Bush administration, liberals, especially amongst the press, shouted, screamed, and fumed about Bush's "illegal," "unconstitutional," dictatorial" Presidency, even though Bush, like every other President before him, went through Congress for things like implementing policies and using Treasury funds in which to accomplish that. For 8 YEARS we heard how bad it was that Bush was acting like a dictator. Well, here comes Obama, who truly acts like a dictator, and now all we hear from those people is how great Obama is for doing this! They fully support a dictator, as long as he's their chosen dictator! The hypocrisy being displayed daily is sickening.

The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States. The US Constitution
