AP's Elliott Goes After GOP Field's 'Flubs,' Finally Mentions Obama's '57 States' -- After 3-1/2 Years
A frequent emailer who happens to be a retired and now-disgusted journalist sent me a link to an Associated Press item by Philip Elliott and which is so over-the-top that you hope that Phil is on the White House payroll. At least then he'd have a justification for a hit piece which might as well have been written by David Axelrod (well, maybe it really was).
By the time I got to "FACT CHECK: GOP field flubs, big and small," Elliott's excretion was far longer. I did find the original elsewhere and want to point to the statement which got my emailer appropriately exercised:

What Elliott is saying is that even though Newt has a perfectly good explanation for why he brought up January 21 instead of January 20, and even though he made the press "gotcha" squad look foolish on substance, it still doesn't count. More generally, my emailer writes: "that last sentence ought to be a killer on the extent to which the AP is in the tank." Indeed.
The longer version time-stamped at 9:43 p.m. and found here got worse, going after five of the candidates, even throwing in a Democrat consultant's insult to George W. Bush as a bonus. Beyond that, Elliott referred to an infamous Barack Obama flub, which I suppose would be fine except for one "little" thing -- as I demonstrated in May 2008, the wire service never covered the gaffe when it happened.
Here are several paragraphs from Elliott's longer report:
Newt Gingrich didn't know when he would take office if he wins the presidency. Rick Perry got the voting age and the date of Election Day wrong. Herman Cain didn't realize the president does not sign amendments to the Constitution.
In ways large and small, Republican presidential hopefuls are proving on multiple occasions to be "factually challenged," as Gingrich rather haughtily described a rival, despite getting some things wrong himself.
Campaigns are long and tough, candidates are often tired and flubs happen. But they are adding up and at some point could give Republican voters pause as they look for the candidate best able to take on the highly polished - though hardly factually infallible - President Barack Obama.
... Frequent flubber Michele Bachmann's suggestion many months ago that the Revolutionary battles of Lexington and Concord took place in New Hampshire was an opening shot, of sorts, in a volley of misfires by the candidates. Those battles were fought in Massachusetts in 1775.
And on Wednesday, she offered another: She would support the United States shutting down its embassy in Tehran - but there is no U.S. Embassy in Iran's capital.
... Cain promoted Chile's retirement system as one that gives workers the option of having private accounts, when in fact they have no choice. Mitt Romney accused Obama of "peacetime spending binges" as if there were no wars going on. Bachmann accused Obama of canceling a Canadian pipeline project that has only been delayed.
... And it's not as if Obama hasn't had his doozies. For instance, Obama said during the 2008 campaign that he had visited 57 states. The United States only has 50.
... "Best case of that is George W. Bush, who couldn't pass a civics quiz to save his life. Emotional intelligence is more important in politics than factual knowledge," (Democratic consultant and former 2008 Hillary Clinton campaign adviser Doug) Hattaway said.
I've got two words for sore loser Doug Hattaway, delivered with all the love in my heart: Bleep you.
Back to Elliott -- It's so nice of Phil to accumulate such a roundup of GOP gaffes, isn't it?
It would have been even nicer if the AP had done something similar during the presidential campaign of Barack Obama in 2007 and 2008, but it didn't. As I noted in that May 2008 post in positing the idea that the AP might have covered Obama's gigantic "57 states" gaffe -- with the support of two searches which came back empty at the time -- I wrote, "Surely you jest." More broadly, I noted that a comprehensive Google News search at the time came back with less than a half-dozen Old Media items covering the gaffe. By contrast, even today, after many original articles have surely disappeared or gone behind archive walls, a Google News Archive search for 1992 on "Quayle potato" (not in quotes) returns 980 items.
Finally, this sentence from Elliott's later report needs to find its way into some kind of journalism double-standards Hall of Shame:
In submitting to what is, in effect, America's toughest job interview, there may be only so much leeway in getting matters of current affairs and history plain wrong.
Well Phil, I guess that's true if you're a Republican or conservative. But the AP appears to have given Barack Obama 3-1/2 years of leeway on his "57 states" gaffe -- which is why calling your wire service the Administration's Press is more than appropriate.

Obama still hasn't figured out the states thingy
Submitted by Gary Hall on Thu, 12/01/2011 - 1:35am.
Worth noting that when he claimed he'd visited 57 states, he volunteered that he still had "one" to go. That'd be 58.
Needless to say, more concerning is that he doesn't understand the constitutional concept of "states rights," either.
Moving on . . .
The lead editorial in the Los Angeles Times today, "The Cain Mutiny," laid it out like this:
Well, actually onthe one little point there, Cain's numbers did indeed drop on his Libya space out (and he lost me there as well), but to be clear, the Democrats (Obama and Biden, to be sure) are committing many more concerning gaffes - not to mention, blatant misunderstandings and misrepresentations of America and international issues - on a regular basis; and, both during their campaigning, and during this failed administration, our national media has guaranteed that most of the voting block never finds out.

. . and they just continue. How in the world educated grown up adults on the LA Times editorial board can come up with such stuff really stretches the imagination. I've had numerous long and intense conversations with several of them - and indeed they are a formidable bunch. But to stand in front of an exhibit that is spewing the evidence daily, and not only not see it, but to turn it all on it's head.
Truly, I believe that there is a deep rooted genetic - physiological - difference in the human brain which involves the white vs grey brain matter in the cerebellum cortex. Many studies have shown that progressive sorts (liberals - artists - teachers) have an excess of white matter. White matter is the fast firing stuff that may create that . . "but what about that," and "what if," confusion in understanding black and white, what's true or false; that interferes with the ability to make a good solid decision based upon what one believes in. Some of the studies have shown that those with more white matter tend to lie more willingly. Why? Well, the fast moving discussion going on in their head, keeps moving the truth.
The opposite is true with those with more grey matter - actually a shortage of white matter. CEO sorts. "Just do it."
When it's balanced -- one can have a great leader. When it's not, ya get a Bill Clinton, a Frank Rich, or a Chris Matthews.

I have a few of those on my ever-growing list of Obama's gaffes, but most of them I've missed.
The ones I have are the Kansas Tornado, 57 States, and Selma. If anyone is feeling helpful, I could use some help with links to the rest.
The "campaign ending" statement from Gary's LA Times link had me rolling my eyes. THAT needed a /s tag.

Night and day difference between the two places.
China was very smart to let HK maintain it capitalistic ways unlike here in the US where Odumbo and his cronies are trying to destroy it.

Submitted by killa37 on Thu, 12/01/2011 - 5:29pm.
Well, I think a lot has happened since 94 over there. I have a ladyfriend there, so I'm in constant contact with China, and I'm always trying to find out anything that I can. I was in southern China fairly recently - not Hong Kong - and it was 'jumping', and also pretty clean and organized and SAFE!!! I know that they have pollution problems and environmental issues, and they're probably a little slow in dealing with them. I also think that there are WAY less roadblocks and restrictions and rules and regulations with regards to business - which may, or may not, be a good thing............but I can tell you first hand that OUR overabundance and layers of these same conditions are deleterious to our business creation - and it's just getting worse and worse, obviously!!!
I think - put simply - that they have a sort of 'modern' style of communist political system, coupled with their own version of a 'capitalistic' economic and business system. Whereas these days - we're just going full speed into traditional socialism and communism - while destroying our own 'capitalism' along the way.
I'd say - even though Boy Barry (and the union thug) like to point to China as a place to emulate - the Chinese people wouldn't want to have a damn thing to do with them, because they would WRECK things in no time at all!!!

A small group of women--political mavericks but nominally Democrat Hillary Clinton supporters--turned over one spade of birther dirt, gave up, decided Sarah Palin was a strong feminine presence worthy of their interest, and soon faded from the birther scene.
After which, in fact almost simultaneously with that minor drama, the smear merchants and nutjobs and even some sensible but highly partisan activists on the right seized the shovel and frantically labored over the ensuing 2-3 years in the construction of a towering monument to fraud and foolishness.
The little birther meme of 'hey, this is a Democrat deal' is just plain silly.
Jer
Well, Jer - I'm not sayin'
Submitted by killa37 on Fri, 12/02/2011 - 1:38am.
Well, Jer - I'm not sayin' that you're wrong or right (or me either, for that matter)..........and I also know that it's a little too late to be trying to chase this issue down.............but, since I live here, I can tell you that there are still a WHOLE lot of ambiguities and non-sequiters and unanswered questions about this whole 'birther' deal - so I'm not sold on the bill of goods that Barry, his handlers, and the MSM want us to believe.
His parents good buddy Neil Uber-commie (that ex-hippie punk-ass little comminist cretin who now happens to be our Governor) doesn't recall seeing little Barry until he was a young baby - and he was one of Barack Sr.'s friends and colleagues, and knew the family. (He has since denied saying that...........who woulda thunk??). And Barry's 'typical white person' grandmother was basially put under lock and key in Honolulu, once Barry became a viable candidate. And - lo and behold - she DIED just a couple of days before his coronation!!! And, prior to that, there was NOTHING wrong with her!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, Jer...........it was just a coincidence, right???
I dunno, Jer...............I used to NEVER believe ANY conspiricy theories.........................but the way things have been going, I have taken a different approach.
I had some landscapers on my last project who were BIG 9/11 conspiricy theorists..........and , of course, they claimed that GWB was complicit on the 'inside job'. I had some interesting conversations with them...............but they stuck to their guns. I haven't talked to them since ol' Obama....I mean....Osama.........was killed by Obama. It seems that the 'truthers' really kept quiet after that, doesn't it??
And they were also BIG Blackwater haters..............Blackwater was the essence of EVIL in our country- even worse that Halliburton!!! Well, my #2 son TRAINED at the Blackwater facility for a couple of months before he was deployed to the Persian Gulf, so I think he could probably elicit some interesting information about the whole thing. I told these guys that when my son finally came back to Hawaii for a vacation, they could talk to him and find out whatever it is that they THINK they knew about it...........since they are all hanging around over here, smoking pot, reading their computers, and not really knowing what the hell is REALLY going on. Ha!!! They didn't seem too interested!!! And I'll tell you something else - my son is ULTRA smart, and he doesn't really have a political agenda - he deals with REALITY - so they're probably going to be missing something that might actually EDUCATE them in ways that they might not have thought about.............and he will be here within the next two weeks, for a nice vacation.
And Jer............did you know that Boy Barry and the REGIME have done MORE business with Blackwater (although they have a new name now), than the EVIL George Bush and Darth Vadar DICK Cheney EVER did???
But - hey - I'll be happy to go surfing with him, and play some music, and hang out............and maybe he'll tell me some stories about the Persian Gulf, or being in Iraq, or Kuwait, or Saudi Arabia, or sitting in his apartment in Bahrain while the helicopters and tanks were squashing the demonstrations at the town square - which he could watch from his window!!! I CAN tell you one thing.............he said he NEVER wants to go to that part of the world again - he said they are 'messed up' (I'm cleaning up his language), and they've been that way for thousands of years. Do we need ANYTHING from them?? My answer is 'NO"!!!
He also has some good stories of the Iranian Navy trying to provoke some international incidents with him.......he wouldn't bite.
Anyway..........the hell with Obama!!! He's the WORST thing that has EVER happened to our country............although it's not just him - because he's too damn stupid to have done it on his own!!! And you KNOW what I'm talking about!!!

It was a man - Philip, a Democrat who gave it legs.
But you forget. It's always about the media. The national MSM made the birther issue an issue - and they only did it because they wanted to use it against the Republicans - to damage the Republicans. 90% of the news on the birther issue these past two years was generated by the media bringing it up -- not because there was something going on to talk about with it. Go back and look at the dozens and dozens of stories. They did not begin with, "Joe, a Republican charged again today that Obama . . bla bla," -- rather, they always began with "what's with it and these kooks and the birther thing." Seldom did they ever have anything there of substance, other than the fact that they wanted to divide the country.

You really missed my point - entirely. Yes, there were a few on the very conservative side, who picked it up running - thanks to the Democrats starting the entire scene. Hey, perhaps they'd done it anyway. So? That's politics.
Seldom did the national media, in it's shrill to slam the "birther" folks, mention WMD or Corsi. Even less, did they mention Philip Berg and the Democrats - that remained a closely guarded secret - censored by the MSM. There's a reason for that.
The MSM (all of them) ignored the effort during the primaries. And then, when you get to the shrill of the year leading up to the Trump trumping the story days (he ended it) - the MSM was the ones bringing the story, almost daily, inserted into almost any article, news story, op ed, or editorial.
And, we all know, that if you turn the tables here, and the story is out there about a Republican - it would be the media expending all it's assets to dig up the dirt of the story and "they" would be directly slinging it towards the American people - not to damage the Democrats, but rather to destroy the Republican candidate.

To find real media bias, look for the news outlets that print or broadcast such AP reports. The ridiculous story currently under discussion appeared today in the Des Moines Register, the same newspaper that topped its front page a couple of weeks ago with the article saying an anonymous woman "considered" filing a harassment charge against Herman Cain 12 years ago. There was no specificity on her non-allegations, of course. Astounding. The AP stories don't matter if competent editors around the country recognize the bias. Then again, maybe the editors do recognize the bias inherent in the AP reports. If that's the case, newspapers (like the Register) truly are done for.

Ahhhh..........the Parker Ranch was, at one time, the biggest cattle ranch west of the Mississippi, or something like that. It took up a very large portion of the 'Big Isle', which is what we call the island of Hawaii............which is the furthest island away from me.
So does that still make Boy Blunder an 'Asian'????
All we know for sure

Was it corpsman or corpseman, living Medal of Honor awardee, or a dead one, living veterans in the audience or dead ones that Obama saw, the English embassy or the British embassy, did he bow to the Premier of Red China, or the mayor of Tampa(hint, it was both of them)?
Do explain the nuance to us, Van?

Why is the media silent?
"We are grateful to the Washington Post, the New York Times, Time Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost forty years.
It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subjected to the lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national autodetermination practiced in past centuries."
-David Rockefeller Banker, Founder & Honorary Chairman of Trilateral Commission, Honorary Chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations. Speaking at the June, 1991 Bilderberg meeting in Baden, Germany (a meeting also attended by then-Governor Bill Clinton and by Dan Quayle)
"We are on the verge of a global transformation. All we need is the right major crisis and the nations will except the New World Order."
-David Rockefeller
Should we try a global financial meltdown? It's doable.
