AP on Rubio Assumes He's Still the One on the Defensive Over Parents' Cuban Departure

By Tom Blumer | October 25, 2011 | 00:12

Tom Blumer's picture

Despite all the huffing and puffing over Florida Senator Marco Rubio's alleged "embellishing" at the Washington Post, the fact is that his parents were Cuban exiles (meaning number 5 at link: "anyone separated from his or her country or home voluntarily or by force of circumstances"). That fact essentially undercuts everything about the WaPo article except the problem with the opening sentence of the biography at Rubio's Senate web site, which has been corrected.

That didn't stop two Associated Press writers, Brendan Farrington and Laura Wides-Munoz from doing quite a bit of embellishing of their own (a better word would be "mischaracterizing") in an item currently time-stamped early Saturday morning, while pretending that the rebuttal to the Post written by Mark Caputo at the Miami Herald doesn't exist. The AP pair's pathetic prose has two particular howlers which simply must be debunked.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

First, there's the matter of whether Rubio is getting a break from the Cuban exile community which he somehow doesn't deserve (bolds are mine throughout this post):

So far, prominent members of the Cuban American community are standing by him, including the head of one of Miami's oldest and most respected exile groups, who said Friday that he is willing to give the rising GOP star and tea-party favorite a pass.

Uh, no, that's not what the Cuban exile lead the AP pair quoted said:

The head of the Miami-based Cuban American National Foundation, Pepe Hernandez, himself an exile and longtime opponent of Castro, said Rubio's parents' initial departure date was unimportant.

That's not a "pass." It's an example of "Don't waste our time with this irrelevant garbage. His parents were exiles." . Giving someone a "pass" presupposes that the person involved has done something wrong. There's nothing which requires a "pass."

Second, the AP woefully mischaracterized Rubio's U.S. Senate victory last year to the point of parody:

But Sean Spicer, a spokesman for the GOP National Committee, said the attacks will only strengthen Rubio by causing Republicans to come to his defense. The conservative was elected in 2010 after an upset over the GOP establishment's choice, Gov. Charlie Crist.

Upset? What a joke:

  • Rubio's command of the GOP primary race during the Spring of 2010 was so obvious that incumbent Governor Charlie Crist withdrew before the party's primary even took place.
  • In the general election, Rubio was heavily favored for months and took 49% of the vote. Crist got 30%, and the Democrat received 20%.
  • An "upset," in context, means "to defeat or overthrow an opponent that is considered more formidable, as in war, politics, or sports." Rubio's was the prohibitive favorite on election night.
  • Besides breathtaking ignorance, which I wouldn't buy if claimed, the only reason the AP would want to describe Rubio's win as an "upset" would be to miscommunicate an impression that the election was close. It wasn't; it was an utter rout.
  • Besides, I wasn't upset about the result, and I suspect few readers here were either. :-->

Unfortunately, those who haven't followed the Rubio story closely and are relying on their local paper or broadcaster to relay accurate information will instead find some or all of the AP pair's work. That's why nicknaming the self-described Essential Global News Network as "The Administration's Press" is not at all out of line.

Well, Tom....as a Floridan, and of course...

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 10/25/2011 - 1:13am.

A very EARLY Marco supporter, let me flesh out these idiots' "story".

Marco Rubio announced for the Senate seat which was prematurely vacated by the RINO Mel Martinez (who was also the ineffectual Chair of the RNC as well)....in order that his good pal, the RINO McCrist would have a clear run at the seat.

The RINO McCrist, being too timid to do something so BOLD as to appoint himself to the seat, appointed yet another RINO, Lemieux (for the life of me I can't think of that idiot's first name) to be a place holder, by prior agreement, for two years...at which point he would graciously give up the game in favor of his pal Charlie.

Enter bad little Marco. This made Charlie mad. On the very day he entered the race, John Cornyn, R-TX, coincidentally, Chairman of the Senate Republican Committee endorsed the RINO McCrist....who at that point in time, had a whopping 70+ percent approval rating as governor of this great state, and a lead over the upstart Rubio of at least 30 points.

Marco fought and fought. Charlie married a socialite beard. Charlie tried and tried, but Marco (and that pesky new Tea Party thing) just kept changing the debate. Charlie's "sure thing" kept kinda/sorta evaporating. Charlie thought it might be kinda cool to kiss up to Barack Obama, the SUPERSTAH! and even hugged him upon receiving Porkulus funds.

The voters of this great state became more and more disgusted at the sheer opportunism of Gov. Charlie. And the Republican Establishment. Specifically, Charlie McCrist moderated, and moderated, and moderated his "repub" creds....and when being sorely kicked by the fabulous conservative, Marco, ultimately told the Republican Party to F! Off!, became and Independent.

MARCO WON THE SENATE SEAT. Whilst becoming the "darling" of conservatives. He is, of course, the REAL DEAL. He can actually walk and chew gum at the same time, unlike a certain CINC who has 92 gaffes on my personal blog (to date....tomorrow's another day, Scarlett!).

Addendum to the story. I read today that Mrs. Beard, who is in a mean custody battle with her ex, has now changed her voter registration to Democrat. Can Charlie be far behind? He is, after all, attempting to resurrect his dead political career. (Check out the UK Daily Mail....none of the American press will cover this story).

Stay tuned.

All I know is this....Marco is going to kick ass for a GOOD, LONG time....and Woot! He's my Senator. Someday, truly, I hope to call him "President Rubio".

A Rubio presidency...

Submitted by NevadanConservative on Wed, 10/26/2011 - 2:20am.

 Sounds good.

My concerns about one may sound weird, but I like to think I'll be heard out.

With the shamelessness of the manor born, the Dems seem to be getting their seats as though owed, inheirited and other means. On the more dextrous and hardworking side of the aisle, though, we have to EARN seats. If Senator Rubio -does- go for the Presidency, I'm sure hoping that he has someone that can do a real good job of filling his seat. \

En tangent... do any of you good folks have an idea about when the hydra that is the GOP presidential field will get thinned down?

I'll admit that I do not, and it scares the sugar outa me.

At the risk of giving the statist operatives that infect this forum any information of value (to include the correct time),  and knowing that it's been pointed out before, it's time to repeat.

The one asset the statistsdo not have complete control is one both they and genuinely free people have to deal with cointinually... TIME. We do well to have our bunch thinned down to at least two, and it'd be even greater if that pair had a VP picked as well. That way we could get over the divisive stuff, go through the primary season like statist legislation through a goose, and have a whole by heaven humoungous truckload of momentum to finish the  election with.

TIme is,unfortunately,a double edged sword. The senior senator of AZ only named his VP as late as he did to give the statist agitprop muckrake machine as little time as possible. All of the strategy wonks in the GOP do well to be off the dime RIGHT FLAMING NOW to use this enemy/friend asset to its best ability in our favor.

One other factor that will be needful in this Main Event (and no one here had better doubt that it is anythiing less. No? Think twice.)  and that is a little inhouse humility. PRINCIPLES should not be checked at the door. EGOS should. If whomever gets the nomination and someone else doesn't, leave the butt hurt and recriminations for later and get behind the nominee with everything you've got.

I've oft before said that this IS the "Rendezvous with Destiny" that Reagen spoke of.  There is nothing in the late news that dissuades from that assertion. My local bookie contact has been taking less and less action of there even being an election and of that, it's been 7:6. (Wonder how he collects...) I'd sure like some surety for the next few months, 'cause holding my breath that long turns me this unhealthy shade of blue.

Rambling... feh. I will be consulting with my Kentucky friend over here to get some sleep tonight.

I have to disagree with you

Submitted by motherbelt on Tue, 10/25/2011 - 8:27am.

I have to disagree with you Tom...they don't "assume" he's still on the defensive; they're trying to KEEP him on the defensive.

It's becoming more clear by the day that "journalism" deserves the quotes I've begun using around it.

They're not stupid, in spite of the appearance.

First of all,  the AP uses the term "So far...."  to imply that that could change any day (if they can come up with enough dirt).

Then they use "give him a pass."  The KNOW that implies excusing something that's wrong, and it's deliberate.

They know exactly what they're doing.

When will they learn

Submitted by John21 on Tue, 10/25/2011 - 8:48am.

The liberal press still live in the 70's and believe that they have some credability outside of the far left. No one believes even half of what they say and they have been caught doing the same kind of hack reporting as this all too often.
I do not know Mr. Rubio, I am not from Florida but all that I have heard about him is positive and (garlic to the press) honest. The hacks of the AP have been boing this kind of reporting for decades. The following quote is appropriate for todays version of the media.

Here lies our sovereign King
Whose word no man relies on
Who never said a truthful thing
Or ever did a wise one

Don't forget the Clinton interference either

Submitted by GW on Tue, 10/25/2011 - 9:41am.

That early one morning, Bill Clinton called the D Senate candidate and asked him to drop out in order to give Crist more support. That would not have been done if Rubio's was not expected to win. No way was Rubio's victory an upset.

Blonde, the first name you're looking for is "George". He still sends me an e-mail update. I have no idea why.
