Cain's Convincing Fla. Straw Poll Win Refutes Press Meme That GOP Nomination Is a Two-Person Race

By Tom Blumer | September 24, 2011 | 21:29

Tom Blumer's picture

Herman Cain won the Florida straw poll tonight, winning the votes of 37% of those who participated. No other candidate came within 20 points of Cain.

As of 8:20 p.m., roughly two hours after the result was announced, the Associated Press's Philip Elliott and Kasie Hunt had a blatantly obvious contradiction in their 6:51 p.m. story ("Perry works to show he's strongest GOP contender"; saved here for future reference, fair use, and discussion purposes), as seen in this comparison of Paragraph 2 to Paragraphs 12-14 (bolds are mine throughout this post):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

(Paragraph 2)

Perry lost a key test vote in Florida to businessman Herman Cain on Saturday after making a strong effort to win. Perry's second-place finish in the straw poll came just days after he faltered in a debate in Orlando, Fla.

(Paragraphs 12-14)

Cain captured 37.1 percent of the vote at Saturday's Presidency 5 straw poll in Orlando, with Perry coming in second with 15.4 percent. Mitt Romney came in third with14 percent and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania followed with 10.88 percent. (Complete standings are here -- Ed.)

While all declared candidates were on the ballot, the first-tier candidates did not compete. Perry bought hundreds of activists' breakfasts on the sidelines before heading to Michigan. Romney skipped and didn't send representatives to the forum. Romney and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota both left Florida before the voting began and their campaigns discounted the straw poll's role in the campaign. Bachmann finished eighth with 1.51 percent in the straw poll.

The results were unlikely to shuffle the campaign's standings. Instead, they were mostly a popularity contest among the delegates selected by local party organizations.

Geez guys, make up your minds:

  • Was it a "key test vote," as you said in Paragraph 2, or "mostly a popularity contest" that was "unlikely to shuffle the campaign's standings," as stated in Paragraph 14? Did the straw poll lose significance only because Cain won by huge margin?
  • Was Perry "making a strong effort to win" the straw poll, as stated in Paragraph 2, or was he a "first-tier candidate" who "didn't compete"? Or, as could be inferred, is Perry somehow not considered a first-tier candidate?!?

The current burial of the details of Cain's victory at the bottom of the AP story (Note: This was still the case at the AP's national site as of 9 p.m.) gives away the reporters' preconceived notion that the race for the GOP nomination is a two-person, Perry-Romney contest. Cain's victory, regardless of what one might think of his final prospects, demonstrates that it isn't. I daresay this does not please the AP and a large swath of the establishment press, which wants us to believe that only Perry and Romney matter.

A drop-dead obvious example of that predisposition, assisted by establishment Republicans, appeared at the AP this afternoon from headline to finish in a story by Ms. Hunt. Also note the gratuitous dig at Michele Bachmann:

Perry, Romney look beyond early-voting states

Mitt Romney and Rick Perry are the only two Republican presidential candidates who can afford to spend their time and money in states that aren't first on the primary calendar.

That helps explain their appearances Saturday in Michigan, where GOP voters will have their say in 2012, but only after Iowa, New Hampshire and several other states that second-tier contenders must win to survive.

... "It's really about these two up here," said Jase Bolger, the speaker of Michigan's House of Representatives.

... While Romney and Perry played to the GOP faithful on this resort island in the Great Lakes, their rivals were scattered.

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman was in New Hampshire, where he's staked his candidacy. U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota was busy fundraising as she struggles to remain a relevant force in the race. Businessman Herman Cain, U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania were in Florida, site of a straw poll.

Given how the press has been inclined to bury candidates who don't meet predetermined expectations in early primaries in past presidential election years, it's beyond weird that Ms. Hunt would choose to describe Perry's and Romney's Michigan visits as presumptive indicators of strength. Does she really believe, as would appear to be the case, that Romney can afford to lose New Hampshire, or that Perry can afford to do poorly in Iowa, without suffering serious damage to their candidacies?

Nice try, Phil and Kasie. No sale. Cain's triumph tonight demonstrates that the race is wide open, no matter how much you might wish that it were otherwise.

Yeehaa, Looks like lots of hard work paid off

Submitted by upcountrywater on Sat, 09/24/2011 - 9:38pm.

This week, Governor Rick Scott pointed out that the winner of the Presidency 5 straw poll would go on to win the nomination. He explained that former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush, plus 1995 GOP nominee Bob Dole all won Florida straw polls.

"Thank you to the Republican voters for this incredible honor of being named the winner of the Presidency 5 straw poll in Florida today," Cain said. "This is a sign of our growing momentum and my candidacy that cannot be ignored. I will continue to share my message of 'common sense solutions' across this country and look forward to spending more time in Florida, a critical state for both the nomination and the general election."

On Friday evening, Scott Plakon, the Americans for Prosperity- Florida Legislator of the Year who represents the state's 37th district, endorsed Herman Cain in front of more than 1,000 cheering supporters at the Rosen Center in Orlando, Fla. Scott is best known as the sponsor of the Florida Health Care Freedom Act, slated to be Amendment 1 on Florida's 2012 general election ballot.

"I'm proud to support Herman Cain. Our country is suffering right now from bad ideas, bad policies and bad leadership. Herman Cain has the right ideas, the right policies and is a proven business and conservative leader," Scott explained. "Over the last few days at the Orange County Convention Center, I've seen him connect with Florida voters like few candidates I've ever seen. I look forward to working with Herman Cain to see him win Florida and to become the next President of the United States."

In addition to being named the victor of Thursday night's FOX News/ Google/ RPOF Republican presidential candidate debate and the straw poll, Cain spent the entire week in Florida, touring the Sunshine State on his nationwide "Common Sense Solutions Bus Tour," addressing CPAC Florida and speaking at the Presidency 5 festivities.

You Didn't Build That.

Herman Cain were the nominee or even ended up on the ticket as VP nominee, it would drive libs nuts. Any Black who is not a democrat is something they just cannot fathom or handle. And the thought of something like that causing Black voters to say "Hey, wait a minute, this guy makes sense and he's one of us too." absolutely terrifies them. Of course, comments I have been reading on liberal websites are funny. They are convinced if a Black man was on the ticket it would cause million of conservatives to not vote at all. LOL.

Uncle Tom references. The House Negro definitions. The "Is he black enough?" question. They will "dig up" an Anita Hill type employee to falsely accuse Mr. Cain of horrible treatment as an employer, or a white Tawana Brawley. Sharpton and Jackson will not praise his rise to the top of the political game.

Mr. Cain terrifies them. They want to run against Mitt-stake, believing that millions of "real" Christians will not vote for the Mormon! They wanted to run against McCain, and we let them. We lost. It cannot happen again.

The TEA Party will not allow that...

That is why Mitt-stake also has "loved the TEA Party deep in his heart" alhough he ignored them and avoided them until he saw what a force they were!

Huntsman is a democrat, and everyone knows it.

There can no longer be any settling on the best of the worst. I have been posting that long before Bachmann said it. The TEA Party is equally resolved to getting rid of the "reach across the aisle" moderate McCain type sell outs. And the sell outs know it.

You would have to know about how the RNC supported Link the dink Chaffee over Steve Laffey in a Senate primary when Laffey was the choice of republicans over the RINO. The RINO who did not vote for Bush and then supported Obama for president. That primary, won by Chaffee, led to Sheldon the Lisp Whitehouse (D-RI) taking the seat! In a way, Laffey could be considered a TEA Party member long before the TEA Party came to be.

Long story short, NO MORE WORKING WITH THEM. It is the same as electing a democrat in the first place, which means we know up front that we will get hosed. Mitt-stake will hose us and then blame us. BTW... If you do not have Romneycare in Massatwoshitts and are a citizen, the fine is 2K per year. That only applies to US Citizens, as illegals do not file taxes, do not have private health insurance or public romneycare, and do not get fined, while using emergency rooms for common colds. Arrival mode? Ambulance! Do the math and see who is being screwed.

I was reading comments to a thread about Cain's straw poll big win at the website DU. Here's a few:

"I am shocked the racist republicans picking a 100% black man, for crying out loud Cain does not even have a white mother"

" If both the D and the R candidate are black ...... the Teabaggers WILL secede."

" I wanna see his birth certificate! And not a copy, either! I mean the original long-form issued by Hell!"

Other threads were screeching he should be disqualified for any office because of having had colon cancer. And of course they had to hit his being a Republican:

"He Has A Far Worse Disease...He's a black rushpublican. Chances of him ever being nominated: .0000001%."

They are already getting scared, it is clear.

Are we to assume that, because the MSM dictates to us, that a man who sticks to the issues, does not attack fellow "republicans", and outlines a simple, cohesive plan for tax relief... Could actually be supported by voters? And I may be wrong, but I thought Mr. Cain was black. How would racist TEA Party voters, and a majority of racist republicans actually support a black man? Should Cain win the nomination, and I hope he does, how will the media be able to play the race card on both Cain, and the republican voters? And MSDNC broke the mold on Sharpton? Looks like the republicans broke the MSM bias mold!

Bachmann went on the HPV attack... again. Sorry, but I got it the first time.
Perry and Romney have dueling books to sell, and continued the sniping at one another. Elitist republican establishment members.
Gingrich is great at one liners directed at the media, has experience, but his experience is also baggage for him. The dems will tear him up.
Huntsman is just lost.

What if "racist" Republicans nominate Cain?

Submitted by nkviking75 on Sat, 09/24/2011 - 11:45pm.

I think we're on the same plane here. The MSM and the Dems (but I repeat myself) will maintain that Republicans are both too racist to vote for Cain and so desperate that we'd put up a black man to neutralize Obama's race advantage. While I haven't chosen my candidate yet, I can safely say I'd be very proud to have Herman Cain as my president. Besides, he saved my favorite pizza chain. What's not to love?

In the end, Perry will win

Submitted by big.league.slider on Sat, 09/24/2011 - 10:25pm.

In the end, Perry will win the nomination.

Conservative voters were told in 2004 and 2008 that we needed to hold our noses and pull the lever for the "moderate" GOP nominee that the party elites deemed electable. We were subjected to 4 years of big government republicanism under GWB, and a failed bid by the big government republican McCain. It won't happen again. Most conservatives see Romney for what he is, another pandering, big government republican. He couldn't even beat a weak primary candidate like McCain in 2008.

During the primaries, the GOP candidates are going after each other over issues that set them apart from each other. After the primaries are over, the GOP nominee will return to focusing solely on their single biggest winning issue: the economy and jobs. And Perry is the only candidate with an established jobs/economy record to run on.

Big Team Slider where do you live in the world. George W Bush was President 8 years He lost controll after six years in office when the media got a maximum number of Democrats elected to the Senate and House. Those Senators are up for election this next year. If just all the people who they have sent to the unemployment lines vote against them they will be on the unemployment line.

Avitar, Yes, I know GWB was

Submitted by big.league.slider on Sun, 09/25/2011 - 1:47am.

Avitar,

Yes, I know GWB was president for 8 years.

But if you recall the 2000 election, you'd also agree that during the campaign, candidate GWB sure talked a good conservative game, just like Romney. So I voted for him. But once in office, he showed himself to be nothing more than a pandering, big government republican. So I did not vote for him in 2004. Nor did I vote for McCain in 2008 for the same reason. And I would not vote for Romney in 2012 for the same reason.

How is Romneycare different from Obamacare? How is GWB's multi-trillion dollar medicare prescription drug program different from Obamacare? How is GWB's federal multi-billion dollar NCLB mandate different from Obama's sops to the NEA? How is McCain-Feingold different from the lib's Fairness Doctrine?

We're told by the GOP elites that we need to support a candidate that is "electable", like GWB, Dole, McCain, or Romney. Otherwise we'll end up with a socialist like Gore or Obama that will increase government spending and reduce our civil freedoms. Sure, OK.

One thing is certain. Come the morning of Wednesday, November 7th, 2012, I'll still have my sense of personal integrity intact. Because I'll have cast my vote for the presidential candidate that best reflected my sense of values, rather than the one that was the lesser of two evils.

The fact that it was a runaway win is HUGE. Perry will like be a Fred Thompson situation, as far as being top dog while he's still new. But I think that's going to change in a big way. He likely has alot of money to stay in longer than Thompson, but I think his "newness" is wearing off pretty fast.

The media better give Herman Cain his due. The more people hear Cain, the more people like him. And while Perry and Romney stand in the middle of the stage throwing all the "I know you are but what am I" back and forth, others can move up.

Also.................when Perry says people not wanting to give illegals education (or some crap like that) don't have a heart, I'm done. Take your "dont have a heart" crap and stuff it. I've heard enough of that from liberals.

Keep up the good work Herman. The positive message, the actual plans. Americans will embrace that.

Honkies for Herman bumper stickers

Submitted by Dave. on Sun, 09/25/2011 - 5:48pm.

Here.

LOL - They aren't actually authorized by the Cain campaign, but that doesn't seem to matter to most.

I think Neal Boortz might have thought it up, as the first time i saw it it was on his site.

There is also a Honkies for Herman blog.

That is awesome Dave...

Submitted by USMC8411 on Sun, 09/25/2011 - 12:17pm.

Could this issue actually be the game changer for Mr. Cain? I cannot say enough how impressive he was for sticking to the issues and continuously forwarding his "plan" which needs tweaking, but I would bet hands down that Mr. Cain would surround himself with real world advisors!

Isn't it funny that the MSM isn't celebrating the republican diversity after the FL straw poll results?

The last thing we need is for

Submitted by ThePickle on Sun, 09/25/2011 - 12:40pm.

The last thing we need is for the MSM to "hand pick" our nominee like they did with McLame in 08. The minute the MSM begins touting the "electability" of a Republican Primary Candidate I know that person will be the worst possible Candidate for Conservatives.

The MSM only views Republicans as "electable" if they routinely sell out their own party in the name of compromise and can be depended upon to provide "attack" sound bites against the more conservative members of the party.

McLame fit that bill to a tee.

A devastating blow to Romney campaign

Submitted by Conservator on Sun, 09/25/2011 - 2:38pm.

I might be the only person in America who believes Mr. Cain's victory in Florida's straw poll hurt Perry, but annihilated Romney. Every article I've read on the Florida GOP presidential straw poll suggests the results were based on Perry's poor performance in the Republican debate on Thursday night. If so, why didn't the voters give the victory to Romney?

Some might say it's because he didn't compete in the Straw Poll like Perry. Yet I find it hard to believe that registered CPAC attendees would have bypassed Romney, a top tier candidate, to vote for Cain who has been at best 'an also ran candidate' in the polls to date.

I was an early supporter of Mr. Cain, but I allowed myself to be influence by polls and the MSM that he had no chance. Cain may not win the Republican primary, but he's proven that he's no longer an also ran candidate. And I think we'll see his poll numbers improve greatly from here.

Nice win for Cain

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Sun, 09/25/2011 - 3:59pm.

It's great to see Cain win the FL straw poll. Anything that helps him get publicity is a good thing for conservatives and Republicans. That said, I don't put a lot of credence in these straw polls. Straw polls are not representative of the Republican primary voters. It's all about organizing and spending money and getting your delegates to the physical location of the actual straw poll.

Blonde,

I saw your comments and read them earlier. I'm guessing that Rubio actually participated in that straw poll. Didn't Florida hold a bunch of straw polls before the 2010 election? (And was your post actually in another thread? I can't seem to find them here anymore.)

Yes, and he won them all

Not sure, KF, whether it was elsewhere.

But I think Cain has a good shot. Just hope the palinization isn't too brutal, although he's bound to get MsM coverage now, so those who aren't political junkies will become familiar with him, which is great.

Straw Polls are odd

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Sun, 09/25/2011 - 5:34pm.

Bachman wins in Iowa and finishes last in Florida? That's kinda weird. I'm guessing she spent a ton of money in Iowa and didn't spend much at all in Florida.

What would be impressive about Cain's victory in Florida is if he spent the same or less then Perry. I haven't seen much info on what candidates spent though.

Kingfish,

Submitted by Agnostic on Mon, 09/26/2011 - 8:50am.

at this stage it is still mostly about name-recognition and familiarity. Bachman is better known around Iowa and Cain has better name recognition in Florida. The way the primary system is set up it is more about momentum and name recognition then issues - imo.

Don't like Perry or Romney

Submitted by Apache on Mon, 09/26/2011 - 8:43am.

These guys just seem fake and will say anything they think will net them the win. Perry managed to beat Romney in the level of obnoxiousness. In that regard they are no different than Obama. Herman Cain comes across as very genuine. Maybe not the best 'candidate' but the best president. He is a smart guy. But even if he was dumb we have seen how so-called 'smart' guys work out. We just really need someone who is genuine and sincere. So he could pull this off.
