New Term For an Obama Fib: He 'Over-suggested'
Bruce Siceloff at the Raleigh News & Observer had the task on Tuesday of writing up the results of his newspaper's follow-up investigation into the safety of bridges in the Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina area after Barack Obama's visit there last week. In a speech there, the President asserted that "In North Carolina alone, there are 153 structurally deficient bridges that need to be repaired. Four of them are near here, on or around the Beltline. Why would we wait to act until another bridge falls?"
I know this will come as a total shock to readers -- not -- but the president wasn't being truthful. Behold what Siceloff and his paper found, and how he felt compelled to come up with a new word to describe Obama's untruthful characterizations (HT to Rush Limbaugh, who brought this up on the air today):
Worry not: Triangle's bridges are safe
President Barack Obama scared some of us last week when he stopped in Raleigh to pitch his American Jobs Act.
He told an audience at N.C. State University that the nation should beef up spending to repair bad bridges - before one of them falls on us.
"In North Carolina alone, there are 153 structurally deficient bridges that need to be repaired," Obama said Wednesday. "Four of them are near here, on or around the Beltline. Why would we wait to act until another bridge falls?"... readers wondered whether there really was cause for alarm.
... DOT engineers and administrators are fielding calls about the president's remarks, too. They say the bridges around the Beltline and across the state are safe.
"The key thing is: We don't have any bridges that are about to fall," said Wally Bowman, DOT's division chief for Wake and six neighboring counties. "We don't have any bridge out there that is structurally inadequate, where it cannot handle the traffic. We make sure those bridges stay in a good state of repair."
Obama appears to have undercounted his bridges. And at the same time - employing the deft spin that political speakers use when they spice up a little information to make a big impression - the president may have over-suggested the risk to public safety.
Dictionary.com says that "over-suggest" is not a word. Neither is "oversuggest."
As one would expect, Rush had some choice words today concerning the qualify of Siceloff's reportage (bolds are mine):
There's a story in the Raleigh News & "Disturber" recently about Obama's trip there and the bridges. Last week in the Raleigh area, Obama was there, and during his speech to a bunch of skulls full of mush at a university, he said that the bridges in Raleigh were about to come tumbling down unless we passed this stupid bill. That was the message he left everybody with. Dangerous situation. Bridges, in some cases in a state of urgent disrepair, (imitating Obama) "We need to pass this bill now, pass this bill today, so we can fix those bridges." So finally ten days after he's gone the local media is starting to ask, "Well, how many bridges are in danger of spilling unsuspected drivers into the drink?" And it turns out none. The Raleigh News & "Disturber" went out and did their own survey, apparently.
Here's a pull quote. "Obama appears to have undercounted his bridges. And at the same time - employing the deft spin that political speakers use when they spice up a little information to make a big impression - the president may have over-suggested the risk to public safety." Over-suggested is how lapdog media defines lying? Obama may have over-suggested the risk to public safety? The headline of the story is: "Worry Not, Triangle's Bridges Are Safe." We all knew that they were.
... I love that Raleigh News & Observer. Obama "over-suggested" the danger of the bridges. A new away for lapdog media to define lying. Obama "over-suggested." Yeah, I didn't default on my mortgage; my bank over-loaned. No, no, no, no, I wasn't stalking that Hollywood actress! I was over-admiring. (laughing) Over-suggested. ...
... They went out and they can't find one that is in a state of disrepair. They can't find one that's in danger of collapse. Not one! I mean, this is presidential panic. This is Ted Mack and the original amateur hour. That's precisely what this is.
The competition for minimizing the reality of President Obama's words and actions in the media is fierce. After all, Solyndra, according to the Associated Press, is an "embarrassment." Heaven forbid that anyone in the establishment press call it what it really is: a "scandal" and, as described by Andy McCarthy at National Review, a "fraud."
Then there was the AP's May description of Obama's failure to comply with the 60-day requirement to seek congressional authorization for continuing to have U.S. troops involved in Libya under the War Powers Act. In this instance, AP told its readers that Obama was merely "skipping a legal deadline." Uh, no; he was breaking the law.
In July, Kevin Sack at the New York Times wrote that during the 2008 campaign and the runup to the passage of Obamacare, Obama had "mischaracterized a central anecdote about his mother’s deathbed dispute with her insurance company," leaving "the clear impression that his mother’s fight was over health benefits for medical expenses." In other words, he made audiences believe that his mother didn't have health insurance as she fought ovarian cancer, when she did. There's a three-letter word for this. It begins with "L," ends with "E," and has the ninth letter of the alphabet in the middle.
Add Bruce Siceloff's "over-suggested" howler to the list of nominees for the Obama Administration Whitewash Hall of Shame. Paraphrasing the late Roy Scheider in "Jaws" ("we're going to need a bigger boat"), when it comes to the just-mentioned Hall of Shame, we're going to need a bigger building.

I'm not saying that this was in and of itself a bad thing, but the dues collected from those workers flowed up throug the union bosses' hands and into Democrat campaign funds. States that were controlled by Republicans got a much smaller percentage of the money and the yhad a tendency to spend it more wisely. What's the main driver for Stim II? The first batch of money is gone and there are campaigns to run.

He's got his agencies regulating what he couldn't legislate when he had majorities in both Chambers of Congress, keeping those employers reluctant to part with potential wage money that may be needed to pay increased taxes and healthcare costs for those employees they do have.

By next year, our illustrious free press will have no credibility left, none. When you see stuff like this, you have to wonder what are they here for if they won't even investigate a story like this and question him, during a press conference, until he admits he screwed up.

Rush and "facts" are like sunshine to a vampire...
Submitted by Jer on Fri, 09/23/2011 - 1:57am.
Obama's "over-suggestion" was minimal, if it existed at all. The Raleigh News & Observer overstated the implications of the President's words. A few readers overreacted to his speech. And Rush Limbaugh's overblown spin bordered on an outright lie..
This is the verbatim comment of the President regarding bridges throughout the state of North Carolina, including those near the Beltline:
"This is a common sense idea. Governor Perdue can tell you--there are a lot of roads and a lot of bridges that need fixing. There is a lot of work that needs to be done in schools and airports. All these things are in need of repair. In North Carolina alone, there are 153 structurally deficient bridges that need to be repaired. Four of them are near here, on or around the Beltline. Why would we wait to act until another bridge falls?...."
Limbaugh claimed incorrectly that Obama said "the bridges in Raleigh were about to come tumbling down" [unless we passed this stupid bill] Obama of course said no such thing. You peddled a falsehood, Rush.
Obama actually undercounted the number of structurally deficient bridges and correctly noted many needed "fixing" and "repaired". Limbaugh incorrectly contended the Observer went out and performed its own survey and couldn't find one bridge in a state of disrepair. (What the Observer actually did was check the public records and obtained a quote from the DOT division chief for several neighboring counties who said that "no bridges were about to fall" [an assertion Obama never made] and that "we make sure those bridges stay in a good state of repair." What Rush fails to mention is that there are indeed bridges in NC (and across the nation) which ARE deteriorating, and the prevention of deterioration to dangerous levels requires constant maintenance and repair as well as money--and lots of it.
The Observer summarizes the nature and scope of this daunting task as follows:
Four major Raleigh bridges listed as structurally deficient are on schedule for replacement....
Crosby [a spokesman for AAA rating service] said DOT does a good job of keeping bridges in shape and deciding--with minimal political interference--which ones should be replaced first.
"They just don't have the funds to keep up with the deterioration, and that's where the problem occurs," Crosby said. [Italics mine]
"There's no public appetite for increasing the gas tax to work on these things, just no appetite for paying for these repairs. The fact that Obama is bringing attention to it is a good thing."
The following is a segment of the AAA report on the top twenty substandard North Carolina bridges:
http://North Carolina Construction News Friday, 6 May 2011 AAA lists top 20 NC substandard bridges
A 40-year old bridge along I-277 in Mecklenburg County carrying more than 110,000 vehicles daily is rated North Carolina’s top substandard bridge, according to AAA Carolinas. The bridge overpass, built in 1971 is the youngest on AAA’s 2011 Top 20 list of substandard bridges but is one of the county’s most heavily traveled highways.
AAA has been rating the state’s bridges since 1998 giving extra emphasis to the amount of traffic a bridge carries because of the effect on commuters and travelers. The average age for a bridge on AAA’s Top 20 is 49 years old.
Bridges in Guilford County and Forsyth County, built in 1955, came in second and third, respectively, on AAA’s annual report of substandard bridges in North Carolina. The Guilford County bridge carries I-40/I-85 Business traffic across South Buffalo Creek and the Forsyth County bridge carries I-40 Business traffic across Liberty Street.
“In ten years we have never had a bridge built more recently than 1955 top AAA’s list,” said Tom Crosby, vice president of communications at AAA Carolinas. “The heavy traffic plays a major role in the ranking, since it affects tens of thousands of commuters daily. As federal stimulus money dries up in North Carolina, we need to find new sources of funding for our state’s Department of Transportation.”
North Carolina has one of the nation’s largest state maintained highway system and is also responsible for 18,290 bridges. Substandard bridges account for 29 percent of all bridges, a 1 percent increase from last year.
Neighboring states have historically done a better job of addressing their bridge and road needs. Their substandard bridge ratios are: Virginia 26%, South Carolina 22%, Tennessee 20% and Georgia 19%.
North Carolina legislators are contemplating capping the state’s gasoline tax, which would hinder the amount of funds available to the state Department of Transportation for bridge and road improvements. Limiting the tax to 32.5 cents a gallon (it is 32.2cents currently and due to increase 2 cents a gallon in July) would cost DOT an estimated $97 million in revenue.
The state has been dealing with annual shortfalls ranging from $500 million to $351 million over the past decade. Last year, it was only able to commit $96 million towards bridge maintenance and repair. The Yadkin River Bridge carrying I-85 traffic through Rowan County has been on AAA’s list of substandard bridges for the past five years. The DOT began a $300 million project to replace that structure last year, with plans for completion in 2013.
Forsyth and Wake Counties topped the list with four bridges among the top 20 substandard bridges. Guilford County had 3 bridges in the top 20 while Cumberland, Buncombe and Mecklenburg Counties each had 2 bridges at the top of AAA’s list. “Safety remains our top priority,” said State Highway Administrator Terry Gibson. “In a time of limited resources, we are always looking for innovative ways to fund our comprehensive plan for timely bridge maintenance, preservation, rehabilitation and replacement. We continue to work with our partners to use hard data to ensure we are meeting the state’s most critical bridge needs.”
NCDOT took advantage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act by programming approximately $12 million for bridge repairs and about $43 million for replacing 44 bridges in the state last year. This is in addition to the department’s funding of about $180 million Federal Aid dollars in the Transportation Improvement Program for bridge replacements each year. NCDOT estimates it would cost $5 billion to replace all structurally deficient bridges. The 2010-2011 bridge maintenance budget is $70 million statewide. In the past ten years, the department has never received adequate funding for bridge maintenance, repair and replacement. [My emphasis in italics]
I don't dispute the assurances of the DOT that there are no bridges in North Carolina on the verge of imminent collapse. But it is also clear that additional funds are needed to make sure the risks are minimized, and that the maximum number of bridges are properly maintained. A bill that provides jobs for thousands of construction workers and money for infrastructure repair and improvement seems like a pretty good idea to me. Unfortunately, the mere fact that Obama is for it is reason enough for Limbaugh to oppose it.

On a personal note, a friend of mine may have a gold-top Epiphone to sell me, not as beautiful as my old '93 Les Paul, but it's cheap, and as Mrs. Wookie says, "..careers are fluid now..".
One more time, F Obama.

NC has one of the highest gas taxes in the southeast that is supposed to pay for roads and bridges. Guess where most of it goes. To the pet projects of democraps who have controlled the state for most of the last 100 years, or it gets siphoned off for some other pet project!
Personally I suspect that a lot of the money goes to pay for the gooberners plastic surgery. As someone said recently, one more facelift and she'll look like the Joker (with that smile ear to ear). Two more facelifts and she'll look like The Joker with a goatee!
FYI, Rush moved to FL from NY because he saves enough in taxes he doesn't have to pay NY or NYC, to pay for his Palm Beach house. Same reason I moved many years ago.
You, of course, live in TN which has no state tax, either, but I'm sure that being the good liberal you are, you send in a gift to the state treasury every year just to make sure you're paying your 'fair share."
How the hell do you stay up so late thinking about this Shiite? Your really need to get a life, Jer.
Alright, Jer.

Let's just say Rush OVER-SUGGESTED what Obama actually said. ;)
That being said, "Why would we wait to act until another bridge falls?" sounds like scaremongering to me. No, it's not the same as actually saying the bridges were about to fall, but the implication of danger is there.
Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

so I'll amend "bordered on an outright lie" to "over suggested".
Re the implication of danger: It's a fair point, but I think way too much was made of it by Obama's critics. And, besides, bridges HAVE fallen due to structural deterioration.
What do you think about "the smoking gun being a mushroom cloud" as an implication of danger in the pre-Iraqi war talk?
Jer
Well, Jer...
Submitted by Phryj1 on Fri, 09/23/2011 - 3:06am.
I'll say the 'mushroom cloud' language was taking it too far. Even based on the intel we had, whatever semblance of a nuclear program Saddam possessed was in it's very early stages and shouldn't have been played up as an imminent threat.
In the long run, it actually hurts the case of anyone trying to defend the Iraq war.

Apples and oranges. Tyrants and religious zealots aren't concrete and structural steel, bridges don't 'plot' against you.

Obama's inability, despite his famed "Let me be clear" BS, to be straight with the voting public; and the desire of his minions, media mavens, and sycophants, to transmute as best they can at every opportunity, his prevarications or deliberate inaccuracies into misunderstandings, 'accidental' misrepresentations, or innocent misstatements.
The phrase "over-suggested", for as asinine as it truly is, fits Obama and his administration quite handily; especially the asinine part.

The thing about the bridges, though...
Submitted by Phryj1 on Fri, 09/23/2011 - 3:15am.
...is that we were already going to spend money to fix them anyway, so it stands to reason there's little to no stimulative benefit. The people repairing or replacing the bridges were going to get those jobs anyway. Same deal with teachers and the education portion of the bill. What we really need is private sector jobs, and the jobs bill doesn't directly create them. It relies on the multiplicative effect, which the first stimulus bill has exposed as unreliable.
This jobs bill is dubious at best. Yes, keeping roads and bridges in good shape is important, but I don't think that can tie in with creating jobs and wealth.

Good grief. Talk about over-reacting and over-writing.
Hey, the idiot can use tax funds to campaign and stand in front of every bridge in America from now till election day -- it merely makes him look childish and small.
The great news for Reps is he just doesn't get it,. And neither do his cultish base.
H/T to his "advisors" and the dopes that came up with his "bridge" strategy.
Next time try to find a structure that actually looks in massive disrepair with closed lanes and restricted traffic.
But even that won't plaster over his banal bloviating.

... The post was about what the RN&O writer wrote, not what Rush said, which was posted as a supplement after the substance had been presented.
You can take the Rush excerpt out of the post and you're still left with the substance, which is that a reporter felt the need to make up a word which doesn't exist and excuse as "deft spin that political speakers use when they spice up a little information to make a big impression" statements made by the President of the United States which were far, far less than truthful.
What about comparing ...
- (as stated by the DOT official) "The key thing is: We don't have any bridges that are about to fall" to
- "Why would we wait to act until another bridge falls?"

It's interesting that Obama, and so many others, mentions that so many bridges and highways in America are seriously "deficient," are structurally degraded, are in danger of "collapse,' but they never seem to mention that the vast majority of those bridges and highways were federal infrastructure projects, which means that the federal government funded , monitored, and certified, the design and construction of all that failing infrastructure. Now, just 40 to 50 years later, when it is abundantly clear that all that federally constructed infrastructure was woefully inadequate from its very inception, they offer a "remedy" of doing it all over again. Yea, let's repeat the same actions that lead to the problem, shall we? Maybe, this time, things will be different, right? Right?

drsam said Obama clearly lied in the remarks Tom quoted. I asked drsam what specific statement he considered to be a lie. Your response is essentially that it doesn't matter because he's lied before. That's like a judge asking the prosecutor to specify the crime the defendant is alleged to have committed, and the prosecutor responding "it doesn't matter judge, the accused is a known criminal."
