Will Arrogant Obama Quote ('It's Math') Get Relayed Widely?

By Tom Blumer | September 19, 2011 | 12:52

Tom Blumer's picture

It will be interesting to see if a quote noted at the end of Jim Kuhnhenn's early Associated Press report about the President Obama's proposed tax increases (saved here for future reference, fair use and discussion purposes) makes the cut in later revisions. I'll bet not, because it sends both the arrogance and ignorance meters well into the red.

This post will look at the first and third paragraphs of the 11:20 a.m. version of the AP dispatch, and then relay the quote (bolds are mine throughout):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓
In a blunt rejoinder to congressional Republicans, President Barack Obama called for $1.5 trillion in new taxes Monday, part of a total 10-year deficit reduction package totaling more than $3 trillion. "We can't just cut our way out of this hole," the president said.

Geez, Barack -- You, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid didn't have any trouble spending your way into "this hole," did you? Without bothering to correct the accounting trickery (discussed here and here for those who are interested), deficits in fiscal 2009 and 2010 amounted to $1.42 trillion and $1.29 trillion, respectively. With one month remaining, the fiscal 2011 deficit is on track to reach $1.3 trillion.

Also "somebody" said in 2009 (HT Doug Powers at Michelle Malkin's place) that "Normally, you don't raise taxes in a recession, which is why we haven't and why we have instead cut taxes." Of course, Kuhnhenn has thus far "forgotten" to pass that nugget on to AP readers.

Obama's recommendation to a joint congressional committee served as a sharp counterpoint to Republican lawmakers, who have insisted that tax increases should play no part in taming the nation's escalating national debt. The new taxes would predominantly hit wealthy Americans, ending their Bush-era tax cuts and limiting their deductions.

Well, at least Kuhnhenn called them "new taxes." But at some point (which should have been about five years ago), you would think that the press would recognize that "the Bush-era tax cuts" occurred in 2003, that we've been operating under essentially the same income-tax system for nine years (2003 through 2011), and that tax increases should simply be called, well, "tax increases."

But speaking of tax increases, Kuhnhenn "somehow" forgot -- but in July, the Wall Street Journal didn't -- that $438 billion in tax increases are already on the books thanks to Obamacare. If the law survives court review and repeal attempts, the economy's producers will face over $1.9 trillion in additional taxes over the next decade.

If the President wants to increase the amount of money Uncle Sam takes in, all he needs to do is unleash the economy. Maximizing fossil-fuel production could bring in as much as $50 billion a year in royalties and related taxes beginning a few years from now. Easing the regulatory burden in the rest of the economy and throwing the arbitrary authoritarianism in the trash could easily lead to at least much in additional annual income and other tax collections within a year, if not sooner.

In any event, the problem isn't the intake, it's the outgo. If fiscal 2011 spending comes in at roughly $3.60 trillion as expected, that will represent a 32% increase over the $2.73 trillion spent in fiscal 2007. What in the world do we have to show for it?

Okay, here's that final-paragraph quote:

Responding to a complaint from Republicans about his proposed tax on the wealthy, Obama added: "This is not class warfare. It's math."

This statement will not be well received, which in my view explains why Kuhnhenn saved it for the end. Even if it survives in future AP dispatches, the guess here is that it probably won't be picked up at very many of the wire service's subscribing outlets, and you won't hear it much if at all in broadcast network news reports. We'll see.

Sum Zero

Submitted by CobraMan on Mon, 09/19/2011 - 1:21pm.

I don't understand Obama's "math." If x amount of dollars added to the economy, in the form of government spending, equals an x amount of increased employment, as he continually claims, then x amount of dollars removed from the economy, in the form of taxes, equals an x amount of reduction in employment. It's a zero sum equation, at best. Yet Obama thinks that this is a positive sum equation? Come on, Obama, you should be able to figure it out. This isn't calculus, after all. It's simple addition and subtraction!

Since the 'wealthy' like Obama and Pelosi (What's she worth, 35 million?) are so adamant about "saving the planet as we know it", perhaps voluntarily foregoing their 'public servant' salaries would be one step in paying down the debt.

Obama is not retreating from it

Submitted by eis271828 on Mon, 09/19/2011 - 2:44pm.

For what it's worth, Obama is not retreating from the quote. He's featured it on his Facebook page:

'Quote of the day: "It isn't class warfare, it's math." —President Obama, announcing a proposed Buffett Rule today to ask millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share of taxes.'

So, if major news outlets and others don't feature it, it doesn't appear to be as a favor to Obama, who is trying to promote it.

Submitted by celator on Mon, 09/19/2011 - 4:04pm.

Well, yea, it's "math", but more specifically, it's the basic, universal, long understood laws of basic economics. That's what continues to elude him. He's been completely brainwashed by his life long mentors. Little wonder, I reckon, that he continues his scam on Facebook.

Obama insists on violating or overcoming these economic laws and we all are paying the price. He lives in a mind set of insurmountable economic ignorance.

It just doesn't through Obama's thick head that what he proposes, economically, will never work, has been proven false and destructive throughout history. Adam Smith must surely be spinning in his grave.

Well, I"m pretty certain that Barack the Destroyer probably had the same grades in math as he did in everything else - crappy!!!
And, even though there is NO evidence in the history of makind that ANY country or government has been able to tax, spend, borrow, print, extort, or regulate itself into prosperity, Boy Barry continues to think that he will be the FIRST to be able to do it!!!

Wait, I take that back.........at least the 'prosperity' part. He's NOT interested in our prosperity - he's just interested in the tax.spend, borrow, print, extort, and regulate end of the statement. He's allready got his 'prosperity', as do most of his buddies, but they are all on the same team...............WE are the enemy and the targets of his attacks.

Submitted by SentryDan on Mon, 09/19/2011 - 3:19pm.

I'm guessin' here but I get the distinct impression that obama wasn't at all good at math. If he lets all his friends (the elite Hollywood types) off the hook for their fair share of his proposed tax increases, then how will he be able to come up the his required $1.5 Trillion over the next decade? obama is dumber that a rock.

Media spin

Submitted by Model850 on Mon, 09/19/2011 - 3:33pm.

I really don't know why the media wouldn't widely play this. With their knack for spinning anything Obama I can see them easily characterizing this quote as Obama's "adult in the room" rebuke of "ignorant" Republicans.

Returning to his roots as a professor President Obama took Congressional Republicans to school today reminding them that his plans for dealing with the country's debt and deficit spending are a matter of simple arithmetic, not class warfare as the Republicans are saying. "This is not class warfare. It's math."

Of course it's BS but don't be surprised to hear the media attempt it.

I dunno about welfare checks,

Submitted by killa37 on Mon, 09/19/2011 - 11:56pm.

I dunno about welfare checks, but you might be surprised to know that unemployment checks are taxed as 'income' to the people receiving them. I know this, because I'm an employer - well, I was, before I moved to Obamaville. I PAY into both the state and federal unemployment systems - but I'm NOT allowed to collect. My unemployed workers can receive the benefits, but they are taxed on it as income.

Pretty nifty, huh??? A tax on a tax!!! Who wouldda thunk???

The "math" says he's going to

Submitted by Hunter12 on Mon, 09/19/2011 - 7:05pm.

The "math" says he's going to squeeze $500 million out of the doctor's and hospitals he's already decided to pay 33% less now and 50% less in the near future. Then he's going to get a trillion by ending the wars. That makes the $1.5 trillion tax increase "paid for". When the doctors say, "Screw you" and the proposed cuts fade away to preserve any chance for medical services and we can't end the war because the terrorists don't back off, Obama will still have the $1.5 trillion to spend on his cronies.

Then when all the lib gimme groups come running, just say "it's not cutting welfare. It's math."

Then maybe try rounding up the illegals and giving them the boot. "It's not attacking immigrants. It's math."

Then slash the federal workforce by a third or so. "It's not attacking public employees. It's math."

An infantile huckster

Submitted by lgeubank on Tue, 09/20/2011 - 12:15am.

Obama can't think of ANY way to reduce deficits, except to increase the government's income from taxes. (Obama: here's a hint: the deficit = income minus expenditures.)

So Obama emits still more of his typically ingratiating, manipulative blarney, as if to say, "It's us decent  folks who have sense, versus the Republicans. It's so simple -- plain math."

Obama's blarney is childishly simple-minded, yet manipulative -- like a grown-up crook trying to talk a child out of his lollipop. He's a Mussolini for Morons.

No Record, No Leadership!

Submitted by billwhit1357 on Tue, 09/20/2011 - 1:36am.

In 2008, people voted for this Idiot and he had no record, no past, only shady dealings with horrible people who he called friends. He made people feel that if they did not vote for the first Black man, then you were Racists. Hussein has been playing the Race card his whole Pathetic life. I was a Democrat in 2008 and did not fall for his Lies and Decete, all he spoke was BS! I voted McCain, second time I voted Republican, the first was for Reagan. Now, Pelosi, Reid, and Hussein have turned the once Honorable Democratic Party into the Den of Demons Looney Tunes, which I refuse to be a part of! As a DisAbled Vet, I have loved each and every President our country has had, even Jimah, who I thought was too good for politics. But Hussein Obama is not to be Respected, he has shown he is an empty suit, not to be trusted out of sight! He further proved his hate for America during the 9/11 ceremonies, he and his ugly Skank were an embarassment! They taught Obama nothing about American Values, Honor, Integrity, or Dignity during his formable school years, in the Islamic lands he lived. America needs to rid herself of this Obama Trash ASAP, he is Bad for America and is a Good Example of what America does not ever need again, and Affirmative Action President!

Submitted by VinceP13 on Tue, 09/20/2011 - 7:51am.

Okay, I'll give him 90% of those who voted for him are idiots. And yet President Obama doesn't believe we understand the difference between the TAX RATE and REVENUE. He can't possibly believe that raising taxes increases revenue. He SAID SO in 2008! So, he believes everyone who matters will just fall for his "it's math" argument. Is it REALLY so hard to understand that TAXES ARE NOT REVENUE??? It's like saying a theater will make more money by raising the ticket price. If you triple the ticket prices you do NOT triple the revenues. You go out of business! It's NOT math! It's economics!

Dispicable.

Submitted by ljacone on Tue, 09/20/2011 - 8:50am.

If I hear "fair share" one more time I am going to scream.

Can you imagine the backlash if President Bush had said "It's math" in such a context? Can you? And yet this brainless stuffed shirt gets a pass after either completely misunderstanding the tax situation in this country (which is inexcusable for someone who was elected President), or outright lied to everyone who heard his voice (which is downright criminal in this position).

You want to know what's worse? Even as the country slips slowly down into Hell, there are large masses of morons who nod their heads in unison, blindly following their False Messiah into the provebial flames. "Oh yeah, fair share, soak the rich, they stole my money, fair share, fair share, fair share!"
