Catholic Priest on World Youth Day: Media Coverage Was 'Just Bizarre' (Update: Video Added)
I didn't go to the Catholic News Agency's web site tonight looking for a media bias column; I usually go there to find "positivity" posts for my home blog. When I clicked on an item with an intriguing title ("The Pope's Young Army"), I expected that the author, Father Robert Barron, would regale me with inspiring vignettes from the Pope's recently completed World Youth Day in Madrid.
Well, at first he did just that. But then Father Barron's fine column took an interesting turn. Check out his reactions to how the international press covered the event, and his remarkably insightful conclusions (bolds are mine; additional paragraph breaks added by me):
Story Continues Below Ad ↓I would like to focus my reflections on a phenomenon that would actually be funny if it weren’t so tragic. I’m talking about the mainstream media’s extraordinary capacity to miss the point.
Every night that I was in Madrid, I would return to my room after an incomparably rich day moving among the throngs of pilgrims and I would watch the news on CNN and the BBC. World Youth Day was, invariably, among the top stories, but the coverage was, not to put too fine a point on it, just bizarre. “Protestors descend on Madrid as the Pope arrives,” the BBC announcer would gravely intone; “The Pope was met today with strong opposition from secularists, gay rights activists, and Spaniards angry over World Youth Day’s cost to taxpayers,” the CNN anchorwoman would say, frowning into the camera.
By the admission of the news reporters themselves, the number of protestors never reached beyond a few thousand, and not one event of World Youth Day was interrupted in the least by their demonstrations. There were, at most, a few scuffles between pilgrims and the protestors.
But judging from the tone of the coverage, the average listener in the UK or the United States would have concluded that the Chicago riots of 1968 had broken out in the streets of Madrid. I actually laughed out loud when I focused in on some video of a “confrontation” between protestors and World Youth Day participants and noticed that at least half of the people in the picture were camera crews and reporters!
A million and a half young Catholics from all over the world come to celebrate their faith and to declare their solidarity with the Pope—and the networks obsess over a handful of protestors! I know that controversy sells papers and pleases sponsors, but anyone who was on the ground for World Youth Day couldn’t help but conclude there was something more at work in the gross discrepancy between reality and reportage.
The dirty little secret is that the actual World Youth Day doesn’t fit the standard secularist narrative, according to which Catholicism is a corrupt, backward-looking, moribund ideology, destined to fade away as science advances and subjectivist moral relativism becomes normative. A small percentage of priests engage in sexually deviant behavior? Blanket coverage. An international army of young people marches through the hot sun and then sits patiently through a rainstorm to see the Pope? Ho-hum. That’s called reporting the news according to a set of fairly rigid ideological assumptions and imperatives.
The Catholic Church—at least in the West—is passing through a dark period, largely of its own making. But has the Catholic Church lost the future? The mainstream media wants you to think so. But any of those who experienced World Youth Day first hand would say, “Don’t you believe it.”
The good priest's take on the establishment press's mindset is well-stated and spot-on. Excellent job, Father Barron.

The Catholic Church is a big (perhaps the biggest) cult, but the media are such a bunch of ravenous wolves they're all but frothing at the mouth.
Wow. That's profound. \sarc

"Cult" - finally someone got it right. NOT!

"First, it becomes clear that "cult", seen in its true breadth and depth, goes beyond the action of the the liturgy. Ultimately, it embraces the ordering of the whole of human life....Man becomes glory for God, puts God...into the light (and that is what worship is), when he lives by looking toward God...." Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, The Spirit of the Liturgy, page 20.
Cult, as in "culture", needs to move away from the popular distortion of its usage to the fullness of its meaning.

I would say Islam is more of a cult.
Islam calls for the killing of non-believers, the Catholic church doesn't.
Islam calls for it's followers to lie, the Catholic church doesn't.
Islam allows for the rape of believers and non-believers alike, the Catholic church doesn't.
Islam allows the subjugation of women, the Catholic church doesn't.
P.S. I am NOT a Catholic.

The media hates what the Church stands for so they are a perpetual target; of course they don't have the intestinal fortitude to attack Islam that way.

I agree completely. Neither the Catholic Church nor Christians will lop off one's head if there is disagreement or dissent. However muslims will lop off heads and do other despicable things to any and everyone who disagrees with their social and legal ideology. Ergo, the LSM debases all religions except islam in an attempt to save their worthless hides. Sad thing is the LSM doesn't realize that it will be one of the first to kneel at the choping block if islam wins in the US.
What is a cult:?

@ DemsRFascists
Go find a reliable definition of cult and then explain how the Catholic Church fits that definition.
As the late great radio and television broadcaster, Archbishop Fulton Sheen said: There is perhaps a handful of people who hate the Catholic Church for what it really is, but millions who do so because of WHAT THEY THINK IT IS!!. I suspect that the poster is one of the latter.
That's a great quote from

Secularists are afraid of the Catholic Church
Submitted by ohio granny on Fri, 08/26/2011 - 9:52am.
Secularists are afraid of the Catholic Church for different reasons then they are afraid of Muslims. They are intolerant of Catholics because they will pray for you instead of killing you if you disagree with them. Catholics will not kill you or put a bounty on your head if you make fun of or create a cartoon character of the Pope. Muslims will if they even preceive of such a thing regarding Mohammed.. Catholics do not threaten you and your family if you leave the faith. Muslims do.
Secularists are hypocrites. They do not like to held accountable for their actions and behavior. They are hypocrtes because they cave to the threats of Muslims and never hold them accountable for their actions and behavior.

More to the point: Secularists hate the Catholic Church because her teachings will not, cannot, change. Our theological beliefs regarding contraception, marriage, abortion, homosexuality, etc. are absolutely written in stone. Secularists are more afraid of our culture (what is really now counter-cultural) than anything else.

The world whether it is the MSM or Hollywood etc are anti-Catholic, anti-protestant and even anti-Semitic/Israel is a spiritual matter. They are controlled/influenced by Satan, thus they hate anything to do with God. Jesus said we should not be surprised if they hate us, because they hated Him first.

I am Catholic convert from being a non-believer. There is no human between me and Jesus Christ. Mary gave birth to Jesus, did she not? Therefore Mary is the Mother of God and we reverence her accordingly. But she does not stand between me and my Heavenly Father.
I invite you to attend a Catholic Mass and see for yourself, rather than rely on hearsay and misconceptions. If you do not want to learn the Truth of the Catholic faith then please do not make uneducated comments concerning it. God Bless.
Been there, done that.

I have been to many, many Catholic masses and can say with knowledge and experience that mass isn't a teaching/learning experience. But, I really liked the ceremony.
In my comment I really wasn't thinking of Mary. I actually had the Pope in mind. Mary hasn't been "human" for a couple thousand years, give or take. The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church and as such is the human between you and Jesus.
We believe in the Bible alone and are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Nothing in the Bible says to pray to Jesus's mother and I must admit, I find that particular aspect of Catholicism particularly disconcerting.
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
John 14:6
I'm not saying anything "against" Catholics, just pointing out what the Bible says. I'm very glad you have found a faith that fits your spiritual needs. So have I.
What is it with the media?
Submitted by almostacowboy on Fri, 08/26/2011 - 11:16am.
Is it that they just can't help themselves? Did they all torture small animals and smaller children when they were growing up, or were they the ones bullied? And now, whether a legitimate opportunity exists or they have to invent an opportunity they intentionally misrepresent (read "lie about) anything Godly taking place in the world.
How terrible it must be to live your life in fear of the greatest "good" that has ever existed in the history of mankind - the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Are they afraid of admitting they are wrong (that God does exist) and maybe they would have to give up their "worldly" (carnal) lifestyle? Are they afraid of not being "hip" or being ridiculed by their peers? Or are they afraid of having to take a stand, to make a moral judgement, and honestly say this is right and that is wrong?
The worst part is that, given that only 20% of the population describes themselves as "liberal" and seemingly 90% of the media, the other 80% are constantly subjected to their non-mainstream views. Then, they declare that anyone not in lockstep with their platform must either be a "hater" or be silenced or both.
Prince of peace
Submitted by GerryC on Sat, 08/27/2011 - 11:10pm.
Jesus asked us all to follow him to peace and love, and guide others to believe the same. He told us only his father, The Lord, will make that judgement when he takes our souls back to where we he sent us from. (Just a thought... Did you fear coming into this world? Why should you fear going back to where you came from?)
Islam tells their followers to leave it to men to kill anyone that does not believe as they do, and send them to hell. And they repeatedly have demonstrated this in word and action.
We can only hope that The Lord prevails. I will only give my soul back to The Lord, not men.
