Science-Challenged AP: Northeast 'Temps Near (and Above!) Boiling Point'
You can't make this up.
You might excuse the Associated Press for engaging in a bit of hyperbole in a Friday item headlined "Northeast braces for temps near boiling point." After all, it has been miserably hot in many parts of the country, including here in Greater Cincinnati.
But, as readers will see after the jump, the unbylined AP item's writer clearly doesn't understand the point at which water boils. Brace yourself (light-blue "highlighting" is mine; HT to an NB tipster):

Somehow, this over 100 degrees erroneous item has survived without removal or correction for three days.
No wonder the press is so frightened of the bogus scare known as global warming (or, a I prefer to refer to it, "globaloney"). They're afraid that if the temps go up just a couple of degrees, all the water on the earth will take flight into the atmosphere.
The self-described "Essential Global News Network" is in the best of hands. (/sarc).

Someone who is use to Celsius sees 100 and it did not click that it was in Fahrenheit as 100 C is boiling point. And a memo to blame AGW every time one reports the weather why not hype and not do a fact check to see that is was not Celsius. That what happens when you have an agenda to push and not just a job to report facts

Well, 98 IS close to 100, you know!
The fact that the first is Farenheit and the other is the boiling point in Celsius is irrelevant.
The “Celsius” thing!

I understand the confusion - and agree a simple check as to which measurement standard was used was definitely in order…
BUT (sarcasm follows) the plain fact is the Euro-commie weenies who have sought to undermine our basic system of government, national identity, and moral principles have gone too far when they attack and deliberately misuse our beloved Fahrenheit System.
These same anarchists who demand absolute obedience to the “Metric System” and have tried to replace the “Before Christ (B.C.) / Anno Domini (A.D.) with “Before Common Era” BCE / “After Common Era” (ACE), must be stopped!
What’s next for these minions of Satan? A full scale attack on the “Dewey Decimal System????” Have they no shame?
I, for one, will never again buy a car with a speedometer calculated in kilometers per hour!!! - Take that all you Twisted, Freak-a-zoid, Pinko, Anti-American slime!!!! (end sarcasm)

Now how in the hell(and I mean hot as hell) did we ever survive the other times that we've had temperatures of 100 degrees for several days many many years past? I remember one day at the end of August where we had reached 112 degrees. Not the heat index, the actual temperature was 112 degrees Fahrenheit at 4pm before things started to cool down from there.
This was in South Central Texas.
It gets that hot on a regular basis in the summer time in Vegas and Phoenix!

I've been to Vegas three times, twice in the summertime, once in the fall. It was quite pleasant but warm in the fall of 2004 when I was there last. First time in 1997, 110 was average high, didn't drink enough water, broke out in nose bleeds. Learned my lesson there!
And I've heard that if there were some rain storms, they hit hard and fast enough to cause a little flash flooding. Haven't seen it myself though except when it got reported on the weather channel.

We moved here in '93. That first summer was a shock - going outside was like walking into an oven going full blast. Then the flash flooding - because it rarely rains, the ground can't absorb it fast enough, and we'd end up with water rescues because people would get caught in the Charleston underpass.
They fixed it:
http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2001/oct/23/charleston-underpass-floodin...
Back in the 90's, I was a few blocks away, stuck at the VA until dark and it had already begun raining. I knew better than to brave the underpass so I turned off Charleston and got hopelessly lost until I finally made it to the strip and got my bearings. Terrifying!!!

Have the same thing happen here in San Antonio.
Submitted by drsamherman on Mon, 07/25/2011 - 9:07pm.
We get a heavy rainstorm that blows through and floods the streets. You always have the idiots who believe they can plow through four feet of water in some low-clearance vehicle and they end up requiring rescue. The little burg we live in outside of the San Antonio city limits has an ordinance on the books requiring rescued people to pay for the cost of the services. The moaning and gnashing of teeth was bad enough, but then the mayor's daughter decided her Honda Civic could make it through about a yard of water and she ended up crying on the hood of her car. The mayor suddenly became convinced the ordinance was a bad idea. The city council disagreed with him and he paid the costs after pitching a fit. At the next election, he was quickly promoted to "mayor emeritus".
Nice!

I lived in the Mohave valley in the late 80s. We'd go to Vegas every so often, and one time during a tremendous storm, we encountered the underpass standstill. Over 6 feet deep it was. We ended up going by way of nearly-flooded Rodeo (I think that's what it was called) out to Meadows Mall.
It's Vegas, so I guess they gambled against the impact of the rain.

I forget the clearance 15' or 18' maybe? But one year the flooding hit it - that year parts of Boulder were washed away too.
When I was stationed in Portsmouth Va. I had to drive through tunnels {hated it!} so the underpass was really nothing, but I'd avoid it all the same!

The use of that phrase here is asinine. I understand it to be "just an expression," but not when they specifically say "near and above." They are referring to the actual boiling point temperature. No one says, "Man, I'm at or above freezing out here!" Ok, if they're referring to the 100 Celcius boiling point, they why state the temperatures in Fahrenheit? If you state in Celcius, they're about 40, right? Still no where near some kind of "boiling point." Are they trying to be witty like "boiling point" referring to someone's temper? It's just stupid.

The writer of the Absolutely Pathetic article was obviously taking into account the Heat Index, urban heat island effect, SPF for the UV index and ozone conditions, wind speed, altitude, proximity to carbon expelling methane-producing cows, usage of planet killing incandescent light bulbs in the vicinity, solar flares, a butterfly's wings flapping in China, and, critically, use of a weather station located next to the vent of steel mill blast furnace.

Priceless!
As far as the C vrs F statements. I'm sorry, it would take an absolute moron to think that temperatures on earth, today, could ever get near (or above) the boiling point of water. Someone asked to be called when a temperature of 200F was recorded, I settle for 140F. (hottest temp ever recorded was 136F) That's not counting geothermal temperatures of course.
The original story is now four days old, any sign of a correction?

The AP writer may have accidentally stumbled onto science......
Submitted by big.league.slider on Tue, 07/26/2011 - 1:55am.
This dolt from the AP may have some science to back up his claims, whether he knows it or not. While the actual liquid that the writer was comparing the boiling point of was not specified, even if it was water, it could actually boil at 100degF if the vapor pressure were low enough. Ironically, it's these scientifically -challenged leftists that see themselves as being intellectually superior to what they perceive as the typical slack-jawed, hayseed conservative.
As Reagan once said, "Well, the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant, but that they know so much that isn’t so." Reagan was far too kind in his assessment of liberals.
