NYT Home Page Pic Caption: 'Little Question ... Obama's presidency had forever been changed.'
Not waiting for history to play out, a New Times caption writer, below a picture of celebrants of Obama Bin Laden's demise outside the White House, has written: "As crowds gathered outside the White House, there was little question that Mr. Obama's presidency had forever been changed."
The pic and caption follow the jump.

The picture is the ninth in a series of 20 currently at the Times's home page.
Interesting.
There may be something to what the Times caption writer asserts if President Obama acknowledges the role information apparently obtained from Guantanamo Bay detainees played in finding Bin Laden, as noted by Bill Dedman (HT Michelle Malkin; bold is mine):
It started with a courier's name.
Senior White House officials said Monday that the trail that led to Osama bin Laden began before 9/11, before the terror attacks that brought bin Laden to prominence. The trail warmed up last fall, when U.S. intelligence discovered an elaborate compound in Pakistan.
"From the time that we first recognized bin Laden as a threat, the U.S. gathered information on people in bin Laden's circle, including his personal couriers," a senior official in the Obama administration said in a background briefing from the White House.
After the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, "detainees gave us information on couriers. One courier in particular had our constant attention. Detainees gave us his nom de guerre, his pseudonym, and also identified this man as one of the few couriers trusted by bin Laden."
In 2007, the U.S. learned the man's name.
In 2009, "we identified areas in Pakistan where the courier and his brother operated. They were very careful, reinforcing belief we were on the right track."
In August 2010, "we found their home in Abbottabad," not in a cave, not right along the Afghanistan border, but in an affluent suburb less than 40 miles from the capital.
"Detainees," eh? Gosh, I wonder where they were detained?
Sure, if President Obama uses the occasion of Osama Bin Laden's death to acknowledge that he has been wrong about Gitmo all along, and that having the mantle of responsibility for America's security altered his view of things, it could "change his presidency forever." But it hasn't happened yet, and it is far from certain that it will happen. Thus, there seems to be no basis for the Old Gray Lady's pic caption writer to be engaging in premature e-celebration.
UPDATE: A morning Times report by Jeff Zeleny appears to have inspired the pic caption:
But as Mr. Obama delivered his remarks and the crowds continued to gather outside the White House, there was little question that his presidency had forever been changed by snaring Bin Laden. The search for him has played out over Mr. Obama’s maturation as a national political figure in the last decade.

I find it sickening that Obama forced our troops to give Osama a 'decent muslim' burial. He should have been fed to pigs.

Yes I did not like that either. This was 100% due to this regimes PC goal. If Muslims truly believe they will be turned away if they are defiled, why not do it as a deterrent? I don't like the sound of it, but if it saves lives, this certainly seems totally harmless in reality vs. having to track down & kill more terrorists. They would think twice before signing up as a terrorist if they knew it was our policy to do such.

Kudos to the US Military, and particularly the Navy Seal team that took him out. However the cynic in me sees this as a transparent attempt by the Whitehouse and the Lamestream media to remake Obama as some sort of war president at a time his poll numbers are tanking. I watched the coverage by the liberal cable networks of the people rallying outside of the Whitehouse waving American flags, which is now apparently OK in the eyes of the media. This is far different than the disdain they show towards the Tea Party when they wave flags. They also noted the number of college students who were there celebrating this successful military action. Were these the same students who were out protesting against the war during the Bush administration? So I guess it is now okay to be patriotic as long as it is in support of Dear Leader. Look for all of the liberal talking heads to treat Obama as if he is the greatest war president since Eisenhower. My airsick bag is at the ready
Yes did they organize that
Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 11:36am.
Yes did they organize that via FaceBook? They did appear to be very young, where Obama has like a 60% approval rating. They are so distressed at Obama's failures, they went totally nuts on this opportunity to celebrate SOMETHING Obama. Even if they protested the war under Bush. I think there is sound psychological grounds for this happening to strong Obama supporters & the KA media.

I'm not getting the sense that the demos are pro-Obama
Submitted by Tom Blumer on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 11:55am.
To be clear, I don't think they're anti-Obama.
They're pro-"Thank God Osama is dead."
The young people who are demonstrating were children and adolescents when the 9/11 attacks happened. They got to watch death and destruction in real time. Many of the Seals who carried out the mission yesterday may have been in junior high or high school on Sept. 11, 2001. I think there is a legitimate sense of exhilaration that he has been taken out, and pride in our military that they did it.

The answer is by no means clear, ******mo.
At best, he was following through on a policy from a previous administration, and allowed the troops to do their job. That is a good decision, but a presidency-changer? C'mon. Like I said in the post, if it changes how he does things from here on out, maybe. I don't rate the chances of that as being good.
That in no way compares to the difficulty of responding appropriately to the 9/11 attacks with a military that I must remind you was significantly degraded as a result of Clintonian "peace dividend" budget cuts, and was hampered by things like the Gorelick wall.
At best? You are so blind.

You are the one viewing through the ideological lens. I can't stand Obama or his policies but even I can recognize he had a direct hand in this and deserves credit and that yes, this does change his presidency. You are behaving like a child in denial. How about congratulating the man or is that beneath you?.

I wrote on my blog last night immediately after the President's speech:
President Obama gave a very fine speech, and deserves props for its content and delivery.
And of course he deserves props for approving the mission's completion.
That doesn't make it a presidency-changer yet (emphasis yet), and that is not arguable.
The Times arguing that it did probably 5 hours after the speech is shameless, ideo-illogically driven cheerleading.

How could I owe you an apology when it wasn't until after my post that you gave him "props for approving the completion of the mission"? So where was the assumption? Of course, the guy who curses at a poster and makes fun of one's handle is demanding an unconditional apology. Too rich.

Let's go through this slowly:
- I give him props for his speech's "content" and "delivery."
- The fact that he approved the mission was part of the speech's "content."
- Therefore I gave him props for approving the mission LAST NIGHT in the post.
It that simple enough, or do you need crayons?
I am still waiting for the unconditional apology, because you didn't know what you were talking about and made a false assumption about what I think when you ignorantly wrote: "How about congratulating the man or is that beneath you?"
As shown, I did.
So whether or not you unconditionally apologize is now a fundamental test of your integrity.

Now that is some convoluted logic. Approving the mission = content of speech. You can't even congratulate the president on a historic day for a historic achievement. Pathetic. No, not for the success of the mission, but for sitting back, hands-off, and allowing it to happen.

Unless al Qaeda has no power left at all I don't see how they will or politically can let the death of bin Laden go unanswered. My feeling is that the clock is ticking on something dramatic.

MidAmerica, it seems they do have very little ability left. I thought something would happen at the Royal Wedding. Nothing happened. I was surprised by the good news.
I am very concerned about the "lost' nukes. Even a suitcase nuke is a huge problem. I hope they are on top of that one. That issue not good IMO. I hope they have been told IF ONE GOES OFF, Iran or some other goof ball sponsoring state is going to be gone. The truly wonderful people of the great nation of Iran need to rise up and put down these Islamo--fascist "leaders." There was a GREAT cost to the Germans for putting up with Hitler. Many fought against him internally, but it seems too many went along (as many non-Jewish killed as Jewish by Hitler fyi).

Obama's Presidency must be the primary focus of Bin Laden's death..right? No.. I didn't think so either. The NYT does have the major responsibility of re-electing Obama, so I would expect nothing less than their analysis of how everyting effects how people view Obama, especially something like the killing of Bin Laden. -bidn-

Submitted by stratman on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 4:48pm.
Taking out bin Laden is fantastic. Internationally, it is a moment to recognize, but it will not stop Al Queda or other terrorists.
Bin Laden's death changes nothing concerning the domestic toilet Obama engineered and continues to nurture. This will be the most important issue in Obama's reelection hopes, barring a new international crisis (Iran or the newly "democratic" countries attacking Israel, for instance).
The MSM will ride OBL's death forever, but enough American's will recognize the crapfest jackpot Obama and his flunkies have gotten us into if economic conditions don't improve significantly and vote Obama out.
