A Free Pro-Union, Pro-Democrat Political Announcement, Courtesy of the AP's Scott Bauer
The instinct here is that an Associated Press "story" by Scott Bauer in Madison, Wisconsin, will get lots of radio and TV time tomorrow.
That would be a reasonable expectation, because what Bauer writes isn't really a "story" as much as it is a free political announcement. I'm predicting that the establishment press will love it, especially the opening paragraph:
Wis. defeat could help launch counterattack on GOP
With the labor movement suffering an epic defeat in Wisconsin and perhaps other states, union leaders plan to use the setback to fire up their members nationwide and mount a major counterattack against Republicans at the ballot box in 2012.
Gosh, about the only thing Bauer's lacking is a bullhorn.
Here are other choice, union activism-promoting excerpts, followed by the resurrection of an objectively incorrect term (in bold):
But labor leaders say the events in Wisconsin have helped galvanize support for unions across the country. They hope to use the momentum to help fight off other attacks and grow their membership.
Said the president of the AFL-CIO: "I guess I ought to say thank you particularly to Scott Walker. We should have invited him here today to receive the Mobilizer of the Year award from us!"
... The passage drew shouts of "shame, shame, shame" from protesters in the gallery and came only a day after dramatic action in the Republican-controlled Senate, which used a legislative maneuver Wednesday to quickly adopt the bill without any of the 14 Democrats who fled to Illinois three weeks ago.
Democrats said their counterattack efforts were already beginning to bear fruit in the form of donations: The party's Wisconsin chapter said it raised $300,000 overnight and has collected $800,000 from 32,000 donors in just five days.
Party chairman Mike Tate said Senate Democrats have raised $750,000 over the past month alone.
Republicans said they were simply doing what voters wanted.
... Walker had repeatedly argued that ending collective bargaining would give local governments the flexibility they needed to confront the cuts in state aid necessary to fix Wisconsin's deficit, which is projected to grow to $3.6 billion deficit over several years.
Lord have mercy.
Three weeks ago, Bauer himself wrote, in a piece which also claimed that the Wisconsin law involved "eliminating collective bargaining":
Unions still could represent workers, but could not seek pay increases above those pegged to the Consumer Price Index unless approved by a public referendum. Unions also could not force employees to pay dues and would have to hold annual votes to stay organized.
Once again, Scott, if "Unions still could represent workers," then some degree of collective bargaining still exists. You can't write that the legislation is "ending collective bargaining" above (while "cleverly" stuffing words into Scott Walker's mouth that he more than likely never said; if he did say them, why aren't the words in quote marks?), or three weeks ago that it is "eliminating collective-bargaining rights" and still be telling the truth. Period.
Also, Scott, if you're going to write about people who are "galvanized" by what has happened in Madison during the past three weeks, you might go out and interview some of the people who are upset that:
- GOP State Senators have received ugly death threats such as this one (HT NB's Lachlan Markay), threatening not only them but also their families (other examples here).
- The atmosphere in the Capitol area was so hostile last night that GOP lawmakers had to leave under police escort and endured people who "were literally trying to break the windows of the cars we were in as we were driving away."
- As the Badger 14 blog notes (HT Ann Althouse), "Democrat staff engineered mob’s unlawful invasion of Wisconsin Capitol Building" today.
They shouldn't be too hard to find -- but they would interrupt your free public-sector union political announcement.

This sort of recalcitrant
Submitted by Miss_Me_Yet on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 10:33pm.
This sort of recalcitrant behavior is typical of today's dysfunctional liberal in this country.
The thing about liberals, no matter their gender, birth place, education level, current age, etc., they all suffer the same mental defect from birth it would seem.
Every one of them only has the emotional development of a 10 year old child, seriously it's true.
We conservatives, to often mistakenly attempt to speak or reason with them as an equal, an adult, to only wind up frustrated for the effort, always wasting our time.
Instead we need to treat them like the errant, disrespectful, little children they cannot help that they are, even giving them a time out when needed.
It is the only thing they understand due to their defect, and in a strange way appreciate and respect our role as the adult, to their inner child.
Liberals ... we can't live with them, they couldn't survive without us ...
True Colors

The left is imploding over this, and "journalists" like Bauer show their true colors. Always nice to see.what part of no do they not understand?

The unions have boxed themselves into a corner. They have no way of winning. The states do not have the money to pay the negotiated retirements and healthcare benefits. Even if democrats take back political control there is still not enough money. Not A Word...

Not a word about the hateful signs, profanity, or destruction of property. Nope just about destroying democracy. Worse yet, Jesse Jack Ass in front of the cameras decrying Walker as waging war against the poor. The actions of these goons proveonce and for all that they are loww down Communists. Lets ship them to China and Cuba!"Old Soldiers never die, they just fade away"!
How is it a war agaisnt the poor?

See here is another sign of the Democrats changing what they say to just rile up their base. For the last three weeks this has been all about the working man, the middle class, the little guy. And now Jesse Jackson equates these people to poverty. So which one is it? They are either poor or they are the middle class working man, they can't be both. And Jesse, these people are far from poor. I mean if they can find the time to not work and protest everyday, they obviously have more money than I do. I make a good living and I can't afford to take off and protest for weeks on end. Once again the hypocrisy of the left is rampant. And why do these libs seem to ignore that pretty much everybody else (but the public sector union employeesa and uber libs) seems to be on the side of the Governor Walker? Even people that I know are liberal (my wife) think Walker is doing the right thing. Dogs always fight the fiercest right before they are about to die.Who does this guy think he's fooling?

The union members are ALREADY going to vote democrat! Maybe he's talking about firing up their dead members?
They really live in Bizarro World.

You gotta love liberal journalists. In their interpretation, every Democrat victory is a victory, and every Democrat defeat means they'll come back stronger than ever.
At the same time, every Republican victory is actually a defeat, and will result in a backlash against them.
Such uncivil language
Submitted by rgr11 on Thu, 03/10/2011 - 11:12pm.
2 months ago, the media was abuzz over their concern over words like "crosshairs", attributing all things uncivil to Sarah Palin and the tea party. Now, such terms as "mounting a counterattack" are OK? Micheal Moore threatening to kidnap bankers? Death threats to Republican senators in Wisconson? What if Sarah had talked about "counterattacking" Obama's policies? How long would it take the press to jump on the" uncivil, warlike rhetoric"? I love newsbusters, but it makes me sick sometimes to see the double standard in all it's glory.Amen! The double standard is sickening!

And offensive! Also, didnt the Dems in Congress use budget reconciliation to pass Owebamacare by avoiding a Senate filibuster? Oddly ;o0, the libs and unions werent outraged when Dems used legislative tricks to pass healthcare. I bet the AP wasnt sad then, either.......................LOL.....the funny thing is, only 11-12% of ther labor force

are union.....that means that 88-89% could give a shit less....like you said, the union members already vote demo-commie.....where is this supposed ground swell of support coming from.....the taxpayers are tired of them living on the tit....I think it's the greatest thing that has happened to labor in this country in a long time.....right to work should be the law of the land....every where....even FDR knew that public service employees should not have the right to collective bargaining because of the obvious conflict of interest.....wasn't he a staid Republican?.....oh yeah, that's right.....he was a democrat.....Dem death threats..

Walker needs to press home this advantage while the libtards are still stumbling around, arrest the democrats in hiding and penalize the teachers who called in sick. The Unions Attacked Taxpayers First
Submitted by Boil It Down on Fri, 03/11/2011 - 3:17am.
The slow, insidious subterfuge used by the unions to bilk the taxpayers was the first, longest and most destructive attack. The big lie is that the GOP fired the first volley. I don't know how Bauer is being rewarded by the unions for his aid, but he's definitely in the camp of those who call us the enemy. The AP has made no secret of their disdain, and opposition to the taxpayers, especially of late. The war chests are being filled and I'm sure AP and Bauer are getting their combat pay.Union money???
Submitted by Red Bill on Fri, 03/11/2011 - 9:25am.
Has anyone connected the dots backward from the hundreds of millions of dollars the unions give to the democrtic party to the collectively bargained wages electeced democrates negotiate in behalf of the tax payers? If there is that much slush in the system of wage and benefits that allow hundreds of millions of dollars to be spent on elections...that door needs to be opened wider and looked at a little more carefully. So indirectly that is taxpayer money, a collection of the dues paid by public workers as part of their compensation package negotiated with elected officials...sounds like a conflict of interest. And somebody please explain to me how less then 10 percent of the population represents all of 'middle class' America. I can understand their being upset with the flow of gravy being curtailed, but come on...what about the rest, majority, of us middle class workers that may actuall get to keep a little more of the money we earn in the future because we don't have to pay gfor their gravy.active cheese

Being in the middle of the Walker/Union fray has been very interesting - we Wisconsin conservatives have been kicked around since Tommy Thompson left office and Scott has given us a chance to hope again... The media narrative - that Rebublicans could be in jeapordy - is not what I'm getting from my friends and neighbors. Our thinking is that "outside" interference in the recall process will backfire. We prefer to fight our own battles and have had to watch for years as outside DNC money and outsiders have flocked to our state to insure that the Feingold and Baldwin types have maintained their seats (sorry Russ). The more outside influence that comes in, the more energized the conservatives will become. One issue that is getting no media play but I find interesting concerns retirements - it seems that a whole bunch of unionized public servants are pulling the plug and handing in their retirement papers early so as not to put their sweet deals at risk. For them, that's a good personal business move but it's just one more expense that the taxpayers have to pay. Lastly, can someone please pass along to the President that he should take care of the mess in Washington and butt out of Wisconsin. Thanks. Many media members are unionized

One aspect of this whole story that people seem to be forgetting is that a lot of print and broadcast journalists - especially in larger markets and at the network level - work in union shops. I'm a TV reporter in a medium-sized market. We're not unionized. However, I have many friends who work in larger markets where the stations are unionized. Behind the scenes, many of these union media members are talking about defending their "brothers and sisters" in Wisconsin. It's blatantly apparent in their coverage, is it not?AP-solutely ...
