Overnight Engine-Starter: Guess the Estimated Damage to Wisconsin's State Capitol
I heard this on Mark Levin's show earlier this evening. He was referring to a Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel blog post by the paper's Don Walker.
The question is: What is the State of Wisconsin's estimate of the amount of damage done to the Wisconsin State Capitol after roughly two weeks of non-stop protests?
The answer, and a link to the JSonline.com story, are after the jump -- No fair Googling or otherwise searching for the answer:
Here it is (bold is mine):
State says damage to marble at Capitol could hit $7.5 million
State officials said Thursday that damage to the marble inside and out the State Capitol would cost an estimated $7.5 million.
Cari Anne Renlund, chief legal counsel for the state Department of Administration, said in Dane County court that estimates of damage to marble includes $6 million to repair damaged marble inside the Capitol, $1 million for damage outside and $500,000 for costs to supervise the damage.
Much of the damage apparently has come from tape used to put up signs and placards at the Capitol.
It was not immediately clear how the estimates were made, though the state is apparently relying on opinions by historical architects, one of whom works for the U.S. Park Service.
One concern is the residue from tape that the state says is causing damage to stone and other surfaces inside the Capitol.
I share the skepticism of some JSonline.com readers about the extent of the damage, but even if it's a small fraction of $7.5 million, it would be a lot.
Gosh, if the estimate is accurate, at $100,000 in pay and benefits, that's enough to pay 75 teachers in Milwaukee's public schools at their current rate for a year.
No one will be surprised that I haven't seen much evidence of the establishment press picking up this story.

Just wait until a building is destroyed in a union riot. How much would it cost to rebuild it from the ground up and repair the fire damage. And this will happen in 20+ state houses.
There is no end game in sight. The only end game is one in which history itself has to start over. The end game will make the civil war look like a bar fist fight.

puzzling
Submitted by jon_torlin on Fri, 03/04/2011 - 1:36am.
I kinda find it puzzling that tape somehow caused the damage to marble, I didn't realize marble was all that delicate. What I can believe is that the protestors, the hippies, the sleepers, etc, if they had caused damage like scratches, chips and cracks, then they need to be made to pay for it, especially when they were asked to leave so that the capitol can be attended to.
And if they were afraid of being locked out, who the hell cares? They've said their piece, the governor isn't changing his mind, go back to whatever state you came from because you sure weren't from Wisconsin.
These are the kinds of protestors that would go to the dems' rallies or whatever like during the Chairman's "inaugeration" (I put it in quotes because it really doesn't deserve the name given how disgraceful it was), there was a crap load of crap left behind. Compare that to the TEA party events, who clean up after themselves.
Repairing marble is an expensive process, sometimes it might be so bad you might have to replace the piece. I doubt it would cost as much as the given estimates, but it wouldn't be cheap either. I'd send the bill to the WH and to the organization that he's been part of that sent all those carpet baggers to the protests.
I can't stand hippie/liberal protestors. They always cause the most damage and mess to clean up. And before any lib says "well, we have the right to protest," my response is "you also have the right to be a bunch of slobs and a$$holes, that won't make me like you any more than before and will make you disrespect you."

I don't know about the tape causing damage.
But I do remember leaving a lemon on my friends marble coffee table over night, and it caused a little damage where the juice was. Granted lemons are very acidic, but the chemicals in the tape will eat into just about anything if left on long enough.

Marble is semi-porous and can be stained with acid and other chemicals. The stain has to be ground out, if it's not very deep, and then needs to be repolished. If the stain is deep the block needs to be replaced or left in place stained. Google it. And it isn't cheap because it's a dying trade, not many professionals left.
Typical liberals. The garbage and destruction that they've left behind (again). Not a single thought of unintended consequences, just me, me, me.

I was basically going to say the same thing. My family business is cemetery monument work and though monuments are rarely made of marble anymore, we'd sometimes get requests to clean old ones (or marble statues on not-so-old ones).
The stuff is pretty porous (compared to granite) and tape residue will get into it. The best way to treat it is to wash it with some sort of acid but if the wrong kind is used or if it isn't done properly, that can stain the marble. You could also sandblast (carefully), but then you pretty much have to do the whole thing to make it look even.
Either way it's a pain - which is why we stopped taking those kinds of requests a long time ago.
The stain
Submitted by AGreer on Fri, 03/04/2011 - 4:44am.
Hey hyrdodyn ! Removing the stain is the cheap part. The polishing process is the expensive part. There are numerous and time consuming stages that need to be done. As you've suggested, whole walls might need to be resurfaced, and re-grouted.

Why worry? Remember the union motto "Give us what we demand or we'll ruin or destroy you". Besides the government has a stash of lots of money - just listen to the chairman's blind supporters.

Indeed, hearty is more related to food like a hearty meal(good for the soul) or a hearty handshake (strong and really friendly and enthusiastic).
This reminds me of Gallagher's segment where he talks about the different words that sound the same (homonyms, nothing gay about it) with different meanings or spellings. For example, peace of mind vs a piece of my mind.

So IMHO, most of the blame belongs to whoever is in charge of the facility who didn't put a stop to the taping up of signs on Day One. This could have been easily enforced, as there were cops all over the place at all times.
For example, I wouldn't expect to be allowed to tape signs all over the beloved Margaret Sanger Clinic in NYC, which is another National Historic Landmark.

With all due respect, to be fair you need to quote the stories about "damage to the White House" that came out prior to that report.
It wasn't one or two hundred thousand dollars. And it wasn't damage to the White House itself.
What did The Drudge Report report? Grover Norquist's wild accusations were? Rep. Bob Barr claimed there had been extensive vandalism. That's why he asked the GAO to investigate.
Would you agree the GAO report probably cost more to produce than the damage they found amounted to? Was it worth it? Was Mr. Barr proved to have been correct? I think not.
The newspaper article you cite states:
"The accounting office said similar pranks were reported in prior transitions, including the one from Mr. Bush's father to Mr. Clinton in 1993. ''We were unable to conclude,'' it said, ''whether the 2001 transition was worse than previous ones.'''
I recall Ms. Amy Carter left a mess in the refrigerator because she was mad her dad lost. Was that the right thing to do? No. Should it have been investigated by a government agency? No again.
Was it right for these pranks to have been pulled? No. Was it extensive vandalism - computer and telephone wires cut, etc., etc.? No again.
Who stole that seal? We can't assign blame until the thieves are found.
The fact remains the early reports proved to be huge exaggerations. I suggest the damage to the Wisconsin State House - wrong as it was - will prove to be the same.

As adults they should have comprehended that what they were doing was vandalism, not to George Bush, but to the American public. Public property was destroyed and had to be replaced. Amazing that you find this acceptable. One of Bush's mistakes was to try to move ahead, and not document properly what had happened.

Much of the so-called vandalism was normal wear and tear. Doorknobs were missing because doors had been closed - blocked up by bookcases, etc.
The costs of the keyboards were estimated to be about 2 1/2 times the market. Some, of course, were simply worn out. Perhaps the Bush Administration didn't take bids?
Missing cell phones? That's vandalism?
Bob Barr was a rabid partisan who sued President Clinton. He ordered two investigations that cost an estimated $200,000. Was that taxpayer money well spent? I don't think so.
The right wing nutz foamed at the mouth for months about the horrible damage done - one would have thought the British troops had returned to finish what they'd started during that 1812 dustup.
Here are two excellent, well-documented, detailed sources. Considerably less biased, by the way, than the ones you cited.

Submitted by Miss_Me_Yet on Sat, 03/05/2011 - 7:43am.
Overblown is a very appropriate word to describe Bill Clinton's presidency.
Bottom line is Clinton got away with his deviant behavior throughout his White House years simply because his entire administration condoned what he was doing. In the end it turns out they were all a bunch of immature degenerates themselves, proven by their actions ( vandalizing the peoples house ) upon leaving.
The amount of destruction is really of no consequence here, nor is the wild exagerations, exagerations happen. Just the fact that a group of individuals entrusted with the heart & soul of this country during the Clinton years, were as big a bunch of A_____s as he was and still is today to my way of thinking is both quite shocking and sad.
You on the other hand take the typical liberal tact. Which, in the mind of any rational person, rendered your entire arguement moot. It's all B/S propaganda of a misguided rational to defend the indefensable.
Think about what happened this way. If the Bush administration staff, upon entering their new work place ( which just happen to be the White House ) for the first time heard about gunfire in certain parts of the building. They would start to contact others ( coworkers ) to find out the extent of the damages, etc.
In the heat of the moment ( shock & disbelief ) the buss echoes through the halls from one office to the next. The actual damage is reported back & forth by 10, 20, 100 people until it appears the White House was under seige by a terrorist organization.
In the ensuing chaos some start contacting outside news sources to report what they've heard circulating around the building, plus their own personal experience. The whole thing became sensationalized ( bigger than life ) if you will, due to basic human nature, not some vast right wing conspiracy to get Bill & Hillary Clinton as theorized at the time and I guess by the looks of it, still to this day.
Liberals always seem to want to turn their trademark deviant behavior around on their victims.Sort of in a lame attempt to make themselves the victim instead......never works.
Instead libs could just change their evil ways, then there'd be nothing to talk about in the first place.
Liberals ... we can't live with them, they couldn't survive without us ...

It's highly unlikely the GAO can produce a investigative report for just $1,000 per page. The $200,000 price tag is probably too low for their 200 page report, granting it quoted a 76-page White House report (how much did that cost?) and built on an earlier GAO investigation and response..

Talked to some Clinton Administration people. Researched some replacement costs. And looked through some early expense reports from the White House to see what they bought to replace the damaged items. That's it.

So, without an investigation how would the costs be known in advance? Before investigating would the investigators be able to say the damage will be less than the cost of the investigation? I think not. I also think the cost of the damage was underreported because Bush didn't want to pull an Obama and live in the past. It is however, worth investigating when government property is deliberatly destroyed.
You have yet to prove the cost of the investigation. You can pipe down on that till you link it.
You implied the damage was no big deal with it's comparison to damage done by Amy Carter. Although you gave lip service to it being wrong, you also have called these things "pranks". If someone damaged my personal property in that way I would not consider it a prank. I would consider it criminal.

What to fix a bunch of keyboards missing one letter? Cannabalize one wornout keyboard and you can "fix" all the best.

Use your imagination. Any key will work - there is nothing special and the "W" key.
May I suggest you read the reports if you want to learn what is in them? From your remark about pranks it's obvious you haven't.
The rabid Bob Barr wasn't satisfied with the first GAO investigation and ordered another, hoping the result would fit his pre-conceived results. It didn't - and was a complete waste of money.
Investigations should be ordered with care - not based on politics. If the Bush Administration wanted bygones to be bygones, why did his Attorney General go on and on and on about the alleged and unproven damage?
Once again - I didn't defend the actions. Just as I'm confident you wouldn't defend an administration that stripped the White House of all policy and procedure manuals, forcing the incoming people to start from stratch.
The lies of Mrs. Bachmann and Ms. Malkin are further proof of the conservative pattern of making up claims of huge wads of money wasted - without proof. Of course, shipping pallet loads of shrink wrapped cash to Iraq was doubtless a wise idea. Wasn't it?

Applicants propose to export liquefied natural gas from Alaska for sale and delivery in Yokohama, Japan to
The Tokyo Electric Power Company, Inc., and The Tokyo Gas Company Limited. Applicants agree to sell and buyers agree to purchase the following annual Btu's of liquefied natural gas during a fifteen-year period ending May 31, 1984:
March 1, 1969, to May 31, 1970: 35,295,000,000,000 Btu's,
June 1, 1970, to May 31, 1971, and each of the subsequent thirteen years: 50,570,000,000,000 Btu's.
The agreement contains an option for a five-year renewal.
The application states that the gas will be sold at a rate of 52.0 cents per million Btu's delivered. [*2]
Applicants will construct facilities in the Cook Inlet Basin area, Alaska, for the liquefaction of natural gas, the storage of liquefied natural gas, and the loading of such onto ships for export and delivery to Japan to the aforementioned buyers.

You attempt to respond to a factually correct comment by honing in on a minor – generally irrelevant – detail in a feeble attempt to disprove the statement.
I quoted Sheer “Am I An Idiot?” InSannity’s silly remark about Media Matters for America. InSannity claimed MM4A takes “a word” out of context and thereby distorts the speaker’s meaning. He failed to provide a single example.
Those are facts. That comment is completely true. To be fair to InSannity – an easy thing to do because he’s such a soft target – I quoted his entire statement. I didn’t want to be guilty of what he accused MM4A of doing.
You made a sad attempt to prove me wrong by picking out the first part of InSannity’s statement – that Media Matters for America monitors conservative broadcasts and websites. You claimed, once again, that I lied because that’s what MM4A does. Of course it does. There is no dispute about that.
Your obvious attempt to deflect can’t change the facts. I correctly predicted the early estimates of damage to the Wisconsin government building would be wildly high – political figures contrived to convince a judge. I compared it to the conservative gasbags bloviating about the alleged vandalism to the White House after the Clinton Administration exited.
You focus on the cost of a GAO investigation and report to deflect from the truth. The right wing nutz ranted for months about horrible damage, plundering of Air Force One, etc., etc. And it proved to be sound and fury signifying nothing.
