NYT Print Edition G-20 Headline ('Obama's Economic View Is Rejected') Watered Down Online

By Tom Blumer | November 12, 2010 | 19:08

Tom Blumer's picture

Rush mentioned this when he opened his show today, and it deserves a bit of graphic support.

Today's New York Times print edition has a headline at the top right which reads: "Obama's Economic View Is Rejected on World Stage" (captured here for future reference).

Ouch. But there's also a story about the story, specifically concerning its stinging headline.

The headline's harsh assessment was apparently too much for someone involved with the Times's online operations to handle. After appearing for several hours with the original headline (we know this because the story containing the print edition headline was commented upon just before 10:00 p.m. last night at Lucianne.com, among many other blogs and web sites, before the print edition appeared), the online headline was changed to "Obama’s Trade Strategy Runs Into Stiff Resistance." Zheesh.

Well, at least the story by Sewell Chan, Sheryl Gay Stolberg and David E. Sanger appears not to have changed -- yet. The San Jose Mercury News picked up the first seven paragraphs online with the original headline, and the text matches what the Times currently has.

Here are the first five paragraphs of the story, including the critical fourth paragraph, which logically led to the use of the headline originally employed:

President Obama’s hopes of emerging from his Asia trip with the twin victories of a free trade agreement with South Korea and a unified approach to spurring economic growth around the world ran into resistance on all fronts on Thursday, putting Mr. Obama at odds with his key allies and largest trading partners.

The most concrete trophy expected to emerge from the trip eluded his grasp: a long-delayed free trade agreement with South Korea, first negotiated by the Bush administration and then reopened by Mr. Obama, to have greater protections for American workers.

And as officials frenetically tried to paper over differences among the Group of 20 members with a vaguely worded communiqué to be issued Friday, there was no way to avoid discussion of the fundamental differences of economic strategy. After five largely harmonious meetings in the past two years to deal with the most severe downturn since the Depression, major disputes broke out between Washington and China, Britain, Germany and Brazil.

Each rejected core elements of Mr. Obama’s strategy of stimulating growth before focusing on deficit reduction. Several major nations continued to accuse the Federal Reserve of deliberately devaluing the dollar last week in an effort to put the costs of America’s competitive troubles on trading partners, rather than taking politically tough measures to rein in spending at home.

The result was that Mr. Obama repeatedly found himself on the defensive. He and the South Korean president, Lee Myung-bak, had vowed to complete the trade pact by the time they met here; while Mr. Obama insisted that it would be resolved “in a matter of weeks,” without the pressure of a summit meeting it was unclear how the hurdles on nontariff barriers to American cars and beef would be resolved.

I have a feeling that someone at the Times might be in deep doo-doo with Pinch Sulzberger & Co. Chan, Stolberg, and Sanger might also be squirming a bit.

I know it's been said before...

but this president is setting a new bar for incompetence. Either he is so arrogant as to actually believe his own rhetoric, or he's so under-qualified that he actually doesn't understand the nature of the crisis or the correct path to recovery. In either case, he's doing untold harm to this country now, and for the foreseeable future. We're being laughed at and mocked by the rest of the world. Given the choice, I'd rather be feared -like we were a scant two years ago.

Why is it that whenever democrats get their hands on a recession, they need to extend it to unnatural limits?

Ditto, that, Bob!!

Submitted by motherbelt on Sat, 11/13/2010 - 7:33am.

The sad fact is that the world realizes what Obama's sycophants here in the US don't: that he doesn't know what he is doing.  They see what he's done to the US and said "No thanks, we don't want any of that."

He's even more narcissistic than I thought. He really thought that, just  because he was fawned over and worshipped when he toured Europe before his election, the feeling would be the same now. And that they would bow down and do whatever he asked.

What chutzpah!

Devaluing the dollar

Submitted by Phryj1 on Fri, 11/12/2010 - 7:43pm.

Obama's incompetence and commitment to Keynesian dogma aside, it was the part about intentionally devaluing the dollar that got my attention. By deliberately causing inflation, the fed is causing consumer prices and costs of living to skyrocket. So, the one benefit of free trade that advocates always put forward, lower consumer prices, is completely negated. Once again, I'm going to suggest that we just bite the bullet and let deflation happen. Inducing inflation to both ratchet up a debt driven economy and bolster the dollar's trade usage has done immeasurable damage to the middle class. I think it's time to try something new and break our dependence on debt and inflation.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

We dont have to try something

We dont have to try something new, ifact we should do some old school stuff.  Renew manufacturing and reliance on American goods.  We do that and we dont have to be concerned what the rest of the world does.

Jeez Dan............you're making too much sense!!! And, on top of that, what you say (which I totally agree with), goes in direct opposition to Boy Blunder's view and opinion of the USA and it's place in the rest of the world. And.........as simple as your statement sounds, and as much common sense as it makes.........you know how complicated it will be to return the the fundamentals that made our country so great!!! We've integrated too damn many layers of beauracracy, legelese, useless paperwork, rules, regulations, laws upon laws, unions, dependancy, 'equality', socialism, bla bla bla bla bla.....................you know what I'm talking about!!!  But I'd be all for TRYING!!!

This is one of many reasons why I call the Kenyan imposter 'Boy Blunder'................he is toxic and poison to everything that he touches, and he operates in COMPLETE opposition to anything that has ever made ANY sense and had a successful outcome...........................

I agree.

We need to get back all the manufacturing jobs that were sent overseas. In order to do that, we need to make the U.S. a friendlier environment for manufacturing. A federal right-to-work law and defunding the EPA (Employment Prevention Agency) would be a good start.

Submitted by killa37 on Fri, 11/12/2010 - 11:09pm.

I've had the tedious, boring, and torturous experience lately of catching some of Boy Blunders meaningless, uneducated, useless, and hapless statements from this 'conference'. I've got to believe that the other attendees have GOT to be wondering what the HELL we have done by putting this moron in the position that he is in!!!!!!!

I swear that I was watching him stumble and stammer through some kind of a 'statement/answer'..........and he was speaking as if someone was telling him what to say through a hidden earpiece, or something like that. It was absolute torture, and highly embarrassing to watch, as an American citizen.........

And all I ever heard for 8 years was how much of an idiot Bush was!!!!!!! I defy ANY Obama supporter to tell me who the idiot is NOW!!!!!

watered DOWN????

Submitted by MrShy on Fri, 11/12/2010 - 10:11pm.

How about, watered OUT.

I saw a hardcopy of the NY Slimes in a Starbucks this afternoon and then got online and thought the same thing. It was nowhere to be found.

Oh, but they have plenty of cyber real estate to give us the fluffy, teddybear-ish featured profile on Daisy Khan, an Eloquent Voice for Islam.

And her hilarious quote:

“We Muslims are really fed up of having to be defined by the actions of the extremists..."

Oh gosh, Muslims are "fed up"... Hey, I have an idea, how about you Muslims get so fed up you reach a boiling point and start committing Jihad. Oops, wait, they already have millions of "fed-up'ers" in their ranks.

Imagine for two seconds if Christians were torturing, maiming, suicide-bombing, sending out FedEx bombs on planes, trying to light their crotches on fire, etc., etc., and the Slime Times went and gave us a lovey-dovey profile on a Christian who was "fed up being defined"....

Here's the frightening deal. The religion that is intimidating us is earning some warped people's respect. We need to intimidate them in spades, apparently.

Unreal.

The Left's condescension

Submitted by jaywl on Fri, 11/12/2010 - 10:58pm.

I have felt for a long time Obama is the perfect example of liberal, University trained leftists who genuinely believe this country is about the worst in the history of mankind. They believe the vitriol spewing from websites like Kos and Beast. But, they are the smart ones and know they would sound like, well, idiots if they just preached their beliefs. So, we get Obama and Sottomayer and Holder and Krugman and, well, you get the idea. The rules for these radicals include the misuse of words to confuse and divide. I find it helpful to treat their statements as I treat my serious writing, write and wait. Wait a day, reread it to make sure it really makes sense and is tightly written. We listen to these guys more than read their words, but it helps to understand their intent to read the same after a day or two. They are very good at using language. Or cartoons and then words. The cartoon Garfield insulted me on Veteran's Day and then the author gave a heartfelt apology the next day. Here's a letter I sent the The Free- Lance Star of Fredericksburg, Va., my hometown newspaper!

"Sir, The Veteran's Day cartoon "Garfield"  was offensive, to say the least. Nov.11 is a national day of honor for all those who served in any branch of our armed forces to protect our nation, whether in wartime or peacetime. The cartoon used "National Stupid Day" as an equivalent or substitute for that day and that was an act of hatred. The author, Jim Davis, has apologized, saying his offense was inadvertent. As a old Marine I reject such nonsense. Davis is intelligent, talented, a wordsmith. He knew exactly what he was doing and what analogy would be drawn. Though a wealthy and free American, Davis obviously believes those who served to protect him and his family were the stupid little people the elite of the left disdain. The Free-Lance Star should not have published the cartoon, especially since most of your readers are in some way associated with the military. Even if your answer is that the staff cannot preview every cartoon, I cannot believe that no person at the newspaper saw the strip beforehand and didn't catch the insult so directed at your readers. But, it did run. This newspaper should take other action to show this man he cannot insult your readers and then lamely claim he didn't realize his insolence would injure."

Davis knew beforehand the insult. He knew he could apologize and say it was "inadvertent." The media will accept that and should anyone complain still the reply will be that the complainer is wrong to not accept Davis' heartfelt apologia. Again, even if you hear the sorry ass voice quivering in honest self-flagellation, wait a day. Did this guy have no idea "Stupid Day" on "Veteran's Day" would offend Veterans? Inadvertent? BullCrap!

Great letter, jaywl!

Submitted by motherbelt on Sat, 11/13/2010 - 7:50am.

I will only criticize one thing:   You should have demanded that they cease carrying his strip.

That's the problem with leftists, especially comedians and  guys like Davis who do this for a living.

They spew their venom, then say "I'm sorry IF anyone was offended" (or "It's a fake news show!!") and all is forgiven.  How on earth could Davis claim the offense was "inadvertent" with a straight face???  And how on earth could anyone believe him?

You know damn well if this had been a strip recommending the renaming of "National Coming Out Day" (a really stupid "holiday")  as "National Stupid Day"  Davis would be long-gone.
