NYT Home Page Virtually Ignores Sept. 12 DC Rally, Gives Obama MN Speech Nearly Top Billing

Not that any of this will surprise anyone, but it should go on the record nonetheless. The New York Times's home page as of its 10:15 a.m. update looked like this (click to enlarge in a separate window):

NYThomePage1015on091309

You'll note no mention of the D.C. rally yesterday that drew an estimated 1-2 million people.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

You'll also note a link boxed in red to a Times story about President Obama's speech yesterday in Minnesota. More on that in a bit.

If even the low end of the D.C. rally estimate holds, it would be the largest-ever gathering in Washington not related to a presidential inauguration -- larger than the misnamed Million Man March (October 16, 1995; while others claimed almost a million were there, the National Park Service estimated 400,000), larger than Moratorium Day (November 15, 1969; Wikipedia says it had 500,000; other sources report lower numbers), and larger than the day of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech (August 28, 1963; 250,000).

If the high end of the estimate holds, it would be the largest gathering of any kind in Washington, exceeding the 1.8 million claimed to have attended Barack Obama's presidential inauguration.

Scrolling further down the NYT's home page, one finally finds a mention of the rally at the third screen (click to enlarge in a separate window):

NYThomePage3rdScreen1015on091309

At last, there's a link to Jeff Zeleny's D.C. rally story. Actually, as you'll see from the red boxes, there are actually two links to it.

Then note the blue-boxed item listed first in Politics in between those two red boxes. That link goes to the very same Obama report noted earlier that is linked near the very top of the home page.

If you need to quickly explain to anyone why establishment media is dying, you need look no further than the two pictures just noted.

But if you need a third, here's a picture of the National Edition of the Times's front page today:

NYT091309frontPagePic

There is a picture below the fold, and it goes to Zeleny's story about the rally -- on a distant Section A page.

And when the NYT closes its doors on it's last day, no one will report that, either. That's how marginal the MSM has become. The NYT -- "If it's disagreeable to our agenda, it will not be reported."

Cheering that day on

I'll be cheering that day on. The way the media has become is scarily Orwellian and at the very least disgusting.

Ignore

The NYT, Msnbc, Cnn ect do not realize or care that the people that buy Newspapers and watch the news are the same people that participate in these events and go to town hall meetings. Their continuation of supporting an agenda and not reporting the truth is quickly leading to their demise.

I quit watching Cnn in 1999 when Donna Brazille told the lie many, many times that her sister had been denied the right to vote in Florida. She is still there and is a symbol of Cnns lack of credibility.

Add to that number other rallies across the nation

I attended a 9/12 rally in Naples FL where an estimated 3,000 other people joined in to make their voices heard.  Had it not been raining early on, that number would have been even higher, I believe.  In Ft. Worth, there were 20,000 citizens on Saturday demonstrating in the rain and outside Chicago, 10,000 more citizens met the Tea Party Express last week.

One thing that I noticed standing on the side of the Tamiami Trail yesterday was the huge number of vehicles passing by that honked their horns in support or gave us a thumbs up.  Of course, there were those few that passed by and flipped us the bird.  People passing by also held signs out their windows and waved flags.  I don't think that many people just handily have signs and flags in their cars.

If you haven't seen it, check out this crowd estimator, compliments of Michelle Malkin.

Do you hear us now, Obama?

Get on he Bus!

They will keep ignoring the good works of the movement until the voices get so loud they will NO longer be able to ignore them.  It's interesting that they are ready to throw it all away and succomb to Socialism.

Spiff.. thanks for doing

Spiff.. thanks for doing that. Good visuals.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

Its all about control

Just like FDR controlled the radio waves to get himself reelected, so goes the modern media.  The Leftists do not believe in freedom of expression, it cramps their ambitions.   They simply do not believe in America as our founders envisioned it and fought for it and spent their personal fortunes to ensure its existence.

Its about time the American people start taking back what is ours.  I only wish I could have been in DC to join them.

"...ambition must be made to conteract ambition...It may be a reflection on human nature, that such devices should be necessary to control the abuses of government.  But what is government itself but the greatest of all reflections on human nature?  If men were angels, no government would be necessary."  James Madison (essay no. 51, Federalist Papers)

I wrote to the Ombudsman

Great minds--before I dropped over here as is my custom, I wrote to that Hoyt character at the NYT and suggested he had missed a piece of news...

Ombudsman, czar, don't we have English terms for things anymore? How about Complaint Dept and Unelected Boss?

And isn't the term Czar a sexist term?

There were Czarinas, too.

Yes

Some of our new overseers are czarinas. Good pt!

Y'all FIRED UP... ready to

Y'all FIRED UP... ready to go... fired up.... ready to go.... fired up ready to go.

Did y'all hear that tinpot demagogue ranting and raving yesterday?

The man cannot stop campaigning. From post-racial to most racial in 8 months. From Constitutional Repblic to Banana Republic in 8 months.

Are y'all mad enough to get even yet?

Liberal nutjobs shouting 'racist conspiracy' to anyone criticising Barack Obama are all crazed... RACERS

Re Yesterday

Yep, during the campaign he did all he could to avoid the 'angry black man' image, but yesterday he was ranting. It was almost as bad as the NAACP screed a couple of weeks ago. His true nature is coming out, slowly.

Unfortunatly this rally will

Unfortunatly this rally will more than likely (as we can already see) be swept under the carpet and will not go into the history books as it is deserved to be. The bright side to this however, is that the RESULT of being swept aside and ignored and the actions taken because of said result will most definately go into the history books as a political game changer in this great country.

Swept Under?

They may ''appear'' to ignore the rally but I believe that they are aware that the next ''rally'' will be much larger and with the 21st Century equivalence of pitchforks.

Are you reading this, Organizing For America?  We're getting rid of Pelosi and Reid next year.  Tell your boss we're coming after him in 2012.

More important to make everyone a racist again

Dowd is back on the Wilson as racist chant... http://community.nytimes.com/comments/www.nytimes.com/2009/09/13/opinion/13dowd.html

I have decided not to even bite on this nonsense anymore. The president has proved biracial people can be as evasive as non-biracial people. Everyone should be so proud. Look how far we've come. Now--let's talk policy. Dowd, to quote her hero, is acting stupidly.

That's it if you protest -you're a racist?

This is all they got? Well I have stated before, the Left is bankrupt of any new ideas.....I can't believe the NYT and all the rest of the biased Liberal Media are not smart enough to cut bait. They are going to follow this corrupt D.C. culture straight down the drain.  The Left doesn't appear to have any sense of self preservation what so ever.

Who is really advising the President of the U.S.?

Yeah
who is advising the President? The people he needs to convince were in

Laree..great headline in the blog you referenced: "Obama Flees To Minnesota." Perfect.

Here's a group I think is heavily influencing Obama's insane economic policies and decisions. Lots of stuff here, weeks worth of reading. Look at board of directors, various speeches, position papers. You'll recognize a lot of this in Obama's actions. It's not good.

The bigger question is who

The bigger question is who is running the country. If you saw any of the Precedents "rally" yesterday it is clear he is 100% full on back on the campaign trail. After watching just a few highlights on the news I really would not have been surprised to hear a Dean styled "YEEEEeeeeHHHAAaaa" come out of his mouth. The question really bears asking a) who is running the country while he is out doing his thing, and b) What the hell is he thinking?

a very scary related post !!

I hope this was an accident, a fluke that can be rationally explained. If not, then our news

Google, which has already stooped to co-operating with China in similar
censorship, may be a co-conspirator.

No, this isnt a fluke, its a disgrace

"Television is a freak show" Bernie Goldberg

The news is not being censored.

It's a complete abdication of responsibility  by the media in the this country; no coercion required.

People are getting their

People are getting their news from multiple sources these days and they see this huge movement being ignored willfully by the NYT. They know it's a biased paper. Even if they don't agree with the protesters, the fact of this huge protest nationally IS news. Just like the Viet Nam protests were in '67. The more they ignore it, the more panash and shine the movement will gather. I hope the NYT doesn't change a thing. The Teaparty Movement doesn't need the validation of the NYT or other biased media because the msm are Dinosaurs with their feet in the tarpit.

Validation

With every passing issue our decision to cancel our Sarasota Herald Tribune subscription proves a good decision.  The Tribune is a NYT company and today had nothing on the 9/12 protest.

The paper has been getting smaller and smaller so believe they will not be around much longer.  Good for them!

I have to register in order to read the NYT online?

I tried to click a link for NYT, and it asked me to register. I guess I will just have to be left out of the loop. Putting a layer in where I can get the same news many different places on the internet seems like a dumb public relations move. If they want to know how many folks are reading online let them put up a site counter like everyone else.

Well, if the NYT didn't

Well, if the NYT doesn't think it's news then it ain't.

This is better than Orwell's Ministry of Truth.  Simply don't report on the stuff or downplay it in the first place...saves the trouble of having to go back and change everything in the future.

Fifty years from now people will be like, "What 'tea parties'???".  They'll think the old guy down the street is senile when he talks about a couple million "tea partiers" having converged upon Washington "back in the day".

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 86% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.

           looks

looks like the "powers that be" own the NYT. Let them ignor us. No one reads that rag any more, any way.

Here in Alaska...

The Anchorage Daily News ignored all protests against higher taxes and the forced take over of Health care.

When a protest was covered it was called "anti-Obama".

I am sick to death of the bias shown by the elitist twits at this rag. They claim to represent Alaskans when clearly, they do nothing more than defend the present administration against the best interests of those they are supposed to protect from liars and tyrants that find foothold in our government. They have made their choice as to who they owe their allegiance to. That much is crystalline clear.  They choose to support the governments interests instead of supporting the rights and liberties of the people.

And they wonder why no one wants to subscribe to their daily dead fish wrapper.

When the ADN dies I will dance JOYFULLY on its grave!

islam is a lie and Truth is killing it.

Obama does not want to dialogue with the American people.

Obama wants to monologue with the American people, and the state run media will do all it can to present his side of the story.

MSM

My local newspaper buried the story on the back section. They are too busy investigating Bobby Jindal. I will be looking for the ratings for Fox news covering this weekend. Then I will forward copies to all my representatives with a missive....

At what point will someone

At what point will someone at NB stop calling the NYT, WaPo, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, etc. journalists and called them what they are - socialist propagandists?

DEATH TO THE MSM...

The fact of the matter is the NYSlimes is going under, little by little, bit by bit. They still set the "agenda" for the networks, & they are losing viewers as well. Both are too damn dumb to understand why. ABC, CBS, NBC, NYSlimes, & the rest of the MSM, here's the deal...

Drudge, Breitbart, FoxNews, & talk radio own your @$$. You can not beat, unless the thugs in the Obama White House REGULATE them out of buisiness. This a fact, you can deny it all day long. But the fact is people get their news elsewhere, BEYOND YOUR CONTROL, & there is not a damn thing you can do to change that.

I agree.

Let's also agree Robert Gibbs and President Obama were so far removed from the mood of the people as to be oblivious of the crowd building outside.

Not a pretty picture, is it?

deal, Cool

As to Gibbs claiming that Obama didn't know anything about what was going on around the country Saturday, it's scary to think that Obama's responsible for the country and is that oblivious to what's happening.  How can someone with such a low level of awareness be competent to function as the president?

Librul media Conspiracy to make Teapartiers look like liars

It's a Librul media Conspiracy to make you look like fools and liars?

1.5 to 2 million Teapartiers showed up and the librul media says it was only 30,000 - 60,000 people.  That is one grand conspiracy to make you look like idiots and liars for claiming 2 million instead.

That librul media sure is organized agin ya.  I'da like to been in that conference call among 200,000 journalists who conspired to keep this secret from real Americans.  I bet George Soros hosted the call.

Tony B., I cleaned up the garbage in your comment. You can thank me any time.

Sources --

UK Daily Mail:

"A million march to US Capitol to protest against 'Obama the socialist'"

USA Today's crowd size model would indicate at least 1.2 million.

Examiner --

"But the Metro police estimated 1.2 million, as reported, and the Parks and Recreation service estimated 1.5. million, according to Tabitha Hale."

Several experienced eyewitnesses claim it is the largest such gathering they have seen, including one cited here at American Thinker:

a spokesman for the National Park Service, Dan Bana, is quoted as saying "It is a record.... We believe it is the largest event held in Washington, D.C., ever."

If so, and if the Obama inauguration estimate of 1.8 million is accurate, that would push 2 million.

Besides that, the evidence is pretty thin. (/sarc)

Oh c'mon...

Citing blind quotes from right wing blogs doesn't count either.  If the NPS estimated that the crowd was "the largest in history," it should be easy to get that agency to say so on the record. According to ABC, the DC Fire department estimated the crowd at 60-70 thousand.

Tom:

Wow, you remove the toilet paper from his shoe, tell him his fly is open, AND provide the requested links.

I'm sure a hearty 'Thanks!' will be forthcoming.

Reputable?

Tabitha Hale and  the American Thinker are not what I'd call reputable sources.  Thats the equivalent of a lefty citing Daily Kos or DU as reliable sources.  ABC, NBC, CBS, NPS, DC PD or Fire...are you saying that all the major news outlets and government agencies are controlled by the left?

What the H*ll is wrong with you?

You've got four sources, you don't like two. At a min, that must mean the other two are fine. You call what you're making an argument?

I don't know why journalists won't report what's right before their eyes without asking them or finding motivational hints in what they write. But if you don't consistently see leftist bias in establishment media news coverage, you're willfully blind in one eye and deliberately won't see out of the other.

Are you really that dense?

Are you one of those folks who thinks that if something is in print, it SIMPLY MUST be true?? The Examiner piece is an editorial that cites Tabitha Hale as its source.  The Daily Mail article went to press hours before the rally started.  That's why they used the "up to 2 mil" construct.  All I'm asking for is one reputable, documented source for the numbers.  So far, every source of that type that I've seen is extimating less than 100K.

No ....

.... you're really that obtuse. See below.

And how in the name of Jayson Blair, Dan Rather, and MSNBC is an establishment media source presumptively "reputable"?

Correlate this

USAT's Parks Service Crowd Size model with this pic.

I'd say 1.2-1.5 mil.

Oh, and here's a guy who did some fairly rigorous work and ends up leaning towards 850K, at least 8 times what you're bitterly clinging to, and has 1.5 million as an estimate based on a people-meter model. It's at a leans-right blog, so I guess it doesn't count (/sarc).

That Examiner reference that

That Examiner reference that names 'Dan Bama' as the NPS spokesman - looks like it may be David Barna, NPS Chief of Public Affairs, instead?

http://www.nps.gov/pub_aff/pressrm.htm

Did you read the comments

Did you read the comments at the site you linked?  If so, then you'll find reasoned estimates by demonstrators who were actually there, and the majority of those clearly reject the 1.5 +.  [BTW, that decade-old promise keeper aerial photo that has so many people buffaloed keeps getting linked.]

Consider the following comment:

"I was there.  I am a loyal man of the right.  If we say that there were more than 50,000, then we sound as crazy as those lefty loons who say there were 100.000.  Trust me.  I live in DC and have to see these protests all the time.  I am the guy counterprotesting them!  I know what 50,000 looks like.  There were 50,000.  That's damn impressive and we should be proud to shout it to the heavens.  But when we say 100,000 or 500,000 or 1 million, people will think we're delusional when we need to be truth tellers."

Granted there were other on-site rational estimations which exceeded this 50,000 estimate, even into the 100s of thousands, but the 1.5+ mil number just doesn't hold water.

Jer

LOOK AT IT THIS WAY...

The numbers I keep hearing is about 2million max. So I just figure that there were more people protesting in Washington DC then watch MSNBC or CNN at any point during the day.

How does that taste over there at 30 Rock?

ABC, NBC, CBS, NPS, DC PD

ABC, NBC, CBS, NPS, DC PD or Fire...are you saying that all the major
news outlets and government agencies are controlled by the left?

Ya think?????

It just hit me...

For you people, there are no reputable sources, no trustworthy government agencies, nothing that is believable unless it agrees with your warped worldview.  All the major media outlets, except for Fox News, all government agencies, even down to the level of the local fire department are in the pocket of the evil liberal overlords.

It must be depressing to live in such a dark, twisted world.  I understand your anger...believing as you do must be terrifying.  Your fear feeds that anger and so you strike out at everything that doesn't support the concept that you are right and are only out of power because of some sort of nefarious plot.  Ah well, march on little soldiers, wave your Hitler and Stalin signs; pat each other on the back and gloat over how superior you are to those stupid liberals while at the same time you shiver at the thought of their control of all the information that Americans are exposed to.  I truly feel sorry for you.

Bye

Proving once again ....

.... that denial is more than a river in Egypt, and that well-researched facts are stubborn things -- but not as stubborn as those who won't acknowledge them.

Also showing that calling someone a bigot, Hitler, or Stalinist is the last refuge of a liberal who just got "pwned."

→ Oreogyny

Just like 007memo, this stuff really gets your drawers all wedged up, doesn't it?

If we were talking about the "Black Wall Street" massacre, you'd doubtless be quoting sources you know nothing about.

But what you're doing here is claiming that since the big name news outlets didn't cover it, it must've been a tempest in a teapot.

Do you think we'd be discussing this were it not for the fun we have with truthers like you?

LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

Thanks for the in-depth psychiatric evaluation, Dr. Freud

But why are you libs so scared to death that so many average Americans showed up? (That's rhetorical - we actually do know why)

BWAHAHAHAHA!

LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

Thanks for that, I always wondered what the lib's fascination with them critters was.

I used to think it was all about unicorns crapping Lucky Charms.

What's the issue here?

Why are folks on the left getting all wee-weed up over the number of folks who attended the Tea Party rally on Saturday?  The only implications of a higher or lower number that I can think of would have to do with whether or not it validates the assumed popularity of the Tea Party movement.

Is the left looking for a reason to say the Tea Party movement isn't as popular as it's being portrayed to be?  Do the folks on the right have to have a huge number of people in attendance to validate their beliefs?  My guess would be the former.  Why else would the folks on the left push so hard on this issue?  It's really starting to look like an act of desperation on their part to prove that there weren't really a whole lot of people there Saturday.

Since there's apparently no definitive source of information about the number of people who attended Saturday, all these debates are pointless.  Anybody can look at the videos and see there were a lot of people there.  How many is a lot?  It's up to you, I guess.

Orogeny, I feel sorry for you, too.  You're chasing your tail on this thing.

There is no such person. Bozo at the American Thinker couldn't spell the name of the person he was misquoting. Who was talking about the inauguration.

Mr. Blumer,
Thanks for cleaning up after me.
The crowd picture you linked to is apparently much older than 9/12/09.

Which link of Mr. Blumers are you referring to?

Try to pay attention. Tony

It was clearly stated the linked photo was for correlation purposes.

Correlating meaning comparing two different things.

Tony, Tony, Tony. Do you

Tony, Tony, Tony.

Do you even bother to READ the posts?  The picture that Tom put up was for you to use to see how the Park Service figures crowd size with this graph.  Which for that gathering (which was NOT the 0912 demonstration) they estimated 1.2 - 1.5 million people.

Tom NEVER stated that the picture was one of the 0912 demonstration.

So please clean your glasses off and peddle your bias elsewhere.

No he can't.  I provided a bit more information for him.  Let's see if it will sink in.

Hmmm, what we have here is

Hmmm, what we have here is a failure to track.  So I propose all people in the USA get electronic tracking devices installed for times like these.  They could be easily installed under the skin on the forehead or right hand.  They could very easily also be used as credit cards, one could just register all the credit cards they have and we could have one number, unique for all.

We could then end these silly arguments over how many were at what rally as we could have real numbers.  We could also end the illegal getting healthcare also by refusing service to those without the ID number.  We could authorize individuals for any number of common every day events.  Like buying and selling it would track the tax cheats by determining the amount of money and where people are spending.

YES WE CAN.

Mr. Blumer linked to a file named 912aerial at his “correlate this” comment. It is not 9/12/09, as he seems to suggest.

Tony,tony, tony.

Let's take a look at the link Mr. Blumer provided:

Hmmmmm, mmatters?  Oh dear!!  Tell me, could this website that labeled the photo actually be Media Matters?  A website dedicated to "correcting" conservative "misinformation"?  Oh my gosh!!!

It looks like Media Matters mis-labeled the photo so all you kool-aid drinkers could try and rebut anyone using the photo.

HAH!!!!

You and your ilk have proved once again you are willing to lie and slander to further your cause.

Go away Troll.

mmatters

I don’t imagine Mr. Blumer will ever tell you that mmatters is not related to Media Matters, so here’s a link:

the number is not the news

its that its being ignored entirely despite the high turnout.  I feel like I am repeating myself a lot today.  I am really frustrated with the obsession with the exact estimate and I think it really detracts from the issues it should be raising.

This thread will be nothing more than a playground for trolls who want to pick apart the precision of the estimates.

Kata

That's exactly the point.  The trolls are getting everyone gummed up about numbers instead of talking about the rally.

I wish people would just ignore them when they start talking about it.

FF...

Has it escaped you that the central point of several of the blogs is "all about the numbers"?  And yet you suggest it is the trolls who have shifted the focus to the numbers.  NewsBusters grabbed the 1.5-2 mil figure and ran with it.  Exactly how or why should it be immunized from skepticism?

Jer

Well then...

Perhaps you should suggest to the "reporters" on your side to get the numbers right in the first place.

my side?

I have no "side".

Well, go away for 7 hours and all heck breaks loose

Points:

- mmatters is short for my company, Monetary Matters, monetarymatters.com. Bleep you Tony the Troll for assuming I wouldn't clear that up. You're still the same POS (Petty, Obstinate, Stupid) person you were at my place before I lost patience with your non-stop childishness.

- The photo posted at the mmatters Photobucket is from an e-mail a reliable source sent to me, who told me that it was from Saturday, Sept. 12. I have no reason to believe it is not. The photo is not from Inauguration Day, as that day was overcast.

- The crowd pictured fils the middle slot of the USAT/Park Service's crowd size estimator (i.e. about 940,000). There would appear to be a couple hundred thousand more around the Washington Monument area. It's not possible to tell whether the front quadrant near the Capitol (potentially 240,000) is full. That leads to the estimate of 1.2-1.5 million.

- Even if one believes the photo is from another event (and again, I have no reason to believe it is not from Saturday), Charles Martin of PJM as noted above came up with 850,000 as pretty much an absolute minimum.

- Michelle Malkin reported on Saturday at 12:34 p.m. that "Police estimate 1.2 million in attendance." I believe that would have been based on a TV report, because she wasn't there.

All of the above, plus the time lapse photography YouTubes that are kicking around, plus the testimonials seen and heard in various places, PLUS the Democratic Party's false-flag expectation of 2 million leaked the day before (an attempt to make the turnout "disappointing" no matter how big it turned out to be), all lend credibility to the idea that the crowd was at the very least the largest non-Inauguration crowd ever.

All the trolls and concerted establishment media dissembling in the world won't change that.

I'd rather not spend so much time on crowd size, but when the establishment press is presenting numbers that are 90% or so below anything resembling objective reality, they need to be called out, because they are wrong, and deliberately so.

Oh, and One More Thing ....

.... HERE ("Amazing Photos: 9/12 march on Washington")

thanks Tom

I love the view :)

Your reliable source

Mr. Blumer,
WorldNetDaily identifies your e-mailer’s photo as the 1997 Promise Keepers rally:

Ok ....

.... this photo montage shows the crowd to be just as big if not bigger than that event. .... as does this one .... and this one ....

Thanks for the help. :-->
