There's a reason Matt Drudge just got done celebrating an all-time record August traffic count. His visitors know that he constantly links to newsworthy stories they likely won't find reported prominently in establishment U.S. media outlets, if they're reported at all.
Such will likely be the case with a blockbuster story coming out of Great Britain tonight, courtesy of the U.K. Telegraph. It seems that there's this treatment protocol called the "Liverpool Care Pathway." Under the Pathway's guidelines, according to the Telegraph, "Under the guidelines the decision to diagnose that a patient is close to death is made by the entire medical team treating them, including a senior doctor."
Why, if I didn't know any better, that sounds like a d-d-d-d-death panel, complete with top-down ("senior doctor") supervision.
Here are just a few excerpts from Telegraph Medical Correspondent Kate Devlin's must-read report. Especially note the chilling statistic in the second-last paragraph of the excerpt:
Sentenced to death on the NHS
Patients with terminal illnesses are being made to die prematurely under an NHS scheme to help end their lives, leading doctors warn today. In a letter to The Daily Telegraph, a group of experts who care for the terminally ill claim that some patients are being wrongly judged as close to death.
Under NHS guidance introduced across England to help doctors and medical staff deal with dying patients, they can then have fluid and drugs withdrawn and many are put on continuous sedation until they pass away. But this approach can also mask the signs that their condition is improving, the experts warn.
As a result the scheme is causing a “national crisis” in patient care, the letter states. It has been signed palliative care experts including Professor Peter Millard, Emeritus Professor of Geriatrics, University of London, Dr Peter Hargreaves, a consultant in Palliative Medicine at St Luke’s cancer centre in Guildford, and four others.
“Forecasting death is an inexact science,”they say. Patients are being diagnosed as being close to death “without regard to the fact that the diagnosis could be wrong.
“As a result a national wave of discontent is building up, as family and friends witness the denial of fluids and food to patients."
.... (Dr. Hargreaves) added that some patients were being “wrongly” put on the pathway, which created a “self-fulfilling prophecy” that they would die.
..... “It is supposed to let people die with dignity but it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
“Patients who are allowed to become dehydrated and then become confused can be wrongly put on this pathway.”
In 2007-08 16.5 per cent of deaths in Britain came about after continuous deep sedation, according to researchers at the Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, twice as many as in Belgium and the Netherlands.
“If they are sedated it is much harder to see that a patient is getting better,” Prof Millard said.
Based on the above 16.5% statistic, about 95,000 of the UK's 574,700 deaths in 2007 "came after continuous deep sedation." If the UK's death rate after continuous deep sedation would have replicated Belgium and the Netherlands, about 47,000 fewer would have died under those circumstances. How many of them should still be alive today? The suggestion that the number is in the thousands, if not the tens of thousands, would appear to be not at all unreasonable.
So whaddaya think, New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, Associated Press, and Big 3 networks? In the midst of an attempt to impose a statist health care system on this country, isn't the fact that one of the oldest statist health care systems in the world is more than likely systematically and prematurely offing thousands of patients a story? Or are you going to let Matt Drudge keep linking to the real news you ignore until you're no longing just circling the drain, but actually in it?

It sounds like a death panel because it is a death panel. While the
Narcissistic One has denied that what happens in the UK health care system will ever
happen here I don't believe a word that he says. The more that I see of
the Prez the less I trust the government that he is creating.

people need to understand why this is important
September 3, 2009 - 00:29 ET by candanceThis is the Terri Shiavo case being taken out of court and put into the hands of doctors who have complete autonomy. If they decide you're a lost cause, no more food or water, and we'll keep you doped up so you don't feel the pain of dying.
And unlike Terri Shiavo, many of the people in UK are flat out being diagnosed wrong and then kept under heavy sedation to prevent them from waking up.
Now think about this in the hands of a beaurocrat looking to limit population size, or even save money in the federal budget.
But....but.....but......that
September 3, 2009 - 05:54 ET by motherbeltBut....but.....but......that would never happen here!
We have the right people in charge!!
And it's not a "death panel" anway! It's a "Care [or lack of] Pathway." See? The Brits are as good at eupemism as our own government!
This President says that an insurance agent shouldn't come between you and your doctor. Right...it should be a panel of government bureaucrats!! I don't care if they are all doctors; once they work for the government, they become bureaucrats.
Don't anyone try to tell us they won't have a set of government "guidelines" to follow.
MB, it happens here
September 3, 2009 - 07:42 ET by LeondeuxMB, it happens here already. What are you talking about?
Case Study: Nataline Sarkisyan (17 years old)
Denied a liver transplant by her insurer, CIGNA, because she was suffering from Leukemia and the liver transplant wouldn't have directly saved her life. Died December 2007
That's one story of thousands and thousands. Cry about your supposed death panel future all you want, but it's already here...and being employed solely to maximize profit!
Can we get the MSM to take a pill per Dr. Obama's order?
September 3, 2009 - 02:58 ET by legacyrepublicanThat way they will just sleep until they officially die and not get in the way of a younger and more vibrant , resurgent news media that reports news and doesn't opine news!
I, for one, am tired of their death moans.
But remember, folks...

Voting for or Supporting Barack Obama are Bad Decisions
September 3, 2009 - 03:50 ET by Retired GeekAny decision and subsequent actions based on those decisions, become a direct reflection of a Humans cognitive abilities, character and essential nature.
Many American Citizens 'Invested Themselves' in the candidacy of Barack Obama, by directly voting for him or by a 'Proxy Vote' (voting for a third party candidate who had NO chance of winning) and are NOW facing the dilemma of having to account to themselves and others about their 'Bad Decision'.
It is Human Nature to defend 'Bad Decisions', even when faced with overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
Barack Obama has always been a 'Motivator' and has never been a leader and in probability will never be a leader.
Leadership is based in self-sacrifice, directing and leading the way, motivation revolves around 'Self-interest' of the person being motivated or the the 'Self-Interests' of the Motivator.
Barack Obama presented himself as someone who could 'Heal the Racial Problems' in America, even though Obama himself had a long history of 'Black Separatism' and creating 'Racial Strife'.
The MSM and Obama supporters stated repeatedly, that Obama's lack of 'Business Experience' would and could be overcome by surrounding himself with the astute - even though Barack Obama had a long history of choosing only 'Radicals' and America haters for his friends and alliances.
Continuing to believe that voting for Barack Obama was a 'Good Decision' is irrational and trying to justify that 'Bad Decision' is nothing more than a pathetic attempt to appear rational, save face and delay the consequences of poor judgment and action.
Defending or Supporting Barack Obama is irrational and a 'Hopeless Project', when in reality defending Barack Obama is simply a cover-up of self deception and wishful thinking.
Total Non-Issue
September 3, 2009 - 07:38 ET by LeondeuxI seriously can't comprehend this feigned fear over 'death panels'.
This kind of care rationing already happens with private insurers and it's been going on for years! Are you all kidding?
Tom Blumer, you need to do some homework my good man or at least stop inciting this kind of madness.
Insurance companies deny coverage all the time based on utilitarian rationing. To pretend otherwise is insane.
Show me ....
September 3, 2009 - 08:37 ET by Tom Blumer.... the THOUSANDS of dead bodies as just alluded to in the UK. Given that it's a nation of only 60 million, you'd have to show me something on the order of 30,000-50,000 or more instances here. Good luck. Not even the Democrats at their most feverish are willing to go there.
I'n not "inciting" anything. Direct your "incitement" charge to the UK doctors involved and the UK Telegraph.
Perhaps a nonissue
September 3, 2009 - 08:37 ET by bluefeetbrewsMy reading of it was that it takes the entire panel to put someone on the pathway. Perhaps a single doctor can diagnose 1 ailment or another, but in the case of dying patients the doctors all convene to add another layer of internal control...would that not cut down on the risk of an error by a single doctor?
"I seriously can't

I suspect there are plenty of things that are beyond your comprehension....like 2+2, the color of the sky, personal hygiene, etc.

Really? Cuz last time I checked, the insurance companies didn't run the hospitals/doctors in my neighborhood. They don't get to tell me I can't get a procedure done, they can only choose to not pay for it. And if that was happening as often as people like you claim, no one would buy insurance. What would be the point? You don't remain in business very long by screwing over your customers...well, unless you're government.
Oh, and since you brought up Cigna in another post, I'll let you in on a little secret.....if your employer has crafted an insurance plan that doesn't cover transplants, guess what? Transplants aren't covered.
Shame on you for exploiting that poor girl's death on this issue. Who do you think you are, John Edwards?
and there it is

September 3, 2009 - 08:38 ET by Airforce_5_OMatt's is the first site I hit every morning when I get to the office and at home on the weekends because of the stuff other news sites are afraid to put out. It seems the Obama networks and papers are they just might piss off the White House if they don't hit the TALKING POINTS MEMO!
I was so mad after reading this article first thing I sent it to my Office Dem. He seriously looked at me and says "Do you believe everything you read?" I started laughing so hard. I mean the only retort I had was "Do you even read or do you just take everything they tell you from the White House as gospel?" Nothing.
