Patterico Busts TX Grad Student/Obama Delegate Posing As Doctor; Chron Doesn't Credit, Still Disclosure-Challenged

Topside Update, 2:15 p.m.: Imagine that -- Roxana Mayer was also an Organizing For America "host" during the Texas primary last year.

Anyone visiting here even semi-regularly knows that the establishment media consistently fails to determine the legitimacy of people who "say the right things." Further, when someone else, often a blogger, digs and finds the truth, the reporters and publications involved may sometimes grudgingly acknowledge it, but even then usually incompletely; and more often than not, they won't give credit where due.

This all-too-typical scenario has played out in the past two days in the case of a certain Roxana Mayer. In two posts (here and here), LA-area blogger Patterico, best known for his relentless skewering of the target-rich environment known as the Los Angeles Times, exposed Ms. Mayer, who claimed to be a doctor when she spoke at a town hall meeting held by Houston Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (and who later hugged her, as seen at the top right), as a leftist fraud.

As Patterico noted in the title of his second post, Mayer's mantra ought to be "I’m Not a Doctor But I Play One at Town Hall Meetings." Patterico also showed that Mayer was also a Texas Obama delegate at last year's Democratic Convention.

At first, the Houston Chronicle took Mayer's word that she is a doctor, failed to investigate her bona fides, and reported the following:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Some attendees at the meeting spoke in favor of the plan, go (sic -- going?) so far as to want a system where the government had complete control.

One supporter, Dr. Roxana Mayer, a physician who does not live in Jackson Lee’s district, praised the reform plan for overhauling a broken system.

“I don’t know what there is in the bill that creates such panic,” she said.

Suspicious, Patterico began digging, finding the following in short order:

  • "The AMA Doctor Finder doesn’t list any physician named Roxana Mayer."
  • "Nor does the Texas Medical Association."
  • "Linked In lists a Roxana Mayer — who, according to LinkedIn, is slated to graduate from the University of Houston with a Masters in Social Work in 2010."
  • "However, the University of Houston lists a student by the name of Roxana Mercedes Mayer."

So Patterico went to the source, e-mailing the LinkedIn Ms. Mayer. Hilarity ensued. By the time the exchange ended, "poor" Ms. Mayer was in full moonbat mode:

(Patterico)

1) Are you the person who attended Jackson Lee’s town hall meeting?
2) Are you a doctor?
3) If not, why did you claim to be one?
4) Were you a Texas delegate for Obama?
5) Why did you go to the town hall meeting?
6) Who encouraged you to go?
7) Did Sheila Jackson Lee’s husband have anything to do with your going?

(Mayer)

I suspect you don’t need me to answer the first four…but I’ll say for what it’s worth, I went to get a question answered for myself and two other people close to me who are doctors. Too bad she didn’t answer it. I also went to lend support to the reform effort. It’s easier to be against something especially since anger is such a great motivator.

Also, I have never met the Congresslady or her husband–it’s a big school. I do think this is all very funny because I just assume that if my going had been part of a conspiracy, it would have been more seemlessly executed.

While I’m sure I lack your creativity and passion, I have possessed some spontaneity from time to time.

(Patterico)

If I understand what’s going on here, you’re not a doctor, but you play one at town hall meetings. Is that about it?

(Mayer)

Do you mean play a doctor like you play a journalist? Then the answer is no. But who knows, that was only my first town hall meeting–even though I was a delegate. If I go to another one, which I seriously doubt because my husband is already extremely annoyed, then maybe I’ll play a plumber.

After Patterico did the dirty work, the Chronicle's Cynthia Horswell added the following four paragraphs to the story this morning, while giving Patterico no credit:

In an e-mail to the Chronicle on Thursday morning, Mayer confirmed she is not a licensed physician.

"I have been advised to refrain from making any further statements," she said.

In the initial story about the event, the Chronicle reported that she was a doctor based on her claim at the meeting.

Today, Jackson Lee denied knowing Mayer and said she was not planted as a friendly voice in the crowd.

Horswell's story, time-stamped at of 10:46 a.m. CT as of the time of this post (saved here at my host for future reference) has the same URL to which Patterico linked, meaning that Horswell's current renditon has effectively flushed all previous versions down the Chron's memory hole.

Horswell still hasn't told readers that Mayer was an Obama delegate. Patterico commenter "mike in houston" reports direct e-mail evidence from Horswell that the Chron reporter has known this from the very beginning of this sordid episode and has chosen not to disclose. Mayer's status as a delegate, along with additional "coincidences" reported at LoneStarTimes.com, would tend to severely if not fatally dent the credibility of Jackson Lee's claim not to know her -- even beyond the hug picture with Mayer and Lee the Chron has already published.

The caption to that picture is currently on at least its third rendition, currently reading "Sheila Jackson Lee hugs Roxana Mayer at her town hall meeting at Peavy Neighborhood Center. Mayer identified herself as a physician who does not live in Jackson Lee's district. However, her name does not appear in the database maintained by the Texas Medical Board, which licenses all doctors in Texas."

Two previous renditions captured by Patterico read as follows:

  • "Sheila Jackson Lee hugs Dr. Roxana Mayer, a pediatric primary care physician, at her town hall meeting at Peavy Neighborhood Center."
  • "Sheila Jackson Lee hugs Roxana Mayer at her town hall meeting at Peavy Neighborhood Center."

Understatement of the week by Patterico: "Not the greatest vetting by the Chronicle." Not the most honest either. And sadly, also not atypical.

Is this the kind of health

Is this the kind of health professionals we can expect when we face the death panels?

Yikes, d1! Now you really

Yikes, d1! Now you really got me scared. Seriously. I believe it could happen, what with the shortage of doctors that would ensue with government healthcare. Of course, this means Obama could kill two birds with one stone. They'll be a special, basic medical knowledge quiz available at the unemployment office. If you pass - voila - you're a doctor. Ya know, my family often refers to me as Dr. Mom. Who knew I could pursue a medical career at this stage of my life? No need to waste all that time in medical school, etc. Just pass the test and I'm on my way to a 5-figure income somewhere below that magic $250,000 number.

Yes!

Funny--we will be duking it out with faux mob doctors.

If I'm not mistaken...

... it's a felony in Texas to falsely represent yourself to be a physician. Just saying.

Same meeting?

Was this the meeting where Jackson Lee took a cell phone call and talked while someone was asking their question? That was a nice touch. She said later she was just checking her talking pts with WH. Look those up beforehand!

Fraud is Dem's middle name

What don't they lie about? lol.  That would be a much shorter list.  M-B

"Cell phone" Lee

Was Lee on the cell phone when the "doctor" was speaking? Noooo

That was a conservative she was ignoring. M-B

Super astroturf...dumb as Congress. Borders on illegal. But hey,  I am sure that our Justice Department will look into this. Yeah, right.

Liar

This woman stood right up and introduced herself as "Doctor" and stated she was a "general practitioner".  She wasn't mis-labled as a physician.  She broke Texas law.

""I have been advised to refrain from making any further statements," she said."

No S--, Sherlock.

Hm, Texn. Are you using

Hm, Texn. Are you using "liar" as a "code" word for the "n" word? I'm only asking because I've also heard that the word "socialist" may be a "code" word for the "n" word. I think we should be saying that the young woman needs to "recalibrate" her words. (sarc off)

This is a delicious lunchtime treat, Tom

Well, I guess it doesn't matter as long as Ms. Mayer doesn't actually try to practice medicine. LOL :) Wonder how she feels now about being Jackson-Lee's house "n"? (Hope I haven't stepped over the line by vaguely referring to a term used to demonize Pres. Bush and the Republican party.)

I'm not a liberal

But I play one for facebook!  If I put doctor in my profile there can I claim that too!!!!!

Liberalism: The huanting feeling that someone, somewhere, can help themselves.

She also....

...stayed at a Holiday Inn a couple of times.

SJL isn't

SJL isn't a real congresswoman either, but she does play one on TV.  That's why we all call her Sheila Jackson "TV" Lee, you do NOT want to be between that woman and a TV camera...you'll get trampled for sure.  (or for that matter, between her and a limo; her and an expensive meal; her and Tha One, etc. etc.)

She's a total joke, rude, crude, greedy, and arrogant beyond all belief.   She's the #1 reason to be embarrassed for being from Houston.  And I am whenever it's mentioned that she's from here.

We're early in the comments section for this article, BUT

I can't wait to see the troll-spin.  Perhaps one of their little noggins will spin right off, who knows?  How ever our resident libs. excuse the "good doctor's" actions should be amusing.

troll-spin

The lefties over at HA are splitting hairs over what kind of doctor she claimed to be, as if lying about being a "low level" doctor is not as bad as pretending to be a brain surgeon.

Not even kidding.

Then they accused us of treating her the same as Joe the Plumber.

These people really believe the ends justify the means.

The law of diminishing returns

If you fake these staged presentations often enough, their credibility goes down. You defeat your own purpose. When they screen the audience, then everyone catches onto the trick, and then you never look at a packed hall the same way again.

Yeah, I know Bush did it (they all do it), and I didn't like it then, either. I accept that it's standard public relations, but that doesn't give it any more credibility.

One advantage of the modern media experience: most people now know the standard media tricks. When they have the spin room after the debates, everyone knows that the hacks are interviewing the flacks, and everything said there is completely programmed and predictable. Repeat after me: "I think he hit ... a ... home ... run!"

These days, the only innovation is honesty. It's the only response no one is expecting.

Wow, candance, I hadn't thought of that one!

Can you smell the desparation?  Just realized something: not only is there an actual troll language, but they have their own special scent, don't they?

"...it must be known that we are at all times ready for war." G. Washington

Lame

"Then they accused us of treating her the same as Joe the Plumber."

Did Joe lie about being a plumber? Did he say he was a "pipe doctor" or something of the sort? Or was he really a doctor who only claimed to be a plumber in order to garner the media attention? Since when is revealing the truth considered bad form? I guess it's difficult for some folks to decipher the difference between telling the truth and being just plain mean for the sake of discrediting the opposition.

Physician

heel thyself!

"What a revoltin' development this is!"

Chester Riley

Wowzer, in one or two paragraphs:

She managed to make it sound altruistic to break the law (misrepresenting herself as a physician).

She managed to spew the left wing "angry white man" rhetoric for these town halls with the "anger is a motivator" comment.

She attacked the messenger, who was, in fact, being a far more responsible journalist than anyone you can find in the MSM right now.

She managed to play victim, pointing to her husbands annoyance.

She managed to attack working class conservative citizens, Joe the Plumber.

Delegate, heck, she's qualified to be a liberal Senator, or even the President!

Its important to note

That in Texas it is illegal to impersonate a doctor and this woman clearly broke the law on national TV.

Subtrafuge

"I am not legally President, But I play one in the White House."

Isaiah 5:20a Woe unto them who call evil good, and good evil. . .  KJV

Perfect, 1611LL.

Isn't it telling that we are all responding so strongly simply to a REAL journalist doing something that rarely happens in the SCM - investigating.

We are so starved for honest investigation and research in our news stories that when it happens, we devour the story as if  we have never read an indepth, honest piece before.  How refreshing; thanks NB, once again!

have an idea Tom

Could someone do a comparison here with her vs JTP? How the media tripped over themselves to embarrass him? Reuters, Washington Post, NY Times, and AP all went out of their way to make him look like a liar.

A Google search of this story finds that, thus far, not one major news wire picked up in on.

Dr. Who

How low will these SOB's go. This is getting beyond unreal.

Applause

Excellent investigative reporting, Patterico.

Maybe "Dateline" will want

Maybe "Dateline" will want to interview her, kinda like they did with "Korean War Vet" Ed Daily who told them he about his involvement at No Gun Ri, but when real people from the Military investigated Daily, they realized his story was false.

will it get national coverage?

I'm thinking that impersonating a responsible member of society is probably taught under the "community organizer" section of the social worker test.  The products of our educational systems just keep getting better and better.

I would be so happy if this woman was held accountable.  Any Texas Rangers with a little time on their hands?

"Rather" good reportage

The coverage was not true, but accurate, in Dan's immortal words. Isn't that good enough for the conservatives?

 What's the problem? under

What's the problem? under obama's plan she'll qualify as a doctor, who better than a social worker to decide if your fit to live?

I read somewhere, in connection with this situation, that

it is a crime  to impersonate a physician in the state of Texas. Something to look into?

Only when trying to practice or give advice about medicine, otherwise it is not against the law to tell someone you are something you are not unless it is in the commission of a crime.

Regardless, the Social

Regardless, the Social Worker's unethical behaviour should cause concern and potential sanctions from both her graduating school's program and the credentialing/regulatory bodies for those with her alledged degree.

If she lies like this now, what sort of assumption should society make about her veracity in the future when working with patients?

She's either has a screw loose, is immature to the point of dubiousness to handle a position of authority and power, or is ethically-challenged to the point of not to be trusted in her future duties.

Would you want this woman working for you either as employee or as your personal case worker?

the great pretenders

And we have an incompetent idiot in the White House pretending to be president. Seems to run in the “family”

That's the difference

That's the difference between Conservatives and Communists.

When someone who associates with us does something unacceptable, we denounce them and dissociate from them.  We don't justify the Watergate break in, we don't say, "Well, McVeigh did have a point", we didn't convince ourselves that that woman who made up the attack by Obama supporters last year was telling the truth after all.

For the Communists there is no outrage, no bald-faced lie, no smear, no sleazy/unfounded accusation that they will distance themselves from.

After all, that's all they have.  They can't justify 150 years of a failed ideology to rational people.  All they have is their anger, their inherent wise-a$$ smirks, their knee-jerk emotionalism and their self-reported high IQ scores.

What they need to realize is that there is only so much that people who just want to be left alone to live their lives in peace and without goading and interference can take.

We aren't interested in their mental games and their academic visions of a Utopian society.  We have real lives, responsibilities, and families to deal with and that's hard enough even in the best of times.

Our country isn't a Dungeons and Dragons board for them to play their fantasies out upon.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 86% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.

Once Again . . .

. . . The ''amateur'' reporter gets the facts.  And the fake, lying, law-breaking Leftist gets a pass. And why shouldn't the fake ''Representative'' use a fake doctor to push a fake president's HC plan?

And that's the opinion of a Genuine fake Doktor.  Now, turn your head and cough.

Fakes

petitjean

During my brief time in government I exposed one fake GS-14 federal employee who was under my orders and who claimed a degree from and overseas university he didn't have. I paid my own money to check the guy out.

Reported him to the Office of Personnel and Management and provided documents. Nothing was done. I quit, The guy has been there several years since I sent evidence of his lies on his application for employment. He is now nearing 25 years with the feds and after all his discrimination lawsuits are done, will likely retire on a very nice pension. He may hit the lawsuit lottery jackpot in the meantime. He has filed over 30 discrimination suits since being in federal employment.

That is why I took a cut in pay to return to private sector work. Never again will I work for a government agency. The people higher up are aware of all of this but don't seem to care. I view it as corruption.
