Today Joe Biden was in Alexandria, VA, and said, as reported by CNS News:
People look at me and say, "What are you talking about, Joe? You're telling me we've got to go spend money to keep from going bankrupt?" The answer is "Yes,"I'm tellin' ya.
Matt Drudge thinks this is news (link is to his time-stamped archive, which won't change); it is his top headline. Allah at Hot Air thinks it's news, as do many other center-right bloggers.
So did Sean Hannity tonight.
Anyone with a fifth-grade sense of journalism would know that Biden's statement is newsworthy.
The Associated Press reported on Biden's Alexandria appearance. Here are the first three paragraphs of the wire service's unbylined story:
Vice President Joe Biden says there has never been a better time to overhaul the nation's health care system because the industry now recognizes that helping the uninsured will ultimately bolster its bottom line.
Biden joined Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at a health care forum in Alexandria, Va., on Thursday.
He told a group of nearly 200 people, mostly senior citizens, that he understands cynicism about drug companies' promises to contribute billions of dollars in savings.
The AP didn't think Biden's incredible statement was newsworthy; it must see part of its job description as "covering Joe Biden's tracks as much as possible, even if we look like ignorant fools when we do it."
The "Essential Global News Network" ought to be renamed the Apparatchik Press.

BUCHANAN: THE SOCIALIST $UMMARY
July 17, 2009 - 09:26 ET by reelman46BUCHANAN: THE SOCIALIST SUMMARY
Socialist America sinking
7.16.09 by P. Buchanan
….. One need only glance at where we were before the New Deal, where
we are and where we are headed to see how far we are off the course the
Founding Fathers set for our republic.
Taxes drove the American Revolution, for we were a taxaphobic,
liberty-loving people. When Coolidge went home in 1929, the U.S.
government was spending 3 percent of gross domestic product.
And today? Obama’s first budget will consume 28 percent of the entire
GDP; state and local governments another 15 percent. While there is
some overlap, in 2009, government will consume 40 percent of GDP,
approaching the peak of World War II.
The deficit for 2009 is $1.8 trillion, 13 percent of the whole
economy. Obama is pushing a cap-and-trade bill to cut carbon emissions
that will impose huge costs on energy production, spike consumer prices
and drive production offshore to China, which is opting out of Kyoto
II. The Chinese are not fools.
Obama plans to repeal the Bush tax cuts and take the income tax rate to
near 40 percent. Combined state and local income tax rates can run to
10 percent. For the self-employed, payroll taxes add up to 15.2 percent
on the first $106,800 for all wages of all workers. Medicare takes 2.9
percent of all wages above that. Then there are the state sales taxes
that can run to 8 percent, property taxes, gas taxes, excise taxes and
“sin taxes” on booze, cigarettes and, soon, hot dogs and soft drinks.
Comes now national health insurance from Nancy Pelosi’s House. A
surtax that runs to 5.4 percent of all earnings of the top 1 percent of
Americans, who already pay 40 percent of all federal income taxes, has
been sent to the Senate. Included also is an 8 percent tax on the
entire payroll of small businesses that fail to provide health
insurance for employees.
Other ideas on the table include taxing the health benefits that businesses provide their employees…..
CRAWFISH NOTE: Read this post again. Is there anything in it (all FACTS) that does not scare the average voter?
There is no free lunch in socialism. You will pay…not only personally
but inflation must rise dramatically as debt soars. Taxing the
so-called rich (most are small businesses) means its passed to the
consumer (aka you) or jobs are lost (aka yours). That means the “little
guy” is again hurt by the democrat Party. Keep in mind the gov-meant
has a history of being 3-9x too low on new program costs (they are
either dim or deceptive) to voters. Ever heard of taxing your way to
prosperity? When and where?
If the liberals had been teaching real 20th century history in our
schools the younger voters would know the 1970s Misery Index of
democrat Jimmah Carter. Look it up now. Watch the Dow…it was 13k the
summer of 2008. Wanna bet its 12k next summer? Go “hope” for that
“change” too.
Another democrat “Tax U Phase” is near (aka buy votes/create
dependency/grow gov-meant). Plan accordingly. J. Carter Obama lives.

July 16, 2009 - 23:43 ET by Scout FinchDemocrats always find a way to "enhance revenue building" opportunities.
Why is this surprising any1?
July 17, 2009 - 02:15 ET by Timothy HIsn't this esentially the philosophy that the MSM and the dems have been pushing? Wasn't the idea behind the stimulus that it was, in a round about way, spending money to improve the economy, and by proxy improving tax revenues? Is anyone here really under the illusion that Dems care about the economy for any reason other than tax revenues?
This was no gaffe, I'm afraid. This was just an extention of the socialist policy. Joe being Joe, in this case, was just Joe being honest. That's why the lib press missed it. They agree.

July 17, 2009 - 03:21 ET by RR GOPThe 1970s were the best of times for government programs. I still have brochures from the various government agencies that I picked up at the Bicentennial celebration at the Kennedy Space Center. Very educational as I at a tender age had no idea of the plethora of government programs that were around.
Then shortly after that, came Carter, the recession, etc. Took me a few years to put 2 + 2 together. In short, we've been through this BS before and it didn't work. Some national debt and trade deficit is no big deal, but these clowns are acting like making payments on one credit card with another is a good idea.

July 17, 2009 - 03:54 ET by Timothy HAgreed. Those who fail to learn fromthe past are doomed to repeat it. Libs are obviously behind the learning curve here.

July 17, 2009 - 04:10 ET by RR GOPTH-I can understand the diehard Libs and those who are young and ignorant and just don't know any better, but what about the cynical and hypercritical independents and the elderly? They've been around the block and should know better than to vote for such a loser, but hey, incredible as it may seem they did re-elect Clinton.
The government's never given me anything. I can't count on them for anything-other than to be a pain in my a$$, regulate me, and stick their hands in my pockets whenever they feel like it.
This has to be the experience of the vast majority of Americans-and they wanted even more of this?

RR.....Exactly
July 17, 2009 - 04:30 ET by Timothy HI mean, who couldn't see this coming but a kid looking through rose -shaded lenses? 8% my arse. Stimulus 2. Expecting Stimulus 3 around New Years. I am laid off for the first time in my life, and am fearing no relief is coming.
Gov't has never given me anything but nausea. Dems control everything and are still blaming everything on someone else.
I suddenly find myself wondering what happened to all of those people who thought Obama was going to buy them a house and make sure they had more money in their pockets, after the regressive taxes (i.e. cigarettes), the plans to tax the middle class for not buying insurance, and cap and tax. Dems don't stop taxing at 250K, they just have different names for it to slide it by you.
Now they're sitting around wondering where the bus came that ran them over.

TH-I'm pretty sure there
July 17, 2009 - 04:37 ET by RR GOPTH-I'm pretty sure there will indeed be people who get free stuff from the government (us of course), but you're right-it won't include the vast majority who thought they'd get something out of Uncle Sam.
Also, I don't blame just the Democrats though they're the main culprits. This election cycle has been a real eye-opener for me on a heck of a lot of these GOP members who just go along with the flow and are basically Liberal Democrats.
Even the conservative Republicans are disappointing. They are hesitant to do away with these slacker programs or to reduce taxes unless push comes to shove. They are addicted to the control of money and power as well-though not nearly as much as the lot running things in D.C. now.

RR - Don't get me wrong
July 17, 2009 - 04:52 ET by Timothy HDon't get me wrong, my friend. If I had my way all the bums, save a few choice members on both sides of the aisle, would be thrown out on their padded-with-our-cash backsides.
Bush made this entirely too easy for the libs at the end of his second term. I have no illusions that this rests solely on the Dems. But, the dems have total control and ,at least for now, they own all this.
It sickens me to think that JFK would be considered far right now. Both on domestic and foreign matters. The real problem is that the GOP has no Reagan, no Newt, not even a young GWB anymore. Without a solid leader, the party is without wind in it's sails, and thus is adrift in the dark waters. To make things worse, conservatives and liberals are playing on an uneven field. Dems get free advertising and Reps get demonized in the modern media.
This is giving pause to GOP potentials. As it appears now, we may end up wandering in the wilderness for 40 years, as the Dems won't even get solid credit when all of this fails. The msm will make sure of that.

TH-I hear ya. I'm all for
July 17, 2009 - 05:01 ET by RR GOPTH-I hear ya. I'm all for term limits. We'd still get the Frankens in there every so often, but we wouldn't have these entrenched dinosaurs either.
At this stage the GOP is their own worse enemy. Palin is obviously the most important Republican out there, but the GOP Old Boys will hammer her and with the Libs/MSM piling on it doesn't help us a bit.

Biden's Bushism?
July 17, 2009 - 03:59 ET by Vivaldi5G.W. Bush: "I've abandoned free-market principles to save the free-market system." (Dumb quote that gets duly reported and condemned by people on the right like Michelle Malkin.)

spend money to keep from going bankrupt?' The answer is 'Yes, I'm

Nothing newsworthy here…
July 17, 2009 - 21:57 ET by needleJoe Biden says something stupid. AP considers it less newsworthy than “dog bites man.” This is getting as predictable as Joe Biden’s stupidity itself. However, the enormity of this particular stupid remark is hard to ignore.
I bet Sarah Palin wishes Biden had tossed this gem out at the Vice Presidential debate. That would have been fun.
