At an April 4 news conference in Strasbourg, France (White House transcript here), President Obama referred to a language that doesn't exist (bold is mine; HT to DrewM at Ace of Spades):
It was also interesting to see that political interaction in Europe is not that different from the United States Senate. There's a lot of -- I don't know what the term is in Austrian -- wheeling and dealing -- and, you know, people are pursuing their interests, and everybody has their own particular issues and their own particular politics.
Apparently none of Obama's 12 teleprompters (their existence was cited a week ago at the UK's Evening Standard, and noted yesterday at NewsBusters and BizzyBlog) were able to guide Obama's dialect-challenged utterance in time.
Amazingly, Tom Raum of the Associated Press in effect made the same mistake (HT to an e-mailer) when he cited the above Obama quote and failed to note that there isn't an Austrian language. Raum and who knows how many editors surely had several hours to get it right, and didn't.
For the record, Austria's languages, according to Wikipedia, are "German, locally also Slovene, Croatian and Hungarian."
This is either an example of the lengths to which the press will go to cover for their dear President 'Prompter, or an example of how ignorant the press covering Barack Obama really is. Or a bit of both.
Does anyone think that the establishment media would have let this slide if George Bush had been the one who made this mistake?

However, there is a much more important news that hit the "wire" today. I am not sure why NB isn't covering it.
It turns out that the Jimmy Carter Visitor Center is facing budget cuts. Apparently, Hamas has cut back their contributions (Of course, this may be just a momentary lapse as bambi, the first stupid liberal, is fueling the bloodthirsty murderers with nearly a billion dollars in "aide").
And, as it turns out, it is the least visited visitor center in the entire state of Georgia. So, if you ever wanted to take a piss on Jimmy Carter . . . er . . . Jimmy Carter's Visitor Center, I would high tail it to Georgia before the least visited visitor center in the entire state closes.

Correction. It would be all over the evil Librul media and treated as proof that he's an idiot...BECAUSE he's an idiot! You know how many gaffes Bush has had? Too many to count. Obama has been in office for over a month and this is what you got?!?!
Bush spoke like an idiot, he acted like an idiot, he was an idiot. Not to mention he ran our country into the ground.
"And I imagine you'd be having a good laugh at Bush's expense over it. Face it, our current prez is a gaffe factory who screws up as much, or more, than his predecessor. Don't dish it out if you can't take it."
That is flat out WRONG. And to say such nonsense is laughable. I probably would have laughed if I had heard Obama say that. He made a mistake, but he speaks clearly and in complete sentences.
Weak
April 7, 2009 - 01:25 ET by UnsaneUm, uhhhh, um, Jen7...ummm, uhh, I hate to, uhh, say this, but, ah, this is not speaking "clearly", um, uh, er, and in complete.................sentences. His Majesty The Shahinshah is a very bad speaker.
I do a better job at public speaking than He does. In part because whenever I took speech-intensive courses, I was pilloried for using "um" and "uh" and "ah" and "er". If anyone else does this as well, they will be slammed for bad public speaking. When His Majesty The Shahinshah does it, you gush like a schoolgirl in heat.
Sorry, but His Majesty The Shahinshah IS a gaffe factory. 57 states? Not knowing the difference between Memorial and Veterans day? AUSTRIAN as a language? Shaking a Marine's hand before boarding Marine One when protocol dictates a salute?
Oh, do not get me started on the protocol screwups. Granted, I know His Majesty The Shahinshah is bigger and better than Jesus, especially to Leftists such as yourself, but even I do not expect Him to be an protocol expert overnight. But can't He take some time out between His visit to Jay Leno and ESPN to visit with some protocol specialists and learn proper protocol (e.g., NOT bowing before kings of other nations???)
Bush spoke like an idiot, he acted like an idiot, he was an idiot. Not to mention he ran our country into the ground. Now, I realize you think anyone in government that wants the United States to have a modicum of strength on the world stage is an idiot. I also realize you think anyone who believes in national security is an idiot. I also understand you passionately, deeply hate Bush for not allowing you to live your dream of being a helpless little Ward of the State who can only survive with the help of a pampering, babying Nanny State. But you give Bush too much credit.
He was at best average. I like his foreign policy; the fact that the nation was not attacked ever again after 9-11-01 wasn't due to talk, group hugs and kind, sweet words: it was due to some bad people getting their asses kicked. His domestic policy I had some issues with. But to say "he ran this country into the ground" is quite inaccurate.
Since His Majesty The Shahinshah took office, my investments have plunged, because He has run up more debt that Bush had in eight years, and because He has made it plain that if you succeed in anything, He will be there to viciously punish you for daring to do so. Thus, investors flee. And that is nothing compared to the flight of investors and capital you will see if even half his ideas get passed. Then you better be ready to embrace Third World America (which, you being a whacked out Leftist, you probably like; hey, as long as everyone is equally impoverished and miserable, all is good, right?). By the way, none of this will sit well with the 55% of the country who hold investments and otherwise don't sit around sucking the tits of the State or the producers.
So, do us all a favor. Go back to your drawing board of designing the 2000 foot gold statue of His Majesty The Shahinshah that you no doubt want to put in place of the Washington Memorial, and don't forget that it must turn so that it constantly faces the sun as it rises, moves through the sky, and sets. And learn to be a bit more specific. "Too many to count!" is horrifyingly vague. His Majesty The Shahinshah hasn't been in office for over a month - it has been over TWO months.

April 7, 2009 - 08:52 ET by nkviking75"[Obama] made a mistake, but he speaks clearly and in complete sentences."
As has been well documented on this site, Obama only speaks clearly in complete sentences when his copy has been written for him and displayed on a teleprompter. When he's left to speak off the cuff, he mangles the language frequently.
Either you don't know what you're talking about, or you don't want to admit reality.
When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.
Ahhh, the righties are so predictable....
April 7, 2009 - 17:08 ET by Jen7I dare to speak out against Bush and I'm personally attacked. Typical. It's quite entertaining though.
I voted for Hillary in the primary and Obama in the election, so he's not in efigy in my house, but I do support him. I supported Bush after 9/11 to go into Afghanistan. For a brief moment, he brought this country back together. Then he made the mistake of going into Iraq. From then on, he made one mistake after the other. It wasn't until later, everyone learned Bush knew planes could be used as weapons to attack our cities.
I heard all the vitriol towards Bush, it was nasty. But I have NEVER, in my lifetime, heard the kind of hatred coming from the right towards Obama, until the last couple of years. He was pegged as a terrorist, a muslim (as if that was a bad thing), radical, communist, socialist, marxist. Compared to Hitler, Osama Bin Laden, and the anti-Christ.
So, bring it on. To compare their gaffes is not very 'fair and balanced'. In the first place, he's only been in office for over a month. To say Obama has had more gaffes is just a flat out lie. And for whoever listed his appointments...? Those are political decisions, nothing to do with 'gaffes'. If you want to get into that....Bush STILL out-does Obama. But then again, it's not fair to make comparisons when their time in office differs.
And no, when he's 'left to speak off the cuff', he does NOT mangle the language frequently. His 'ahs' and 'aaaands' don't make what he's saying incoherent. You still understand what he is saying. Unlike many things Bush has said.
Okay, I think that takes care of that. This was fun.
Self-Inflicted embarrassment
April 8, 2009 - 00:06 ET by UnsaneI dare to speak out against Bush and I'm personally attacked. Typical. It's quite entertaining though. I have many relatives from MO. So, Show Me. Please quote where you have been "personally attacked". Otherwise, I will merely ascribe this comment to the Leftist penchant for whining.
By the way, why the hell are you speaking out against a guy who is no longer in power? Do ex-Presidents have some mysterious Constitutional role I am not aware of? Aren't you wasting your breath here? Or perhaps you have a time machine you are going to test out?
I voted for Hillary in the primary and Obama in the election, so he's not in efigy in my house, but I do support him. I supported Bush after 9/11 to go into Afghanistan. For a brief moment, he brought this country back together. Then he made the mistake of going into Iraq. From then on, he made one mistake after the other. The mistake of going into Iraq? Hmmmm. From what I have seen, it wasn't a mistake. And then of course you say "he made one mistake after another" without enumeration. You sure like to speak in generalities. It wasn't until later, everyone learned Bush knew planes could be used as weapons to attack our cities. Huh? This sentence is incoherent.
Ah, but for starters, I have yet to see a movie made depicting the assassination of His Majesty The Shahinshah. There HAVE been movies depicting the assassination of Bush. (For starters.) And by the way, sweetie: He is pegged as a radical and a Socialist because He IS one. He believes in punishing entrepreneurs and productive citizens early and often in order to steal their money legally via a confiscatory tax code in order to give it to others who have not earned it. He told "Joe the Plumber" he intends to "spread the wealth around" as though it is His to begin with...all with that GORGEOUS, BEAUTIFUL SMILE on His face which no doubt makes you very weak-kneed, to be extremely polite.
Maybe you should take the time to consider that He has an OBSESSIVE DEVOTION to redistributing money that is not His. He has made this plain as day on Chicago public radio, in writings, and His track record in the Senate, when He bothered to vote other than "Present", made Him among the most Leftist Senators in that chamber, if not THE most Leftist.
I have not seen a human being worshipped as obsequiously as His Majesty The Shahinshah...hence my calling Him, His Majesty the Shahinshah, hence my taking care to capitalize pronouns that refer to Him. The adulation heaped upon Him reminds me of stories my old man would tell me of visiting homes of relatives in the midwest as a boy, where FDR's portrait would be displayed among the family photos. This is not behavior I associate with a democracy. The countries that heap this much love and devotion to a man are such stellar beacons of civilization like the Soviet Union, North Korea, and Turkmenistan. But I don't expect you, a Leftist, who worships the State as God and merely needs a Christ (and His Majesty The Shahinshah doubtless fills this role for you), to get this.
So, bring it on. To compare their gaffes is not very 'fair and balanced'. In the first place, he's only been in office for over a month. To say Obama has had more gaffes is just a flat out lie. Nope! Sorry. Practice your reading skills. Go up a few posts and read where one of our friendly bloggers has catalogued up to 60. Hate Bush all you want - you cannot possibly know what to do without Bush hatred, apparently - he didn't disrespect one of our closest allies by sending home the bust of Churchill (this really pissed the Brits off, like it or not). Again, for starters. Your whining "it's a flat out lie" shows me two things: One, that you are so dependent on His Majesty The Shahinshah it is a wonder how you are able to survive His trips overseas. I mean, Jen7, how on EARTH did we get through 6000 years of human civilization without His Majesty The Shahinshah??? Two, you are not an informed citizen. You are as bad, if not worse, than a Rightist who gets 100% of his or her news from Rush Limbaugh. And for whoever listed his appointments...? Those are political decisions, nothing to do with 'gaffes'. If you want to get into that....Bush STILL out-does Obama. Really? I can't remember Bush appointing this many tax cheats to office. Hell, His Majesty The Shahinshah, who I am so constantly, repeatedly assured is of choice counsel, and who allegedly has a Truth-discerning heart that is THE celestial observatory of Attributes, keeps picking people with a myriad of issues. Not even Clinton fared this badly (except with his Attorney General appointment, which took him three tries). Of course, do you supply any examples? Nah. Much easier to incessantly whine about how great your God is and then behave as if your word is The Holy Writ. But then again, it's not fair to make comparisons when their time in office differs. Really? Once upon a time, Bush was only in office for 78 days. Why can't I make that comparison of where he stood after 78 days to where your God stands at 78 days? Oh, silly me. I forgot. He is His Majesty The Shahinshah. He is 100% above any criticism, ever. Never mind.
And no, when he's 'left to speak off the cuff', he does NOT mangle the language frequently. His 'ahs' and 'aaaands' don't make what he's saying incoherent. You still understand what he is saying. Unlike many things Bush has said. I guess I am to translate this two ways as well. One, you are a hate-filled elitist snob who despises anyone with a southern accent. Two, ANYONE can sucker you into ANYTHING as long as he or she SOUNDS GOOD. Sorry, but I am one of those strange people who like to see beyond that. I am not as hopelessly shallow as you are. I have met people who speak extremely well who are merely scam artists, dirtbags, and snakes. I have met people who, for various reasons, have an extremely heavy accent and routinely butcher words who I would trust with a million bucks in cash, such is their integrity and their ability to stand by the words they utter. Only a very immature, shallow human being like yourself would not get this.
William F. Buckley, Jr once said he'd rather be governed by the first 2000 people in the Boston phone directory than by the 2000 faculty at Harvard. I happen to agree with that sentiment. Even if those 2000 Bostonians probably have what I consider is a grating accent.
And sorry, sweetie, once again. Saying "um", "uh", "ah", and "aaaaaaanndddss" and lengthy pauses aren't indicative of good speech. It's distracting. It makes the speaker sound like crap. I can't and won't understand what the speaker is saying because my mind wanders. If one does that all the time during a speech, I drift off, convinced that the speaker really doesn't know what the hell he or she is talking about. I dismiss him or her. If I did this in public speaking in any of my course work, I'd get tossed out on my ear. Therefore, when He does it, I have zero sympathy. Naturally, when He does it, you once again act like a schoolgirl in heat.
And take THAT from one who constantly is called upon to not only speak in public frequently, but from one who has to speak in public about things that are very f***ing boring.
Okay, I think that takes care of that. This was fun. Well, if your mission was to totally embarrass yourself, you certainly did take care of that. OK Jen
April 8, 2009 - 14:16 ET by BlondeWould you kindly tell us, on a scale of 1 to 10, one being totally incoherent, and ten being absolutely articulate, where you would grade your hero, Obama for this little "off the cuff" minute.

April 8, 2009 - 18:44 ET by Scuba DudeAfter viewing that video Blonde, it appears that a breathalyzer should have been administered to Bambi there. The wandering blathering and pauses sound like someone that was hitting the sauce there. I hope he did not get behind the wheel of a vehicle after that speech.

If you stopped reading as I quoted you above, how did you know Unsane called you a 'snob'?? So you can add 'liar' to that list of names.
And still no examples of W's mistakes. I could probably come up with 60 more for Obama. But since you don't read these responses, I won't waste my time.
::SNICKER::
Some posters are gluttons for punishment
April 8, 2009 - 16:03 ET by UnsaneWow. I stopped reading after the first 'His Majesty The Shahinshah'. What does that even mean? lol You know, when you lie, it is best to at least know how to lie. I didn't call you a snob until well after I first invoked His Majesty The Shahinshah.
I was so waiting for some Leftist to ask what that means. Because you are clearly unfamiliar with history, even recent history, and apparently do not know what it means to "infer", allow me to instruct you. What I find so entertaining about your posts is that, day in and day out, I am repeatedly assured that it's the guys like me, from deep in the heart of TX, who are the total dumbasses, and that it is the Leftists, to include you, who are the absolute smartest people to ever grace the world of civilization. So, you are not familiar with history, and cannot infer meanings in words and text, and YOU, by virtue of being a Leftist, is supposed to be far and away smarter than any mere mortal who dares post on NB???
In the Persian/Farsi language (depending on the time period, the language is referred to by different names), the word shah means "king". (Hmmm. Have you heard of the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi? The "Peacock Throne", perhaps? Does any of that ring a bell?) When one is referred to as a shahinshah, thaty means "king of kings", or an "emperor".
Back during the early days of the Mogul Empire in India, there was a ruler named Akbar. A very fascinating character. He had a minister and good buddy named Abul Fazl. In the late 16th Century he took it upon himself to write a history of Akbar's reign. Well, actually, it was a history, if you consider extreme ass-kissing and fawning to be a history. Throughout the text, he calls Akbar "His Majesty The Shahinshah".
(I eagerly anticipate for some idiot out there to read more into that than what is intended. Because whoever does will receive a thrashing on the boards [on the boards only!] no one will soon forget.)
The text is just extreme, horrendous adulation. But I invoke this because in a strange way, I can see the writings of Abul Fazl applied to the 44th President of the United States. I have quoted him elsewhere on this very thread in a very infamous posting that I invoke on occasion - a post so infamous that doubtless the Rightists of the NB community are trembling in fear that I will use it again, right here and now. But I will not. Yet. :-)
On to the rest of your drivel.
It's funny though, I mention Bush's incoherent sentences and get called a 'snob'. I didn't realize it's was 'snobbery' to speak in coherent sentences. Sweetie, it IS snobbery to judge one's intellectual faculties based on how well one speaks. Again, you are a silly, easily suckered girl because all ANYONE needs to do to convince you of anything is to SOUND GOOD. Why, if His Majesty The Shahinshah walked up to you and told you to talk a long walk off of a short cliff, you'd do it, because He SOUNDS GOOD.
Bush did in fact speak coherent sentences. All without distracting "uhs", "ums", countless pauses, and other things for which you give His Majesty The Shahinshah a complete and total pass. I am not here to tell you that Bush was the best public speaker - he wasn't. But neither is He. I could not get away with doing half the crap His Majesty The Shahinshah does during a speech. Especially in my case, as I am called upon, on many occasions, to speak about subjects the far reaching majority of people consider absolutely f***ing boring. But of course, since it is His Majesty The Shahinshah doing the screwups, you do not care. At all.
If you want to hear a REAL public speaker, I suggest you check out the speech (for example) given to the British people by the great Sir Winston Churchill on the BBC on 19 May 1940.
Again, it's what I figured I'd get here. Snob. Elistist. Liburl. Socialist. Muslim. Marxist. Communist. Baby Killer. I could go on and on.....Ah, there it is. The pious Leftist penchant for whining that I alluded to earlier. Allow me to correct you, sweetie.
You are apparently a deeply committed Socialist, as you hinge every aspect of your life on the doings of a deeply committed Socialist, His Majesty The Shahinshah. And yes, you are an elitist snob. Not to mention quite pretentious. Feel free to quote me all day and all night on that. It's all true, based solely on the content of the character you choose of your own freewill to display here on this thread. Before you come back in here whining about that (she who blasted Bush as an "idiot" and won't back that up in any substantive way), please indulge me: what else am I to conclude, based on your ranting here?
Again, I sure would love to see you quote for me where anyone else here has called you a "Liburl" (whatever that is), a Muslim, a Marxist, a Communist, or a Baby Killer. If you cannot prove that this has been said about you, the tattered remnants of your credibility will be promptly flushed down the toilet.
::snicker:: Snicker all you want. You are only embarrassing yourself here. You are showing yourself to be extremely uninformed. You are showing yourself to be a highly immature elitist snob, and a Socialist. You also demonstrate you cannot read, as I have had to repeat myself multiple times to you. You also lack skills like that of inference.
At this point, I have to ask: for the sake of your dignity, as the song goes, "don't walk away mad; just walk away." Do it, before I feel compelled once again to provide another serving of total embarrassment.

Perhaps you paused at "elitist snob" and "Socialist" because you saw yourself in the mirror?
Sorry, sweetie, but those are called "adjectives" in English. You blast another human being because of his speech; never mind the substance behind the words. You indicate that you will listen to anything and are willing to be suckered and conned into ANYTHING as long as the speaker/presenter SOUNDS GOOD. Elitist snobbery on parade.
You also indicate that His Majesty The Shahinshah, with apologies to Depeche Mode, is "your own personal Jesus". (At least you do with your obsequious backing of Him and apologizing for Him.) Well, His Majesty The Shahinshah is the biggest Socialist we have had in the White House, ever. This pretty much makes YOU a Socialist as well.
Hence my pitying you. Sometimes the things people say can be accurate...

For dr wishy washy
April 7, 2009 - 00:09 ET by UnsanePlease, dr wishy washy. If this were anyone who doesn't want to turn the government into your very personal pampering babysitter, you wouldn't be able to shut up about it. But, because His Majesty The Shahinshah made the error, you dismiss this as "nitpicking semantics".
after the shrubs abuse of the english language, places, people, etc, i would consider this Minor. What places has Bush abused? What people? I take it that you are an elitist snob who cannot handle people speaking English with an accent? And yes, Bush did a hatchet job on some words - but he also made fun of himself for doing so.
But this post tells me far more about you than you think. Your dream in life is to be a pathetic, helpless waif, a permanent Ward of the State (because one day you realized you cannot just crawl back up into the womb and stay there your entire life). Therefore, you will be His biggest apologist. So long as He promises to personally coddle you, burp you, feed you, and change your diapers - or at least get a government babysitter to do so - you will remain His Majesty The Shahinshah's biggest apologist.
You mention "eight years", not four. Have you consulted the Constitution lately?

Nitpicking semantics? Try again . . .
April 7, 2009 - 07:44 ET by GalvanicObama worshippers tauted this guy's international knowledge and sensitivities. But let's look at his record just in the first 2.5 months.
1. He presents UK PM Gordon Brown with a set of DVDs which won't function in the UK.
2. He gives Queen Elizabeth -- the richest woman in the world -- an iPod.
3. He refers to the national language of Austria as "Austrian."
These are exactly the kinds of gaffs that the media and other Bush-haters used to ridicule "cowboy/country-bumpin" Bush-43 over.
Want something more serious? He warned North Korea of negative consequences should it fail to comply with UNSC resolutions prohibiting the Taepodong launch, depsitre NK's reecord for routinely ignoring such warnings and resolutions. As predicted, NK ignores Obama and launches the missile anyway. Obama's reaction? His lame SecState - who apparently didn't learn from the embarrassment her husband's Administration suffered for trusting NK -- is looking into more ways of scolding of NK. International smarts? He looks like a world-class fool.
But Obama gets credit in the media and from Dems for a new "outreach" to the Islamic world when he declares that the US is not and never will be at war with Islam --- exactly what Bush-43 declared repeatedly from 9-11 until he left office.

April 7, 2009 - 00:33 ET by UnsaneSorry, plumbumbar. I know that you being a committed Socialist and all, you have to go to bat for your God, but His Majesty The Shahinshah screwed up royally.
There is an Austrian dialect of German - just as there is an American dialect of English. Just like with differences in dialect, there can be severe differences in understanding, but the same language is still spoken on the streets of Vienna, or Salzburg, or Innsbruck, as it is in Berlin, or Munich, or Hamburg.
Just as Americans don't run around saying "I speak American", Austrians don't run around saying "I speak Austrian". His Majesty The Shahinshah calling the language the Austrian people speak "Austrian" is the same as one saying Americans speak "American".
Indeed, the differences in German dialects are quite extreme. There are 60 for Germany alone. My grandmother would sometimes travel from Frankfurt am Main to Kaiserslautern - a distance of 200 km - and have great difficulty understanding people. (But then, I have run into people from Manchester, England, whom I cannot understand to save my life, even though they are in fact speaking English.)
By far the most challenging dialect of German for those familiar with the language is that of Switzerland. The variation of German spoken there is very difficult for even fluent speakers of German from other regions to understand.

Anybody know the context of this?
April 7, 2009 - 07:04 ET by dervishWhy is he trying to speak "Austrian" when Strasbourg is, technically, in France (except for brief periods when it's been in Germany)?
Strasbourg
April 7, 2009 - 08:17 ET by UnsaneNo "technically" about it - Strasbourg is on the west bank of the Rhein, which, in the stretch it is found, means that it is in France.
I've never been there, but I wouldn't be surprised if it has a good number of people who primarily speak German. This due to its proximity to Germany (just across the river) and the history of it getting batted back and forth between German-speaking duchies, kingdoms, and empires and France. To wit - Hans Bethe, the Nobel Prize winning physicist (1967) was quoted on the program The Astronomers as saying "I was born on July 2, 1906, in Strasbourg, which was then German and later became French."
It should also be noted, finally, that the European Parliament is located in Strasbourg, which provides ample opportunity for many European languages to be spoken there, depending on the group of MEPs you run into, to include German. He may have been addressing Austrian MEPs or an Austrian journalist(s).
